We present results of two studies that address creative decision-making through the usage of local resources. Adopting anopportunistic design approach (Buxton 2007; Botero et al. 2010;Visser 1994), both studies use off-the-shelf infrastructure toidentify support strategies that deserve further implementationefforts. Both studies yielded complete creative products, consistingof a mixed-media performance artwork and a multimodalinstallation. We discuss the procedures employed to assist thedecision-making processes with an eye on the development ofnew creativity support metaphors. The examples serve to framethe discussion on human-computer interaction and musical creativityin the context of ubiquitous music making.

This article summarises the main challenges of redesigning the CO- DES sound library. CODES was conceived to allow cooperative music pro- totyping by novices over the Web. The new version should be as more web standards-compliant as possible. Concepts like folksonomy and recomendation are under review and will be implemented to allow users to tag and share their own sound samples. (paper in Portuguese).

People have always found music significant in their lives, whether for enjoyment in listening, performing, or creating. However, music making in modern life tends to be restricted to the domain of the professional artists, instrumentalists, and singers. Since the advent of Web 2.0 and Rich Internet Applications, the authors' research group has been investigating the use of Web-based technology to support novice-oriented computer-based musical activities. The main motivation of their work is the belief that no previous musical knowledge should be required for participating in creative musical activities. Consequently, any ordinary user—non-musician or novice—may enhance his creativity through engagement, entertainment, and self-expression. The goal of this chapter is to propose several concepts that emerged during their research concerning novice-oriented cooperative music creation and musical knowledge sharing (a sophisticated activity distinct from the common and well-known mus...

This study is among the first that attempt to define a methodology for creativity-centred software design in educational contexts, more specifically for musical activities in ubiquitous settings. We propose and apply a set of design techniques – the Ubimus Planning and the Ubimus Design protocols – as alternatives to experimental procedures that leave out relevant aspects of social and procedural dimensions in educational research. Two workshops were conducted to assess both technological and domain-specific requirements for support of creative musical activities. The first workshop was conducted with music teachers and school teachers that had no formal musical training. The objective of this workshop was to assess domain-specific requirements for musical creative activities by educational staff. The second workshop focused on technological support for tool development by non-musicians. This workshop yielded two software projects that involved user evaluations of creative processes...

ABSTRACT CODES is a Web-based environment designed to support cooperative music prototyping. This paper discusses the mechanisms which were implemented in CODES in order to provide group awareness: music prototyping rationale, action logging and modification marks. The main characteristics of CODES are initially presented, followed by descriptions and discussions of the proposed awareness mechanisms.

This paper presents CODES – COoperative Music Prototype DESign, a Web-based environment for cooperative music prototyping. Its main goal is to allow any user – especially those with no expertise in music – to draft musical pieces collectively, in a prototyping manner. So, such musical sketches – we call them music prototypes – can be repeatedly tested, listened to, and modified, not only by their original creators but also by the online partners that will cooperate in their refinement, until their final form is reached. CODES enables sharing of knowledge by means of rich interaction and argumentation mechanisms associated to each prototype modification, which are also secure ways of providing awareness to this asynchronous collaborative environment. In this paper, we present the concept of music prototyping and introduce the main aspects related to cooperative prototyping of musical pieces, focusing on issues concerning a musical piece as a collective creation of a virtual community...

This paper presents an IT structure developed in the context of an international cooperation project aiming to collect, process and present environmental information about water quality online automatically via the Internet, for different user profiles. The availability of online environmental information is still in an early stage in Brazil, mainly due to the high cost of multi-parameter equipment. The availability of information using the concept of open data, dynamic dashboards and the Social Web Of Things allows this structure to be used for remote queries for learning, research and dissemination of socially valuable information. To achieve this goal, the following systems were created: an open data publication portal, a configurable web dashboard system, a mobile application and water source profiles in social networks, which are all automatically fed by the system. The characteristics of this IT structure are presented, as well as experimental results in the laboratory and in ...

Audio transmission in restricted area can bring different possibilities and be explored for education, arts and entertainment purposes. This paper presents an ongoing project that aims to develop an open-based technology de- vice to broadcast audio to portable devices such as smart phones and tablets in a small range. Gambiarradio is the preliminary name coined to describe this project, which implements a dynamic local radio station to transmit audio for portable devices using wi-fi network. The goal of this project is to take ad- vantage of low-cost equipment, based on free software philosophy and make it available to be used in education, promoting the inclusion of blind students and enabling live performances, for instance. The main features of the project, the first steps and the preliminary results are presented, as well as the prospective work.

ABSTRACT This study is among the first that attempt to define a methodology for creativity-centred software design in educational contexts, more specifically for musical activities in ubiquitous settings. This workshop yielded two software projects that involved user evaluations of creative processes. Participants in t e corresponding user studies included both musicians and non-musicians. The Ubimus Planning protocol served to raise important questions regarding technological usage by musicians and naive subjects in educational contexts. Non-technical approaches, such as those proposed by traditional soundscape activities, may not be suited for introducing non-musicians to sonic composition. Naive subjects may respond better to technologically based approaches, such as those used in ecocomposition. The Ubimus Design approach proved to be effective to test the usability of musical tools at early stages of development. Prototypes were implemented and usability studies were carried out by undergraduate IT students within a three-week time slot. Sharp differences were observed in the type of requirements expressed by musicians and non-musicians regarding creativity support tools. Nevertheless, both groups of subjects assessed the use of software prototypes within exploratory musical activities as being fun and expressive.
