The purpose of this chapter is to investigate the relationship among supply chain innovation and performance in terms of market and operational performance. The chapter is built on empirically data subject to 187 useable responses from a questionnaire-survey among Danish manufacturers. A conceptual model was developed and subsequently two major hypotheses were formulated. Linear regression was performed using SPSS software 22.0 to tests the developed hypotheses. Supply chain innovation is unfolded through the components of business processes, networks structure and technology. Data reveals that supply chain innovation does pay off in terms of improved market and operational performance. The chapter also reveals that the strongest relationship is obtained with supply chain innovation and operational performance. Market performance may be influenced by a number of different factors beyond supply chain innovation. The chapter provides interesting findings of the network component with empirical evidence that it has a positive influence on both market and operation performance. The chapter concludes by suggesting new areas of research including also the relationship to financial performance.

PurposeAdditive manufacturing (AM) is one technology among the many under the umbrella of Industry 4.0 technologies. AM is developing rapidly, and extant research reveals that the technology contains possibilities for firms to develop competitive advantages, but that it also poses several challenges to overcome before such benefits can be achieved. To provide further insight into this topic, this paper aims to analyse how a business association can disseminate knowledge and experience about AM to its members.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is based on 13 interviews from 11 different organisations within an embedded single-case study of a Danish non-profit business association.FindingsThe paper identifies 12 motivational factors for joining the association as well as seven perceived challenges in the current setup of the association. The paper demonstrates that barriers to the use of AM can be reduced through participation in a business association.Research limitations/implicati...

ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to analyse the relationship between key behavioural indicators (KBIs), Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) efficiency, and perceived firm performance (in terms of sales, cost, and finance) as well as secondary performance indicators. KBIs and S&OP efficiency are novel concepts that still need operationalisation and thus call for an explorative approach. The paper is based on a questionnaire-survey among Danish manufacturers that have an S&OP process in operation. The survey consists of multiple respondents from each company covering sales, operations, finance, and the S&OP process manager. Data reveals that there is a positive relationship between KBIs and S&OP efficiency among the respondents. Furthermore, data indicate that process efficiency is positively related to sales and operational performance. The results also reveal that firm-size controls the relationships between process efficiency and operational performance. The results indicate that it does pay off to focus on soft issues (in terms of behaviour and process efficiency) in S&OP processes to enhance sales and operational performance.

Purpose The discussion of rigor vs relevance is an ongoing debate in academic environment. Ambitions to fulfill one of these two objectives might not exclude the other. Instead, they could and should be achieved simultaneously. However, what seems to be missing in supply chain management (SCM) research is the unfolding of symmetrical balance between the two dimensions of relevance – theoretical vs practical relevance. The purpose of this paper is to advance the understanding of this symmetrical balance and to change the conversation to also include the practical relevance dimension. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on literature studies as well as the results of a questionnaire survey distributed to the Danish Supply Chain Panel consisting of 113 supply chain executives (as per the beginning of 2017). A short interview about the questionnaire results was also carried out with three panel members. Findings With an increased focus on journal rankings, there is a risk of ...

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to report on the experiences from a number of two‐day courses in fundamentals of supply chain management completed for about 200 employees in a case company. The courses were held in order to increase the organisation's competency level and by this prepare people for changes. The paper aims to test whether this course has had an effect on the implementation process and participants taking part in the course.Design/methodology/approachApplies two sets of questionnaires. The first questionnaire consists of evaluation sheets that were handed out to the participants and filled out at the end of each course. The second questionnaire was distributed by e‐mail to the participants of the completed courses.FindingsProvides evidence for the possibility to construct and complete a supply chain course that could increase competency level and change readiness.Practical implicationsIt takes time to obtain a common understanding of technical terms, concepts ...

PurposeThe purpose of this data‐based analysis is to report and reflect on the characteristics of the academic discipline concerned with logistics and supply chain management (SCM) as it is conducted in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). The paper further seeks to explain variations in the research field in terms of the demographics, research domains and methodologies, and publication patterns of the study's respondents.Design/methodology/approachAn e‐mail questionnaire survey was distributed to 353 researchers based in the Nordic countries. With 144 answers returned, the response rate was 41 per cent.FindingsThe study did not provide a clear picture of a distinct Nordic research paradigm applying to the study of logistics and SCM. The analysis shows as characteristic of research issues pursued by Nordic researchers the focus on supply chains and networks and the use of dyads, chains or networks of organizations as levels of analysis. The use of...

An important aspect of effective supplier relationship management is the role of trust. This paper seeks to understand whether supplier relationship management or supplier development initiative should be emphasized as a firm strives to achieve superior supplier performance. PurposeWhile few would disagree that high data quality is a precondition for the efficiency of a company, this remains an area to which many companies do not give adequate attention. Thus, this paper aims to identify which are the most important barriers preventing companies from achieving high data quality. By improving awareness of barriers on which to concentrate, companies are put in a better position to achieve high quality data.Design/methodology/approachFirst, a literature review of data quality and data quality barriers is carried out. Based on this literature review, the paper identifies a set of overall barriers to ensuring high data quality. The significance of these barriers is investigated by a questionnaire study, which includes responses from 90 Danish companies. Because of the fundamental difference between master data and transaction data, the questionnaire is limited to focusing only on master data.FindingsThe results of the survey indicate that a lack of delegatio...

PurposeSeveral studies have documented that information technology (IT) projects often do not successfully meet defined objectives regarding time, budget, and functionality. There can be multiple causes for this, and an important factor in this context is the extent to which a company is ready for an IT project. To help understand this dynamic, this paper seeks to present a framework for analyzing “IT readiness” in small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs).Design/methodology/approachBased on a literature review, the paper defines a framework for assessing and changing the IT readiness of a SME. The framework is illustrated and investigated by three case studies.FindingsThe case studies show that the framework of IT readiness in SMEs is useful for assessing company readiness and supporting the management of a project.Research limitations/implicationsThe framework and case studies provide an improved understanding of how to evaluate the readiness of a SME for an IT project.Practical ...

Abstract: Businesses have increasingly engaged in various forms of cross-border transfers of activities. Much production, knowledge and work has been moved offshore from developed economies to achieve better competitiveness. However, recent research has begun to report about an opposite movement, i.e., backshoring of business activities. This research paper reports empirical survey results, exploring and explaining manufacturing relocation from and to three Nordic countries. The purpose was to investigate manufacturing firms' practices of pursuing different manufacturing globalisation strategies in terms of why, what types of companies, and where questions, and in the context of manufacturing relocation activities originating from Denmark, Finland, and Sweden. Both offshoring and backshoring of manufacturing are also analysed from the perspective of changes in ownership, i.e., the extent to which outsourcing or insourcing are related to manufacturing relocation. Purpose This paper aims to analyse how the political, relational and institutional contexts of the offshore wind industry affect supply-network-enabled innovation (SNEI) and to identify significant possibilities for obtaining the overall target of reducing the cost of producing energy based on the offshore wind industry. Design/methodology/approach Through an embedded single-case study, the contextual conditions of SNEI within the relatively immature offshore wind energy industry are investigated. Findings The national system of innovation only affects product innovation within the industry. Process innovation, which is needed to make the industry grow and mature, seems lesser supported. Different levels of maturity exist among the actors within the industry, which creates barriers for SNEI. To help the offshore wind industry grow, the educational and research system can promote integration of companies by helping the actors to design best practices and manage their business process...

Purpose Big data poses as a valuable opportunity to further improve decision making in supply chain management (SCM). However, the understanding and application of big data seem rather elusive and only partially explored. The purpose of this paper is to create further guidance in understanding big data and to explore applications from a business process perspective. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on a sequential mixed-method. First, a Delphi study was designed to gain insights regarding the terminology of big data and to identify and rank applications of big data in SCM using an adjusted supply chain operations reference (SCOR) process framework. This was followed by a questionnaire-survey among supply chain executives to elucidate the Delphi study findings and to assess the practical use of big data. Findings First, big data terminology seems to be more about data collection than of data management and data utilization. Second, the application of big data is most a...
