The use of electronic (E) processes in the workplace has become pervasive in many countries in recent years. In Nigeria the pervasive use of information technology is quite new. The adoption of this new technology is gaining momentum at Universities in Nigeria. Concepts as E-Senate, E-Campus, E-Examinations, among others depict the extent to which Universities are adopting E-processes. To drive the processes, investments in hard and soft wares are being executed with huge sums of money. This is done in the belief that the new ethos is cost effective, modern and competitive. But as an innovation, the e-processes are new and will be driven by stakeholders. These stakeholders include Management, Staff and Students; their views, reactions and actions are key determinants of its sustainability. This work is a study of stakeholders' responses to the use of e-processes (using Rogers' Diffusion of Innovation Theory) for service delivery by Universities in Nigeria. The outcomes of the research show that about 32 percent of staff members are fully compliant and another 55 percent are concerting efforts to achieve compliance. In all, 87 percent of those interviewed have keyed into the process. Only about 13 percent are yet to key in, these may be seen as Laggards using Rogers categorization. Since, the new process has taken off, there is need to perfect it by resolving the problems of power supply, internet access, accessories, among others that are limiting its success rate.

Disciplinary action is used within an organisation to remedy undesirable workplace behaviour and to redirect employee effort towards the achievement of organisational goals. However, to achieve this goal, principles of substantive and procedural fairness must be adhered to when implementing disciplinary action against any employee. The objective of this paper was to explore whether the state owned entity under study took into consideration the substantive and procedural elements in the application of its disciplinary action and how employees perceived these principles. To attain this objective, a qualitative research design was adopted in which semi-structured interviews were conducted with research participants. A total of 10 research participants, from every level of the organisation participated in the study. Results of the study demonstrated that research participants perceived disciplinary action to be in accordance with a fair procedure, but not always for a fair reason. It is...

The previous Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had intended to introduce the N5,000.00 currency bill into the Nigerian economy and claimed that such currency bill would help it manage the exchange rate especially against the dollar. This generated a huge outcry from the public especially economists. The major reason was that this introduction would generate inflation and also because the policy ran counter to the cash-less policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria. But to the Central Bank, there was no economic theory to suggest a currency redenomination could cause inflation. This debate once more threw up a need to reexamine the determinants of inflation in Nigeria. Generally, inflation could be cost push or demand pull but what drives the demand or informs cost quite often differ from one economy to another. This study examined the factors responsible for increasing cost of production and spending behaviour in Nigeria. It was able to identify 13 factors that impact on inf...

This paper investigates the impact of fiscal and Monetary Policies on Unemployment Problem in Nigeria and covers the periods 1980 to 2013. To achieve this, fiscal policy was captured here by government expenditures and revenues respectively while monetary policy was proxied by broad Money Supply (M2), Interest and Exchange rates respectively. The methodology adopted was econometric analysis employing OLS techniques and unit roots of the series were examined using the Augmented Dickey-Fuller after which the co-integration tests was conducted using the Engle Granger approach. Error correction models were estimated to take care of the short run dynamics. It was found that while government expenditure had a positive relationship with unemployment problem in Nigeria, the result of government revenue was negative and insignificant on unemployment problem. For monetary policy, it was found that money supply and exchange rate had positive and significant impact while interest rate has only ...

Compared to other components of the Cyberspace, Cybersecurity is emerging the most prominent domain of concern. The reason may not be unconnected with the geometric growth in in the evolution of new computer-based technologies by the day and the deployment of such technologies for both positive and negative purposes. There are four major areas where Cybersecurity programmes are massively ongoing: Technology Products, Research, Education, and Business enterprises. These four areas are unarguably very vital and affect the socioeconomic development of any society. E-commerce and other sensitive socioeconomic ventures are growing but are markedly deterred by security concerns in the Cyberspace. Having regard to the foregoing, this paper examines the ongoing Cybersecurity developments in Nigeria especially as it affects the sectors under review. The argument is that there have not been a significant synergy between the two sectors in promoting Cybersecurity development in Nigeria hence the terrifying spate of cybercrimes amidst the Cybercrime prevention and prohibition laws. We submit that a mutual front propelled by Public Private Partnership (PPP) would go a long way to reducing the spate of these crimes in the cyberspace thus promoting socioeconomic development in Nigeria and the sub region. It is also submitted that with the involvement of public and private sectors, the legal frameworks for combating cybercrimes would be enhanced further through the use of joint socio-technical approaches.

We investigated the transmission effects of the trade spat between the United States and China on the relative trade openness of the West African sub-region. We found that economic policy uncertainty in China positively and significantly influence relative openness and the trade war is a positively significant driver of relative openness of the West African economy to China unlike the United States, with no significant influence in the short run, but a relative elasticity of 32% in the long run of openness to the trade war. The speed of adjustment as shown by the error correction representation is faster in openness to China than it is for the United States. As the economies of the West African sub-region appear vulnerable to the trade war and uncertainties in the United States and China, it is expected that deliberate policy mitigants be put in place to cushion the transmission effects of the trade war.

The current study evaluates the extent of incorporation of customers’ specific affordability needs in the Nigeria National Housing Fund (NHF) scheme. It ascertains the adequacy of the consideration given to the specific affordability needs of potential beneficiaries of the NHF scheme and determines the adequacy of the consideration given to the inputs from the intended beneficiaries of the NHF scheme. Descriptive and exploratory research designs are adopted for the study. Different offices of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, namely the implementers of the NHF scheme, in Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Ibadan, Enugu, Lagos, as well as the 19 state/district offices in these zones are studied. The population of the study includes 201 management staff and officers in these offices. Considering the size of the population and the nature of the investigation, a census is undertaken. Data for the study are collected through structured questionnaire. The formulated hypotheses are tested using ana...

This investigation seeks to answer the research question of how employee creativity (EC), employee polychronicity (EP), high-performance human resource practices (HPHRP), and perceived organizational culture (POC) impact work engagement (WE) inside organizations in the 4IR period. Nine (9) businesses in Nigeria’s Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo States served as the study's sample. Data for this examination were gathered using a cross-sectional survey methodology, and respondents who agreed to participate in the investigation were randomly assigned questionnaires. Consequently, a simple random sampling method was used to select participants. Statistical software for social sciences (SPSS version 28) was analyzed on 261 of the 270 distributed questionnaires that were recovered and determined to be useable. This study demonstrated how POC, EC, EP, and HPHRPs all have a substantial, positive, and independent influence on the improvement and sustainability of WE in Nigerian companies operating ...

This research investigates the impacts of organizational learning and resilience on adaptive performance within the banking industry during the 4IR. This study implemented a cross-sectional survey approach, having its sample (250 employees), purposively obtained from five (5) Lagos State of Nigeria’s banks. These five (5) banks are First City Monument Bank Limited, Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, Guarantee Trust Bank Plc, and First Bank of Nigeria Plc. The current researchers encouraged voluntary participation and guaranteed respect for related ethical matters. Two hundred and forty-six (247) surveys were successfully retrieved and suitably utilized. Data recovered was cleaned and analyzed with Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS vs. 28). This paper confirms that organizational learning and resilience independently and significantly increase and sustain positive adaptive performance. This investigation also found that organizational learning and resilience si...

This paper assesses the relational effects of perceived organizational support (POS), fear of COVID-19 (FOC-19), and work-related stress (WRS) on the safety performance of healthcare staff. The sample for this research was extracted from the University College Hospital (UCH) in the Oyo State of Nigeria. The participants were midwives, doctors, auxiliary services staff, and nurses who functioned in a COVID-19 hospital ward, fever or respiratory ICU, Auxiliary services, or outpatient clinics. This investigation espoused a clinical cross-sectional survey involving self-reported surveys. Of the 150 questionnaires distributed, 147 were fit for scrutiny and analyzed with Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 28). This paper established a relationship between POS and safety performance (SP). Besides, it showed a significant positive correlation between FOC-19 and SP. It further noted that work-related stress negatively relates to safety performance. Moreover, this stud...

The study presents a burden on theory and practice for discovering a reward criterion that achieves workspace morale in a hyperinflationary context. It aimed to determine the relationship between the individual components of rewards (extrinsic, intrinsic, and social) and workspace morale and the mediating role of employee engagement in a hyperinflationary context. The study applied a cross-sectional study. It employed a structured questionnaire as a study instrument. The target population for the study comprised 900 employees and managers of Bindura municipality in Zimbabwe. The study employed a sample of 269 employees and managers, and the methodology used was a case study. A total of 269 questionnaires were hand delivered after administering the ethical consent form. A total of 214 questionnaires were returned, and after preliminary review and cleaning, 17 questionnaires were found with missing values leaving 197 analyzable questionnaires thus, achieving a 73.2% response rate. This investigation examines the impacts of perceived workplace fairness, ethical leadership, and workers’ demographics on ethical behaviors within Nigeria’s public service. A sample was taken from ten local government areas of Oyo State, Nigeria. However, this investigation has utilized a survey study approach, where the researcher randomly dispersed questionnaires. Out of 500 questionnaires distributed, 452 were suitable for research and analyzed with the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS 27). This paper suggests that female civil servants exhibit more ethical behaviors than their male counterparts (Lu & Lu, 2010). Also, older civil servants with higher educational qualifications, who are also at the highest job level, exhibited more ethical behaviors. This paper further established that perceived workplace fairness and ethical leadership significantly and positively impact ethical behavior within Nigeria’s public service sector (De Schrijver Delbeke, Maesschalck, & Pl...

The study aims at examining the impact of workplace conflict on employee productivity in the healthcare industry. Workplace conflict is a dysfunctional stressor that undermines the endeavours, and performances of any workplace (Adewole & Adebola, 2010). While it adopted the descriptive survey design for the investigation, the participants were 4541 comprising senior and junior staff members from the five selected Federal Health Institutions in Enugu State, Nigeria (namely: University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu, the Nigerian Army 82 Division Hospital and Police Clinic). Using Freund and Wilson’s formula (Freund & Wilson, 1993), a sample size of 233 was calculated with a 10 percent error margin from the population. A questionnaire set was used to collect data, which was analysed using regression analysis and Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient (PPMCC). Findings indicated that employee gender differences had...

An essential aspect of an organisation's strategy involves deciding how to devote time and resources to various kinds of endeavours. Exploration and exploitation which is organisational ambidexterity are two categories of undertakings that organisations put their attention as proposed by scholars. The argument though mixed, is that, organisations that are able to simultaneously carryout these two activities, perform better. This study had the broad aim of assessing how organisational ambidexterity affects the performance of selected operators of GSM in Enugu State, Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design was adopted and a total of 4,968,716 subscribers of the four selected GSM operators made up the population of the study. Out of the 384 sample size drawn, 365 subscribers correctly filled and returned their questionnaires. The study found that the customers are satisfied with the exploitative innovations of the GSM operators but they are not expressively receptive to their exploratory innovations.

This paper centres on examining the link between emotional labour and dinning duration within the restaurant industry. In this study emotional labour practice was modelled as one of the crucial predictors of dining duration. This study adopted a multiple case study using a cross sectional design approach. The target population was 480 dyads encounters in 6 of the most popular fast food restaurant chains in Harare. Some 214 seat-in customers were the unit of analysis while wait staff were the unit of observation. In terms of responses, 200 responses were attained and were deemed sufficient for meaningful Structural Equation Modelling. The quantitative approach employed a self-completed structured questionnaire in collecting data. A structural equation modelling was run to test the direct effects, a multi-group structural equation modelling was run to test the moderating effects of categorical variables, and a moderated multiple regression was run to test the moderation effects of the...

This paper evaluates the influences of financial behavior, work engagement, and work engagement on financial well-being within Nigeria’s Banking Industry. Its sample was taken from four (4) banks in the Nigerian states of Lagos and Oyo. They include First Bank of Nigeria, First City Monument Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, and Zenith Bank Plc. The present researcher dispersed the questionnaires at random for this cross-sectional survey. Nevertheless, 382 of the 400 questionnaires sent met the criteria for investigation and were examined using SPSS version 28. The present investigation conducted standard multiple regression and zero-order correlation analyses to test the stated hypotheses and conclude that positive financial behaviors and employee work engagement considerably increase financial well-being. In Nigeria's banking industry, financial stress, on the other hand, worsens financial well-being in the 4IR period. It further establishes a link between financial behavi...

This study adopted historical approach to political research and used secondary sources of information. This paper focuses on assessing financial challenges facing local governments in Nigeria. The study observed that insufficient allocation from the federation account, lack of effective revenue generation drive, mismanagement of funds, intrusion of the state government into local governments use of funds, amongst others are the major challenges confronting local governments. Nevertheless, if right strategies such as effective planning, accountability, transparency, curbing of financial mismanagement, sound business undertaking, increased fund allocation from federation account are adopted, local Government may be in better position to accelerate the pace of infrastructural development in Nigeria.

Globalisation has been perceived as the integration and spread of information, processes and technology across organisations and nations. It has accelerated transformation and change in organisations, with the effect of strengthening or, as the case may be, weakening employment relations within organisations. Globalisation has been characterised by a rise in the use of casual employees, decentralisation and continuous advancement in technology, which ultimately affects employment relations. Therefore, this paper sets to explore the effects of globalisation on employment relations in South Africa’s film industry. The current investigation adopted a qualitative research approach, which was carried out in an organisation within the film industry in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Purposive sampling was used to collect data from ten employees at various levels in the organisation. Data was obtained by means of semi-structured face-to-face interviews with the research participant...

Downsizing is viewed as a deliberate and systematic organisational reduction of workforce to cut costs and improve performance. There has been ongoing turmoil in the employment relations fraternity for the past few decades, exacerbated by global economic recessions and the need for organisations to adopt new technologies. The effects manifested in organisations’ widespread use and acceptance of downsizing globally. This paper aimed to investigate the untold effects of downsizing on employee commitment in Zimbabwe’s freight management services. Efforts were made to establish implications of the downsizing strategies that organisations in Zimbabwe used, and how employees in freight management services perceived the effects of downsizing on employee commitment. In addition, the present study aimed to identify challenges that employees and organisations faced throughout the downsizing process. The paper adopted a mixed-method research approach. The study found that downsizing was signif...

In recent times, there have been calls by scholars and experts for the need to investigate the influence of human capital development (HCD) on the workforce’s innovativeness and the sustainability of businesses. To respond to this call for empiricism, this study examines the impact of human capital developments (HCD) on deposit money banks’ (DMBs’) ability to survive and sustain the innovativeness of their personnel. To achieve this, the research employed a descriptive survey design in its investigation. Five DMBs in Lagos State, Nigeria were chosen as study participants, based on their years in financial operations, staff strength, and the locations of their offices both inside and outside of the country. Amongst these DMBs are the United Bank for Africa, Access Bank, First Bank of Nigeria, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank. Human capital development significantly improves the sustainability and innovativeness of the workforce in these DMBs, as evidenced by the findings of the hypothesis te...

Existing literature has examined a plethora of factors that can affect the effectiveness, performance or nature of fiscal policy in an economy. In this paper we build on the fundamental tenets of micro-economic models to examine the potential ways cryptocurrencies can affect the effectiveness of a country’s fiscal policy. Our finding is that under the assumptions of an absence of uncertainties, perfectly competitive markets, household utility maximization, and usage of public money and cryptocurrency, the government purchases as well as the ability of the government to raise funds by issuing bonds and by taxation is decreasing in new investments in cryptocurrencies but increasing in the income earned from cryptocurrencies. We go further to discuss the factors that account for the sustained ability of cryptocurrencies to weaken the state’s fiscal-policy capabilities and possible ways the effects of cryptocurrencies on the state’s fiscal integrity can be mitigated.

The aim of this study was to determine tourism graduates' employability, knowledge, skills, and competencies in a VUCA world by constructing a tourism employability model. The concept of employability differs depending on the context, as well as the views of the people making employment decisions and those seeking employment in a VUCA world. It has become imperative to ensure an adequate level of preparedness among tourism graduates in a world dominated by technology, by understanding what the important knowledge, skills, and competencies are to enhance graduates' chances of securing and sustaining employment in the tourism industry in South Africa. The researcher adopted a sequential explanatory mixed method, which entailed combining quantitative and qualitative methods. A significant relationship was found between professional skills, personality traits, knowledge skills, and operational skills in the tourism industry. The originality of this study is that it developed a t...

Capitalism, as it is known is based on the concepts of competition, profit motive, private enterprises (self-interest) and scientific management. These key catalysts set the motion for capitalist expansion, exploration and exploitation. One notable area where capitalism has naturally done exceptionally well based on its characteristics, is within the domain of scientific management, which has spurred technological innovations as well as triggered techno-globalisation. In spite of several warning signs of the impact of techno-globalisation on the sustainability of labour, the world advanced into the 4th Industrial Revolutions, which is also driven by highly sophisticated technological advancements. The 4th IR has unique features, namely, smartphone takeover almost every aspect of business activity; knowledge generation is made possible through big data; robotics may likely replace many human routine activities in the workplace. The new trend will certainly lead to massive job losses ...
