[Conception through mimesis]
As to the conception [concipere] of the work of bioart, it is to be noted, that after ‘dialectical coition’ between the opposites, i.e. abstraction and realism. The seed lies warm in the ‘mental womb’ without any visible alteration, only the womb closes up itself to prevent issuing forth again, and for securing it from any cold, looking at all times like BUTTER or COAGULATED MILK. A few months later is altered through colour from the quality of thick milk or butter, and it becomes BLOOD, or at least resembles it in colour, ‘nature’ having now begun to work upon it. In the days following that blood begins to be united into one body, grows hard, and becomes a little quantity, and to appear a ROUND LUMP. And as the first creation of the earth was VOID, and without form, so in this creating work of divine power in the womb, this shapeless embryo lies like the first mass. But months after, the FOUR principal members are formed by the PLASTIC power of nature⁄these are the heart, the brain, the liver and the reproductive organs of the work of art, members which conjunctly and separately receive their PERFECTION according to the wishes and aims of the maker...

This manuscript introduces the reader to the unique case study of Algeria. Since 2019 the country has been undergoing a social and political revolution, similar to the Arab Springs of 2011, which seeks to overthrow a long lasting “fachade democracy” and authoritarian military currently in power via a coup d’etat. This military elite which, to the eyes of the Western powers is trying to establish a constitutional democracy, is in fact attempting to perpetuate itself in power via the control of: the web 2.0, 3.0, cellular networked technologies such as 3G and 4G, social media such as Facebook or Instagram, You Tube, Vimeo, the press and the mass media; imprisoning and in some cases murdering activists, lawyers and intellectuals which use these mediums as means to denounce basic violations of human rights.
Through a number of video and audio interviews carried out in Algeria and the autonomous region of the Kabyle with key players of the revolution during the Ramadan of 2019, this manuscript will herald the hypothesis that Algeria is in fact a “Dictature 4.0”, a “plen air” prison supporting radical islamism, human rights violations to minorities such as the: Amazigh or the Mozabites Berber and their cultural heritage. A regime exercising an absolute control over networked technologies, which in fact and paradoxically are playing a vital role in connecting and informing those which resist this fundamental authoritarianism.

TABOO - TRANSGRESSION - TRANSCENDENCE in Art & Science
The Department of Audio and Visual Arts of the Ionian University organizes for the second year in a row the interdisciplinary conference “Taboo - Transgression - Transcendence in Art & Science”, including theoretical and artwork presentations.
The conference focuses: a) on questions about the nature of the forbidden and about the aesthetics of liminality - as expressed in art that uses or is inspired by technology and science, b) in the opening of spaces for creative transformation in the merging of science and art. This year’s conference is inspired by the work of the pioneers who challenged the linear thinking towards spatial arts and time-based media and the ones who were able to transcend the illusion of reality and the confines of technology. It is dedicated to all those who keep pushing the limits further than the next gadget and understand the essential role of fantasy when synchronized with reality. One step further, one more time, knowing that the truly opening dimension might be towards the voyaging of consciousness.
Organized within the framework of the 2nd International Interdisciplinary Conference “Taboo-Transgression- Transcendence in Art and Science”, by the Ionian University, two exhibitions were integrated in the program of the 11th Audiovisual Arts Festival. The first of these includes scientific presentations through posters and is organized by the Ionian University in conjunction with the A-Club of the Planetary Collegium, Plymouth University. The second one, “Body Esc”, aims to induce a brief reflection on the meaning of the body in the digital and biotechnological age. It features artworks in photography, video and installations created by Greek and international artists.

The third international interdisciplinary conference “Taboo - Transgression - Transcendence in Art & Science” takes place in 11-13 November 2018 in Mexico City, hosted by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and the Centro de Cultura Digital. Including theoretical and artwork presentations TTT2018 continues to focus: a) on questions about the nature of the forbidden and about the aesthetics of liminality - as expressed in art that uses or is inspired by technology and science, b) in the opening of spaces for creative transformation in the merging of science and art. Coordinated in partnership with the program of the FACTT 2018 - Festival Art & Science Trans-disciplinary and Trans-national the conference is co-organized by the Research and Creation Group Arte+Ciencia , UNAM (Mexico), Arte Institute (USA), Cultivamos Cultura (Portugal) besides the Department of Audio and Visual Arts, Ionian University (Greece). Art is, in so many ways, a reflection of reality, its glorification as well as its challenger, in an instinctive understanding that nothing is stable despite the effort to keep a balance between the comfort of belief and the delusion of control. Art and science interrelations are not always clear and one could have the impression that the artist seems more permeable to the influence of science than the scientist to the influence of art. Art’s playfully transgressive nature offers creative bypasses to the grammar of science and expands the dialogue with its openness to a multiplicity towards the new. Nevertheless, art – albeit its originary affinity with the taboo – is never completely liberated from moral considerations. Deeply involved into this lively discourse on the nature of the taboo, art becomes the very domain of contemporary experimentation with transgression, in order to provoke and sparkle discourse, catalyzing possible forms of transcendence.
