As consequence of the disentitling labour of the first half of the 19th century they are the inventories of 1820-1821 and 1835. Between the most complete for Canaries, from the bibliographical point of view, the correspondents are to the Franciscan convent of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, in Garachico (Tenerife). The first one of the mentioned records, which began on December 28, 1820, describes the library of the monastery, in which they distinguish themselves up to 642 degrees, between which two Erasmus direct texts consist at least, as well as others attributable and some several others of Spanish followers of the great humanist.

In our opinion, there is a need to set the basis for this study of the public clock and timekeeping in the Canary Islands which represents the first step towards an in-depth study of time at both the public and the private level. It is a question, undoubtedly, of an important chapter of the cultural history of time in the islands of the Atlantic Ocean that, in the future, can provide new and productive research projects. The subject has not been much researched in the past with only a few observations on this respect and sporadic but interesting information, both in various essays and monographs on the historical-artistic heritage of the Islands.

The painter Jose Aguiar García (Cuba, 1895-Madrid, 1976) joined the Freemasonry, via the Añaza lodge of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 1930. He then went to further his knowledge of art, and it was there that he learnt about fascist ideology, a result of which was that he joined the Spanish Falange in 1934 when he was living in Madrid. The artist, who was very successful at both an international and national level, tried to find the ideas of harmony and balance in Freemasonry, which he would eventually fin in the Italian artists of the Renaissance, i. e. the splendor ordinis as opposed to the chaos and anarchy of the Vanguard.

This article explores the debate which arose in the late 19th century, between the Freemasonry and the catholic Church in the Canary Islands. It studies the influence of foreign ideas, especially from The United States, on the Canary and Spanish Masons, and examines the role of the catholic press in its defense of the evangelical principles, as opposed to the Freemasonry’s lay and agnostic attitudes of the Freemasonry. An interpretive hypothesis is suggested about of Diego Ponte mausoleum, which was built by the architect and French Mason Adolphe Coquet, who came to the Canaries, in 1882, for the construction of the monument.

The present study is an attempt of approximation to the role played by the Freemasonry in the national construction of two Spanish ex-colonies: Cuba and Morocco, during the last third of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. It is a question of the first exploration of a topic of great intercultural, social and political interest. It splits of the base of considering the Freemasonry to be a crucible of cultures (melting pot) and, for this reason, both processes are juxtaposed, the Cuban and the Moroccan, in order to realize future comparative studies. There is verified the difficult integration of the black citizen in Cuba, whereas in Morocco the Masons try to create a multicultural community based on the tolerance and the brotherhood, though the nationalism is rejected.
