By analysing three paradigmatic passages, this paper explores how Prudentius uses classical love motifs and imagery not only to lambast paganism, but also as a powerful rhetorical tool to convey his Christian message. The ‘fire of love’ imagery is conspicuous inPsychomachia53–57, which wittily blends Christian and erotic language. In an entirely different context (C. Symm.2.1071–1085), theflamma amorisis also fully exploited to depict lustful young Vestal Virgins, in combination with other classical metaphors of passion, such as the ‘wound of love’ and thesigna amoris. Additionally, the contrast between heat and cold is a central element in the description of the Vestals’ tardy nuptials, redolent of classical satirical portraits ofvetulae libidinosae. Finally, inHamartigenia628–636 the relationship between the soul and God draws from a Christian tradition of bridal (and coital) representation, but the lapse into sin is portrayed as the love triangle, typical of the Latin love elegy....

This introductory chapter reflects on the characters that populate the Game of Thrones universe and on violence and warfare in the saga. It presents briefly Martin’s characters as one of the mainstays and inducements of both the novels and the TV series, especially because the author has peopled his universe with complex, three-dimensional individuals. It also assesses the uses and presence of violence and war. This chapter also highlights how modern fantasy, and in particular Martin’s work, has the ability to combine very different aesthetic elements, including the strong influence of Graeco-Roman culture, with a view to creating a surprising product that challenges the preconceptions of readers—and viewers—while including recognisable cultural references.

In line with some recent studies, this paper analyses a passage from Prudentius’s Cathemerinon (4.16-18) illustrating the blending of the religious and the erotic: the metaphor of entering the heart, together with the image of drinking and the allusion to marrow are reminiscent of passages describing love in pagan poetry. Prudentius masterfully alters and combines these powerful images with biblical echoes, adapting them to such an extent that these implications are usually overlooked by most translators and commentators.

This paper is conceived as an addendum to the Diccionario de Motivos Amatorios en la Literatura Latina (ss. III a.C.-II d.C.) and it surveys the motif of silence in love Latin poetry from Catullus to Late Antiquity. On the one hand, it analyses silence as an “absence of noise” in different contexts: night silence, silence in nature, silence and solitude, and the contrast between external quiet and the lover’s internal turmoil. On the other hand, it explores the different literary usages of silence as an “absence of speech”: it can be a symptom of love, a strategy of seduction or a sign of indifference, lack of passion, self-control or oblivion; silence can also be the result of unspeakable feelings, shame, grief or fear; victims and witnesses of sex abuse are silenced because they are traumatised, mutilated or metamorphosed. Finally, the relationship between silence, bragging and sex is also investigated in humorous contexts.
KEY WORDS: Silence in literature, love motifs, silentium, silencing, speech loss, speechlessness.

Spect. 18 and 19 as totally independent epigrams: Spect. 18 describes an animal fight and is structurally a complete poem; Spect. 19 refers to a fight between a man and a bull, a damnatio ad bestias staged as a mythological story. They may not refer to the same spectacle, having nonetheless something in common: their respective protagonists (bull and man) are tossed up in the air by their opponents. Martial describes these events in a witty and enigmatic way, not without a sense of humour.

These pages encompass the manifold implications of Martial IV 22, both in the light of the whole book IV and its Ovidian reminiscences. Whereas the influence of Ovid's tale of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus on this passage has been widely recognised, not enough attention has been paid to the echoes of the Latin love elegy. The elegiac conventions in the erotic field colour a new reading of this epigram.

This book focuses on the characters that populate the Game of Thrones universe and on one of the most salient features of their interaction: violence and warfare. It analyses these questions from a multidisciplinary perspective that is chiefly based on Classical Studies. The book is divided into two sections. The first section explores Martin’s characters as the mainstay of both the novels and the TV series, since the author has peopled his universe with three-dimensional intriguing characters that resonate with the reader/audience. The second section is devoted to violence and warfare, both pervasive in the Game of Thrones universe. In particular, the TV series’ depiction of violence is explicit, going beyond the limits that have seldom been traversed in primetime television i.e. the execution of Ned Stark, the “Red Wedding” and “Battle of the Bastards”. In the Game of Thrones universe, violence is not only restricted to warfare but is an everyday occurrence, a result of the social and gender inequalities characterising the world created by Martin.

A Prosopography to Martial’s Epigrams is the first dictionary of all the characters and personal names found in the work of Marcus Valerius Martialis, containing nearly 1,000 comprehensive entries. Each of them compiles and analyses all the relevant information regarding the characters themselves, as well as the literary implications of their presence in Martial’s poems. Unlike other works of this kind, the book encompasses not only real people, whose positive existence is beyond doubt, but also fictional characters invented by the poet or inherited from the cultural and literary tradition. Its entries provide the passages of the epigrams where the respective characters appear; the general category to which they belong; the full name (in the case of historical characters); onomastic information, especially about frequency, meaning, and etymology; other literary or epigraphical sources; a prosopographical sketch; a discussion of relevant manuscript variants; and a bibliography. Much attention is paid to the literary portrayal of each character and the poetic usages of their names. This reference work is a much needed tool and is intended as a stimulus for further research.

This introductory chapter reflects on the time, space, and culture of the Game of Thrones universe. It points out that one of the aspects to which the saga owes most of its success and appeal is precisely Martin’s creative process, namely, how he has designed, structured, developed, and made plausible his fantasy world. Game of Thrones is analysed here as a complex, eclectic, and pulp-type universe that borrows from many historical periods, geographical areas, and characters to build a credible world. Furthermore, this paper reflects on how the thought-provoking and courageous eclecticism of Martin’s inspirations generates a profusion of references masterfully linked and framed in the same spatiotemporal and geographical context. Martin created a plausible, but at the same time fantasy, world. Additionally, the impact of the saga is assessed, by presenting the main facts and figures of this amazing achievement that has turned Game of Thrones into an authentic global phenomenon.
