By analysing three paradigmatic passages, this paper explores how Prudentius uses classical love motifs and imagery not only to lambast paganism, but also as a powerful rhetorical tool to convey his Christian message. The ‘fire of love’ imagery is conspicuous inPsychomachia53–57, which wittily blends Christian and erotic language. In an entirely different context (C. Finally, inHamartigenia628–636 the relationship between the soul and God draws from a Christian tradition of bridal (and coital) representation, but the lapse into sin is portrayed as the love triangle, typical of the Latin love elegy....

[ABSTRACT] This  article  analyses  Don  Winslow’s  novels  City  on  Fire  (2022)  and  City  of  Dreams  (2023) against the backdrop of the contemporary profusion of Trojan-themed narratives rewriting the Greco-Roman epic tradition. Critical emphasis is placed on the techniques employed to reposition and interweave the mythic material, their actants and reading strata. As a corollary, close attention is paid to the complex metafictional negotiation mainly executed in City of Dreams, especially in relation to the Aeneid, while critically scrutinising the transposition of the love affair between Dido and Aeneas. By resignifying ancient and modern myths, this saga offers a profound reflection on the vectors of Western culture, human existence and literature itself. Keywords: Don Winslow; City on Fire; City of Dreams; Greco-Roman epic; metafiction; clas-sical reception.

This paper overviews contemporary female-authored rewritings of the Iliad, the Odyssey and the Aeneid. In the 21st century, there has been a noticeable explosion of Trojan-themed novels (especially but not exclusively in the English-speaking world), within the more general framework of retellings of the classics; noteworthy is also their generic and creative variety. This study succinctly traces the lines of evolution of this phenomenon, provides different possibilities for critical exploration and analyses some key characteristics of these narratives, while reflecting on the factors that have led to this expanding literary trend.

In line with some recent studies, this paper analyses a passage from Prudentius’s Cathemerinon (4.16-18) illustrating the blending of the religious and the erotic: the metaphor of entering the heart, together with the image of drinking and the allusion to marrow are reminiscent of passages describing love in pagan poetry. Prudentius masterfully alters and combines these powerful images with biblical echoes, adapting them to such an extent that these implications are usually overlooked by most translators and commentators.

This article investigates Irene Vallejo’s 2015 novel El silbido del arquero, a narrative in the Virgilian tradition mostly inspired by Book IV of the Aeneid. We show how Vallejo reinterprets Dido and Aeneas’s tragic love story by foregrounding minor characters, developing the setting, integrating popular subgenres and exploring communicative anxieties and gender issues. It is argued that patterns of dissatisfaction, self-delusion and disillusionment with human affairs ultimately collide with a message of hope voiced by the fictionalised Virgil.

This paper is a comparative study of two contemporary novels which rewrite Virgil’s
Aeneid: Ursula K. Le Guin’s Lavinia and Irene Vallejo’s El silbido del arquero. Two secondary female characters in the epic poem, Lavinia and Anna, are closely related to Virgil’s presence as a character through Lavinia’s direct dialogues with him and her metafictional self-awareness, and, in the case of Ana, in terms of characterisation and intratextuality. Both protagonists are liminal figures: they live on the borderline between different worlds, childhood and adulthood, the powerful and the lowly, palace life and nature, the divine and the human, life and death. Their stories are simultaneously told and untold in the Aeneid. Their metafictional and liminal identity turns them into vehicles for a meditation on Virgil’s poetic creation, a key element to these narratives.

This paper analyses the love motifs in Nemesianus’ Eclogues, comparing them with their configurarion in previous Latin literature, in order to gauge the innovations of this late Latin poet and to comprehend the interwoven inner structure of the corpus and its relationship with the love literary tradition.

This paper is conceived as an addendum to the Diccionario de Motivos Amatorios en la Literatura Latina (ss. III a.C.-II d.C.) and it surveys the motif of silence in love Latin poetry from Catullus to Late Antiquity. On the one hand, it analyses silence as an “absence of noise” in different contexts: night silence, silence in nature, silence and solitude, and the contrast between external quiet and the lover’s internal turmoil. On the other hand, it explores the different literary usages of silence as an “absence of speech”: it can be a symptom of love, a strategy of seduction or a sign of indifference, lack of passion, self-control or oblivion; silence can also be the result of unspeakable feelings, shame, grief or fear; victims and witnesses of sex abuse are silenced because they are traumatised, mutilated or metamorphosed. Finally, the relationship between silence, bragging and sex is also investigated in humorous contexts.

KEY WORDS: Silence in literature, love motifs, silentium, silencing, speech loss, speechlessness.

This paper offers arguments for a comprehensive interpretation of Mart.
Spect. 18 and 19 as totally independent epigrams: Spect. 18 describes an animal fight and is structurally a complete poem; Spect. 19 refers to a fight between a man and a bull, a damnatio ad bestias staged as a mythological story. They may not refer to the same spectacle, having nonetheless something in common: their respective protagonists (bull and man) are tossed up in the air by their opponents. Martial describes these events in a witty and enigmatic way, not without a sense of humour.

These pages encompass the manifold implications of Martial IV 22, both in the light of the whole book IV and its Ovidian reminiscences. Whereas the influence of Ovid's tale of Salmacis and Hermaphroditus on this passage has been widely recognised, not enough attention has been paid to the echoes of the Latin love elegy. The elegiac conventions in the erotic field colour a new reading of this epigram.

Integration is a buzzword in the 21st century. However, academics still do not agree on its meaning and, above all, on its consequences. This book o fers numerous examples showing that the inhabitants of the Roman Mediterranean were â€oeintegrated†, i.e. were aware of the existence of a common framework of coexistence, without this necessarily resulting in a process of cultural convergence. For instance, the Spanish poet Martial explicitly refused to be considered the brother of the Greek Charmenion (10.65): paradoxically, while rea rming their di ferences, his satirical epigram con rms the existence of a common frame of reference that encompassed them both. Understanding integration in the Roman world requires paying attention to the complex and varied responses to diversity in Roman times.

This book focuses on the characters that populate the Game of Thrones universe and on one of the most salient features of their interaction: violence and warfare. It analyses these questions from a multidisciplinary perspective that is chiefly based on Classical Studies. The book is divided into two sections. The first section explores Martin’s characters as the mainstay of both the novels and the TV series, since the author has peopled his universe with three-dimensional intriguing characters that resonate with the reader/audience. The second section is devoted to violence and warfare, both pervasive in the Game of Thrones universe. In particular, the TV series’ depiction of violence is explicit, going beyond the limits that have seldom been traversed in primetime television i.e. the execution of Ned Stark, the “Red Wedding” and “Battle of the Bastards”. In the Game of Thrones universe, violence is not only restricted to warfare but is an everyday occurrence, a result of the social and gender inequalities characterising the world created by Martin.

A Prosopography to Martial’s Epigrams is the first dictionary of all the characters and personal names found in the work of Marcus Valerius Martialis, containing nearly 1,000 comprehensive entries. Each of them compiles and analyses all the relevant information regarding the characters themselves, as well as the literary implications of their presence in Martial’s poems. Unlike other works of this kind, the book encompasses not only real people, whose positive existence is beyond doubt, but also fictional characters invented by the poet or inherited from the cultural and literary tradition. Its entries provide the passages of the epigrams where the respective characters appear; the general category to which they belong; the full name (in the case of historical characters); onomastic information, especially about frequency, meaning, and etymology; other literary or epigraphical sources; a prosopographical sketch; a discussion of relevant manuscript variants; and a bibliography. Much attention is paid to the literary portrayal of each character and the poetic usages of their names. This reference work is a much needed tool and is intended as a stimulus for further research.

Abstract

This introductory chapter reflects on the time, space, and culture of the Game of Thrones universe. It points out that one of the aspects to which the saga owes most of its success and appeal is precisely Martin’s creative process, namely, how he has designed, structured, developed, and made plausible his fantasy world. Game of Thrones is analysed here as a complex, eclectic, and pulp-type universe that borrows from many historical periods, geographical areas, and characters to build a credible world. Furthermore, this paper reflects on how the thought-provoking and courageous eclecticism of Martin’s inspirations generates a profusion of references masterfully linked and framed in the same spatiotemporal and geographical context. Martin created a plausible, but at the same time fantasy, world. Additionally, the impact of the saga is assessed, by presenting the main facts and figures of this amazing achievement that has turned Game of Thrones into an authentic global phenomenon.

The series of novels by G.R.R. Martin, A Song of Ice and Fire, adapted for the screen with the title Game of Thrones, has become a true mass phenomenon worldwide. The books are eagerly awaited by their fans, while the broadcast of the episodes of the series breaks ratings and HBO subscriptions, and any news about it is featured in the first page of newspapers worldwide. The episodes of the last season have become the most downloaded files on the Internet ever.
Previous studies have shown the richness of both the books and the series. The battles, the political plots, the internal or family struggles, the landscapes and scenarios, the motivations of the characters, the ethnic groups represented, the expressly invented languages, among many other subjects, provide numerous possibilities for analysis. The study of this world through the diverse perspectives provided by the Humanities and its academic rigor, will offer a new and enriching vision of this fantasy land and our own world.
What does a linguist have to say about the Dothraki language? A specialist of Communication studies about the phenomenon of fans? A political scientist about the machinations in King's Landing? A historian of the Roman world about the circle formation of the "Battle of the Bastards"? A jurist about the possibilities of bastard children to inherit? An economic historian about the Iron Bank? A classicist about the motives of Roman literature in the world of Game of Thrones? A geographer on the topography of the Seven Kingdoms? Etc, etc.

Etc. etc.
