Abstract: Hackers are known mainly through powerful images provided to us by Hollywood. Production of these films has not happened in a vacuum, they reflect a specific moment and society in which they were released. In this essay, I try to contextualize several Hollywood movies with hackers as protagonists to understand how the social conditions at the time influenced representation on the silver screen. I select a sample of seven films from different decades: Tron (1982), Wargames (1983), Hackers (1995), Takedown (1998), Matrix (1999) Antitrust (2001) and Blackhat (2015). In them, I analyze the representation of technology, the challenge to authority by hackers, the discussions about source code, the role of female characters, and the film genre. The results show a change in representation over time that links directly to specific events broadcasted in news media and other outlets.
