İbn Sina(Avicenna)

در نوشته‌ی پیشِ رو به بررسیِ چاپِ انتشاراتِ مولی از دانشنامه‌ی علاییِ ابنِ سینا می‌پردازم. در این راستا می‌کوشم به کوتاهی از ویژگی‌های ساختاریِ دانشنامه و جایگاهِ آن در میانِ نوشته‌های ابنِ سینا سخن بگویم. هم‌هنگام با این هدف، افزون بر تاریخچه‌ی ویرایشِ دانشنامه‌ی علایی، تبارِ چاپیِ ویراستِ مولی را نشان می‌دهم، و گوشه‌ای از درستی‌ها و نادرستی‌های رخ‌داده در کارِ خطیرِ ناشر و دیباچه‌نگارِ دانشنامه را گوشزد می‌کنم. همچنین بر اهمیتِ آموزشی و فلسفیِ دانشنامه‌ی علایی همچون نوشتاری جامع در فلسفه‌ی سینوی انگشت‌گذارده، بر ابنِ سیناپژوهان، و به‌ویژه همزبانانِ ابنِ سینا، به دلیلِ کم‌توجهی و کم‌لطفی به این نوشتارِ ارجمند خرده می‌گیرم، و بر چراییِ آن اندک پرتوی می‌افکنم. روشن خواهم کرد که چرا ویراستِ مولی از نظرِ تصحیح اثری‌ است ناکام، و از نظرِ فلسفی مهم‌ترین نوآوریِ ساختاریِ ابنِ سینا را ضایع کرده است. خواهم گفت که دیباچه‌ی بلندِ دانشنامه هیچ پیوندی با متنِ کتاب ندارد و از نظرِ پژوهشی نیز چیزی به دانسته‌های ما پیرامونِ دانشنامه‌ی علایی نمی‌افزاید. برین پایه، این ادعا را پیش می‌نهم که دانشنامه‌ی علایی همچنان نیازمند است به یک ویراستِ انتقادیِ دیگر، با بهره‌گیری از دانشِ نسخه‌شناسی و بر اساسِ نسخه‌های بیشتر، و بلکه همه‌ی نسخه‌های پرشمارِ آن.
In the present piece, I examine the most recent edition of Avicenna’s Danešnāme-ye ʿAlāyī published by Mawlā Publishing house in Tehran. With this aim, I will briefly discuss the structural characteristics of the Danešnāme and situate it within Avicenna's oeuvre in respect to his other summae. Arguing for the significance of Danešnāme-ye ʿAlāyī as a comprehensive summa of Avicennan philosophy, I will draw attention to its neglect and marginalization by contemporary Avicennan scholarship, even in the Persian speaking world, and suggest reasons for the regrettable underestimation of this invaluable text. Having provided an overview of the editorial and publishing genealogy of the Danešnāme, and then of Mawlā’s earnest edition, I will consider a number of errors and shortcomings exhibited by the latter, whilst acknowledging some of its merits. I will identify certain systematic flaws in the editorial techniques that inform Mawlā’s edition, on the one hand, and a structural mistake that has entirely ruined one of the characteristic philosophical innovations of the Danešnāme, on the other hand. I observe that the long preface to the text bears no relation to the Danešnāme, and provides scholars with no useful insight into either Avicennan philosophy in general or the Danešnāme in particular. Concluding that the Mawlā edition is woefully lacking, I suggest that Danešnāme-ye ʿAlāyī still stands in need of a new critical edition based on sounder editing techniques, and informed by consideration of a wider range of manuscripts. If we are to gain a more comprehensive picture of the development of Avicenna’s philosophical project, I urge the scholarly community to pay this work the careful attention that it deserves.

La  révélation en tant que forme de langage exprime la vérité en termes non apodictiques. Cette définition, qui insiste sur la dimension linguistique du Coran, implique des éléments de tension. Et cela non seulement, comme le reconnaissaient déjà les théologiens du Kalām, à cause de l’écart qu’il faut nécessairement poser entre le langage de Dieu et celui de l’homme. La réflexion philosophique ne peut pas s’empêcher d’ajouter, aux difficultés sémantiques de la théologie, une question ultérieure : quel est le rapport entre le texte sacré et la vérité ? Le problème de la philosophie n’est donc plus seulement celui de la langue – le langage divin est supérieur, éternel et inaccessible mais il doit en même temps être soumis aux règles de la langue (il doit être compréhensible voire signifiant et analysable dans les termes de la critique sémantique) – mais aussi celui de son contenu de vérité.

فبعض هذه الأمور إنما يجب عليه من جهة ما هُوَ طبيب أن يتصوره بالماهية فقط تصوراً علمياً، ويصدّق بهليته تصديقاً عَلَی أنه وضع له مقبول من صاحب الْعِلْم الطَّبِيعِيّ ، وبعضها يلزمه أن يبرهن عليه فى صناعته، فما كان من هذه كالمبادئ فيلزمه أن يتقلد هليتها، فإن مبادئ العلوم الْجُزْئِيَّة مسلمة وتتبرهن وتتبين فى علوم اُخَر أقدم منها، وهكذا حتّي يرتقي مبادئ العلوم كُلّها إلی الحكمة الأوْلی التي يقال لها علم ما بعد الطبيعة. وإذا شرع بعض المتطببين وأخذ يَتَكَلَّم فى إثبات العناصر والمزاج وما يتلو ذلك مما هُوَ موضوع الْعِلْم الطَّبِيعِيّ فإنه يغلط من حيث إنه يورد فى صناعة الطِّبِّ ما لَيْسَ من صناعة الطِّبِّ ويغلط من حيث يظن أنه يبيّن شيئاً ولا يَكُونُ قد بيّنه البتة .

The idea of the Suspended Man in Space or Suspended man in the air is also known with titles of Flying Man or Floating Man and Into Thin Air. Avicenna introduces this idea in The Book of Healing, and Remarks and Admonitions (Pointers and Reminders or Al-Ishārāt wa al-Tanbīhāt), and a treatise on Knowledge of the Rational Soul, and in the Risālah aḍḥawīyah fī amr al-miʻād  or Judgment Day. This repetition reflects the importance of this idea in his mind. He also points out this argument in his two writings, Al-Taʿlīqāt and Discussions (al-Mubāḥathāt), which contain his dialogues with his disciples, and provides explanations about some criticisms sustained against the idea. This indicates that, since that time, the idea, which is considered one of Avicenna’s innovations, has been debated and criticized.
we should point out that the idea of the suspended man in space proposed by Ibn Sina, which has had extensive applications in the Muslim world and the Western world to the present time, intends to demonstrate an immaterial soul for man; the soul that perceives itself as intuitive knowledge and is not a body or a part of the body. In this paper, four different interpretations of this idea were presented. For any further critique and analysis of the Avicennian idea of the suspended man, these four readings must be initially taken into account. Among these readings, some considered philosophical and abstract aspects and some considered empirical aspects. With the simultaneous attention to these interpretations, we can gain a more comprehensive view of this argument and, thus, take a more in-depth look at the vital matter of the human soul and its immateriality.

Since the arrival of revealed religions and their encounter with Greek philosophy, the issue of the relationship between reason and revelation has been one of the most important problems in the history of thought. One important aspect of this issue is that it determines and guides the relationship that philosophers have with religious writings, which rest upon faith in divine revelation. Knowing that they are products of a miraculous contact with God, how should one approach them? Can they be read, understood, and evaluated like any other writing? Is a philosophic approach to revealed texts possible? More importantly, are revealed texts compatible with the spirit of philosophy? Do revealed texts approve or disapprove of the pursuit of knowledge through natural human reason?

One of the largest ongoing debates in scholarship on Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā) concerns his epistemology of the first acquisition of intelligible forms or concepts. ‘Emanationists’ hold that intelligibles are emanated by the separate Active Intellect (AI) directly into human minds. ‘Abstractionists’ hold that intelligibles are abstracted by the human intellect from sensory images. Neither of these positions has a satisfactory grip on Avicenna’s philosophy. I propose that the two positions can be reconciled because Avicenna states in many texts that what the AI emanates is a power, and not the various intelligible forms. I argue that this can only be the power of abstraction itself. This new interpretation does greater justice to Avicenna’s system and reveals his unique place in the history of epistemology.

L’idée d’indépendance ou de neutralité par rapport aux modalités de l’existence qui définit la quiddité permet à Avicenne non seulement de parler d’une dualité dans l’être des choses existantes, mais aussi d’utiliser des notions – entre elles apparemment contradictoires – pour qualifier la quiddité : celle de réalité (ou vérité) –, d’un côté,  et celle de possibilité (ou de fausseté), de l’autre. Cette même conception de indépendance foncière de la quiddité – qui permet de compter la quiddité comme un élément à part dans la chose existante, se reconnaît dans la solution au doute qui conclut la Maqāla fī l-tawḥīd de Yaḥyā ibn ‘Adī (mort en 974). La comparaison entre la discussion qu’Avicenne consacre dans sa Métaphysique à la quiddité et le discours de Yaḥyā ibn ‘Adī propose un contexte ultérieur pour l’étude des rapports doctrinaires entre le philosophe et théologien chrétien actif à Baghdad au Xe siècle et l’œuvre du grand philosophe persan.

Common to the many ways in which love was understood in the twin receptions of Plato in pre-modern Europe and the Islamic world was a valorization of the painful lack that induced desire. The salience of love as a topic in globalized contemporary culture, reflecting a narcissistic emphasis on positive thinking, obscures such traditions that celebrated love as a painful encounter with alterity. This course explores such Islamic formulations of love across the entwined discourses of political philosophy and poetry from the tenth to sixteenth centuries, including love as enticement to agonized interpretation, as unhealthy obsession with another, as physically damaging desire for knowledge, as self-annihilating desire for another and as inter-personally achieved ascent to collective happiness.

In previous contributions, I have argued that Averroes aims at a systematic and definitive rejection of Avicenna's philosophy, and that his approach to philosophical sources has two main poles: besides the positive one, represented by Aristotle, a negative one, coinciding with Avicenna. This is attested by several facts. First of all, some of Averroes' treatises are openly aimed at the rebuttal of Avicenna's positions, either in globo (with a polemical intention expressed in the title) or in the context of specific, independent sections. Even in works whose anti-Avicennian aim is not explicit from the outset or is not structurally evident, criticisms of Avicenna are numerous, and frequently accompanied by long and detailed argumentations. Second, criticisms are wide-ranging, in so far as they address all the main areas of Avicenna's philosophy, from logic, to the different sections of natural philosophy, to metaphysics, and they are often repeated in similar terms in different works. That is to say, Averroes' attacks against Avicenna's positions are not occasional and incidental diversions, but represent a leitmotiv and a concentric target of these works. Finally, the tone of the criticisms is derogatory: Averroes tends by all means to stress the gravity of Avicenna's errors, and he employs towards this end a style that is direct, emphatic, and polemical, speaking of Avicenna as 'this man', expressing surprise in front of his mistakes, and insisting on the faulty character of his positions 2. 1 I am grateful to Dag Nikolaus Hasse for his insightful comments on a draft of this article, and to Jon Bornholdt for the careful revision of the English. The most important goal in human life is to achieve happiness, and because people are subject to certain ideas and beliefs and have a different system of thought, it has led to different interpretations of happiness. If the Sufis interpret happiness around the orbit of inner happiness in the soul, not related to material achievements such as money, children, prestige, offspring, and others, then this is different from the interpretation of the happiness of two Muslim philosophers, Ibn Sīnā and al-Fārābī. In this article, with a descriptive-analytical method and using library resources, we first try to study the lexicon of the word happiness and the views of other thinkers in this regard, in the following, what are happiness, the levels of happiness, and the classification of happiness in the intellectual system of Ibn Sīnā and al-Fārābī. Happiness in Ibn Sīnā and al-Fārābī's thought is the same concern of human perfectionism from the beginning of creation, and this has caused these two philosophers to discuss this in their different works, and both philosophers do not know human happiness as anything other than reaching God and His pleasure.

L’image d’Avicenne varie avec le temps. Aux XVIe et XVIIe siècles, il est regardé comme un grand médecin et une grande autorité, même si son oeuvre philosophique – à quelques exceptions près – est presque ignorée. La première véritable tentative de connaître ou reconnaître la philosophie avicennienne au XVIIe siècle est celle de Pierre Vattier, qui contribua à une connaissance authentiquement philosophique de la pensée du al-šayh al-ra’īs,
mais aussi à sa célébration telle qu’on la retrouve dans quelques textes du XVIIIe siècle. Avec les progrès du travail d’exhumation et d’édition des textes réalisés par les orientalistes, les oeuvres qui ne furent pas traduites en latin au moyen âge acquièrent de l’importance.
Avicenne est alors soit un transmetteur, un
aristotélicien, soit un mystique.  Avicenne est ainsi une figure double. Partisans de l’idée qui veut que la philosophie soit ‘autre’ en terre d’Islam par rapport à ce qu’elle est en Occident, les orientalistes insistent sur l’irrationalité (ou le manque d’originalité) d’Avicenne. Pour les historiens de la philosophie du XIXe siècle, Avicenne est par contre essentiellement un précurseur, à savoir source des erreurs des scolastiques. Ainsi la médiation du savoir grec à l’Occident  devient-elle la source de déviations, d’erreurs par rapport à la vérité et à la
rationalité chrétiennes. Au début du XXe siècle, l’invention des catégories d’‘augustinisme avicennisant’, d’‘avicennismo agostinistico’ ou encore d’‘avicennisme’, s’inscrit dans un mouvement qui reprend l’idée des ‘erreurs’ d’Avicenne pour la nuancer, la corriger, et parvenir enfin à lui substituer le concept d’influence.

The Shi’ah Institute in London arranged the publication of an English translation of one of the most popular Iranian textbooks of the Avicennan tradition of metaphysics in Islam. First printed in Persian in 1956, Mahdī Ḥaʾirī Yazdī’s Universal Science gives an un-contextualized presentation of the most important discussions that happened within Avicennan metaphysics since its inception in the 11th century.

This paper addresses discussions in post-Avicennan Arabic logic on various characterizations of metathetic propositions and their status vis-à-vis the existential import condition by focusing on the arguments made by Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 606/1210) and the counter-arguments by Quṭb al-Dīn al-Rāzī al-Taḥtānī (d. 766/1365), both of whom established their positions in a framework drawn by Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 428/1037), the most prominent figure in the tradition of classical Arabic logic. In his logic texts, Avicenna thoroughly discusses the problem of the existential import in metathetic propositions (ma'dūla), and seems to have presumed the existential import to be a truth-condition for affirmative propositions, and therefore, for affirmative metathetic propositions as well. For Avicenna, in other words, an affirmative metathetic proposition presumes its subject-terms's possibly existent referent(s). However, the theologian philosopher Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, who lived about a century and half after Avicenna, criticized his views on metathetic propositions and their existential import among other things, thereby igniting a wave of debates in the tradition, in which Quṭb al-Dīn al-Taḥtānī participated in the following century. By studying this contained problem, this paper seeks to address a wider scholarly concern regarding the vitality of post-classical Arabic logic, and to establish that this period witnessed the flourishing of philosophical debate among Arabic logicians.

Commentators of both traditions differ on the basic claim and purpose of the flying man experiment, depending the ontological and epistemological attitudes they emphasize. This study firstly tries to clarify the claim and purpose of the experiment, inasmuch as it forms the basis of Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī’s criticisms. Uno dei tratti distintivi della dottrina avicenniana della profezia è il doppio trattamento che questo tema riceve, da due angolature differenti, in psicologia e in metafisica. La trattazione metafisica della profezia da parte di Avicenna equivale ad una vera e proria “fondazione” epistemologica di questo cruciale elemento della civiltà arabo-islamica, come delle altre due culture monoteiste abramitiche con cui essa interagisce, congruente con la visione avicenniana della metafisica come scienza che fonda i principi di tutte le altre discipline, inclusa la psicologia.
Il presente contributo esamina comparativamente la dottina della profezia che Avicenna espone nel Kitāb al-Nafs (Libro dell’anima) e nell’Ilāhiyyāt (Scienza delle cose divine) del suo magnum opus filosofico, la summa Kitāb al-Šifāʾ (Libro della guarigione, o della cura). L’analisi intende mostrare come nell’Ilāhiyyāt la profezia venga approcciata da una prospettiva tipicamente ontologica e dimostrata come necessaria, e come le tre facoltà profetiche trattate in materia irrelata in tre luoghi differenti del Kitāb al-Nafs (profezia immaginativa, intellettuale ed operativa) vengano ricondotte ad un quadro unitario: in due passi continui della parte conclusiva dell’ Ilāhiyyāt, Avicenna argomenta che il profeta legislatore riceve la rivelazione divina grazie alla profezia immaginativa; che condizione di questa è il raggiungimento del livello di perfezione noetica corrispondente alla profezia intellettuale; e che la profezia operativa viene utilizzata dal profeta-legislatore per ottenere, tramite i miracoli, il prestigio sociale di cui ha bisogno per imporre al popolo la legge rivelata.

In the last 30 years, information technology produced tens of thousands of information systems covering and infiltrating into almost all the aspects of human endeavor, from business processes to linguistics, from military to life sciences and driverless cars. To have effective and precise communication among the different people (system analysts, architects, designers, programmers, testers, etc.) working in the IT industry, the necessity of a standardized language capable of representing cognitive models of such a variety of the different areas of reality emerged.
After different trials, in 1997, UML (Unified Modeling Language), a widely known general-purpose modeling language used in software engineering, developed and maintained by OMG (Object Management Group) to respond to this demand, was standardized. UML is a useful tool for capturing and representing abstract
entities' essence and their relations, processes, and behavior of different systems.

For conceptual modeling focusing on the areas where the ontology is critical, OntoUML, an ontology-driven conceptual modeling language, practically an extension of UML, was proposed in 2005 by Giancarlo Guizzardi and his colleagues working in Ontology & Conceptual Modeling Research Group (NEMO). OntoUML is based on
the theoretical ground worked out in the Unified Foundational Ontology (UFO).
Because UML and OntoUML have the capability to represent abstract conceptual structures in a highly standardized and formalized manner - in my opinion - they have the intrinsic capacity to be used in such surprising areas as philosophy.

The scope of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of the graphical representation of philosophical concepts using UML and OntoUML diagrams and methods. This approach could help in philosophy for mapping, explaining, clarifying, and model checking, in the same way as symbols in mathematics.

Abstract
Some symptoms of heart illness can be due to diseases originating from other organs. In Persian
medicine (PM), this state is called participatory heart diseases. Current medical fndings have found
an important association between symptoms of psychiatric disorders and chest pain. Some of the
other organs such as the lungs, liver, stomach, intestines and uterus have a proven effect on the heart.
This relationship between the heart and other body organs has been considered by different ancient
medical doctrines during a long historical period. In this article participatory heart diseases are explained from the viewpoint of Avicenna.

İbn Sînâ, Orta Çağ’da yetişmiş önemli bir tıp alimidir. İlmi kabiliyeti yüksek olan İbn Sînâ, gençliğinden itibaren ilim meraklılarının dikkatini çekmeyi başarmıştır. Bilhassa tıp ilmi alanındaki bilgisi ve becerisi onu daha da ünlü yapmıştır. Tıp alanındaki en büyük ve en önemli çalışması 1012 yılında başlayıp on yılı aşkın bir sürede bitirdiği el-Kânûn fi’t-Tıbb adlı eseridir. İbn Sînâ, bu eser vasıtasıyla Hipokrat ve Galen gibi ismi ve eseriyle çağının ötesine geçebilmiştir. El-Kânûn fi’t-Tıbb, batı dilleri arasından Latinceye ilk kez XII. yüzyılda Gerard de Crenoma tarafından tercüme edilmiştir. Bu eser daha sonra Avrupa’da İbranice’ye de çevrilmiş ve bazı bilim insanları Arapçası ya da Gerard de Crenoma’nın tercümesinden daha ziyade bu İbranice metni kullanmıştır ve eser her iki şekilde de yayınlanmıştır. Ayrıca bu eser, ihtiva ettiği bilgilerden dolayı XI. yüzyılın sonundan itibaren Avrupa’da kurulmaya başlayan tıp okullarında batılı bilim insanlarınca başvuru eseri olarak kullanılmaya başlanmıştır.
Ülkemizde İbn Sînâ’nın eserinin Orta Çağ Avrupası’nda kimler tarafından tercüme edildiği ve ne zaman yayınlandığı hususunda pek çok çalışma olmasına rağmen, eserin ders müfredatlarındaki yerine dair henüz bir çalışma yapılmamıştır. Biz de bu çalışmamızda, erişime açık olan tıp okullarının dönem kaynakları ile sonradan yapılan çalışmalardan yola çıkarak el-Kânûn fi’t-Tıbb’ın batıdaki ders müfredatlarında kullanımına belirli dönemlerdeki örnekleriyle ışık tutmaya çalışacağız.

Abstract
Avicenna is an important medical scholar who grew up in the Middle Age. Avicenna, who has a high scientific ability, has managed to attract the attention of science enthusiasts since his youth. His knowledge and skills, especially in the field of medical science, made him even more famous. His biggest and most important work in medicine is his work named The Canon of Medicine, which started in 1012 and completed over a decade. Thanks to this work, Avicenna was able to go beyond his age with his name and work like Hippocrates and Galen. The Canon of Medicine was translated into Latin for the first time in the 12th century from the western languages by Gerard de Crenoma. This work was later translated into Hebrew in Europe, and some scientists used this Hebrew text, rather than the translation of Arabic or Gerard de Crenoma, and the work was published in both ways. In addition, this work has been used as a reference by western scientists in medical schools that started to be established in Europe since the end of the 11th century due to the information it contains.
Although there are many studies on who translated and when published the work of Avicenna in medieval Europe in our country, no study has yet been done on the place of the work in the curriculum. In this study, we will try to shed light on the use of The Canon of Medicine in the western curricula of certain schools, based on the primary resources of medical schools that are open to access.

مسئله هراس از مرگ از مسائلی است که  از یک‌سو در تاریخ فلسفه و از سوی دیگر، در تاریخ و اخلاق پزشکی مورد توجه اندیشمندان قرار گرفته است. از گذشته علاوه بر آثار ادبی و نگاه‌های اسطوره‌ای منعکس‌شده در داستان‌ها و نمایشنامه‌ها و متون عرفانی و غنوصی، فیلسوفان نیز نتایج اندیشه‌ ورزی خود را در این خصوص در آثار فلسفی منعکس کرده‌اند. در یونان باستان، در کنار اندیشه‌ ورزی‌های سقراط و افلاطون، اپیکوری‌ها و رواقی‌ها نیز در فلسفه‌ ورزی در زمینه هراس از مرگ سهم بسزایی داشته‌اند. در جهان اسلام نیز اندیشمندانی همچون محمد زکریای رازی و ابوعلی مسکویه و ملاصدرا در اینباره سخن گفته‌اند. امّا در این میان، تنها تک‌نگاری موجود در زمینه هراس از مرگ که به تفصیل این موضوع را مورد توجه قرار داده، منسوب به بوعلی سینا است. از این رساله با نام‌های «الشفاء من خوف الموت ومعالجة داء الاغتمام» و «دفع الغمّ من الموت» یاد شده است. ابن‌سینا هم فیلسوفی برجسته، هم یکی از بزرگترین پزشکان دوره اسلامی است و بنا براین شایسته نظر‌ ورزی در خصوص این مسئله مرزی میان فلسفه و پزشکی است؛ ازاین‌ رو، محققان پس از وی و بویژه پژوهشگران معاصر ارجاعات بسیاری به نگاشته او داشته‌اند. با بهره‌گیری از پژوهش‌های پیشین و برخی دلایل متن‌شناختی دیگر روشن می‌شود که این رساله در اصل بخشی از کتاب تهذیب الأخلاق و تطهیر الأعراق ابوعلی مسکویه است که به اشتباه به ابن‌سینا نسبت داده شده است. این انتساب بدلیل اشتباه ناسخان، به سهو یا به عمد رخ داده است. پس از بررسی وجوه مختلفی که به این اشتباه انجامیده، انتساب این رساله به ابن‌ سینا نفی و صحت انتسابش به مسکویه اثبات می‌شود

Throughout history, the fear of death or thanatophobia has preoccupied philosopher’s ideas and medical issues, and ethics. Since ancient times, philosophers have expressed their ideas about death and fear of dying in their books, alongside literary texts, stories, mystical and gnostic texts. In ancient Greece, in addition to Socrates and Plato, the Epicureans and Stoics played an important role in philosophizing death and thanatophobia. In the realm of Islamic philosophy, thinkers like Muhammad ibn Zakariyyā al-Rāzī (Rhazes), Abū ʿAlī Miskawayh, and Mulla-Sadra have commented on death and thanatophobia. Nevertheless, the only monograph which deals with death and death anxiety in detail is Philosophical Approaches to Thanatophobia and its Treatments, the authorship of which is attributed to the great philosopher and physician of the Islamic world, Avicenna. The work, which is published in the collection of Avicenna’s treatises, has been translated under different titles. As an eminent philosopher and competent physician, Avicenna has aptly philosophized death and thanatophobia, the authenticity has been acknowledged by the numerous references scholars and academicians have made to the work. However, the work, as this study suggests, is wrongly attributed to Avicenna. This treatise is, originally, a part of Abū ʿAlī Miskawayh’s Tahdhīb al-Akhlāq was Taṭhir al-Aʿaraq (Refinement of character and purification of dispositions), wrongly attributed to Avicenna, whether intentionally or inadvertently. Examining different aspects of this wrong attribution, this study textually demonstrates that the treatise is written by Miskawayh.

Aristotle's Met. E1 (VI 1) is the locus classicus for discussions of the relationship between metaphysics and the lower sciences. Some like Simplicius and Zabarella have interpreted the passage as suggesting that metaphysics, as a regina scientiarum (queen of the science) proves the principles of the lower sciences. Other commentators, like Aquinas and Fonseca, argue that metaphysics hands down the principles of the lower sciences but doesn't prove them. In favor of the second interpretation is Aristotle's remark at Posterior Analytics A9 76a 16, that the proper principles of the sciences are not proven. However, Avicenna develops a new conception of the subordination of the sciences in his last logical work, the Remarks and Admonitions Logic, which allows for the subordination of the lower sciences to metaphysics. He also evidences this pattern of subordination between the sciences in his monumental Metaphysics of the Šifā'. This paper shows how Avicenna's interpretation constitutes a middle position between the dominant interpretations of Met. E1 (VI 1), and shows how the principles of the lower sciences are proven in metaphysics as the proper accidents of being. This paper also responds to some of potential objections which might be raised to Avicenna's account.

Öz İhlâs sûresi, Allah'ın varlığını ve birliğini konu edinen yegâne sûre olma niteliğini taşımaktadır. Kısa ancak anlam acısından çok derin manaları içeren bu sûreye dair farklı türden birçok tefsir yazılmıştır. Yazılan bu farklı türdeki tefsirlerden biri de İbn Sînâ'ya aittir. O, yazdığı bu kısa tefsiriyle din ile felsefeyi uzlaştırma çabasının so-mut bir örneğini sunmakla beraber kendisinden sonra İhlâs sûresinin felsefi olarak yorumlanması geleneğinin de başlatıcısı olmuştur. İbn Sînâ'nın varlık ve birlik anla-yışını yansıtan bu tefsirine tarihi süreç içerisinde farklı kişiler tarafından birçok şerh ve hâşiye yazılmıştır. Bu makalede Ebû Saîd Hâdimî'nin (ö. 1762) İbn Sînâ'nın İhlâs sûresi tefsirine yazdığı hâşiye incelenecektir. Hâdimî, aynı zamanda Osmanlı'da selefi düşünceye yakın olan isimlerden Birgivî'nin şârihidir. Hâdimî'nin bu hâşiyesi temel alınarak aynı zamanda İbn Sînâ'nın varlık, yaratma ve birlik anlayışlarına da değinile-cektir. Hâdimî bu hâşiyesini felsefî düşüncenin göz ardı edildiği bir dönemde yazmış-tır. Bu aynı zamanda Hâdimî'nin felsefi düşünceye verdiği önemi göstermektedir. Bu hâşiye ile Hâdimî'nin varlık, birlik ve yaratma meselesinde İbn Sînâ merkezli felsefî bir düşünceye sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Abstract A Commentator on Avicenna in Ottoman Thought in 18th Century: Abu Saîd KHâdimî and His Hashiya of the Surah Ikhlas The Surah Ikhlas bears the characteristic of being the only surah that deals with the existence and unity of Allah. Many commentaries (tafāsir) of differing types have been written on this short but deeply meaningful surah. Avicenna wrote a short tafsir offering a concrete example of efforts to reconcile religion and philosophy. At the same time, with this tafsir he has been the initiator of a tradition of philosophical interpretation of the Surah Ikhlas. Many full commentaries (suruh) and marginal note ♣

For Avicenna, happiness in the afterlife is twofold: on the one hand, it consists, as it does in this life, of the perception of bodily pleasure (this is also how revealed Law explains it); on the other, it is intellectual and involves the soul, in so far as the latter is separate from the body. In this respect, the pleasure of the soul – whose destiny is to become an intellectual world – is absolute. The bases of this doctrine are Avicenna’s intellectual psychology and his theory of knowledge, which in turn explains his philosophical elitism.

Ortaçağ, felsefe ve bilimde İslâm dünyasında ilerlemeyi ifade ederken Batı dünyasında ise Ptolemaiosçu anlayışın Aristocu fizikle birleşerek, Hristiyan teolojik anlayışını bilimsel olarak destekleyen yan unsur haline geldiği bir dönemdi. Felsefe bu dönemde kurumsal din anlayışının bir destekçisi olarak Aristocu bilim anlayışıyla dinsel inancı temellendirirken, metafiziğin de doğrulanmasını sağlamıştı. Bu sistemin temelinde, İsa üzerinden inşa edilmiş kutsiyetin, dünyayı merkeze alan bir kozmolojik anlayışa ve her şeyin bu kabul üzerinden inşa edildiği bir sisteme dönüşmüştü. Ancak XVI. yüzyıldan itibaren matematik, coğrafya ve özellikle astronomideki gelişmeler, öncesindeki Tanrı'nın her şeyi insanlar için yaratmış olması ve dünyanın evrenin merkez konumda olduğu mükemmel ve değişmez olarak nitelendirilen ve tüm dini ve metafizik düşüncenin üzerine inşa edilen bilimsel anlayışın devrimsel olarak değişmesine neden olmuştu.  Bu bilimsel anlayışın değişmesinde ve Rönesans'ın başlamasında etkisi olan Aristoteles'in tercümelerinin, İslâm filozofları İbn Sînâ'nın (980-1037) ve İbn Rüşd'ün (1126-1198) şerhleriyle birlikte kendi düşüncelerinin de girmesi Batı'da hareketlenmelere sebep olmuştu.

Günümüzde ruh-beden ikiciliği/düalizmi denilince akla gelen görüş Descartes’ın (öl. 1650) sistematize etmiş olduğu cevher ikiciliğidir. Adından da anlaşılacağı gibi cevher ikiciliği, iki farklı türde cevherin var olduğu imasında bulunur. Benzer şekilde İbn Sînâ (öl. 428/1037) da nefsin maddeden farklı türde bir cevher olduğunu ifade ederek bir tür cevher ikiciliği benimsemişse de onun ikiciliği Descartes’ınkinden önemli açılardan ayrılmaktadır. Bu önemli ayrılığın, her iki düşüncenin de bambaşka geleneklere ait olmalarından kaynaklandığı söylenebilir. İbn Sînâ’nın ikiciliği Aristocu hilomorfizmin izlerini taşırken, Kartezyen düşünce ise Newton sonrası mekanik evren anlayışı üzerine inşa edilmiştir. Bu önemli fark, her iki filozofun ruh-beden anlayışını da derinden etkilemiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı da farklı geleneklere bağlı olan bu filozofların ruh-beden bağlamındaki ikici anlayışları arasındaki temel ayrılıkları açığa çıkarmaktır. Böylelikle İbn Sînâcı bir düalizmin çağdaş zihin felsefesi açısından nerede durduğu da daha açık bir hale gelecektir. Bu bağlamda, burada üzerinde durulacak ilk soru, her iki filozofun da insanın gayri-maddi cevheri ile kastettikleri şeyin aynı olup olmadığıdır. Bu sorunun cevabı olumsuzdur. Yani İbn Sînâ ve Descartes’ın gayri-maddi cevhere atfettikleri işlevler, birbirinden oldukça farklıdır. Descartes’a göre, ruh, aslında zihinle özdeştir. Zira o, ruhu, özü düşünmek olan cevher şeklinde tarif eder. Descartes’ın düşünme ile kastettiği şey, yalnızca teorik düşünme tarzı değildir. Aynı zamanda o, çağdaş zihin felsefesinde qualia olarak da isimlendirilen, fenomenal bilinci yani bilinçli deneyimleri de kapsamaktadır. Dolayısıyla, Kartezyen geleneğe göre ruh/zihin (gayri-maddi cevher) ile beden arasındaki temel ayrım, fenomenal bilinçtir. Bir şey, ancak ve ancak fenomenal bilince sahip olabiliyorsa ruhanidir. Oysa İbn Sînâ, günümüz Kartezyen düalist geleneğin ruha atfettiği en temel işlev olan fenomenal bilinci, gayri-maddi cevherin temel işlevi olarak görmemektedir. Diğer bir ifadeyle, ona göre, insan nefsinin asıl işlevi hissetmek/deneyimlemek veya fenomenal bilinç sahibi olmak değildir. Zira bu tür işlevleri, gayri-maddi bir cevhere sahip olmayan hayvanlar da yerine getirebilmektedir. İbn Sînâ’ya göre, insan nefsinin asıl işlevi, teorik veya tümel düşünmek ve öz-bilinçtir. Bu sebeple İbn Sînâ, maddi bir cevherin de fenomenal bilince sahip olabileceğini düşünmüştür. Bu ayrımın en net görülebileceği yerlerden biri de söz konusu iki filozofun hayvan ruhları hakkındaki düşünceleridir. Her iki filozof da hayvanların, maddi bedenlerine ek olarak gayri-maddi bir cevhere daha sahip olmadıklarını öne sürerler. Ancak bu durum, bir filozof için (Descartes) hayvanların bilinçsiz birer otomat oldukları anlamına gelirken, diğeri için ise böyle bir şey ifade etmez. Zira İbn Sînâ’ya göre, bilinç veya his sahibi olmak için gayri-maddi bir cevher gerekli değildir. Oysa Descartes’a göre, bir varlığın bilinçli ya da his sahibi olabilmesi, onun gayri-maddi bir cevhere sahip olmasını gerektirir. Hayvanlarda da bu türden (cevhersel) ruhlar olmadığından, Descartes, onları bilinçsiz birer robot olarak görmüştür. Yine aynı hususun gözlemlenebileceği diğer bir nokta da İbn Sînâ’nın, insandaki gayri-maddi cevheri kanıtlamak için öne sürdüğü bir argümandır. Bu argümana göre, gayri-maddi cevherin varlığı, insanın tümel bilgilere erişimi için gereklidir, bilinç sahibi olmak için değil. Oysa Kartezyen gelenek içerisinde kullanılan ve “bilincin birliği argümanı” olarak isimlendirilen argümana göre, gayri-maddi cevherin varlığı, (bilginin değil) bilincin birliği için gereklidir. Elinizdeki çalışma, İbn Sînâ ve Descartes’ın ikiciliğindeki bu tür farklılıklar üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Bu farkları açığa çıkarmak için şu iki nokta üzerinden hareket edilecektir: Hayvanların bilinçli olup olmadıkları meselesi ve İbn Sînâ’nın yukarıda bahsi geçen argümanı. Zira her iki filozofun da bu iki meseleyi ele alışındaki farklılıklar, onların ikici anlayışlarındaki temel farkları ortaya koymamız için bize yol gösterecektir. Bu çalışmada, özellikle bu iki mesele üzerinden, İbn Sînâ ile Descartes’ın ruh-beden bağlamındaki ikici anlayışlarının radikal bir biçimde birbirinden farklı olduğu iddia edilecektir.

Invited talk for "Macrocosms and Microcosms: From Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages," University of Cambridge, 24th - 26th September, 2021.

The map of the pre-modern world, Asia, Africa, and Europe, is drawn collectively in the shape of a bird and fits with the Islamic Neoplatonic conception of the bird as the ultimate mediator between God and his people in communication with the cosmos and God’s angels through the process of emanation. The meaning of the bird in the map is explained through the Neoplatonic doctrine of Emanation (fayd) and the way in which it creates a link between man and God: microcosm to macrocosm.

In Neoplatonic philosophy, the rational soul is symbolized as a bird. When deprived of its natural intellectual ability (symbolized by the ability to fly), the bird/soul falls captive to the instincts and passions of the lower faculties of the animal soul. Imprisoned by the physical demands of matter, it is condemned to endless exile among the desolate wastelands and meaningless signposts of microcosmic earthly existence. At a larger collective metaphoric level, the bird/dove/pigeon symbolizes the plight of the rational souls of all humanity and therefore it can be used as a metaphorical representation for the world.

But the bird can forget its nets and cages and learn to fly again. In this sense, the bird also symbolizes redemption and the possibility of return to the macrocosmic Universal Intellect. It is thus not surprising to find that the bird is an oft-repeated motif in Islamicate culture with a multitude of meanings related to the bird’s reflection of soul and its ability to be closer to the heavens and God.

El artículo examina las tesis atribuidas por Algacel a los fi lósofos e investiga si estas tesis se encuentran en Avicena o no, y en segundo lugar, si Averroes acepta o rechaza éstas. Además, considera la crítica de Algacel y si Averroes acepta o rechaza ésta, y en qué medida tiene éxito cuando la rechaza.

The general question of the relationship between representation (and symbolic representation) and reality, i.e., how — and to what extent — representations stand for and correspond to reality, holds a privileged place of discussion in the Arabic-Islamic tradition: that of prophecy and of the veridical dream . In this contribution I offer some remarks on this topic, especially as regards the theory of so-called ‘imaginative’ prophecy in Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 1037). My purpose is to highlight the fact that in Avicenna’s theory of prophecy, the definition of imaginative prophecy – which is particularly problematic – involves the imaginative-combinative (or combining) power of the human soul in a specific sense: although the imaginative faculty is not properly receptive, the kind of reception imaginative prophecy involves cannot be conceived beyond the imaginative power itself and its role in elaborating symbols. In my analysis I shall be referring mainly (but not exclusively) to the Book of the Healing.

"Autour de la totalité et du non-être dans la Métaphysique d’Avicenne"

L’idée de totalité est à repérer dans la Métaphysique  d’Avicenne (Ibn Sīnā, m. 1037) par rapport à plusieurs thèmes. On pourrait tenter d’en dresser une liste, elle ne serait pas exhaustive. Les passages du Liber de philosophia prima  où la correspondance entre totalitas et l’original arabe  est parfaite sont les plus intéressants du point de vue métaphysique et théologique. Dans le premier, le terme est utilisé afin de montrer que la forme  peut se dire aussi du tout ensemble (li-ǧamī‘ dālika). Dans le deuxième – sur lequel on s’arrête assez longuement – Avicenne présente avec le terme totalitas (al-kulliyya) son idée de création absolue ou instauration (al-ibdā‘).  L’analyse de la légitimation du bien du monde, qui inclut ou est aussi un mal, offre encore  une autre perspective. En général,  c’est  à partir des notions (ou de non-notions) de néant et d’absolu qu’Avicenne élabore l’idée du flux et donc celle de totalité qui la soutient. L'analyse de la totalité permet d’insister  sur la formulation correcte pour exprimer la théorie ontologique avicennienne : d’une part,  tout ce qui n’est pas le Principe doit être en soi un double et donc un composé (qui n’est pourtant pas pour cela un «tout» au sens technique); de l’autre coté, et pour ainsi dire à l’inverse, ici il faut inscrire la définition du Premier principe : le Principe est en effet incomposé et un, car il n’est rien d’autre qu’être ou existence, sans  aucune limitation dépendant de l’essence.

İnsan doğal olarak mutlu olmayı arzulamakta ve bu yüzden haz veren şeylerin peşinden
gitmektedir. İbn Sînâ, hazzı “mülâim (uygun) olması bakımından mülâim olanın
idrakidir” diye tanımlamakta ve akıl için hazzı, âhengi ve kendi yapısına uygun olanı
akletmesi şeklinde tarif etmektedir. Aklın faaliyet alanı olarak da varlığa bütüncül bir
şekilde bakabilmeyi tayin eden İbn Sînâ, bu şekilde insanın Tanrı ve ondan sudur eden
diğer varlıkları, aralarındaki hiyerarşik yapıyı, varlıkta Tanrı’nın inâyet ve hayrının tezahürünü
kavramsal boyutta akılda temsil edilmiş olarak elde edecektir demektedir.
Bu sayede bedene dair geçici lezzetlerden vazgeçerek, ebedî ve değişmez hakikatler ile
bütünleşecek ve İbn Sînâ’nın tabiriyle aklî bir âlem haline gelecektir. Nihâyetinde insan,
ebedî saadete ulaşmak için salt ruhsal varlıklara benzemeye çalışacaktır. Onlarla bütünleşme
isteğinin ve özleminin oluşması için bunun farkında olması gereken insan, söz
konusu bilinci ancak varlık hakkındaki tefekkürle elde edebilecektir.

Une  des questions qui intéressent la prophétie concerne son caractère métaphysique : s’agit-il d’un don gratuit – on dirait « une grâce » – ou est-elle plutôt de nature à suivre une loi, éthique mais aussi physique et enfin métaphysique, de sorte que le prophète doit être conçu comme un individu qui serait métaphysiquement destiné à l’être ? Cet article est consacré à la théorie de la nécessité métaphysique et politique du prophète selon Avicenne.

İbn Sînâ’nın insanlık düşünce dünyasına yaptığı dokunuş göz ardı edilemez bir etkiye sahiptir. Aristoteles’ten sonra “ikinci öğretmen” unvanını hakettiği tartışmasız olan Fârâbî’den sonraki bu sistemli dokunuş, Eflâtun, Aristoteles, Yeni Eflâtunculuk ve hatta İslâm Kelâm geleneğinin sentezini bizlere sunduğu için, İbn Sînâ’nın “Şeyhu’r-Reis” olarak üstatlık tahtında oturduğuna dair söylem gerçekçi bir çıkarımdır. Şeyhu’r-Reis, dünya düşünce tarihinde Batılıların, Doğuya dönüp baktıklarında tanıyıp bildikleri ve benimsedikleri en önemli simalardan biridir. Büyük oranda İslâm düşüncesini şekillendiren ve Gazzâlî ile başlayan Tehâfüt geleneği de, zarar ve yarar bakımından İbn Sînâ’nın düşüncesinden ziyadesiyle etkilenmiştir. Düşünce tarihinin seyrini anlatan hemen her kitap İbn Sînâ’dan iktibas yapmadığında kendisini eksik görmüştür. Bu durum filozofun entelektüel zihninin bugün bile ne kadar kapsayıcı ve geçerli olduğunun ispatıdır. Yakın zamanlara kadar fizik, metafizik ve tıp alanlarında İbn Sînâ’nın reçetelerinin geçerliliğini koruyor olması, Şeyhu’r-Reis’in ilmî derinliğine yeter sebeplerdir.
