Resumo - Este ensaio tem como enquadramento uma etnografia sobre a imigração recente de uma família de brasileiros para Portugal. Descreve o papel central das coisas que trouxeram consigo na reconstrução de hábitos, lembranças e status social do país de origem. Mostra a relação entre mudança, memória e cultura material nessa recriação do significado de lugar e como o lar pode ser simbolicamente reproduzido e reestabelecido a partir dos objetos. Como tal, eles são a dimensão concreta desse desdobramento das suas vidas recém-transformadas pela partida do Brasil e a chegada ao continente europeu. / Abstract - This essay is based on an ethnography on the recent immigration of a Brazilian family to Portugal. Describes the central role of the objects they brought with in the reconstruction of habits, memories and social status of their country of origin. It shows the relationship between move, memory and material culture to recreate the meaning of place and how the home can be symbolically reproduced and reestablished from objects. As such, they are the concrete dimension of this unfolding of their lives recently transformed by the departure of Brazil and the arrival on the European continent. /

Les turbulences du monde contemporain nous conduisent à explorer les phénomènes de changement émergent, ceux qui portent en eux un potentiel d’innovation, que ce soit sur le plan personnel, collectif ou social. En effet, les approches sociotechniques, linéaires et logiques du changement ne nous aident ni à appréhender les problèmes éprouvés dans notre société, nos vies, nos groupes et nos organisations, ni à cerner
les enjeux actuels dans toute leur complexité.

Ce livre explore le changement qui jaillit d’une réflexion collective, et non celui dont on connaît déjà le résultat et qui, de ce fait, appelle une planification visant un but prédéterminé. Comprendre ou animer le changement émergent suppose d’adopter une perspective qui permet de saisir la complexité en action, d’opter pour des modes d’accompagnement et d’intervention différents, pour parvenir à cerner ce qui constitue le coeur d’une transformation. Souvent qualifié de changement « en U », les théories du changement transformationnel font aujourd’hui l’objet d’un réel engouement, tant dans le monde corporatif que communautaire. Toutefois, leur mise en application pose de réels défis, car il ne s’agit pas de soumettre les idées qui surgissent de ces processus
aux contraintes du système en place, mais bien de transformer le système.

Prenant la théorie U de Scharmer comme modèle phare, cet ouvrage présente de nombreux processus en U, les principes servant à guider la mise en oeuvre d’un changement transformationnel, les conditions favorables à celle-ci, ainsi que les enjeux et les fondements d’une perspective éthique et sensible. On y découvre également plusieurs études de cas menées à partir de la théorie de Scharmer et une analyse critique de l’émergence d’une innovation sociale.

This article asks two related questions. First, to what extent has internet activism shaped social protest in Malaysia from the late 1990s to the present? Second, what can the history of internet activism and social protest in Malaysia tell us, if anything, about the 2011 global wave of protests? To address these questions I first compare Malaysia’s techno-political path with that of two very different ‘emerging economies’, South Korea and Brazil, in order to contextualise the subsequent discussion. I then distinguish three key moments in Malaysia’s eventful history of internet activism and social protest, namely the 1998-1999 reformasi movement, the electoral ‘tsunami’ of 2008 (in which the ruling coalition lost its two-thirds majority) and the Bersih 2.0 rallies of 2011. I argue that Bersih 2.0 is best explained as both the latest episode in a series of uniquely Malaysian techno-political events and as a local variant of the global wave of protests of 2011 – a wave in which techno-libertarians such as hackers, online journalists and technology lawyers, as well as ordinary citizens using social media, played an important part. The article ends with a summary and with suggestions for further research.

The work of Denys Lasdun has been traditionally valued by its great spatial quality, its elegance and its capacity to develop a new formal tectonic language. Nevertheless, Alvin Boyarsky defi ned Lasdun’s architecture as an architecture of etcetera, implying that his projects were conceptually complex, full of nuances and meanings, and with an important affi liation to the natural world.  Following the appreciation, we will study the project of East Anglia University in Norwich as an epitome of one important hidden objective that guided the genealogy and social aims of some remarkable works of the English architect. Far beyond the biological analogy, we will analyze that Lasdun’s interest in natural processes transcends the usual positivist and scientifi c frame. His understanding of the links and resonances of architecture with Nature, comprehend also the human and social sphere. It is the broader concept of life the one that shapes an intuitive, free and holistic view of the Lasdun’s postwar architecture. Being also aware of the raise of the organic discourse that arises in England with the important impulse of Bruno Zevi, Lasdun fuses both sources as a counterpoint to the most academic and conformist practice with the pragmatic necessities and social realities. This way, he manages to develop a personal discourse and lexicon that imprints his projects of the fi fties and sixties, and culminates with the University of East Anglia as a proto-organism. Through this project and some earlier works deeply related to it, Lasdun investigates formal and structural possibilities to think the work of architecture as a non-closed system, capable of growth and change; as an inconclusive and adaptable statement ready to be responsive to circumstances, goals, and human needs and aims.

This article is a brief response to the issues highlighted by Synesiou’s article in this issue, and Hetherington’s response to the article. Both contributors raise important points but especially the reflexive question of what is a body and where was it when they were writing their articles? Our moment-to-moment felt sense of ‘body’ brings us back to our first person experience, offering a touchstone for any explorations around ‘body’.

SF co-developer Steve de Shazer wrote, in his classic publications Keys to Solution in Brief Therapy (1985) and Clues: Investigating Solutions in Brief Therapy (1988), that SF practitioners should help their clients create an expectation of beneficial change by getting a description of what they would do differently once the problem was solved. Also, he claimed subtle and implicit interventions by the SF practitioner would work best. At the time, de Shazer did not support these claims with empirical evidence. This article provides evidence for each of the assertions made by de Shazer. Only part of the evidence presented here was already available at the time of de Shazer’s writing. Evidence is discussed from diverse lines of research like Rosenthal’s Pygmalion studies, Dweck’s research on self-theories, Fredrickson’s broaden-and-build theory, research on Winograd’s prospective memory, Jeannerod’s research on the perception-action link, Wilson’s research on brief attributional interventions, research on Brehm’s reactance theory, and Bargh’s research on priming. The article closes with some reflections on what these research findings imply for SF theory and practice.

This paper explores the impact of short immersive residentials at a radical institution for staff currently working in a mainstream one; in this instance, at Schumacher College for those at the nearby University of Plymouth (UK). Schumacher is an independent, alternative college offering residential courses in ‘transformative learning for sustainable living’. Using a qualitative research design, we explore the potential of a University staff Scholarship Scheme partnering with Schumacher to catalyse change towards sustainability in the university's curriculum and pedagogy. Our findings suggest that whilst many of the scholarships realised their anticipated potential to effect change, there was no simple correlation between the scholars' learning and experience at Schumacher and their subsequent personal and professional change. However, since the Plymouth–Schumacher route offers a promising pathway to bring innovation and fresh ideas into thinking and practice, the paper also explores how the mainstream and the radical could interact to better effect, drawing on wider thinking on the principles, challenges and tensions of pursuing sustainability, partnership, institutional learning and change.

The central issues here are the consequences and the impacts of the announcement of the resignation of Sir Terry Leahy, the CEO of Tesco, from the organisation in March 2011. The announcement on the 8th of June 2010 that Leahy, Tesco’s chief executive officer and one of Britain’s most respected businessmen, would be retiring after transforming the organisation into the world’s third biggest retailer, has generated a groundswell of reactions. The impact of this change, as well as how to manage the change resulting from his resignation is part of the concern of this report. Another concern of this investigation is to locate the leadership style of Terry Leahy in the overall achievements and organisational culture of Tesco since he became the global chain’s CEO in 1997. The complexity and unknown nature of the Brexit change events ask for a more people orientated form of change management, based on strong sponsorship and project planning while utilizing the available best practice knowledge and experience in the field of change management. This would decrease change resistance, increase speed of adoption, ultimate utilization and proficiency.

Brexit was and is no ordinary change situation, unique in that a country leaving the EU has never occurred before. Therefore there is no precedent that could serve as a guide to what is essentially a radically complex set of change projects (Draczkowska 2018) with their own extremely important milestones. We are only now over the first hurdle, the creation of a quite volatile exit deal if this indeed remains in place. (The Guardian 2020)

It’s difficult to know if one should write in the past or present due to the ongoing nature of Brexit.  For this reason this study will look at both the series of circumstances that have led to our present situation (Friedman 2016), and the preparations for one of the biggest milestones yet to come, the UK leaving the European Union. I won’t be examining the reasons for Brexit. But focus instead on how Brexit was managed as a change project, and if it had used known change management knowledge and tools, would there still be the mass split in UK peoples views of Brexit as a process and their feeling of trust when it comes to the government as their leaders? Even if Change management was implemented (Government of the United Kingdom 2014), was it effective enough? For the purposes of this case study, change management is understood as ‘The process, tools and techniques required to manage the people side of change in order to achieve a required outcome’ (Prosci).  I will be relating my observations to the PCT model from Prosci change management theory, as a way to gage the beginning risk factors and levels  of Brexit as a change project. Alongside this the Adkar change model provides a great tool for gaging the people side of change, asking if the government's current attitude and management style truly ignites Awareness and desire to in the very least, conform with the necessities of change put in place.

Considerable scholarly discussion has been given to the idea that we are moving toward a state of “posthumanism.” This essay examines some possible implications of a posthuman existence, specifically as it relates to that most basic of human needs—sexuality. I explore the spiritual aspects of sexuality to see what is lost and what is gained in technologically mediated forms of sexuality. To that end, I consider the interplay between sexual behavior and our conceptions of the sacred, how technologies are changing our views of—and realities concerning—our bodies, and the potential for a sacred posthuman sexuality.

Universities are making changes to fulfil their education, research and community service responsibilities. Exacerbated by limited experience of systemic change management approaches, most change initiatives fail to address institutional problems. Therefore, this study has tried to propose adaptive design as a promising approach to create adaptive changes in universities. Guided by a pragmatic philosophical viewpoint, this research followed a practice theory to understand actions and decisions related to changes. Staff members and students were invited to reflect on their perceptions of the principles and tactics extracted from adaptive design and their implementation in the university. Also, the study tried to identify major challenges to create adaptive changes by using a mixed method-sequential explanatory approach. Survey and interviews were made to gather relevant data. The finding reflected that tenets of adaptive design, its principles and tactics are important tools to lead and institutionalise change initiatives. This may affirm the significance of the approach if accepted and scaled up as an alternative change management theory.

Bollywood songs have experienced a considerable change in terms of lyrics over the past decades. Long ago, bollywood songs contained mostly Hindi words, but nowadays lyricists use lots of English words to express themselves. Till date, we are not aware of any systematic quantitative analysis of how it has changed and how the evolution took place over the years. In this paper, we analysed the evolution of bollywood songs’ lyrics over the past two decades. We study how the number of words and foreign words evolved over the past 20 years. The top 20 words used mostly while composing songs and the most occurring character are identified. Our dataset is composed of 300 bollywood lyrics. Based on the dataset, we show that the number of words and foreign words over the past two decades has been increasing. Our study reveals that the word “hai” (is) and the foreign word “baby” are the most widely used while writing the lyrics and the letter “a” has the highest frequency.

Bu çalışmada Adıyaman yöresinde yaşayan Alevilerin dini ve sosyal hayatının merkezinde yer alan dini otorite mekanizmasının işleyişi ve bu otoritenin süreç içerisinde uğradığı değişim/süreklilik ilişkisi incelenmiştir. Alevilerin inanç ve yaşayış bakımından dini önderlik pozisyonunda bulunan dedelik kurumu, bu kurumu temsilen bir dini otorite tipi olarak dedenin topluluk üzerindeki etkileri, denetleme ve uzlaştırma fonksiyonları temel bir problem olarak ele alınmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra, genel sosyal değişme bağlamında, topluluk üyeleri arasında özelliklede kentlerde yaşayan gençlerin dedelere karşı tutumları ve onları bir otorite olarak görüp görmedikleri tartışılmıştır.

Alevilik, yer yer İslam öncesi geleneksel Türk inanç ve pratikleriyle, İslamlaşma sonrası kazanılan İslami inanç, değer ve pratiklerin adeta bir sentezini sunmaktadır. Burada daha çok sözlü kültüre özgü dini anlatılar, efsaneler ve pratikler öne çıkmaktadır. Dedelik kurumu da bu inanç sisteminin merkezinde yer almaktadır. Dedelik kurumu, ocak kültü ve musahiplik gibi asli kuruluşlarla hem dedelerin rolünü ve etkinliğini meşrulaştıran hem de topluluk üzerinde otorite ve denetleme gücü kazandıran bir mekanizma olarak çalışmaktadır.

Toplumsal değişme sürecinde araştırma alanındaki dedelerin rolünde ve etkinliğinde bir farklılaşmanın olduğu görülmüştür. Kırsal alanlarda bu etkiler daha çok sosyal alanlarda uzlaştırıcı bir rol oynarken, kentlerde ve eğitim düzeyi yüksek kesimlerde dedelerin dini bir otorite olarak görülmesi geleneksel Alevi kimliği için sembolik bir değer taşımaktadır. Bunun yanında, araştırma alanına yansıyan şekliyle, özellikle genç kuşaklarda geleneksel alevi kültürüne ve ritüellerine bir eğilim görülmekle birlikte, dedelerin küresel çağda ‘kendilerini yenileyememiş’ olmalarına atfedilen bir otorite kaybından da söz edilebilir. Araştırmada nitel yöntem esas alınmış, veri toplama tekniklerinden katılımlı gözlem, derinlemesine görüşme ve literatür incelemesi kullanılmıştır.

In this study, the functioning of the religious authority mechanism at the center of the religious and social life of Alevis living in Adıyaman region and the relationship between this authority and change in the process are examined. As a representative figure of religious authority, Dedelik institution, which is in the position of religious leadership in terms of faith and living of Alevis, has been considered as an important problem in controlling and reconciling the effects of the dede on the society. In addition, in the context of general social change, it was discussed whether the members of the community, especially the young people living in cities, viewed their attitudes towards dede as an authority or not.

Alevism, with its traditional Turkish beliefs and practices before Islam, provides a synthesis of Islamic beliefs, values and practices gained after Islamization. Here, more religious narratives peculiar to the oral culture, legends and practices are prominent. The grandfather institution is located at the center of this belief system. Dedelik institution works as a mechanism that legitimizes the relativity and effectiveness of the grandfathers and gives authority and control over the community with the main institutions such as Ocak cult and brotherhood.

In the process of social change, it has been seen that there is a differentiation in the role and effectiveness of the grandparents in the research field. In rural areas, these influences play a conciliatory role in social areas, whereas in rural areas and in higheducated areas, seeing dede as a religious authority has a symbolic value for traditional Alevi’s identity. In addition, although there is a tendency for general alevi culture and rituals, especially in young generations, as reflected in the field of research, there is a loss of authority attributed to the dede that they have not renewed themselves in the global age. In the study, qualitative method is taken as the basis, participatory observation, in-depth interview and literature review is used.

This paper expands on recent debates over the merits of online crowdfunding platforms (CFPs) by looking at the extent to which these sorts of funding sites have the potential to contribute to the development of civic society ideals in Europe. In particular, it looks at how online CFPs and other peer-to-peer lending sites are beginning to alter the way in which charities and non-governmental organisations finance their activities. In addition, it also discusses how these sorts of investment platforms have the capacity to affect the way in which individual actors engage with one another at both the local and transnational level. Overall, then, what this paper shows is that, aside from their evident financial and economic benefits, CFPs also have the capacity to help foster and strengthen non-parliamentary democratic structures and practices. As such, they should be supported and encouraged as part of a framework of further European democratisation and civic integration.
