Classical Tradition in Modern Culture

La présente étude s’attache à l’analyse de la symbiose entre fascisme et catholicisme au sein de l’Istituto di Studi Romani (ISR). Il s’agira de montrer que l’ISR, suivant les exigences du régime et celles du Vatican, jouait un ‘double jeu’, politique et religieux. Ce double jeu est visible, non seulement à travers les activités et les contacts de l’ISR mais aussi dans les publications, c’est-à-dire dans le discours qui, bien que d’une certaine qualité scientifique, est de nature hautement propagandiste. Nous nous baserons sur les nombreuses publications de l’ISR, ainsi que sur des sources d’archives inédites, comprenant certains documents conservés à l’Istituto et dans les archives privées de la famille du fondateur, Carlo Galassi Paluzzi ; les contacts de ce dernier avec d’importantes personnalités politiques et, surtout, ecclésiastiques de l’entre-deux-guerres se révèleront particulièrement importants.

A chiedere agli artefici dotati d’ingegno e temprati «dallo esercizio dell’arte» di dare corpo per iscritto al loro sapere fu Benedetto Varchi che, nella primavera del 1547, in concomitanza con i suoi interventi accademici dedicati alle arti figurative, aveva promosso fra un gruppo di amici artisti l’inchiesta «del principato e della nobilità [...] della scultura e della pittura». Le loro risposte, e fra queste le lettere dei pittori Pontormo e Bronzino e altri, così come quelle ben note di Giorgio Vasari, in apertura, e di Michelangelo a coronamento conclusivo della «disputa», fecero da corredo all’edizione delle celebri “Due lezzioni” varchiane, edite nel 1550, appena un mese prima delle “Vite de’ più eccellenti architetti, pittori, et scultori italiani” dallo stesso «impressor ducale» Lorenzo Torrentino. Varchi fin dalla premessa generale pose la figura dell’artista al centro della complessa teorizzazione sulle “arti poietiche” (cioè «fattive») di Aristotele. Illustrando l’esser produttivo e, nel contempo, accompagnato dalla «certa e vera ragione» dell’”ars poietica”, il letterato mise in evidenza il fatto che questa si distinguesse dalla semplice tecnica, perché la sua capacità produttiva era possibile quando si verificava il possesso di una “techne”, ottenuta grazie all’esercizio, unitamente ai principi che regolavano una situazione in particolare (come, per esempio, fare la statua unica e originale). Il «proemio generale» e «l’introduzzione» alle tre arti poste da Giorgio Vasari in apertura delle “Vite” traevano l’ispirazione da questa solida esposizione varchiana. L’artista aretino coglieva bene il significato di riconoscimento riservato dal «philosopho» Varchi alle arti «fattive», mostrando per l’appunto nella sua opera il valore produttivo (ossia «fattivo») dell’operato degli artisti.

Si mettono a confronto il volgarizzamento della «Poetica» di Lodovico Castelvetro (Vienna, 1570) e i «Petri Victorii Commentarii in primum librum Arsitotelis De Arte Poetarum», un'opera di riferimento per chi traduceva o commentava il trattato aristotelico nella seconda metà del Cinquecento. Alla «Poetica vulgarizzata e sposta» del filologo modenese, inoltre, si affianca  «Il libro della Poetica tradotto di greco da Alessandro Piccolomini» (Siena, 1572), la prima traduzione eseguita dal senese, il quale di solito ricorreva ai compendi o alle parafrasi nella resa volgare dei trattati filosofici antichi. S'ipotizza, quindi, che la traduzione piccolominiana fosse pensata come una risposta critica e nel contempo costruttiva all'opera del Castelvetro.

The debate surrounding the relation between Hitler’s interest in architectural neo-classicism and his reception of antiquity has often proceeded from the assumption of a deep nostalgia for a (deeply mythicised) classical ‘Aryan’ past and an instinctive drive to use anti-modernist art for solely propagandistic ends. Whereas some have
attempted to invert this causal relationship, the present study situates Hitler’s artistic passion within his ‘biopolitical’ vision of the new Germany, cleansed of all that was deemed degenerate (entartet) and unassimilable within the national community (gemeinschaftsunfähig). Through an analysis of the Third Reich’s vast civic building programmes, which takes into account Hitler’s personal discourse on the ancient past, we will show how both elements, that is Hitler’s ‘modernised’ neo-classicism and his view on antiquity, can be seen as essentially complementary, and integral to his political programme. We will do so by firstly presenting an overview of the most typical examples of Hitler and Nazism’s use of an idiosyncratic version of neo-classically inspired civic architecture. After this we will focus on the Führer’s ‘artistic’ persona, both in the sense of his love for the arts, especially those referring to the formal language of antiquity, as in the sense of his biopolitical conception of Nazi life as a ‘work of art in progress’. Finally,
Hitler’s vision of artistic renaissance is located within a discourse of racial renewal which embraced the past and future within a this-worldly ‘eternity’.

The idea of a heritage from ancient Rome, or romanità, was central to Italian fascism. This article analyzes, in the 44 volumes of his Opera Omnia, Il Duce Mussolini’s discourse on romanità, focusing on key themes such as empire, historical characters and the grandeur of archaeological remains. It links Mussolini’s discourse of romanità to his discourse on the future, and to the idea of fascism as a political religion. It shows that Mussolini’s historical knowledge was largely overstated and that it was mainly the omnipresence of romanità, rather than its specific features, which can be defined as central to this notion.

A “giuntina” edition of «Perì hermenèias» (Florence, Biblioteca Riccardiana, Stamp. 15826), belonging to Benedetto Varchi (1503-1565) and by him richly annotated, testifies on his study on Logica. During his stay in Padua (1537-1541), while giving lectures on Philosophy at the «Studium» and taking part to the Accademia degli Infiammati, the Florentine scholar prepared the ground for building a vernacular philosophic prose by translating and commenting Aristotle's work. When he was called back to Florence in 1543 with the assignment of writing the «Storia fiorentina», Varchi persevered in his efforts to realize the project of putting the philosophic and scientific doctrine into vernacular, by giving lectures on Dante and Petrarch at the Accademia Fiorentina. Such project, moreover, matched with the aim of Duke Cosimo I to make Florentine language an efficient tool of his cultural policy. ***************************************************************************************
L’edizione giuntina del «Perì hermenèias» (Firenze, Biblioteca Riccardiana, Stamp. 15826), appartenuta a Benedetto Varchi e da lui fittamente postillata, è il testimone dei suoi studi sulla logica. Durante il soggiorno a Padova (1537-1541), fra le lezioni di filosofia nello Studio e l’attività all’Accademia degli Infiammati, il letterato fiorentino, traducendo e commentando l’opera di Aristotele, pose le basi alla costruzione di una prosa filosofica in volgare. Richiamato a Firenze nel 1543 per scrivere la Storia fiorentina, Varchi s’impegnò anche, con le letture dantesche e petrarchesche all’Accademia Fiorentina, a mettere in pratica il progetto di trasferire in volgare la dottrina filosofica e scientifica, un progetto che nei principi s’incontrava con l’aspirazione del duca Cosimo I a fare del fiorentino un mezzo efficace della sua politica culturale.

Las obras de los historiadores de Indias constituyen un vasto corpus de textos de variadas formas literarias. Concluimos afirmando que la función primordial del uso del mito en estos autores, obviando su base erudita, es la comparativa; que el mito es una fábula inferior si se compara con la verdad vista por el historiador, y que las fuentes utilizadas son los autores clásicos, manejados, en el caso de los griegos, en traducciones latinas, y los manuales mitológicos al uso en la época.

The works of the historians of the Indies constitute a vast corpus of texts of various literary forms. This study concludes affirming that the basic function of the use of the classical myth in these authors, obviating its erudite base, is the comparative one; that the myth is a lower fable if compared with the truth seen by the historian, and that the used sources are the classic authors, handled, in the case of the Greeks, in Latin translations, and the mythological manuals in use at the time.

Nel saggio si analizzano alcuni passi delle «Lectiones» e dei «Commentari»  vettoriani al trattato di retorica di Demetrio (pseudo-) Falereo, in cui il filologo fiorentino commenta la lingua, le metafore e le fonti della «Commedia»; anche per difendere l'opera dantesca dalle critiche rivolte alla lingua del poema da Giovanni della Casa nel «Galateo».

In virtù dell'analisi dei testi linguistici di Benedetto Varchi, rimasti manoscritti fino all'Otto e al Novecento, si individuano le tappe in cui, in concomitanza con gli studi di testi aristotelici (la logica al primo posto), nell'autore dell'«Ercolano» prendevano corpo una solida definizione della natura del linguaggio e la determinazione delle strutture di una lingua. Applicata alla situazione linguistica coeva, l’analisi scaturita dallo studio delle lingue e dei testi classici ha portato Varchi a riflettere sulla complessità della lingua volgare e dei suoi registri, nonché a reinterpretare le teorie di Pietro Bembo.
Il punto di svolta nella formazione del pensiero linguistico varchiano è rappresentato dagli studi filosofici all’Università di Padova (1537-1541) e dalla riflessione sulla «Poetica», sulla poesia e sui generi letterari all’interno dell’Accademia degli Infiammati (1540-41). Cruciale (si sottolinea) è stato il momento degli interventi nel cenacolo patavino di Lombardi e di Maggi che leggevano la «Poetica». Il pensiero linguistico di Varchi che aveva preso avvio dal passo del «De interpretatione» di Aristotele (16a 3-4) si consolidava in forza della lettura del capitolo linguistico della «Poetica», commentato da Vincenzo Maggi, il quale nell’"explanatio" del brano aveva accentuato il criterio scrupolosamente grammaticale dell’esame condotto dal filosofo greco. Negli scritti di Varchi, che risalgono a quel periodo, molto prima dell'«Ercolano» (grammatiche del latino e del toscano, nonché gli abbozzi di un nuovo alfabeto per il volgare), si osserva una coerenza teorica nel porre in rilievo il fatto che le lingue sono prima di tutto parlate e l’uso corretto della lingua volgare si fonda sulla capacità di ben parlare. Da questo presupposto il Varchi muove nella sua teorrizzazione sul linguaggio, sul volgare letterario e sulla lingua d’uso.

Analysis of many passages of his writings reveals Alberti’s appreciation of country life as an environment where gain is morally acceptable, an ideal locus for the pursuit of letters, and a safe haven away from the risks and hazards of city life. Nevertheless, Alberti’s depiction of the contrast between countryside and city is not the expression of this humanist’s definitive repudiation of civil commitment but rather of his commendation of the Roman positive representation of country life.

Nelle indagini di storia della lingua italiana del Cinquecento si osserva che lo storico processo del lento ma deciso affermarsi di un modello linguistico unitario s’intreccia con il volgarizzamento e la riscrittura della letteratura antica di ogni ramo dello scibile. Questo ‘acclimatamento’ in volgare delle materie, che vanno dalla filosofia naturale a quella morale, dalla poetica alla musica, dalla matematica alle arti meccaniche, avviene non soltanto grazie alla traduzione diretta delle opere greche e latine, ma soprattutto in virtù di un innesto del pensiero filosofico, come di quello scientifico-tecnico, nelle nuove teorie espresse nella trattatistica cinquecentesca. E se nel Duecento il volgare della prosa d’arte traeva modelli di un’elegante finitura formale e retorica dagli esempi mediolatini e classici, l'italiano della scrittura argomentativa nel secolo sedicesimo ricerca e sperimenta forme testuali e moduli linguistici che possano restituire appieno i concetti, «il vero delle cose», delle «auctoritates» in ogni disciplina, di Aristotele «in primis».
In questo intervento mi propongo di illustrare alcune delle questioni scaturite dalle ricerche dedicate alla nuova prosa e alla formazione del lessico sia scientifico (in particolare, della logica) sia tecnico (musicale, drammaturgico), così come al ruolo della cultura accademica nel volgarizzamento del sapere nel Cinquecento.

Sodobni slovenski avtor Niko Grafenauer (1940) je priznan pesnik in pisatelj, ki je skoraj sočasno začel objavljati poezijo za odrasle (Večer pred praznikom, 1962) in za mlade bralce (Pedenjped, 1966). Slednja je predmet pričujoče razprave. Iz njegove obsežne bibliografije je razvidno,  da se je s področjem mladinske književnosti ukvarjal avtorsko, uredniško
in prevajalsko. Mladinska knji`evnost je del literarnega sistema in je eden izmed družbenih sistemov (družba, kultura, jezik in literatura). Niko Grafenauer je vsebinsko in formalno pomemben člen tega literarnega sistema, saj je slovensko mladinsko književnost soustvarjal med letoma
1950 in 1980 ter nato zasluženo postal sodobni mladinski klasik. Njegova dela so uvrščena v učne načrte za slovenščino, v antologije mladinske književnosti, v berilih je zastopan s pesniškim in/ali proznim opusom.  Grafenauer sodi v generacijo pesnikov, rojenih v štiridesetih letih 20.    stoletja, ki so po drugi svetovni vojni tvorili infrastrukturo slovenske mladinske književnosti, predvsem v krogu Založbe Mladinska knjiga (npr. Kristina Brenk, Kajetan Kovič, Tone Pavček, Lojze Kovačič, Svetlana Makarovič idr.), revije Ciciban (1945), Pionirskega lista (1948), knjižnih  zbirk (Čebelica, 1953, idr.).

Dans cet article, nous nous proposons de présenter l’état des recherches concernant la romanité fasciste dans toutes ses manifestations reconnues jusqu’à présent. Ainsi, nous parlerons d’abord des études ‘générales,’ qui depuis la fin des années 1970 ont commencé à découvrir le sujet. Ces études analysent généralement la nature et la valeur propagandiste de la romanité (la création d’une identité nationale). En deuxième lieu seront présentées les études qui encadrent la romanité dans l’Italie préfasciste, c’est-à-dire dans l’Italie risorgimentale de l’unification. Ces études apportent un contrepoids aux visions que l’on pourrait qualifier d’‘unicistes’ (qui partent de l’unicité du fascisme et de la romanité fasciste), car elles placent la romanité dans une évolution à un certain degré naturelle, soulignant la continuité avec le passé proche. Ensuite, nous traiterons des études concernant la discipline des classiques sous le fascisme, dédiant particulièrement notre attention à la façon dont trois personnages, qui sous le régime fasciste fêtèrent leur anniversaire bimillénaire (Virgile, Horace et Auguste), furent relevés et insérés dans un discours fortement influencé par des besoins idéologiques. Puis nous regarderons les institutions principales qui ont contribué à la divulgation de la propagande de la romanité, surtout l’Istituto di Studi Romani. Après un survol des recherches en archéologie et de la façon dont cette dernière fut soumise à la volonté spectaculaire du régime fasciste, nous parlerons brièvement de la présence de la romanité dans le cinéma pendant le ventennio fasciste (la période d’environ 20 ans durant laquelle le fascisme fut au pouvoir en Italie). Pour finir, nous consacrerons alors la dernière partie de notre étude aux possibles pôles de recherche future: nous indiquerons certains aspects qui nécessitent un approfondissement et certains qui n’ont jamais été traités, ainsi que quelques nouvelles méthodes, points de vue et disciplines qui pourraient contribuer à une meilleure connaissance du phénomène.

Il volume raccoglie le osservazioni sul lessico tecnico della musica e del teatro del Cinquecento, attestato dalle traduzioni manoscritte di alcuni trattati greci: «Onomasticon» di Polluce, i «Problemi musicali» («Probl. XIX»), attribuiti ad Aristotele e altri testi più brevi. Le traduzioni, eseguite dal fonetista fiorentino Giorgio Bartoli (1534-1583), forniscono materiali per l'allestimento di un glossario ragionato che costituisce il nucleo centrale del volume.

This paper covers some aspects in the art of Antony Gormley, contemporary British Sculptor — in particular, his stance toward the classical sculptural tradition, modes of representation of the human body, the notion of space in sculpture, and communication between Gormley's works and the spectator. /// Статья посвящена некоторым аспектам творчества современного британского скульптора Энтони Гормли — в частности, его связям с классической скульптурной традицией, способам репрезентации человеческого тела, категории пространства в скульптуре и коммуникации произведений Гормли со зрителем.

The article gives the most important examples of classicism in the culture of Saratov province namely in architecture and education. The author focuses his attention on the activities of Ivan F. Sinaisky (1799–1870) as a teacher in Greek both in Gymnasium and in Orthodox Theological Seminary in Saratov. Works translated by I. Sinaisky from Greek, his manuals and dictionaries for those who learned Greek, as well as his articles on Greek and Greek authors are being considered in the context of Russian and European classicism.

In this paper tango lyrics are analyzed from the perspective of the classical models dealing with love and violence. The study focuses on the presence of the literary topics Odi et amo and Nec tecum nec sine te in the work of renowned songwriters from Río de la Plata such as Enrique Santos Discépolo, Luis César Amadori, Homero Expósito, Enrique Cadícamo or Cátulo Castillo. The methodological approach derives from comparative literature in order to establish parallels between the poetization of the so called "hatelove" in the classical world
and in tango. The examples given allow us to conclude that the classical tradition underlies tango literature when depicting the situations in which love and violence concur.

The present paper treats a particular manifestation of contemporary myth-making, the myth of ‘Romanness’ known as romanità, which since the end of antiquity has often been viewed as a cornerstone of Italian identity; at times this myth has taken on particular importance, for example during the Renaissance period, and also under fascism. In the years between 1922 to 1943, this myth was utilised as a means of portraying contemporary Italy, centred around Rome as the capital, as a direct and privileged heir of Late Republican and Early Imperial antiquity, a period in which such ‘Roman’ qualities as combativeness, greatness and determination were exemplified. In this instance, romanità, in a very real sense, acted as a full-blown ‘myth of origin’. Whereas in general, the myth of Rome has been the subject of extensive and expertly-wrought analyses, in the case of the Italian fascist reception of Roman antiquity, there are various facets of the way in which romanità affected Italian society during the ventennio fascista - the twenty years during which fascism was in power, from 1922 until 1943 - that still await exploration. In this context, clarification is still lacking regarding the overall significance of the myth within a society which was not only steeped in a traditional religious, Catholic heritage, but was also being confronted with a regime that steadily and increasingly nurtured its own sacral outlook and tendencies, eventually developing into a fully-fledged ‘political religion’. In light of the above observations, this paper analyses the way in which the myth of Rome, omnipresent in fascist culture and even more so within its propaganda, came to be reflected in Italian Catholic opinion. We will engage in a close reading of the widely distributed Catholic newspaper L’Avvenire d’Italia, focusing particularly on the 1930s, a period where the fascist regime enjoyed a heightened popular consensus. In the following section, we start with a brief discussion of the concept of political religion within the context of Italian fascism, followed by a more generalised discussion of romanità in its many manifestations; the paper ends with an analysis of the latter phenomenon’s presence in the pages of L’Avvenire d’Italia.

This essay was privately printed as one of a series of discussions for use in an undergraduate course in classics and cinema. The primary course objective was to introduce students to the standard elements of narrative construction and to the interpretation of literary narratives (ancient and modern) by exploring the adaptation of ancient Greek themes and narrative structures in modern cinema.       Sommersby (1993), a film by British-born director Jon Amiel, is in its general story line a remake of a 1982 French film The Return of Martin Guerre, which recounted a 16th century French legal case of identity theft. Amiel’s version, however, reimagines the story in the post-Civil-War American South and in terms of themes and narrative patterns of Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad, Aeschylus’ Oresteia, and the New Testament. It is an example of a particularly complex use of themes and narrative patterns of ancient Greek literature to create a foundation myth for contemporary American society. It illustrates the literary device of intertextuality on multiple levels and also literary reception theory, in that it shows how profoundly knowledge of classical literature affects the viewer’s understanding of the film—a phenomenon illustrated by the many reviewers who missed the classical roots of the story line in the film.

This study examines philosophical questions regarding the limitations of formalism and how they might be overcome. It presents a critical reconstruction of the early work of Georg Lukács, which attempted to supplement a unique form of aesthetic cultural critique with a Dostoyevskian-styled ethical utopia. Demonstrating the unity and the aporias of this two-track approach, it sheds new light on Lukács’s Marxist turn at the end of 1918.

Die Studie greift die klassischen Fragen nach den Grenzen und nach der möglichen Überwindung des Formalismus in der Kultur-, Sozial- und Geschichtsphilosophie auf. Sie bietet eine kritische Rekonstruktion des neukantianischen Frühwerks Lukács’, in dem eine eigenartige ästhetizistische Kulturkritik durch eine metaphysisch-ethische Utopie ergänzt werden sollte. Es werden die gemeinsamen neukantianischen Grundlagen der zwei wichtigsten Texte erhellt, die Lukács zwischen 1912 und 1918 verfasste: seiner ersten großen Ästhetik und der Theorie des Romans, die meistens als eine hegelianische Geschichtsphilosophie missverstanden wird. Die überzeitliche „Tragödie“ der Kunst und der Kultur überhaupt, auf die in der Ästhetik hingewiesen wird, zeigt die Beschränktheit des Formalismus. Ohne noch den neukantianischen Rahmen zu sprengen, ebnet die Theorie des Romans den Weg zu einer über den Formalismus hinausgehenden ethischen Utopie, welche Lukács in einem geplanten aber nicht geschriebenen Buch über Dostojewski behandeln wollte. Das Aufzeigen der Einheit als auch der Aporien dieses zweigleisigen Ansatzes wirft neues Licht auf die theoretischen und utopischen Motive des Lukácsschen Frühwerks und auf das kritische Potential seiner marxistischen Wende Ende 1918.

Brill’s Companion to the Reception of Homer from the Hellenistic Age to Late Antiquity presents a comprehensive account of the afterlife of the Homeric corpus. Twenty chapters written by a range of experts in the field show how Homeric poems were transmitted, disseminated, adopted, analysed, admired or even criticized across diverse intellectual environments, from the 3rd century BCE to the 6th century CE. The volume explores the impact of Homer on Hellenistic prose and poetry, the Second Sophistic, the Stoics, some Christian writers and the major Neoplatonists, showing how the Greek paideia continued to flourish in new contexts.
