JOSIP JEDLOWSKI: A BIOGRAPHY
(INCLUDING NOTES ON A TRANSNATIONAL HISTORY OF A
MIDDLE-CLASS FAMILY)
The author uses archival sources, contemporary press, relevant literature
and correspondence to present life and times of Josip Jedlowski (1884-
1966), attorney at law, Croatian politician and publicist. Although he has
never played a major role in political events of the first half of 20th Century,
Jedlowski did manage to take several independent moves, which together
with his writings constitute valuable basis for an analysis of his changing
opinions, especially concerning personal integrity, motivation and attitudes
on socio-political framework. Born in Kotor/Cattaro to a father of Polish origin, he
studied law in Zagreb and Prague, associating himself to the idea of South
Slav unity, which he - through newspapers and local Slovene and Croatian
organizations - continued to advocate during his years in Trieste. As a result,
he had been imprisoned shortly after the outbreak of World War One, but
soon managed to leave for Italy, where he joined the group of South Slav
politicians, lately to be known as the Yugoslav Committee. Although acting
mostly as a personal secretary to Ante Trumbić - i.e. not as a decision-maker
- he had a degree of influence not only on public releases and technical issues,
but also on accepting new members. Moreover, after meeting Serbian
prime-minister Nikola Pašić in mid-1916 (on the occasion The Southern
Slav Bulletin stated that Jedlowski was “representing more particularly the
interests of the Croats and Slovenes in Istria” and that “Pašić [had] most
cordially promised that Serbia will never abandon the aims of Istria”), he
and Hinko Hinković issued - on behalf of the Committee - an unauthorised
manifesto calling all Croats, Serbs and Slovenes abroad to report directly
for military service in the Serbian army. In ensuing turmoil Jedlowski -
unlike Hinković - resigned on his post in the Committee but continued to
be on its payrole, lobbying, publishing and reporting from London as long
as late 1919 (his greatest concern was Italian territorial grasping). Returning
to Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, he found himself disillusioned
about the nature of new state and its political parties. Although he didn’t
support Croatian Peasant Party, in 1920s Jedlowski wrote a private letters
to minister Šurmin, protesting against maltreatment of Croat population.
Apart from few cultural notes on his birthplace, he generaly avoided public
activity, working as a lawyer in Zagreb and even representing Italian shipowner
in a delicate case of “Principessa Mafalda”. Data on his views in 1930s
are scarce: at least in the beginning, he believed that King Alexander’s dictature
will suppress Greater Serbian demands; also, according to unreliable
sources, few years later he was connected to pro-German “Croatian national-
socialists”. However, last years of his life Jedlowski spent uneventfully in
Prčanj near Kotor. Interestingly, in his youth one of his brothers moved to
Zadar, consequently founding the Italian branch of the family. As a result,
two nephews later fought on the opposite sides: one in the Italian Army,
other in Yugoslav partisans.

Iako se javnosti ne govori mnogo o fenomenu turbofolka u Hrvatskoj, po vlastitom prilično nedavnom srednjoškolskom i aktualnom studentskom iskustvu čini mi se da je pojava mladenačke turbofolk i narodnjačke subkulture fenomen zaista značajnih razmjera. Baker u svom tekstu prenosi podatak da čak 43% mladih redovito sluša glazbu koja se može nazvati turbofolkom.  O turbofolku, ako se i govori, u javnosti se govori s prezirom, hrvatski izvođači koji bi se po obilježjima svoje produkcije mogli uklopiti u taj tip glazbenog izričaja svim se silama bore protiv te etikete, a društveno-politička klima koja vlada hrvatskim društvom po pitanju odnosa sa Srbijom primamljiv je i pikantan začin ove teme.
Veliku većinu pjesama izvode ženske izvođačice uz vrlo prepoznatljivi stil popratne vizualne reprezentacije. Tekstovi uglavnom tematiziraju ženske pozicije u krahovima romantičnih odnosa  - te su pozicije uglavnom nezavidne. Sve ovdje navedeno čini savršene polazišne točke za pisanje rada koji će spojiti područje feminizma i popularne kulture.

""Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review the cancellation of Australia's National Soccer League (NSL) competition and its replacement in 2004 with the corporatist A-League which is based on the North American model of “one team one city”, no promotion and relegation, and private-equity clubs. The authors believe that one of the aims of the A-League and its “ground-zero” ideology was to institute exclusion of the ethnic clubs that had formed the backbone of the NSL for 30 years.

Design/methodology/approach – Extensive literature search, participant-observation, one personal interview and two group interviews were employed. People interviewed were the President of the Croatian community's Melbourne Knights Football Club, the Club Secretary of Melbourne Knights, and three leaders of Melbourne Knights’ MCF hooligan firm.

Findings – The authors observe the Football Federation Australia hiding behind the perceived scientific nature and technical veracity of budgeted accounting numbers to set the financial bar too high for the ethnic clubs to find a place in the brave new world that has been called “Modern Football”. However, capitalism creates its own discontents. Online forums and homemade fence banners are the new vehicles for dissent for the supporters of “Old Soccer”.

Originality/value – There is still only a small academic literature on Australian football and most of this has been written by humanities lecturers. The paper offers a business school perspective.

This monograph, 'A linguistic landscape of Rijeka', provides a visual account of Rijeka through public signage. The preliminary sections of the book provide a theoretical and methodological appraisal of the current research literature on linguistic landscapes, both internationally as well as domestically in Croatia. The central sections of the book are structured in a way that is popular-scientific and in these sections there is a rich and wide variety of visual material accompanied by comments. Through an examination of public signage, the identity of a city itself is also examined.

Knjiga Riječki jezični krajolik donosi urbanu sliku Rijeke kroz javne natpise. Uvodni su dijelovi teorijski i metodološki te donose pregled literature o jezičnome krajoliku u svijetu i u Hrvatskoj. Središnji su dijelovi strukturirani kao znanstveno-popularni, donose bogatu slikovnu dokumentaciju s popratnim komentarima. Kroz istraživanja javnih natpisa istražuje se identitet grada.

Specific characteristic of the Croatian medieval culture is the fact that cultural heritage is preserved in three languages (Croatian, Latin and Old Church Slavonic), and that these languages were written in three different alphabets (Latin alphabet, Glagolitic letters and Croatian Cyrillic script). All these languages and scriptures today can be seen in various epigraphic inscriptions, as well as in diplomatic and narrative sources. It is important to stress that the most of these extant sources are more or less directly related with the Benedictine Order, who is the eldest monastic order within the Catholic Church. During the Middle Ages Benedictines, with their abbeys and monasteries, played a key role regarding the development of European literacy and Christianization of Europe. They had the same role in medieval Croatia, where they brought Latin alphabet but they also helped in the spread of Glagolitic scripture and Croatian Cyrillic alphabet. Their most important monasteries in Croatia were in Rižinice (near Solin), St. Chrysogonus and St. Mary in Zadar, St. John Evangelist in Biograd (later Ss. Cosmas and Damian on the island of Pašman), St. Peter in Selo (in Primorska/Donja Poljica), male and female convents in Split, abbey of St. Lucy on the island of Krk and abbey of St. John the Baptist in Povlja on the island of Brač. All these monasteries were deeply involved in all the processes of development of Croatian literal and verbal culture, and monks of Benedictine order in Croatia wrote in all three alphabets. One has to emphasize that such involvement in the Croatian trilingual culture was not characteristic to any other later monastic order.

This is the second part of a study dedicated to an intertextual dialogue between Byron and Krleža, based on a comparative reading of the second generation British Romantic and the Croatian Modernist. The introduction offers a short review of Byron’s sources on the Balkans, including the travel diaries of his best friend John Cam Hobhouse, Lord Broughton, whose Croatian sojourn at the time Byron was composing his Oriental Tales has been overlooked within Byron studies as well as in the studies of British-Croatian liaison. Having sourced the link between Byron and Krleža in the love of the Morlachian (quia Croatian) lore, I move to an in-depth analysis of Krleža’s textual strategies in his autobiographical story Pijana novembarska noć 1918., showing how Krleža had taken a cue from the cunningly confessional narrative voices in Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage to forge a unique and superbly ironic form of closet play. I also introduce a free-verse Croatian translation of the four stanzas from the First Canto of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage cancelled from the canonical version of the poem and published only after Byron’s death.

Chapter abstract:
F. O. Mathiessen's understudied memoir-cum-travelogue _From the Heart of Europe_ (1948) is taken as a symptomatic text for the institution of Cold-War American Studies, and illustrative of the tensions in the discipline throughout its evolution. Simultaneously, Mathiessen's contemporary C. L. R. James, a prolific Caribbean writer and intellectual, sets up in his underappreciated study of Herman Melville's _Moby-Dick_ by the title _Mariners, Renegades and Castaways_ (1953) an alternative version of American Studies that already points to the discipline's transnational context and habitus, which would be revitalized in more recent disciplinary practices. The renewed interest for less well known and more obscure texts of both scholars points to the specific sense of the past permeating the humanities discipline of American Studies.

The 38 Croatian, Slovenian and Czech constitutional documents reflect the development of the modern national movements of these Middle and South East European Slavic people and their political and cultural efforts to emancipate themselves from the Habsburg monarchy around 1848. Here the two imperial 'Cabinet Letters for Bohemia' are of particular importance for the Czech middle classes. For Croatia, the 'Petitions of Rights of the National Movement of the Triune Kingdom of Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia', and for Slovenia, the "Programme of United Slovenia" are of preeminent significance."

Radi se o višjezičnom kritičkom izdanju najvažnijih dokumenata iz triju zemalja na izvornim jezicima, uz višejezične opće uvode te komentare pojedinih dokumenata i preglednom bibliografijom.
Dalibor Čepulo je, uz pomoć Dunje Pastović i Mirele Krešić, uredio hrvatske dokumente (na hrvatskom i njemačkom jeziku) dok je Mirela Krešić, jedna od suradnica u projektu, uredila slovenske dokumente."

The kumpanjija, or chain sword dance, of Blato, Croatia, is also danced each April in Sydney, Australia. This paper explores the perpetuation of the kumpanjija in Sydney since 1965, culminating in the fiftieth anniversary performance in 2015. Based on data from ethnographic fieldwork, the paper provides an ethnochoreological analysis of this event and illustrates how the performance fosters experiences of bonding, embodies nostalgic sentiment and provides community focus. The relationship between the dance as performed currently in Blato, and the performance troupe in Sydney is also explored. This event demonstrates the significance of the annual event for this section of the Croatian immigrant community in Sydney.

Albert Bazala’s book Psihologija u hrvatskom umjetnom pjesništvu (Psychology in Croatian Artistic Poetry) illustrates how during the early 20 century a tendency to use various disciplines in an integrated way in the teaching process was present in the Croatian educational system. This work, intended for students, is a pioneering venture in the field of psychological literature, which in its content combines poetry and psychology as a scientific discipline. Furthermore, an attempt will be made to delineate how poetry and psychology are interrelated through Bazala’s interpretation of delusions and projections. Bazala’s interpretation of delusions, projections, illusions and hallucinations is exemplified in the poems of Ante Tresić Pavičić, Jovan Hranilović, Luka Botić, Franjo Marković and Gjuro Arnold. It is nearly impossible not to notice the strong influence of Gjuro Arnold and his textbook Psihologija za srednja učilišta (Psychology for Secondary Schools) in Bazala’s work.
