Στον δεύτερο τόμο της σειράς Αρχαιολογία εξετάζεται η Εύβοια και η Στερεά Ελλάδα, η ευρεία γεωγραφική ζώνη που εκτείνεται από τις δυτικές ακτές του Αιγαίου έως τα παράλια του Ιονίου Πελάγους. Στην ιστορική και αρχαιολογική αυτή περιήγηση η Εύβοια και ο νότιος ελλαδικός κορμός –Αττική, Βοιωτία, Φθιώτιδα, Ευρυτανία, Φωκίδα, Αιτωλία και Ακαρνανία– παρουσιάζονται από την προϊστορική περίοδο έως το τέλος του αρχαίου κόσμου. Τριάντα πέντε έλληνες και ξένοι αρχαιολόγοι αναλαμβάνουν το ταξίδι του αναγνώστη στην ιστορία και τα μνημεία, δίνοντας επιστημονική πληροφορία για κάθε περιοχή. Στο βιβλίο συνυπάρχουν σημεία αναφοράς του αρχαίου κόσμου με περιοχές και μνημεία που μόλις πρόσφατα άρχισαν να συγκεντρώνουν το αρχαιολογικό ενδιαφέρον. The second volume in the Archaeology series examines Euboea and Central Greece, the wide geographical region spreading from the western shores of the Aegean to the coasts of the Ionian Sea. In this historical and archaeological journey, Euboea and the southern part of mainland Greece—Attica, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Eurytania, Phokis, Aetolia and Akarnania—are presented from the prehistoric era to the end of the ancient world. Thirty-five Greek and foreign archaeologists introduce the reader to the history and the monuments, with concise authoritative texts for each area.

Figurines féminines d’Eubée (Grèce) de l’époque classique et hellénistique. Usages votifs et funéraires
Les figurines recueillies depuis le xixe s. sur les principaux sites d’Eubée, Chalcis, Érétrie, Histiaia-Oreos et Karystos, sont examinées ici en fonction de leur context de trouvaille. De nombreuses figurines féminines des ve et ive s. av. J.-C., dont les
types iconographiques apparaissent parfois sur plusieurs sites, comme les protomés, les courotrophes, les figures juvéniles debout ou assises et les acteurs comiques dans des rôles féminins, ont été trouvées aussi bien dans des tombes que dans des sanctuaires d’Eubée : elles prouvent que les mêmes ateliers répondaient aux différents besoins du marché, en vue d’une destination funéraire aussi bien que votive. Certaines figurines élaborées ont peut-être fait l’objet de commandes spéciales : elles manifestaient le statut de l’élite locale à la fois dans des contextes sacrés et profanes.

Female figurines of Classical and Hellenistic times from Euboea. An exploration of their votive and funerary uses. 
This study examines the figurines collected since the 19th century from the main sites of Euboea – Chalkis, Eretria, Histiaia-Oreos, and Karystos – within the context of their archaeological findspots. In the 5th-4th c. BC, certain types of female figurines
attested at multiple sites – including protomai, kourotrophoi, standing and seated juvenile figures, and comic actors in female roles – appear both in graves and sanctuaries in Euboea. Such finds prove that the same workshops catered to a range of
different consumer needs, producing objects that could be funerary as well as votive in function. Some elaborate figurines may represent special orders, demonstrating the status of local elite groups in both sacred and profane contexts.

Με τον οδηγό αυτό πραγματοποιείται ένα ταξίδι στα άδυτα και τις ομορφιές του Δήμου Δiρφύων Μεσσαπίων της Κεντρικής Εύβοιας. Από τον τίτλο του βιβλίου, διαπιστώνει ο αναγνώστης ότι πρόκειται για έναν οδηγό με τουριστικό, ιστορικό και ενημερωτικό χαρακτήρα. Στόχος είναι να γνωρίσουν τον τόπο μας και την ιστορία του όλοι οι φυσιολάτρεις και σε όσους αρέσουν οι προκλήσεις και οι άγνωστες εξορμήσεις ταξιδεύοντας από τον βόρειο Ευβοϊκό κόλπο με τις ιδιόμορφες παραλίες έως τις ανατολικές ακτές του νησιού στο Αιγαίο πέλαγος με τα κρυστάλλινα νερά, από τις πεδιάδες και τους αγέρωχους και στιβαρούς ορεινούς όγκους, την εναλλαγή υδάτινου και ορεινού στοιχείου και τις παραδίρφυες περιοχές. Μερικές από τις ενότητες είναι: ιστορικά στοιχεία κάθε τοπικής κοινότητας, σημεία ενδιαφέροντος, θρησκευτικός τουρισμός,  εναλλακτικός τουρισμός, παραλίες, σπήλαια, λαογραφικά στοιχεία, ήθη και έθιμα, γευσιγνωσία.  Είναι μία πολύμηνη και επίπονη διεργασία που εκπονήθηκε με αμιγές συνεργατικό πνεύμα και αγάπη μιας επιστημονικής ομάδας με συγγραφείς τους: Καρατζά Νικόλαο (αρχαιολόγος, επιμέλεια-οργάνωση έκδοσης), Μαντζώρου Ιωάννα (φιλόλογος), Τσίρη Ανέστη (αρχαιολόγος) και Καραγκούνη Νίκη (κοινωνική ανθρωπολόγος).

Plants, animals and mythical creatures from the Euboean ceramic corpus.
An overview of old and new finds.

    A number of Attic and Euboean black-figure vases of the late Archaic and early Classical periods from the island of Euboea, housed in the National Archaeological Museum, as well as in other Museums, are decorated with plants, animals and mythical creatures. New, Attic and Euboean, black-figure finds from the sanctuaries and ancient cemeteries of Euboea have been added to this number, as well as instances of archaic to early classical examples of Euboean relief pithoi decorated with plants and animals.
    In this paper an attempt is made to briefly present some of the main types and categories of animal and plant decoration known in Euboean pottery of the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. and to explore the role these representations played, as generic images or symbolic keys, in the civic or rural life and religious beliefs of the ancient population of this island. The role of mythical creatures, such as sphinxes and sirens depicted on burial vases, is also briefly outlined and a few new finds of the archaic period are presented.
    The paper includes mention of literary sources related to the subject, through the study of which a reconnaissance of some aspects of the ancient resource-landscape, as well as of some standard status-symbol motifs promulgated in long periods by the social and political elites of the main Euboean cities, such as Eretria, Chalkis and Karystos, is attempted.

Using a new chronostratigraphic sequence for Eretria’s Hellenistic Pottery, this chapter revisits the four main destructions sustained by the city in the Hellenistic period and its phases or recovery.

Ο ναός του Ταξιάρχη βρίσκεται στον νεώτερο οικισμό Καλύβια, στον ορεινό όγκο πάνω από την πόλη της Καρύστου και χρονολογείται, σύμφωνα με νεώτερη άποψη του Χ. Μπούρα (2002), στα 1200. Πρόκειται για σύνθετο τετρακιόνιο ναό με τρούλλο και σταυρεπίστεγο νάρθηκα. Έχει αναλογίες σχεδόν τετραγώνου στην κάτοψη του κυρίως ναού και ισοδύναμα τα γωνιακά διαμερίσματα, τα οποία καλύπτονται με σταυροθόλια με νευρώσεις. Το τριμερές ιερό του καλύπτεται στο μεν κεντρικό τμήμα του από την προέκταση της ανατολικής κεραίας του σταυρού, στο δε διακονικό και την πρόθεση με ημικυλινδρικούς θόλους, παράλληλους προς τον κεντρικό. Δεν έχει μεταγενέστερες φάσεις, εκτός από την προσθήκη κεραμοσκέπαστου μονόχωρου παρεκκλησίου-του Αγίου Ιωάννη – στη νότια πλευρά του. Παρά την ακαλαίσθητη μορφή του, στο παρεκκλήσιο σώζονται σπαράγματα τοιχογραφιών στην καμάρα του που μαρτυρούν πως πρόκειται για κτίσμα των βυζαντινών χρόνων. Οι τοιχοποιίες του είναι επιμελώς δομημένες από λαξευμένο πωρόλιθο και πλίνθους κατά το πλινθοπερίκλειστο σύστημα και εδράζονται σε ελαφρώς προεξέχουσα κρηπίδα, ενώ επιστέφονται από λοξότμητο πώρινο βυζαντινό κυμάτιο, κάτω από τη στέγαση. Χαρακτηριστική είναι η μορφή του «αθηναϊκού τύπου» τρούλλου, από λαξευμένους πωρόλιθους επίσης, στον οποίο ανοίγονται οκτώ επιμήκη τοξωτά ανοίγματα. Το άνω τμήμα τους διαμορφώνεται από δυο προεξέχοντα επάλληλα τόξα και επιστέφεται από λοξότμητο κυμάτιο. Ίδιας διατομής κυμάτιο διαμορφώνεται, εν είδει γείσου, στις γενέσεις των τόξων αυτών. Σε κάθε ακμή του οκταγώνου, υπάρχει πώρινος λαξευτός κιονίσκος.
Τα σημαντικότερα οικοδομικά και αισθητικά προβλήματα του ναού είναι τα εξής:
Η άστοχη αντικατάσταση των στεγών του με νεώτερες πλάκες σκυροδέματος, που εκτός των άλλων αλλοίωσαν και την σταυρεπίστεγη διάταξη της ανωδομής του νάρθηκα
Η απογύμνωση του τρούλλου και η επικάλυψή του με τσιμεντοκονίαμα, καθώς και η προσθήκη ημιοκταγωνικού ενισχυτικού δακτυλίου από οπλισμένο σκυρόδεμα, στη βόρεια και δυτική πλευρά του τυμπάνου του, μέχρι το ύψος της ποδιάς των παραθύρων
Η εκτεταμένη ανάπτυξη υγρασίας στον τρούλλο, γεγονός που ενδέχεται, με την πάροδο του χρόνου, να αποβεί μοιραίο για τη στατική επάρκειά του
Η κατάρρευση και η θραύση αρκετών από τα γείσα των στεγών
Η ανάπτυξη βιολογικών ρύπων – επιφανειακών κρουστών – πάνω στις εξωτερικές τοιχοποιίες στα σημεία απορροής υδάτων και η αποσάθρωση (κυψέλωση) των πωρολίθων ιδίως στη βόρεια όψη
Η ανάπτυξη ανώτερης βλάστησης στην ανωδομή του κτηρίου
Η κατά τόπους επικάλυψη των τοιχοποιιών με ασβέστη ή επίχρισμα
Η ύπαρξη καλωδιώσεων, μεγαφώνων, λαμπτήρων καπνοδόχου και μεταλλικών κουφωμάτων στις όψεις του ναού
Η κάλυψη των τοίχων του παρεκκλησίου εξωτερικά με επίχρισμα στο χρώμα της ώχρας, τα νεωτερικού τύπου ξύλινα κουφώματά του καθώς και η κάλυψη του τρούλλου του ιερού του με σχιστόπλακες Καρύστου.
Η πρόταση αποκατάστασης προβλέπει:
Την αποξήλωση των πλακών σκυροδέματος, την εξυγίανση των υποκείμενων θόλων και την αποκατάσταση της αρχικής μορφής και κλίσης των στεγών, με επικάλυψη από κολυμβητή κεράμωση. Ταυτόχρονα, θα συντηρηθούν και θα συμπληρωθούν τα πώρινα γείσα στη βάση τους
Την επισκευή του τρούλλου, με καθαίρεση του ενισχυτικού ημιδακτυλίου, εξυγίανση του θόλου του, κατασκευή νέας κολυμβητής επικεράμωσης, αντικατάσταση των κουφωμάτων των παραθύρων του, καθώς και με συντήρηση και συμπλήρωση των πώρινων λαξευτών στοιχείων του
Την εξυγίανση των τρουλλίσκων των κογχών του ιερού και την επικεράμωσή τους
Την καθαίρεση των εξωτερικών επιχρισμάτων του κυρίως ναού, τον καθαρισμό και τη συντήρηση των πώρινων δόμων και του κεραμοπλαστικού διακόσμου, καθώς και την αρμολόγηση στα σημεία που χρειάζεται

"Karystos revisited: Interaction networks of an Aegean island polity (sources and finds)".
Due to geographical and other reasons, connectivity or isolation are two of a large number of lenses one can use to explore political, religious and economic aspects of life in an ancient city through study of relevant finds. Cult is connected to polis identity, since what was religious and what was political were never quite separate in ancient Greek cities. Karystos, as one of the main Euboean city-states, is in this paper shown to have participated in a number of religious, political and trade networks that expanded for large part in the Aegean region and centered on Athens and Delos, as well as on Delphi in the mainland. An attempt is therefore made to revisit the cultic landscape of the polis of Karystos through a presentation of some of its attested relations to sanctuaries in other poleis and regional or Pan-Hellenic sanctuaries. In some aspects, local cult and trade relations are shown to have often co-existed, together with realistic political responses in cases polis survival or autonomy was threatened.

Σημαντώνη Μπουρνιά παρουσιάζεται ένας αριθμός αδημοσίευτων θραυσμάτων αγγείων γεωμετρικών χρόνων, από τις ανασκαφές που πραγματοποίησε ο Κ. Κουρουνιώτης στην Ερέτρια στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα. Τα όστρακα φυλάσσονται στο Εθνικό Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο, διακοσμούνται με εικονογραφικά θέματα και γραμμικά μοτίβα και παρουσιάζονται μαζί με αρχειακό υλικό από την περίοδο της ανασκαφής.

The Early Christian bath complex in Aliveri is situated chronologically in the 4th century and remained
in use until the 7th century. The rooms are arranged along a 30-metre-long axis, with a north-west to
south-east orientation. It is a typical balaneion (balneum), composed of a vestibulum, frigidarium, tepidarium
and caldarium. The hot areas were heated through the commonly used underground system
of ducts, the hypocausts.
The complex is built of a composite type of rubble masonry with brick courses, bonded with lime
mortar, resembling the Roman opus incertum mixtum. As usual, however, the walls were covered by
large slabs of marmor caristium. The same material is used for floor covering, along with large clay tiles
in some rooms. A mosaic has been found on the vestibulum floor, with black marble fragments against
a white background, depicting a swirling ivy sprout.
There is a clear need for conservation to halt the corrosion of the materials and prevent further destruction
of the monument’s ruins. The conservation project proposes to: a) repair the vegetation that
invades the ruins, b) repair the masonry and conservation of the materials, c) restore the structural elements
destroyed by the water supply pipes, d) conserve the floors and fill them in with contemporary
materials, e) construct a visitors’ route, with information stands, and f) study the conformation of the
context and the surrounding area.

The tower of Vassiliko, Euboea, chronologically can be placed in the Venetian period (in Euboea 1204-1470). It is one of the earlier samples of its architectural type. It belongs to a ‘network’ of similar towers situated near close to main streets. These towers had mostly defensive character and were also used as observation-towers for the fertile farmlands around them. Some of them seem to have also been part of a ‘communication’ system between distant sites. The monument stands in good condition, as far as it concerns its stonebuilt walls and the bifurcated crenellation, but the roof, the floors, the windows and the door are missing. It is an almost orthogonal building (exterior dimensions 8.40x8.20 m) and it measures 18,70 m. full height. The ground-floor has no openings. The only entrance of the tower is at the south facade at first floor level, with one narrow window in the centre of its wall that indicates a defensive role. The second floor was used as a ‘living room’ provided with a fireplace and a mural with madona, one window in each facade and a cantilevered structure that plays the role of machicolation.
The restoration project of the Medieval Tower of Vassiliko proposes the reconstruction of the wooden floors, the windows, the roof and the internal staircases. A balcony will also be constructed in front of the only entrance at first floor level with a self-standing metallic staircase or a lift. Finally, at the first and second floors an exhibition about the monument and its geographical, historical and political environment will be developed.

Trois campagnes de fouilles conduites par l’École suisse d’archéologie en Grèce (ESAG) entre 2015 et 2017 dans le gymnase d’Érétrie ont été nécessaires pour achever la fouille d’un puits creusé dans le rocher de l’acropole sur plus de 13 mètres de profondeur. Son remplissage a livré un riche ensemble de découvertes, parmi lesquelles un surprenant mélange d’ossements d’une centaine de nouveau-nés, d’une douzaine de lépreux et de différents animaux, accompagnés de plusieurs artéfacts en bronze, dont trois fragments d’une statue d’éphèbe. Cette communication sera consacrée à l’analyse d’une autre sculpture en bronze doré, d’une dizaine de centimètres de hauteur et qui réunit toutes les caractéristiques du type de l’Artémis d’Éphèse. Sa mise au jour avec sa base circulaire au fond du puits pose la question de la raison qui a poussé un-e Érétrien-ne du IIe siècle apr. J.-C. à jeter cette statuette en parfait état avec d’autres objets de valeur. La découverte de milliers d’ossements de nouveau-nés dans les couches recouvrant l’Artémis éphésienne pourrait suggérer une offrande funéraire pour des individus qui n’ont pas eu droit à une sépulture dans la nécropole.

Ο ναός του Αγίου Ιωάννη βρίσκεται στο άνω τμήμα του οικισμού του Ταξιάρχη, στον Δήμο Ωρεών της Β. Εύβοιας. Eίναι μονόχωρος, με ημιεξαγωνική κόγχη ιερού και καλύπτεται με δίρριχτη ξύλινη στέγη.                                         
Η σημερινή εικόνα του ναού παρουσιάζεται αρκετά αλλοιωμένη, τόσο από τις περιμετρικές επιχώσεις, όσο και από νεώτερες επεμβάσεις, όπως το νεωτερικό βάθρο με το στέγαστρο από σκυρόδεμα στη βόρεια όψη.
Η πρόταση αποκατάστασης περιλαμβάνει την κατασκευή υποθεμελίωσης, την κατεδάφιση του νεωτερικού στεγάστρου, την αποκάλυψη του περιγράμματος του χαγιατιού, λιθοσυρραφές, τοπικά ενέματα και αρμολόγημα, την κατασκευή νέας ξύλινης στέγης, αντικατάσταση των κουφωμάτων, αποκάλυψη του αρχικού λίθινου δαπέδου, καθαρισμό και συντήρηση του λίθινου ανάγλυφου διακόσμου, συντήρηση του αναλημματικού τοίχου, ήπιες παρεμβάσεις διαμόρφωσης στον άμεσο περιβάλλοντα χώρο και νέο Η/Μ εξοπλισμό.

A CONTRIBUTION TO THE STUDY OF THE ARCHAIC POTTERY FROM EUBOEA
A small number of representative vases of the archaic period from Euboea are presented in this paper.
Οld finds in the National Archaeological Museum, as well as new discoveries from recent excavations in Karystos
are included too. The Euboean ceramic corpus was firstly studied by Kourouniotis, Boardman, Bothmer,
Ure, Kilinsky, Metzger, Descoeudres and others.
A new find from Karystos, an archaic pithos-amphora with the depiction of a siren, with close Corinthian
and Protoattic parallels is described. Setting that as a starting point, an overview of some of the known
data on the archaic Euboean ceramic production, including reference to the local Orientalising - Corinthianizing,
Atticizing ware as well as Attic and Corinthian imports found in the main cities of the island, Chalkis,
Eretria and Karystos is attempted. Moreover, a brief recapitulation of certain aspects of archaic euboean ceramic
production is provided, focusing on the vases ascribed to the Dolphin Group.
In short, new data on finds from old and recent excavations in Euboean sites can be added to the Euboean
corpus, as well as to a tentative catalogue of Attic, Corinthian and other imports to this island, leading to fresh
stimuli for research and study. This paper provides a preliminary and brief update of some features of the
Euboean ceramic production of the 6th century B.C., bringing into the discussion finds from Karystos, aiming
at underscoring the variety and adaptability of the expressive means of some ceramic workshops active in
the main city-states of the island during the same period.

The purpose of my paper is to analyze the various testimonies that speak of joint voyages and colonization of Locrians and Euboeans in the areas between the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic. Before that, I regard some of the traditions of the foundation of Aeolian Cyme and Phocaea where relationships between Locrians, Phocaeans and Abantes of Euboea can be observed. Likewise, some traditions located in the western boundaries of Hesperian Locris also point to the Euboean world. In the main part of the paper, we will review the traditions concerning the joint nostos of Abantes and Locrians around Abantis and Thronium in the northern territories of Epirus; the importance of this episode is great because it shows how, already in the fifth century BC, these traditions were well established and had been spread even to Olympia, as shown by the monument erected there by Apollonia to commemorate his victory over Thronium in Abantis. We also propose that one of the statues that were in that monument may correspond to Oileus Ajax instead of Telamonian Ajax. If in all these cases the data come from legendary traditions, from which it is difficult to know to what extent they reflect a historical reality and to what period they could correspond, the information that we have of the establishment of Epizephyrian Locris, both literary and archaeological, may confirm mechanisms of collaboration between Euboeans and Locrians in the first moments of the Locrian colony. Some traditions which would also place Locrians in North Africa may be related to the possible Euboean presence in neighbouring territories, as mentioned by some authors. It is suggested, to conclude, that the collaboration between Euboeans and Locrians at the time of the founding of the Italian colony may have favoured the development, possibly in a Locrian background, of stories that linked the two peoples in various enterprises, always in peripheral areas of that vast territory which was called Hesperia.

A number of Euboean stone sources are briefly explored
in this paper, such as limestone and sandstone quarries at
Eretria and Karystos. Archaeological and inscriptional
finds related to the local use of stones from the 5th to the
1st century BC are mentioned, together with appropriate
examples, in an attempt to outline some pre-Roman uses
of local quarries or of imported stones and to evaluate
similarities and differences between the local market demands and consumption built upon basis of regional city-state connections and needs, versus the large-scale Roman Imperial quarrying expansion, trade systematization and Mediterranean market orientation.

As of 2009 the Ephorate of Antiquities of Euboea (former 11th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities) has been working in collaboration with the VU University Amsterdam on a fieldwork and excavation project centring on the archaeological site of Plakari at Karystos in Southern Euboea. The earliest signs of occupation on the site date to the Final Neolithic period. During the Early Iron Age the site accommodated a cult place that dates back to the 11th century BC. Based on the study of finds, cultic activities on the site seem to have continued in later periods too.
The ceramic finds discussed in the article were found during the excavation seasons of 2011 and 2012 mainly on the floor layers of a small building (Building A) in the site. A number of representative vases and lamps are presented in the article. They are black-glazed, banded and plain oinochoai, jugs, skyphoi, cups, one-handlers and handleless bowls, one fish-plate, a lid with relief decoration, one lekythos and one incense burner, as well as some plain lamps. A number of the vases bear graffiti that have been examined in the article as bearing witness to cultic and sympotic activities performed in the site. The study of the assemblage aims to assess dating of Building A, as well as to ascertain some of the traits of the local ceramic production of the 5th and 4th centuries BC, taking in view influences South Euboean pottery workshops appear to have received from Athens, Chalcis, Eretria and other regions.

This paper offers a brief outline of the results of the salvage excavations and surveys undertaken in the years from 1994 to 2005 by the 11th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities (IA EPKA) in the region of Styra in Euboea (modern demos of Styra at that period, now incorporated in the demos of Karystos), together with mention of relative source material. The brief assessment of old and new data presented here is given as a preliminary summary of the topography of the ancient demos of Styra, which, according to inscriptional data, was incorporated in the Eretrian territory, during the last years of the 5th century B.C. or a short time later.

XIXe siècle ont révélé de nombreux vestiges : plusieurs sanctuaires
et monuments publics, des quartiers d’habitation et un imposant
mur d’enceinte. Le mobilier mis au jour comprend une abondante
céramique d’époque hellénistique, qui constitue le coeur de cet
ouvrage.
L’auteur a revisité les ensembles de trouvailles répartis entre
la fin du IVe et le Ier siècle av. J.-C. Il propose une chrono-typologie
du répertoire céramique en usage à Érétrie à cette époque.
L’analyse comparée de la production locale et des importations
permet une meilleure compréhension de l’économie de la cité. Le
marché érétrien se caractérise à la fois par une forme d’autarcie,
les ateliers locaux répondant à l’essentiel de la demande de la
population, et par son insertion dans les réseaux d’échanges
commerciaux. Les potiers ont en effet rapidement adopté les
innovations venues d’abord d’Athènes et de la Macédoine, puis
de l’Asie Mineure et de l’Orient.
Grâce à l’examen des couches de destruction, des remplissages
de puits ou de fosses et de quelques trésors monétaires,
l’auteur propose une nouvelle histoire de la ville et de son déclin
progressif. À l’occupation dense du site jusqu’au milieu ou à la
seconde moitié du IIIe siècle succède un habitat clairsemé dans
un paysage urbain très ruiné, avant un retrait des habitants sur
l’acropole au milieu du Ier siècle. Les quartiers d’habitation ont
subi d’importantes destructions au milieu du IIIe siècle et en
86 av. J.-C. En revanche, les sièges de 267 et de 198 av. J.-C. n’ont
pas été aussi dévastateurs que ce qui a été suggéré jusqu’ici.

A three-year excavation program between 2015 and 2017 was carried out by the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece in the Gymnasium of Eretria on the island of Euboea. The primary goal was to extend the excavation in the newly discovered eastern part of the building and to open trial trenches to collect evidence for the construction date of the whole monument. The excavation of a 13,45 m deep well yielded a rich assemblage of animal and human bones together with exceptional finds, such as the two forearms belonging to the near life-size statue of a young man or a gilt bronze figurine of the Ephesian Artemis. The aim of this paper is to present a first insight into this striking discovery.

The South Euboean Gulf archaeological survey has presented many challenges to the documentation team of H.I.M.A. It has served as a case-study for the application of 3D recording methods to ancient
shipwrecks, which are located at depths between -22 to -47 m. and often recorded under difficult conditions that are imposed during an archaeological survey of a specific geographical region, with
limited time in the field.
This article constitutes a synopsis of the geometric documentation work conducted at all 28 wreck sites, which were located during the survey.

Approximately 20 presentations and discussions were offered by an international group of professionals and the proceedings were well attended by colleagues and a large number of interested citizens from the Styra and Karystos communities. Styra and Southern Euboea have a rich history, but mysterious and unexplained archaeological remains have received very little scientific investigation. The aim of this symposium was to bring together Greek and foreign experts to present new archaeological findings and relevant information from their research in the region between Eretria and Karystos. A predominate theme throughout the symposium was to consider the ancient materials in view of modern trends in cultural resource management and the discussion of means for preservation and presentation of the ancient monuments and artifacts to the mutual benefit of the local community, visitors, the environment, and posterity.

Many Attic pots reached the Eretrian market after the Geometric period and exerted a strong
influence on local pottery production. The Eretrian ceramic repertoire at the beginning of the
Hellenistic period resembles the Athenian one, except in some particular Euboean forms and
decorations. But a major change in Eretrian pottery production took place during the first
half of the 3rd c. B. C., when there was a drastic reduction in Athenian imports. From then
on and until the end of the century, the local potters developed their own style by rejecting Attic
innovations and turning to new sources of inspiration beyond the Euripus Strait on the
mainland: Boeotia, western Locris and Thessaly provide the best comparative material for the
Eretrian pottery of the last three quarters of the 3rd century. The analysis of drinking vessels
allows us to study the connection of the Eretrians with these neighbouring regions beyond the
Euboean Gulf. The aim of our paper is therefore to depart from an excessively Athenocentric
view of Eretrian commercial and cultural horizons and to highlight interactions between the
Euboean city and central Greece during the 3rd c. B. C.

En marge des fouilles du Gymnase d’Érétrie, l’ESAG a effectué en 2018 une série de sondages dans la Palestre Sud, afin de préciser l’histoire de cet édifice à vocation gymnique. Ce monument public est installé dans le quartier sud-est de la ville antique, à proximité de l’Iséion, du Port intérieur et des fortications. Il comprend une vaste cour carrée de plus de 22 m de côté (A2), bordée à l’ouest et au sud par un portique coudé (B-C) et au nord par une large exèdre à colonnade interne (I). Le flanc oriental de la palestre est occupé par une série de pièces de fonction indéterminée (K à Y), tandis qu’un sanctuaire d’Ilithyie est aménagé dans l’angle nord-ouest du complexe (E).

Le hasard nous a conduit à étudier la céramique d’époque hellénistique de deux cités que rien ne lie  : d’abord Érétrie dans le cadre d’une thèse de doctorat sous la direction de Karl Reber et de Susan I. Rotroff, puis Argos en vue de la publication des fouilles conduites par l’École française d’Athènes sur la colline de l’Aspis sous la direction de Gilles Touchais et de Sylvian Fachard. À Érétrie, notre projet consiste en l’établissement d’une nouvelle typologie de la céramique entre le dernier quart du IVe et le milieu du Ier siècle en prenant en compte l’ensemble du mobilier issu de nombreux secteurs de la ville antique fouillés durant plus de cinquante an- nées par l’École suisse d’archéologie en Grèce. À Argos, la céramique mise au jour sur l’Aspis correspond pour l’essentiel à une phase d’occupation de courte durée entre le dernier tiers, voire le dernier quart du IVe siècle et les premières années du IIIe siècle. La présente étude est donc limitée chronologiquement pour les deux villes au début de l’époque hellénistique, soit au dernier quart du IVe et au premier quart du IIIe siècle.
Du point de vue de la culture matérielle, l’un des principaux intérêts présenté par Argos et Érétrie est leur rôle, que l’on pourrait qualifier de secondaire, dans la production de céramique : les potiers de ces deux cités répondent en effet à l’essentiel de la demande locale et de fait leurs productions ne connaissent qu’une diffusion limitée à une échelle régionale (l’Eubée centrale pour les ateliers érétriens et la partie orientale du Péloponnèse pour les argiens). Argos et Érétrie tiennent de même une place marginale par rapport a` Athènes et Corinthe, qui sont toutes deux des centres de production importants et des cités dont le mobilier céramique a fait l’objet de nombreux travaux qui leur confèrent un statut de référence pour l’étude de la céramique d’é- poque hellénistique. C’est pour ces raisons que nous qualifions ici Argos et Érétrie de cités de la «périphérie». Ni les Argiens, ni les Érétriens ne considéraient bien entendu que leurs villes te- naient une place d’une quelconque manière «périphérique» par rapport à leurs voisines.
Avec nos connaissances acquises à Érétrie, nous pensions retrouver à Argos un répertoire comparable, d’autant que les deux cités sont relativement proches l’une de l’autre : moins de 200 km les séparent par la route ou environ 230 km par voie maritime, soit une très courte distance à l’échelle du bassin méditerranéen et des conquêtes d’Alexandre le Grand. De manière peut-être un peu naïve, nous nous attendions donc à une forme de koiné de la culture matérielle à l’échelle de la Grèce centrale, et ce d’autant plus pour le début de l’époque hellénistique. En effet, de nombreux points communs peuvent être relevés entre les ensembles de céramique des deux cités, notamment dans certaines formes et types de vases communs à Argos et à Érétrie, dans la prédominance des céramiques fines à vernis noir ou encore dans l’adoption de la technique décorative dite West Slope. Les points communs restent cependant plus ténus que les divergences entre leurs répertoires respectifs. En menant une analyse comparative de leurs assemblages de céramique, on s’aperçoit en effet que les potiers ou indirectement les populations des deux villes ont préféré des formes ou des types de vases différents, tant pour la consommation des boissons que pour le service de la nourriture ou la préparation des aliments. Certaines céramiques largement représentées à Argos sont ainsi quasiment absentes à Érétrie à la même période et inversement. La comparaison des deux répertoires conduit ainsi à relever des traits régionaux argiens et érétriens ou plus largement péloponnésiens et eubéens. D’autre part, quelques formes et types de vases sont parfois produits sur une plus longue période dans l’une ou l’autre cité, ce qui trahit une forme de traditionalisme ou de conservatisme, ou du moins un refus des nouveautés apparues sur le marché des cités voisines.
Pour mener à bien cet exercice de comparaison entre Argos et Érétrie, nous évaluerons dans un premier temps la part d’importations attiques et corinthiennes pour chaque site et leur impact sur la production locale. Les différences notables entre les répertoires argien et érétrien seront ensuite relevées en regard des assemblages d’Athènes et de Corinthe. Les formes ou les types de vases qui trahissent des phénomènes de régionalisme et/ou de conservatisme seront finalement mis en lumière. Faute de place, toutes les formes et tous les types de vases ne pourront pas être présentés pour chaque cité et nous limiterons donc notre propos aux exemples les plus caractéristiques.

Συνοπτική παρουσίαση επιλεγμένων στοιχείων από την ιστορία και αρχαιολογία της νοτιοευβοϊκής πόλης-κράτους της Καρύστου και της επικράτειάς της, από τους γεωμετρικούς μέχρι τους ρωμαϊκούς αυτοκρατορικούς χρόνους. Η μελέτη επιχειρεί επίσης να ανιχνεύσει μερικές όψεις ενός δυναμικού δικτύου επικοινωνιών, πολιτικών και οικονομικών σχέσεων και εμπορικών ανταλλαγών, στο οποίο μετείχαν, κατά την ίδια περίοδο, η Κάρυστος και άλλες πόλεις της Εύβοιας, μαζί με πόλεις του χερσαίου ελλαδικού χώρου, του νησιωτικού Αιγαίου και της ανατολικής Μεσογείου.
A number of selected issues of the history and archaeology of the city-state of Kaystos and its territory, from the Geometric to the Roman Imperial period, are discussed in this study. An attempt is also made to trace some views of a dynamic network of communications, political, financial and trade relations Karystos and other Euboean cites participated in during the same period, together with cities of the Greek mainland, the Aegean islands and the eastern Mediterranean.
