François Jullien

Contemporary French philosopher and sinologist François Jullien raised the “écart”  in 2011. He chose “detour” into Chinese, then return to French to reflect the concept and “impensé” (unthought) that are in the habit of European culture. He believes that through getting into l’écart, it will be able to parallel and appeal the thoughts then bring on “faire travailler l’écart”. In 2006, the poet Esquive–Escale–Esquille edited by Jean Lewinski, which was not released in France but published in Taiwan. In order to make Taiwanese reader better able to connect to these unique contemporary French poems, he selected 17 French poets or authors who were born in 1940-1975, choosing their extraordinary pieces and introducing their biography and background, asking them to recommend the literatures that are most worth to be translate into Chinese. Not only presenting the poems and the articles in paralleling two linguistic version, French and Chinese, of the same text, Lewinski also added six phrase de respiration to separate the chapter catalogue, pulling apart “Introduction”, “preface”, “author”, and “journal, press, publisher and institution” and inserting “écart” into each topics. This essay will be using “écart” to analysis the poems from these poets by examining the experiment of the content and the format to explore more possibilities in contemporary poetry.

For this study, we propose to analyze the film Modern Times, by Charles Chaplin, from the identification and insertion of its sound elements, and the impact of these choices on the film narrative. In it, word, music, noise and silence are at the service of emotion, solemnity, comedy, norm and its transgression. The Little Tramp and his inadequacy to the world: we wonder if this encounter between the modernity, chaotic and hostile, and the existence of the protagonist produces what François Jullien calls " dis-coincidence" (dé-coïncidence). The philosopher claims that dis-coincidence to be a historical issue inherent in artistic creation. In the midst talkie's era, Chaplin refuses to use the word for dialogue and narration. However, he makes a sound film. This could be an action of the director interpreted in the light of dis-coincidence? The spoken word exists in rare and occasional moments, in the creation of a modality of 'monologue' – that is intermediated by modern technologies – and also as sung word. The philosopher Vilém Flusser defends the " gesture of speaking " (le geste de parler) as "one of the manifestations of human dignity". This leads us to ask how far this gesture takes place in Chaplin's aesthetic choice, and whether it could be recognized as a dis-coincidence. We will adopt Rick Altman's methodological approach to film sound treatment. Altman proposes the notion that the analysis of the sound track of a film should be made on the basis of the established relationship between the existing sounds.

In her introduction to this volume, translator Paula Varsano quotes Jullien’s description of his “lifelong foray into Chinese philosophy” as “a never-ending detour” (8). That is a perceptive starting point for this essay, first published in French in 1991, which is itself an appropriate prelude to Jullien’s comparative study of “strategies of meaning in China and Greece,” later expanded and systematized in Detour and Access (Zone Books, 2000, originally published in French in 1995). Here, detour is an effective strategy of meaning, and Jullien is a master. The object of his study has been Greek philosophy--the “West,” and Chinese philosophy has functioned as an “outside” from which to see it more clearly. Jullien describes many Chinese analogues of this strategy of indirection, but his practice of it, even more than his description, is instructive.

Dieses Buch kreist um widerstreitende Perspektiven auf die chinesische Philosophie. Politisch gesehen ist die Beantwortung der Frage »Was ist chinesische Philosophie?« heute notwendiger denn je, denn die Modernisierung Chinas wirkt zunehmend auf den Westen zurück. Mit ihr kommt eine transkulturelle Dynamik zwischen Altem und Neuem, Östlichem und Westlichem ins Spiel, die das komparative Verhältnis mehr oder weniger stabiler – nationaler, kultureller, sprachlicher – Identitäten sprengt. China lässt sich nicht länger auf Abstand halten.

Fabian Heubel untersucht die Bedeutung dieser Dynamik vor allem in Auseinandersetzung mit dem Begriff »chinesisches Denken« (François Jullien), dem Motiv eines „neuen Paradigmas der Subjektivität“ (Jean François Billeter) und der Idee einer „kritischen Rekonstruktion“ der klassischen chinesischen Philosophie (Heiner Roetz).

Sono le coordinate, tratte dalla riflessione filosofica di Gilles Deleuze e dalla sua interpretazione di Spinoza in particolare, su cui si muove il presente lavoro, in un percorso che attraverso l'opera di Deleuze e Guattari e lasciandosi trasportare dai mille rivoli filosofici che scorrono nel pensiero di questi autori ... può condurre anche ad interessarsi di filosofie orientali. Ma qual'è, allora, l'Oriente evocato da Deleuze e Guattari? Si tratta in ogni caso di un incontro che obbliga a mettere in movimento il pensiero, l'incontro con l'Altro da cui nasce sempre l'impulso alla ricerca: forse anche a quella ricerca un po' eccentrica di un "divenire spontaneo", come ultimo divenire deleuziano.

In this short paper I will try to illustrate how, beyond certain philosophical currents that have followed one another in the 20th century, there is an alternative and complementary way of raising objections to a dualism between body and soul. In the first part, I will try to approach François Jullien's work by showing how, according to his interpretation, Chinese thought has followed a different path from that of dualism in considering the soul-body relationship, preferring an immanent dynamic polarity. I will try to insist on the possibility of using these conceptual resources to mobilise - in the second part - a conception of the body different from the traditional one as subjected to the monopolising canon of beauty or mechanicism, hoping to propose two themes and two possible lines of reflection that integrate theory and practice.

The digital age demands that we retune and update our sensibility. In his rigorous, schematic corpus, Flusser shows us how. As we prehend his elaborations and intimations, we find ourselves returning to the worldview behind the immemorial I Ching, which epitomizes programmatic thinking and contains an ethical calculus of the expedient and the optimum. This article creates a space of exploration between Flusser's corpus and the I Ching, reveals the resonance in between, poses Flusserian questions about the I Ching, and brings to the fore aspects of the book that otherwise would remain largely unnoticed. It also points out that the digital revolution was predicated upon a Leibnizian reduction of the vitalistic, inter-transforming yin and yang to the bimodal 0 and 1, and points to the desirability of vitalizing the digital. At a moment of self-reflexivity, the article reveals its own accidentally derived hexagrammic structure. It can be read as a hexagram (the six sections) within the frame of another hexagram (the Introduction and the Closing Remarks). The readers are invited to figure out the second hexagram on their own and see it as the "flip to" hexagram.

Leggendo il libro: Le trasformazioni silenziose, scritto con gran mestiere e con intelligenza creativa da  François Jullien, se ne ricava un’immagine – a nostro avviso – che tende a dare troppa importanza alla tradizione filosofica e a trascurare la realtà quotidiana cinese dall’antichità ad oggi. L’immagine ci propone da un lato un Occidente drogato dalla metafisica dell’Evento, incapace di ascoltare il ritmo lento e naturale dei cambiamenti della Natura e dall’altro, una Cina tutta contemplativa che basa ogni suo piccolo gesto su una straordinaria capacità di leggere le trasformazioni silenziose. Il nostro saggio cerca di mettere in evidenza i punti critici di questa interpretazione.

Il saggio esplora l'opera di Goffredo Parise (Vicenza, 1929-Treviso, 1986) a partire dalla centralità della percezione e della vi-sione, quali dispositivi della scrittura capaci di riflettere l'atto originario di apprensione del mondo. Per indagare tali questioni, l'au-trice forza i confini prettamente letterari per sondare terreni vicini alla filosofia (Maurice Merleau-Ponty per il rapporto con la feno-menologia e François Jullien in relazione all'Oriente), all'antropologia del visivo e alla critica d'arte (Georges Didi-Huberman). L'a-nalogia con la riflessione filosofica-ovvero la possibilità di rileggere l'opera parisiana attraverso la lente del primato percettivo-e l'affinità con la pratica pittorica testi-moniano la necessità di superare frontiere tipicamente letterarie e l'esigenza di utiliz-zare strumenti interpretativi provenienti da altri campi di indagine. "L'aspetto visibile-ma anche tattile, uditivo e olfattivo-permette di raggiungere per via diretta quello che c'è sotto, dentro, in mezzo ai fatti. This article fulfills a long-felt desire to create an artifact that allows the reader to get a holistic sense of interology at a glance. The idea of interality is to the entries explicated below as oneness is to manyness. As a philosophical undertaking, interology wills nothing short of a worldview shift, and an overcoming of traditional Western ontology. Interology has a vitalistic bent and cures clinging. A thorough-going interology is extricating. Although most entries cast interality in an affirmative light, some of them (e.g., alienation) serve as a counterweight to remind the reader that interality is not to be single-mindedly romanticized, in the same way that not all guanxi is life-enhancing. The article is of a piece with all previous and upcoming articles on interality and interology. A few entries are listed as the keywords to pay homage to the author's home discipline, even though interality studies as a line of inquiry is post-disciplinary.

While there is still much work to be done on the relationship between art, technology, and philosophy, Art and Cosmotechnics serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of what, for Hui, seems to matter most: technodiversity. The book provides a fruitful look into the way philosophical investigations of art may benefit from comparative approaches to technology and cultural cosmology. While undeniably dense and challenging, it will reward patient readers with its mapping of a complex history of intellectual and political exchange. While not every node fits harmoniously in the network of links Hui seeks to establish between technology and nature, East and West, Art and Cosmotechnics is nevertheless a bold synthesis, both recursive and organic. It reads a lot, in fact, like cosmotechnics.

Inspired by post-Marxist theories of discourse theory, hegemony, conflict, and pluralism, and using tension as a guiding philosophical, political, and artistic force, the book expands the politico-philosophical debate on theories of performance. François Jullien a voulu accéder à un extrême-ailleurs de notre façon d’être, à la ressemblance de l’extrême-orient. Vue de cet ailleurs, l’entreprise entière de la philosophie, et de la science qui la prolonge, apparaît comme un simple cas particulier. Or, ce cas particulier semble avoir épuisé son pouvoir d’élucidation, même s’il continue de servir de moteur à un pouvoir de contrôle. Sa pulsion de réification devient un générateur de paradoxes (en physique quantique tout particulièrement), et la métaphore fluide contre laquelle il s’est édifié permet au contraire de mieux lire ses formalismes opératoirement efficaces. Pour nous réapproprier notre propre création scientifique, il nous reste alors à surmonter l’aveuglement de nos héritages culturels.

En 1976, Deleuze et Guattari publient aux éditions de Minuit un petit livre intitulé Rhizome. Ce livre est un point de passage entre les deux tomes de Capitalisme et schizophrénie : il enregistre d’une part l’écriture à deux de L’Anti-Œdipe publié en 1972, et il annonce d’autre part le programme de Mille plateaux auquel il servira d’introduction en 1980. Moment décisif de leur collaboration, Deleuze et Guattari y théorisent en effet pour la première fois la nouvelle image de la pensée qu’ils mobilisent – une image nomadique de la pensée (nomadologie) – et la nouvelle pratique de la philosophie qu’ils mettent en œuvre – une philosophie des multiplicités. Mais pourquoi Deleuze et Guattari ont-ils choisi d’exprimer ce renouvellement philosophique à travers un système végétal jusque-là privé de toute dignité conceptuelle ? Quel rapport peut-il bien y avoir entre le rhizome – l’igname, le manioc, la patate douce, etc. – et la nomadologie ?

Alla pratica pigra del pensare per differenze Jullien propone di affiancare – e anche di sostituire – quella dello scarto (écart). Di cosa si tratta? Jullien ne parla come di un movimento continuo e sinuoso che invece di contrapporre le differenze in maniera statica le integra in dinamiche di attrazione che maturano attraverso il disturbo (dérangement) e l’esplorazione. Una messa in tensione che genera fecondità e alimenta la curiosità:

Cet article veut questionner la situation de la littérature au temps de
la mondialisation. Le désir du sinologue François Jullien de découvrir
s’il y a encore la possibilité d'établir un dialogue entre les cultures
- pas en termes d'identité, mais d'écart et de fécondité culturelle – a
suscité ma curiosité. Comment la littérature et l’imaginaire des
lecteurs sont-ils en train de se modifier ? Notre terrain d’observation
privilégié sera celui de ce que nous appellerons l’écriture migrante,
lorsque les écrivains immigrés utilisent la langue du pays d'accueil
pour écrire leurs histoires. Ce sujet, à son tour, conduit aux questions
du canon littéraire, de l'intertextualité et de l'interprétation comme
base lexicale pour la réécriture d’un nouveau réseau de mots-clés de la
littérature, à l'époque de la postmodernité.

Abstract (English):
This essay critically read the peri-urban space with respect to its design potential, starting with a conversation with François Jullien, stressing some concepts expressed in his book “Vivre de paysage ou l’impensé de la raison” (2014). The aim of the essay is to establish a parallel between the landscape concept expressed by Jullien, referring to the Chinese tradition, and in particular its conditions of space in-between and écart, with the peri-urban territorial condition. This approach seems particularly useful to overcome the descriptive and prefigurative limits linked to the topological condition of this space: fragmentary, hybrid, discontinuous, contradictory. The holistic vision supported by the French philosopher seems to emphasize the potential of the peri-urban as a “space in transition“, and helps to get out from some persistent conceptual disciplinary hitches. Thus, the contamination between this interpretation of the landscape and the studies coming from the tradition of landscape ecology can contribute to a new discourse on the peri-urban landscape and the possibilities of its re-signification through a renewed idea of the project.

Il paper rilegge criticamente il territorio periurbano e le sue potenzialità a partire da un’intervista rilasciata da François Jullien in merito ad alcuni concetti, pertinenti all’oggetto di riflessione, espressi all’interno del libro “Vivre de paysage ou l’impensé de la raison” (2014) . Scopo del sag- gio è di mettere in relazione il concetto di paesaggio espresso da Jullien, riferito alla tradizione cinese, ed in particolare le sue condizioni di spazio entre ed ècart, con le caratteristiche tipiche del territorio periurbano. Questa impostazione sembra particolarmente utile per superare i limiti descrittivi e prefigurativi legati alla condizione topologica di questo spazio, frammentario, ibrido, discontinuo, contradditorio. La visione olistica sostenuta dallo studioso francese sembra infatti esaltare le potenzialità del periurbano come “campo di transizione”, aiutando ad uscire da alcune secche concettuali persistenti nel dibattito disciplinare. La contaminazione tra questa interpretazione del paesaggio e gli studi provenienti dalla tradizione del landscape ecology possono così contribuire a un nuovo discorso sul paesaggio periurbano e sulle possibilità di una sua risignificazione mediante una rinnovata idea di progetto.

對於管理個人生命資本的無情要求，我們應當如何批判？當資本主義的生產拜物教占領所有創意活動時，我們該如何面對此趨勢？在這樣的脈絡下，《莊子》的研究便觸及了當代與古代的特定呼應。《莊子》可作為反對每個當代「策略論述」的重要代表； 他以富有想像力的方式，批評能量論的工具化，因而引起「我們」的注意。對於強制剝削生命能量所引發的問題，他曾澈底反省，但並不因此否定所有與修養工夫相關的自我技術（自我技術是指自我對自我的工作，並涉及能量主體的諸種管理方法）。《莊子》有助於我們反思那被化約為策略的生命能量論，並進行從能量論的內在邏輯所開發出的「內在批判」(immanente Kritik)。
朱利安(François Jullien)強調：能量論與過程思維的連接，包含了維持演變的「能移」態度(se maintenir evolutif)。由此，策略性地增強自己的生命資本，反而會落入僵化和停滯的狀態，導致養生目標的消解，亦即：對生命的強制性管理將有害於生命。在筆者看來，對《莊子》的生命政治解讀，牽涉到美學修養的關鍵問題，即一種既是美學、又是批判的修養模式如何可能的問題。此處，筆者對法語《莊子》研究的反省，將跨越朱利安的討論範圍，試圖凸顯以《莊子》為典範的文人美學所蘊含的批判態度。

У статті досліджено проблему співвідношення в літературній творчості західної та східної моделей часу. В основі огляду – концепція французького філософа Ф. Жульєна, викладена у праці “Про ″час″. Елементи філософії ″жити″”. Тримаючи в полі зору феномен китайського сприйняття часу як погляду “зовні”, Ф. Жульєн акцентує увагу на тому, що час у західній традиції мислиться як протяжна і подільна величина; звідси – уявлення про час у стосунку до простору. У творчості сучасних авторів єдиним виходом із пастки часу, що “не вміщується” в мить, виявляється спаціалізація – спроба опросторити мить, зробити її об’ємною, багатовимірною.
The problem of interrelation between western and oriental time models in literary works has been investigated in the article. The conception of French philosopher F. Jullien in his work “Du “temps”. Eléments d’une philosophie du vivre” has been made the basis of the survey. Viewing the phenomenon of the Chinese time perception as the look “from the outside”, F. Jullien emphasizes that time in the western tradition is seen as the drawling and divisible quantity; hence – the idea of time in its relation to space. The only possible way out of the time which cannot be “housed” into the moment, in the works contemporary writers is the spatialisation: an attempt to make the moment spatial, to make it voluminous and multidimensional.

Mental breakthroughs occur in singular spatiotemporal intervals in a triggered fashion. As a praxis, following the brush and writing in the moment is by no means unprecedented. Rather, it has been a well-established genre, especially in literary circles. Humanity's taste has cooled down significantly since the onset of the electric age. Unfinishedness has since become a desirable quality in Western artifacts as well. Thinking quantizes and transpires after the fashion of intercerebral relays. Nietzsche's philosophical praxis, McLuhan's mediumistic probes, William S. Burroughs's literary experimentation, Virilio's phenomenological reflections, Michael McGee's rhetorical explorations, and so on all point to the efficacy and serviceability of "fragmatics." It is about time for this genre of writing to be adopted by the interality studies community. The following provocations have been composed over an extended period of time. Were it not for the availability of this generic convention, many of them would not have the opportunity to meet the reader, let alone in the guise of spurts of nomad thought in the raw. Although visually disconnected, the provocations are nevertheless acoustically resonant, and reveal the boundless and bottomless domain of interology as a philosophy of the future. In a game of go, the first pieces placed on the board pave the way for follow-up placements. Hence the subtitle. In all honesty, one does not have to be a fragmatist to be an interologist. On the other hand, fragmatics is by no means incompatible with interology. As a matter of fact, it enacts a dimension of the interological sensibility. Seemingly seamless articles are, upon closer examination, no more than pointillist verbal artifacts. Interologists are simply open and open-minded about this.

George Steiner famously declared that, after Babel, all understanding is translating. Poetry and philosophy turn out to pose the challenge of untranslatability. In my paper, I map out the complex intertwining of translation and hermeneutics, including the interplay of interpretation. Moving from Steiner’s fidelity cycle to Ricœur’s linguistic hospitality, a shift of accent from the concepts of difference, identity and universality towards distance and encounter can be observed. With regard to translation as metaphor, understanding metaphor, the necessity of reflecting upon one’s own language is taken into account. To challenge untranslatabilities and rethink the ‘living’ aspect of translation Jullien’s divergence into the possible polarity of reliability and sincerity proposes an opening.

En el marco del 1° Coloquio de Eurocentrismo y Filosofía, el Departamento de Filosofía de la Universidad de Chile tiene el agrado de invitar a toda la comunidad universitaria y extrauniversitaria a una pequeña conferencia que dictará el profesor François Jullien, catedrático de la Universidad de París VII-Diderot y una de las figuras más prominentes del panorama filosófico contemporáneo.

A lo largo de su destacada carrera, François Jullien ha explorado aquello que la filosofía europea parece haber olvidado: China. A través de un paso por sus diversas tradiciones de pensamiento, China ofrecería un espacio para pensar lo que Europa aún no ha podido siquiera concebir. Pensar la China implicaría, pues, pensar lo impensado: pensar desde tradiciones que no han teorizado sobre la 'verdad', que no han hablado del 'ser' y que parecen desconocer la figura de un 'Dios'. ¿Cómo, pues, puede originarse una reflexión sin los supuestos teóricos que, para ‘Occidente’, han resultado fundamentales? Ahora bien, leer a la China no se trata, según Jullien, de representar lo exótico y lo ajeno, sino de volver sobre las propias bases teóricas de la filosofía: ¿qué caminos han abierto Confucio, Zhuangzi o Mencio, que suponga una ruptura fundamental con lo que Europa ha denominado filo-sofía? ¿Qué posibilidades de reflexión se hallarían más allá de Aristóteles, Spinoza, o Kant? Jullien nos propone, por medio de este ‘rodeo’, interpelar radicalmente lo que la filosofía ha considerado ‘obvio’, ‘esencial’ y ‘universal’ pero que, al recurrir a otras culturas, se muestra problemático y hasta insostenible.

La conferencia del profesor Jullien está programada para el jueves 3 de octubre, de 15.30 a 17.30 en el Auditorio Julieta Kirkwood de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Chile, ubicada en Capitán Ignacio Carrera Pinto 1045, Ñuñoa. En caso de que el lugar y el horario de la conferencia fueran modificados, la coordinación del coloquio dará aviso por medio de redes sociales antes de la fecha programada.

Al igual que el resto del coloquio, esta actividad es de carácter gratuito. Adicionalmente, la conferencia será dictada en francés, por lo que se contará con la presencia de un traductor.

Mes réflexions sur le concept de philosophie interculturelle se fondent sur une distinction entre trois types de philosophies: régionale, interculturelle et mondiale. Dans ce contexte, je comprends la philosophie interculturelle comme une sphère intermédiaire, bidirectionnelle. Elle se situe premièrement entre la philosophie régionale et la philosophie mondiale, et, deuxièmement, elle est constituée par la tension dynamique entre comparatisme et critique transculturelle. Le point de départ des réflexions suivantes est le livre L’Ecart et l'entre, Leçons inaugurale de la Chaire sur l'altérité de François Jullien (Paris, Éditions Galilée, 2012). Je développe une critique immanente de ce livre qui rend compte des réflexions diverses de François Jullien sur la «problématique interculturelle».

La presente indagine si propone di studiare la nozione di “comune” rilevandone il profilo ontologico ed epistemologico emergente oltre, e preliminarmente, il suo impiego in ambito sociale. Dopo una prima parte volta ad esaminare alcuni dei significati assunti dal “comune” nel dibattito politico-giuridico contemporaneo, nella seconda se ne considerano le accezioni presenti nel corpus aristotelico. Ad alcune di tali accezioni (il “condiviso”, il “politico”, il “naturale”) il “comune” deve infatti la sua più concreta efficacia costruttiva e distruttiva nei discorsi pubblici, prospettandosi, come elemento “accomunante”, quale misura discretiva di giustizia, non fideistica né ideologica, ma semplicemente razionale, autenticamente “laica”, per le relazioni intersoggettive. 

This search intends to study the notion of “common”, by noticing the ontological and epistemological profiles that emerge beyond and before its social use. After a first part in which some conceptions of “common” in the contemporary political-juridical debate are examined, in the second part the acceptations of “common” that are present in the Aristotelian corpus are considered. To some of those acceptations (“common” as shared, “common” as political, “common” as natural) the “common” owes its most concrete constructive and destructive effectiveness in public speech, in so far that, as an unifying element, it looks like a discriminating measure of justice, neither fideistic nor ideological, but simply rational, authentically laic, for inter-subjective relations.

La ecología y las ciencias ambientales tienden a pensar los sistemas naturales sin la presencia del ser humano o con este como un elemento externo, y destructor. Emanuele Coccia, Perejaume y otros autores cuestionan esta externalidad y conciben al ser humano abierto al entorno y parte del Mundo, de la naturaleza. Así, la distancia del observador objetivo y científico desaparece, a un tiempo que, cuando se piensa un mundo producido por las plantas y abierto hacia el Sol y los astros, el sistema se abre incluso más allá del concepto Gaia e incorpora la catástrofe como un elemento natural, no antrópico, además de originario.

Michel Foucault zog sich 1978 für einige Wochen in einen Zen-Tempel am Fuß des Fuji zurück. Martin Heidegger dachte lange über das Wesen der japanischen Sprache nach. Und Roland Barthes entdeckte im „Reich der Zeichen“ das semiologische Paradies. Wie allein diese genannten Beispiele illustrieren, ist der Japonismus nicht nur ein kunsthistorisches Phänomen.
Er hat sich ebenso in der Philosophie ereignet und dort in den Jahrzehnten nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg besonders in Frankreich und Deutschland einen Höhepunkt erlebt. In Japan studierten westliche Philosophen
die Natur der Zeichen; hier sammelten sie Beweisstücke für das Ende der Geschichte; und hier fanden sie ein neues Griechenland.

Der Vergleich zwischen den antiken Griechen und den modernen Japanern zieht sich wie ein roter Faden durch den Japonismus in der Philosophie. Ausgehend von diesem Leitmotiv nimmt die Tagung die Charakteristika, die
historischen Möglichkeitsbedingungen sowie Aufstieg und Niedergang der intellektuellen Japanbegeisterung in
den Blick. Auf welche Evidenzen konnte sich die Analogie von den griechischen Japanern stützen? Warum wich
die Wahrnehmung des Landes von den gängigen Schemata des Orientalismus ab? Warum wurde Japan zur Projektionsfläche für jene postapokalyptischen, posthistorischen und postmodernen Diagnosen, die für das intellektuelle Klima in den westlichen Gesellschaften nach 1945 so charakteristisch sind? Hat Tokio Athen alsphilosophische Projektionsfläche beerbt? Welche Übereinstimmungen und welche Unterschiede lassen sich
zwischen Gräkophilie und Japonismus ausmachen? Gehört der Japonismus der Philosophen mittlerweile selbst
der Vergangenheit an?

La seguente intervista ha avuto luogo il 15 aprile 2015 a seguito della lezione magistrale “Vivre le paysage”, tenuta nell’ambito del corso di Semiotica del Visibile di Lucia Corrain, sotto l’invito di Paolo Fabbri. L’intervista si smarca dal tema portante del presente volume – il confronto tra antropologia e semiotica – per offrirci degli ottimi spunti per pensare la relazione tra l’antropologia e la filosofia.
Fedele al mandato deleuziano, il progetto filosofico di Jullien si presenta come un “pensare altrimenti”. Alla base del suo cantiere, egli pone ciò che potrebbe essere riconosciuto come l’idiosincrasia fondante dell’antropologia - l’incontro con l’altro, il depaysement del soggetto accademico, il “giro lungo”. Egli cerca di disincagliare il pensiero occidentale dai filosofemi che ne compongono l’impensato - l’“Essere”, la “Verità”, la “Libertà”, “Dio” – attraverso uno smarcamento strategico di prospettiva. Egli espone il pensiero greco all’esteriorità (non ancora “alterità”) della lingua-pensiero cinese. Da un punto di vista esteriore, la banalità dell’ovvio - il “ça va sans dire” – viene rimesso in discussione e “al lavoro”.
Vien da chiedersi, tuttavia: non è forse questo il telos dell’antropologia? Nella visione di Jullien, lo è solo in apparenza. La differenza che segna la distanza tra il filosofo e l’antropologo è che l’uno pensa mentre l’altro conosce. La connaissance è compito dell’antropologia in quanto scienza. Il suo scopo è acquisire conoscenze ulteriori attraverso un apparato epistemologico che determina, caratterizza e specifica l’altro. Essa lo inquadra, lo ordina e lo compone in un tableau. L’antropologia opera principalmente attraverso la nozione di “differenza”, concetto complementare a quel pensiero dell’identità che essenzializza le culture degli altri e le oppone in maniera fittizia ad un soggetto occidentale egemone. L’antropologia è un’impresa scientifica che “ordina e classifica definendo criteri e ranghi” (Jullien 2016, 276), cui motto sarà ‘compara e distruggi’.
Al contrario, la filosofia non mira alla conoscenza ma ad attivare delle risorse del pensiero attraverso delle sollecitazioni estranee, inquietanti. Essa non mette a tacere lo straniamento prodotto dal contatto con l’altro ma se ne lascia dis-trarre e denudare fino alle estreme conseguenze. L’antropologia, dal canto suo, non può permettersi uno spaesamento radicale, intenta com’è nella sua opera di determinazione e inquadramento. È qui che si inserisce la nozione di scarto (écart). Se l’antropologia opera attraversa la differenza, la filosofia tende ad abitare lo scarto che si apre tra un pensiero e un altro, tra la Grecia e la Cina, in questo caso, senza mai giungere ad una sintesi superiore che chiuderebbe il divario tra i due termini e porrebbe fine al dia-logo filosofico. La filosofia è un pensare altrimenti che non riposa sulle proprie categorie né si abbandona all’altro ma vive di quella tensione che domanda nuova vitalità ai filosofemi che vivevano di vita quiescente.
L’interesse di François Jullien per la Cina non è l’interessa del sinologo, fine a se stesso, ma è una strategia consapevole che esplora e sfrutta (explore et exploite) l’altro per smarcarsi dall’ovvio che guida il nostro pensiero. L’altro non viene appreso nella sua specificità; piuttosto, dalla sua messa in tensione col soggetto pensante ne scaturisce un caleidoscopio di “possibili” la cui fecondità è al di là da esaurirsi. L’antropologia, al contrario, non pensa, così come non pensa la tecnica heideggeriana. La sua consapevolezza è “insufficiente” (Ibid. 278). La domanda dell’antropologo non riguarda l’universale né l’attuale. Il pensiero di ieri, o dell’altrove, serve a Jullien per pensare oggi – per pensare l’oggi. L’antropologia, dal canto suo, rimane confinata ad uno scartabellare ottocentesco.
Non si può rimanere che perplessi di fronte ad una tale immagine stereotipata, che a malapena trova riscontro negli evoluzionisti di fine XIX secolo. Sebbene l’antropologia abbia assolto per gran parte della sua storia ad un compito di rangement scientifico e politico, allo stesso tempo non sono mancate delle estroversioni che, sì, hanno pensato, che, sì, hanno svelato l’Unheimlich in occidente. L’antropologia ha assolto ad un compito più alto non solo per la sua stessa presenza entro il campo del sapere scientifico occidentale ma, molto spesso, in maniera diretta, offrendo un’apertura inedita del nostro punto di vista. Come scrivono Michael Graeber e Giovanni Da Col (2011), nel XX secolo “concepts lifted directly from ethnographic work—words like mana, shamanism, totemism, potlatch, taboo—or those that had emerged from anthropological analysis—like magical thinking, divine kingship, kinship systems, the gift, sacrificial ideologies or cosmogonic myths—were heated topics of intellectual debate; concepts that everyone, philosophers included, had to take seriously”. La
decostruzione del concetto essenzializzante di cultura è stata una delle principali - e perigliose - imprese dell’antropologia contemporanea. Jullien si serve di questo a piene mani attribuendo, nondimeno, all’antropologia un pensiero della differenza – quindi dell’identità – che qualsiasi baccelliere alle prime armi ricuserebbe senza indugio alcuno.
Detto questo, bisogna pur riconoscere una parte di verità alla visione vagamente stereotipata di Jullien. L’antropologia, molto spesso, ha timore di innalzarsi verso i cieli maggiori della speculazione teorica intrappolato dalle “maniere eterogenee di abitare il mondo e conferirgli un senso” (Jullien 2016, 280). Grande parte delle correnti antropologiche contemporanee vivono pienamente la loro fase postmoderna dove le “grandi narrazioni” non sono possibili né auspicabili. La consapevolezza etica maturata dalla disciplina a partire dagli anni Sessanta ha neutralizzato l’effetto politicamente distruttivo – e scientificamente infondato – di alcune grandiosi costruzioni teoriche. Allo stesso tempo, ciò è risultato in un “irenismo epistemologico” (Viveiros de Castro, 2016) che ha reso la disciplina imbelle e insignificante nel panorama generale degli studi scientifici occidentali, come testimoniano alcuni dei suoi più illustri esponenti (Remotti 2015; Graeber e Da Col 2011). Che un filosofo della statura di François Jullien parli dell’antropologia culturale ignorandone – o considerando irrilevanti – gli sviluppi degli ultimi cinquant’anni, è il segno della necessità di una grande ripensamento della pratica dell’antropologia, la quale non deve limitarsi a svendere la sua metodologia etnografica al primo offerente ma deve ricominciare a pensare, senza scadere in un attivismo politico da quattro soldi o in un filosofeggiare vago e pretenzioso. A questo fine, il dialogo con le altre discipline – la conclamata trans-disciplinarità – è auspicabile quanto necessaria. Il progetto filosofico di Jullien, in questo caso, sarà un elemento ideale per “rimettere in tensione” la facoltà intellettiva dell’antropologia e, finalmente, ricominciare a pensare.

Rarissime personalità autonome – figlie di una razza in estinzione – morbosamente desiderose di sondare gli abissi, s’aggirano come lupi nella notte in un tempo che le ignora. Delle loro parole non si percepiscono che echi e sussulti. Rumori lontani. La loro diagnosi inquieta la terra.
