Galicja

The present article is a result of several years of research on the portrait of a man by the Lwów painter Marcin Jabłoński (1801–1876) acquired by the Wawel Royal Castle in 2008. The analysis of the picture focused on identifying the sitter and on his rather unusual out t. Preserved documents and consultations with specialists helped to ascertain that work most likely depicts Hipolit Hieronim Emilian Ignacy Tymkowicz Czajkowski (1805–1862), the owner of, among others, the landed estate of Dydiatycze, and from 1830 to 1846, a member of the Estates of Galicia. The sitter is depicted wearing the gala uniform for the Estates of Galicia, which consisted of a white żupan, red kontusz with navy trim, embroidered with gold, a hat, and a karabela saber with an ivory hilt decorated with a silver ornament; the epaulettes on his kontusz display the arms of Galicia and Lodomeria. An exact description of both the gala and  eld uniforms appeared in 19th-century newspapers and a publication by Bronisław Łoziński. The style and painterly technique are typical for the second quarter of the 19th century, which coincides with Jabłoński’s early and mature
periods, which leads us to suppose that the picture was painted in about 1836 or 1837. The Wawel portrait differs from the majority of the artist’s known works because of its formal character.
Research on the portrait proved to be a jumping off point for a broader discussion of some of the less well-known issues in the history of Galicia. Conducting research in museums, archives, and libraries, the authors found, scattered among various public and private collections, other portraits of members of the Estates of Galicia wearing  eld or gala uniforms. Many are being published for the  rst time in the present article. The article discusses images of Prince August Longin Lobkowicz (1797–1842), lithographed by Wenzel Pobuda (1797–1833) after drawings by Jan Józef Haar (1791–1840). The governor of Galicia and Lodomeria is depicted in the tailcoat version of the gala uniform in one portrait and in the żupan and kontusz version in the other. Other works in the group presented and discussed in the article include portraits of Ksawery Krasicki, Józef Dzierzkowski, and Aleksander Stadnicki.

In the early twentieth century, three provinces of the Austrian half of the Habsburg Empire enacted national compromises in their legislation that had elements of non-territorial autonomy provisions. Czech and German politicians in Moravia reached an agreement in 1905. In the heavily mixed Bukovina, Romanian, Ukrainian, German, Jewish and Polish representatives agreed on a new provincial constitution in 1909. Last but not least, Polish and Ukrainian nationalists compromised in spring 1914, just a few months before the outbreak of the First World War vitiated the new provisions. Even though the provisions of these agreements varied substantially, new electoral laws introducing national registers were at their heart. These were designed to ensure a fairer representation of national groups in the provincial assemblies and to keep national agitation out of electoral campaigns. The earliest compromise in Moravia went furthest in consociational power sharing. However, the national bodies within the provincial assembly had no right to tax their respective national communities, and the provisions of the provincial constitutions kept the non-nationally defined nobility as an important counterbalance. The compromises in Bukovina and Galicia, even if they categorised all inhabitants nationally, contented themselves with even less autonomous agency for the national bodies in the provincial assemblies and rather emphasised the symbolic elements of national autonomy. The non-territorial approach in all three crownlands, however, was an instrument to reorganise multi-ethnic provinces that increasingly became the model for national compromises in other Austrian provinces.

Das heute in der Westukraine gelegene Brody wurde im Zuge der Ersten Teilung Polens 1772 Teil des Habsburgerreichs und war rund 150 Jahre lang dessen nordöstlichste Grenzstadt. Nach einer anfänglichen Blüte setzte in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts ein rapider wirtschaftlicher Niedergang ein. Als Österreichs jüdischste Stadt nahm Brody eine besondere Stellung in den gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Beziehungen Galiziens ein. Diese Sonderrolle zeigt sich nicht zuletzt in außergewöhnlichen Lösungen für das ethno-konfessionelle Zusammenleben in Politik, Bildung und Alltagsleben. Reisende und Schriftsteller, wie etwa der in Brody geborene Joseph Roth, sowie ehemalige Bewohner hinterließen Beschreibungen, Erinnerungen und Bilder, die je nach Zeit und Herkunft sehr unterschiedliche Wahrnehmungen dieser Stadt aufzeigen.
Dieses Buch wurde mit fünf internationalen Preisen ausgezeichnet.

In the aftermath of the First Partition of Poland in 1772 a new border was drawn in a region that had formerly been shaped by the social and economic structures of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Studying the economic, social and political processes in three pairs of border towns situated on this very border, this project analyses the consequences of the partitions on the Austro-Polish and Austro-Russian borderlands. The towns investigated in this micro-study are Brody – Radyvyliv, Pidvoločisk – Voločisk, and Austrian Husjatyn – Russian Husjatyn. Owing to their location at the very border, they followed similar urban development patterns on the one hand. On the other, however, being part of two competing empires, the political conditions varied considerably. Our focus is on the cross-country and cross-city interaction. We look at mechanisms of border control, trading conditions, contraband, pilgrimages and deserters. The time range of this book are the roughly 150 years between the creation of the border in 1772 and its forcible disintegration in the course of the First World War.

An urban biography, Brody: A Galician Border City in the Long Nineteenth Century reconciles 150 years of the town's socioeconomic history with its cultural memory. The first comprehensive study of this city under Habsburg-Austrian rule, Börries Kuzmany advises against reading urban history solely through the national lens. Besides exploring Brody's extraordinary ethno-confessional structure—Jews, Poles, and Ukrainians—Kuzmany examines the interrelation between the city's geographical location at the imperial border, its standing as a key commercial hub in East-Central Europe, and its position as a major springboard for the dissemination of the Haskalah in Galicia and the Russian Empire. After delving into the contradictory perceptions of Brody in travelogues, fiction and memory books, Kuzmany uses contemporary and historical photographs to provide an illustrated walking tour of this now Ukrainian town.

The 3 Maja Street has an outstanding role in Rzeszów’s landscape. It
is exactly there, in the town’s western part, where in 16th and 17th Rzeszów had spilled beyond its medieval charter’s limits, that the town’s greatest architecture and art monuments have been preserved. To this day, in spite of later alternations, it is easy to discern the plans for urban space drawn up by architects hired by Rzeszów’s owners in the 17th and 18th centuries. The history of this part of Rzeszów presented in this paper is based upon rarely used archival sources. It uses the findings of data mining at State and Church archives, with the results compared with an examination of the actual urban layout and with details of preserved buildings.
The emergence of Rzeszów’s new district along the street initially called
Zamkowa – later going under various names such as e.g. Pijarska and Pańska – and known as 3 Maja Street today, was brought about by the construction of a castle to the south of the existing town. The buildings raised there, besides housing most important institutions, are salient in their own right by virtue of standing out in the town’s skyline by their scale and form. These are the belfry of the town’s most important church, St. Wojciech and St. Stanisław Parish Church – the bell tower being raised in two stages, at the close of the 17th century and in the 1730s – and the monumental complex of the Piarist College and school. In the 19th century 3 Maja Street became Rzeszów’s most prestigious area.
Nowadays 3 Maja Street is one of the most important areas of the
town, the core of the material element of its identity. The street, whose
main landmark is the Holy Cross Church and the ex-Piarist College complex, and enclosed from the north by the powerful accent of the St. Wojciech and St. Stanisław Parish Church’s belfry, is lined with buildings dating to the 19th and early 20th century, with few later additions. Taking a walk down 3 Maja Street is like taking a trip through time into the depths of Rzeszów’s history and architecture: from the town’s oldest monument, the St.Wojciech and St. Stanisław Church – whose presbytery was built in the 15th century, through the Baroque forms of the 17th century Piarist complex, modest town houses from the first half of the 19th century, through the increasingly monumental and impressive Public buildings and town houses from the Galician Autonomy Era (1867–1918), up to the Socialist Realism style cinema from the 1950s.

Abstrakt: Artykuł omawia zasady organizacji armii austro-węgierskiej po 1868 roku ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem jednostek Obrony Krajowej. Bardziej szczegółowo zajmuje się opisem sformowania 16 pułku piechoty Obrony Krajowej (16 pułk strzelców) oraz pochodzenia jego żołnierzy przed i podczas I wojny światowej. Osobny rozdział dotyczy udziału pułku w działaniach wojennych 1914–1918. Wzmiankuje także o przejściu jednostki na służbę w Wojsku Polskim. Kolejna duża część dotyczy losów oficerów jednostki podczas I wojny światowej oraz w latach 1918–1939. Artykuł omawia zasady formowania korpusu oficerskiego w armii austro-węgierskiej ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem oficerów rezerwy, czyli cywilów legitymujących się minimum maturą, którzy po przeszkoleniu mieli uzyskać najniższe stopnie oficerskie. Najważniejsze ustalenia artykułu dotyczą właśnie ich losów po zakończeniu I wojny światowej. Gros spośród oficerów pułku wstąpiło po 1918 roku do Wojska Polskiego, wykorzystując swoje umiejętności, a nierzadko oddając życie podczas walk o granice II Rzeczypospolitej. Dzięki analizie statystycznej ich losów udało się częściowo zweryfikować funkcjonujące w polskiej historiografii sądy, m.in. obalić tezę, że jednostki austro-węgierskie po 1918 roku były przekształcane w odpowiadające im terytorialnie pułki Wojska Polskiego. Analiza losów oficerów 16 pp Obrony Krajowej wykazała, że oficerowie tej jednostki, dość masowo wstępujący do Wojska Polskiego, bynajmniej nie byli kierowani jedynie do 20 pp ziemi krakowskiej, który uchodził za kontynuatora dawnej jednostki austriackiej. Owszem, stanowili oni dużą grupę oficerów polskiego pułku, jednak większość dawnych oficerów 16 pp już w 1918 i 1919 roku została rozrzucona po innych jednostkach i przydziałach. Także analiza prozopograficzna losów oficerów 16 pp w latach 1918–1939 wykazała, że nie osiągnęli oni znaczących stanowisk w Wojsku Polskim, dość szybko odchodząc ze służby i przechodząc do cywila.
Abstract: The article discusses the organization of the Austro-Hungarian army after 1868 with particular emphasis on the units of the k.k. Landwehr (Imperial-Royal Home Guard). A more detailed account has been provided of the formation of the 16th Imperial-Royal Home Guard Infantry Regiment (Landwehrinfanterieregiment), since 1917 known as the 16th Riflemen Regiment (Schützen-Regimenter), and of the background of the servicemen in its ranks before and during World War I. A separate section has been devoted to the involvement of the regiment in the warfare of 1914–1918. A brief reference has been made to how the unit came under the command of the Polish Army. In another part of the article, the lives of officers who served in the unit during World War I and in 1918–1939 have been presented at length. The text discusses how the oficer corps was formed in the Austro-Hungarian army, focusing on the reserve officers, or civilians who completed at least secondary education followed by the school-leaving exam known as the matura, earmarked for lowest-ranking officers undergoing prior military training. It is what happened to those officers after World War I that the most important findings in the article are about. The majority of them joined the Polish Army after 1918, drawing on what they had learnt and often laying down their lives in the fight for the borders of Poland at the dawn of the interwar period. A statistical analysis of those men’s biographies has permitted a revision of some of the opinions that prevailed in Polish historiography, including by disproving the argument that after 1918, Austro-Hungarian units were transformed into their territorially equivalent regiments of the Polish Army. As revealed by an analysis of the biographies of officers of the 16th Landwehrinfanterieregiment, those officers, who would join the Polish Army en masse, were not assigned only to the 20th Infantry Regiment of the Kraków Region, considered the continuator of the former Austrian unit. They were indeed numerous among the officers in that Polish regiment, but most of the former officers of the 16th Regiment were deployed to other units and got different postings already in 1918 and 1919. Furthermore, a prosopographical analysis of the careers of officers of the 16th Infantry Regiment in 1918–1939 has shown that they did not rise high in the ranks of the Polish Army but quit the service rather quickly and returned to civilian life.

The paper looks into the issue of Great War in Galicia – one of the provinces of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Galicia was inhabited by Poles, Rusyns (Ukrainians), Jews and other nationalities. Poles dominated in Western Galicia, while Ukrainians were the majority in the eastern part of the land. There was a conflict between the two nations which increased during the war. Russia was interested in capturing the eastern part of the territory. Russian army occupied Galicia in the years 1914−1915. After that, Austro-Hungarians returned and begun the policy of terror towards Galicians. Galicia was the theater of the war. People have suffered as a result of fighting, famine, epidemics and poverty. They were also sent to prisons and camps. The end of the war brought the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and rebirth of independent Poland. It is very interesting that nowadays in the collective memory of Poles, Ukrainians and other nationalities Galicia operates as a positive and sentimental myth.

Center and periphery are popular concepts to describe geographical, political, or economic power relations. Both are mostly perceived as strict and mutually exclusive categories. This article examines a Galician border town whose history illustrates the complexities of conceptualizing center and periphery relations. At first glance, nineteenth-century Brody (in today's Ukraine) would seem to qualify as a peripheral town located on the Galician border between the Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires. An analysis of this city under Habsburg rule (1772–1918), however, shows us that during that period it constituted both an important center and a declining periphery, not only consecutively, but also simultaneously. Its situation on the country's physical and political periphery did not harm Brody's central role in Europe's East-West trade until the first twenty years of the nineteenth century. Only in later decades did the city lose its place within a modernizing commercial system, and eventually it declined in importance. If we leave aside the economic aspect and take a closer look at Brody's mostly Jewish inhabitants, we see that for centuries this city functioned as an important center for Eastern and Central European Jewry. Even though the town's centrality for Jewish history also changed over time, Brody nevertheless kept its place on Jewish mental maps, whether as a center of religious learning, as a pioneering site of political emancipation, or as a safe haven for Jewish refugees.

Zawód nauczyciela galicyjskich szkół ludowych w drugiej połowie ХІХ i na początku ХХ w. rozpatrywany jest w niniejszej pracy w kontekście funkcjonowania ruchu narodowego oraz zaostrzenia stosunków polsko-ukraińskich. Nauczyciele ludowi byli zobowiązani do przyłączenia się do ruchu narodowego jako jego działacze oraz, jako najniższe ogniwo warstwy inteligenckiej, do spełniania funkcji pośrednika między intelektualną elitą kraju a szerokimi warstwami społeczeństwa. Obowiązki te stały często w sprzeczności w stosunku do zawodowej etyki nauczycielskiej, zmuszając do szukania kompromisu między celami edukacyjnymi ruchu narodowego a zawodową rzetelnością. Podejmowany przez nauczycieli wybór na korzyść obowiązków narodowych był częstą przyczyną konfliktów z administracją szkolną oraz władzami prowincji.

Pierwszy kataster gruntowy Galicji, zwany najczęściej Metryką Józefińską, stanowi niezwykle cenne źródło historyczne do dziejów społecznych i gospodarczych Galicji końca XVIII w., a także do prowadzenia różnorakich badań genealogicznych. Powstał w latach 1785-1789 i przygotowany został głównie dla celów podatkowych. Zawierał m.in. dokładne informacje dotyczące wymiaru posiadanych przez mieszkańców danych miejscowości gruntów, informacje o uzyskiwanych plonach oraz o użytkowanych nieruchomościach 1. The Kraków Uprising was the first Polish uprising which set itself the main goal of not only regaining independence, but also a profound reform of agrarian relations. The Manifesto of the insurgent authorities, which was the basic legal act of the Kraków revolution, announced that everyone would be granted the right to land and that the peasants would be given the ownership of the land they used without compensation for the manorial lords. Landless population in the countryside and other participants of the uprising were promised plots of national land, people who were poor or unable to work were promised social care. In accordance with the programme provisions of the Manifesto the following were declared: the abolition of serfdom, unconditional affranchisement of peasants who used land (without the obligation to buy it), the promise to grant plots of national land to those landless peasants who would take part in the uprising and making everybody equal in terms of political rights. Although the uprising lasted only a few days and ended in a fiasco, the decisions of the insurgent authorities were recognized in world historiography as fundamental to the development of the democratic and socially progressive doctrine in Europe. The analysis starts with the description of the legal status of the rural population in the Austrian partition, followed by the presentations of the concepts of peasant reform in the programmes of Polish political groups in exile. The author then moves on analyse the provisions of the basic legal acts reforming the legal status the peasants during the uprising. The discussion is concluded with analysis the effects of the Kraków Uprising on the issue of agrarian reform in the Russian and Austrian partitions.

Powstanie krakowskie było pierwszym polskim zrywem niepodległościowym, który stawiał sobie za główny cel poza odzyskaniem niepodległości, również głęboką reformę stosunków agrarnych. Manifest władz powstańczych, będący podstawowym aktem prawnym rewolucji krakowskiej, zapowiadał przyznanie każdemu prawa do ziemi oraz nadanie chłopom na własność gruntów przez nich użytkowanych bez odszkodowania na rzecz dziedziców. Ludności bezrolnej na wsi i innym uczestnikom powstania przyrzekano nadanie działek ziemi z dóbr narodowych, a ludziom ubogim i niezdolnym do pracy opiekę społeczną. Zgodnie z postanowieniami programowymi Manifestu deklarowano: zniesienie pańszczyzny, bezwarunkowe uwłaszczenie (bez wykupu) chłopów użytkujących ziemię, zapowiedź nadzielenia ziemią z dóbr narodowych tych bezrolnych, którzy wezmą udział w powstaniu, zrównanie wszystkich względem praw politycznych. Mimo iż powstanie trwało zaledwie kilka dni i skończyło się fiaskiem, to postanowienia władz powstańczych uznane zostały w światowej historiografii za fundamentalne dla rozwoju europejskiej doktryny demokratycznej i społecznie postępowej. W trakcie niniejszej analizy autor charakteryzuje wpierw status prawny ludności wiejskiej w zaborze austriackim w latach poprzedzających powstanie, następnie przedstawia koncepcje reform włościańskich w programach polskich ugrupowań politycznych na emigracji, zaś w dalszej kolejności dokonuje analizy postanowień podstawowych aktów prawnych reformujących status prawny chłopów w okresie powstania. Całość rozważań zamyka analiza skutków powstania krakowskiego dla sprawy reformy agrarnej w zaborze rosyjskim i zaborze austriackim.

It is rather rare to use civil law notary records as a source to survey history of country communities. The present article deals with that question in the context of population that lived in Przeworsk County in the 2nd half of the 19th c. The county population in the years 1857–1910 increased from over 28 thousands to about 56 thousands. Various aspects of Przeworsk county population’s activities are reflected in many civil law notary records. The most important matters are relations between family members (dowry, husband-wife relations, and parents-children relations), as well as economic questions (real estate and financial transactions). These questions are often touched upon in numerous contracts of sale and purchase, dowry contracts, testaments and loan contracts.

Opierając się na metodologii akcentującej narracyjny i dyskursywny wymiar historii, autor analizuje pieśni chłopskie
towarzyszące rabacji galicyjskiej (1846) oraz rewolucyjnemu
ruchowi ludowemu organizowanemu w Królestwie Polskim
przez Związek Chłopski (1842–1844). Główna teza artykułu
zakłada, że oba ruchy antyfeudalne były ze sobą powiązane
pod względem zarówno teorii, jak i praktyki, a jej źródłem
była teologia emancypacyjna księdza Piotra Ściegiennego.
Liczne przesłanki potwierdzające postawioną w ten sposób
hipotezę można znaleźć w zachowanych do dziś ludowych
pieśniach buntowniczych. Rekonstruując powiązania między twórczością chłopów zaangażowanych w oba ruchy
rewolucyjne, autor odnosi treść badanych utworów do pism
politycznych Ściegiennego. Ich relacyjna lektura dostarcza
dowodów pozwalających zakwestionować obecną w pismach
konserwatywnych historyków dewaluację warstw ludowych
jako podmiotów rewolucyjnych. Paralele, które można znaleźć we wspomnianych pieśniach rabacji i Związku Chłopskiego oraz w twórczości politycznej księdza Piotra Ściegiennego, prowadzą do wniosku, że praktyka ruchu ludowego
kojarzonego zwykle z Jakubem Szelą była głęboko zakorzeniona w teorii autora Złotej książeczki, zaś jej nadrzędnym
celem było obalenie ustroju feudalnego na terenie Galicji, a
nie – jak chce to widzieć policyjna historiografia – użyciem
przez administrację austriacką polskojęzycznych chłopów do
stłumienia szlacheckiego powstania krakowskiego (1846).

Звіти Дисциплінарних комісій Державній прокуратурі дозволяють визначити головні типи дисциплінарних порушень, проаналізувати форми покарання та з’ясувати обставини, в яких адвокат переступав межі дозволеного у своїй професійній діяльності.

Ks. Mieczysław Kuznowicz (1874-1945), jezuita, od początków XX wieku prowadził rozległą działalność pomocową i wychowawczą w środowisku galicyjskich terminatorów i czeladników, ukierunkowaną na młodzież zagrożoną marginalizacją z powodu ubóstwa, niezaradności oraz deficytu troski wychowawczej. Analizując poglądy pedagogiczne wyrażane w licznych pismach, wielotorową działalność założonego przez niego Związku oraz dostępne opracowania zagadnienia artykuł prezentuje cele i metody wychowawcze stosowane przez jezuitę. Związek, w koncepcji ks. Kuznowicza, był dla młodych rzemieślników optymalnym środowiskiem wychowawczym, które wspierało ich harmonijny i wszechstronny rozwój osobowy, zgodny z duchem chrześcijańskim i w oparciu o zasadę samorządności. Zaangażowanie w działalność Związku pozwalała wychowankom na odkrywanie i rozwijanie osobistych zainteresowań i uzdolnień, na twórczy udział w kulturze, na formowanie chrześcijańskich i obywatelskich postaw współodpowiedzialności.

Researched archival materials of the Wojskowe Biuro Historyczne and Archiwum
Akt Nowych have uncovered a  lot of new, previously unknown information about
the organization of the Polish army during the November 1918 confl icts in Lviv. This
demonstrates that although new books are published on the topic every year, it remains
of signifi cant interest to historians. The researched materials describe the process of
training of paramilitary units and their transformation into regular military units. The
process of creating the army was shown, not from the perspective of participation
in combat, but from the organizational side of the basics of service; mobilization,
education, supply, armament, and the fi nancial side of the service of a  Polish Army
soldier

Po przejściowym kryzysie, jaki nastąpił w lwowskim środowisku kulturalnym pod koniec XVIII wieku, na początku kolejnego stulecia pozycja tego ośrodka zaczęła się odbudowywać, nawet pomimo licznych trudności natury przede wszystkim finansowo-organizacyjnej. Ostatecznie, jak wykazały kwerendy w zasobach instytucji muzealnych, materiałach archiwalnych, opracowaniach naukowych oraz publikacjach prasowych z epoki, w okresie od 1795 roku do mniej więcej połowy XIX stulecia w mieście aktywnych było ponad 150 malarzy i grafików. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi przegląd wybranych zagadnień związanych z uwarunkowaniami rozwoju lwowskiego malarstwa oraz twórczością głównych aktywnych tam artystów. Jednym z najistotniejszych czynników wpływających na kształtowanie się stylistyki sztuki lwowskiej były bliskie związki ze środowiskiem wiedeńskim, wynikające z jednej strony z wyjazdów miejscowych malarzy na studia w Akademii Wiedeńskiej, z drugiej – z licznych przyjazdów do stolicy Galicji twórców pochodzących z Austrii lub innych regionów cesarstwa Habsburgów. To właśnie konwencje importowane stały się przyczyną, dla której we Lwowie rozwinął tak „czysty” biedermeier, co stanowi o unikatowości tego ośrodka na tle ówczesnej polskiej sztuki, w której w I połowie XIX wieku zasadniczo dominowały tendencje romantyczne i klasyczno-akademickich.

After the temporary crisis that occurred in the Lviv cultural milieu by the end of the 18th century, at the beginning of the next era, the position of this artistic center began to rebuild, even despite numerous difficulties of a financial and organizational nature. Ultimately, as shown by query in the resources of museum institutions, archival materials, scientific studies and press publications from that time, in the period from 1795 to about the mid-nineteenth century, over 150 painters and graphic artists were active in the city. The aim of this article is to review selected issues related to the conditions for the development of Lviv painting and the work of the main artists active there. One of the most important factors influencing the shaping of the style of Lviv art were close ties with the Viennese milieu. On the one hand, they resulted from the trips of local painters to study at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, and on the other - from the numerous visits to the capital of Galicia of artists from Austria or other regions of the Habsburg Empire. Imported conventions were the reason why such a "pure" Biedermeier developed in Lviv, which makes this center unique in the context of Polish art at that time, when romantic and classical-academic tendencies basically dominated.

Najbardziej widoczne były represje władz skierowane wobec działających na rzecz odzyskania niepodległości. Niemniej to właśnie problemy życia codziennego dotykały w największym stopniu mieszkańców ziem dawnej Rzeczpospolitej. Jednym z nich była korupcja. Miała ona różny charakter w poszczególnych zaborach, będąc jednocześnie uciążliwą i pomocną w kontakcie z przedstawicielem administracji zaborczej. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie powyższego zagadnienia.
