Galli Bibiena

La produzione superstite di Dallamano negli Stati estensi si mostra di cospicuo interesse non solo perché documenta un vertice qualitativo, se non addirittura il vertice stesso, della quadraturistica modenese tra Sei e Settecento, ma anche perché esprime con evidenza un particolare frangente della decorazione prospettica nel ducato estense e nell'area piemontese; è quell’assoluta ridondanza di elementi ornamentali, come cartelle, mensole, festoni, volute arboree, rosoni…, che mortifica e ottunde il dettato architettonico della quadratura stessa, che va perdendo la “sodezza” peculiare e la chiarezza sintattica propria della scuola bolognese. E’ un differente orientamento del gusto estetico ben testimoniato, ad esempio, dai soffitti di Palazzo Galliani Coccapani a Modena, che si allontanano dalla verosimiglianza architettonica quanto più concedono alle divagazioni degli elementi ornativi, dettati da un capriccioso decorativismo. Nel mentre, le forme architettoniche si vanno sempre più ibridando rispetto al canone cinquecentesco codificato dalla trattatistica, sino ai più recenti Paradossi di Giulio Troili, le cui pagine danno conto del percorso quadraturistico attuato dai maestri bolognesi, da Girolamo Curti, Colonna e Mitelli, agli stessi Bibiena. E’ quel “progressivo abbandono di un coerente discorso architettonico” che fu, secondo Anna Maria Matteucci, una delle probabili cause dell’allontanamento dalla quadratura di uno dei suoi maggiori protagonisti, Gian Giacomo Monti, che nell’ultima fase della sua operosità si sarebbe riservato il prevalente ruolo di architetto. E’ in questa evoluzione che si collocano le trame architettoniche di Giuseppe Dallamano di improbabile “materializzazione”, inverosimili, stranianti: ai sorprendenti effetti di sfondamento prospettico, corrispondono complicati congegni dalla morfologia bizzarra, che si apparentano, piuttosto, all’universo visionario delle effimere “macchine” barocche. Proprio in tale estro, dai tratti “saturnini”, risiede la peculiarità e il fascino delle creazioni dell’artista, anche rispetto alla scuola bolognese, alla cui matrice pure appartengono.

On March 13th, 1686, in the occasion of the celebrations for Francis II of Este’s birthday, the musical drama Eritrea inaugurated a small court theatre, built to the East of the west tower of the Ducal Palace. The building issue of this lost structure is attested by a wide docu-mentation, which reveals the names of some important makers, di-rected by the court painter Francesco Stringa, the ducal factories overseer. Next to Modena and Reggio Emilia artists such as Sigis-mondo Caula, Flaminio Veratti, Agostino Stringa, Jacopino Consetti, Tommaso Costa, and to the Flemish artist Pietro Senau, some well-known “stage technicians”, decorators and set designers from Bolonia are present, indicated to Stringa by his friend Gian Giacomo Monti: Francesco Bibiena, Tommaso Aldrovandini and Marc’Antonio Chia-rini, among the others. What is more, the organisation of a small but eager Este’s building site is defined, while the unknown facies, struc-tural and decorative, of the theatre resurfaces is defined. And the competition which took place at the end of these celebrations, called Sfida al Campo della Maga Circe (Challenge to the enchantress Circe’s field), shows the prestigious role of the Accademia dei Disso-nanti in the court culture.

The Portuguese Eighteenth Century was one of the most interesting periods in terms of architectonic construction and import of new ideas. The possibility offered by the richness of the West Indies has allowed the engagement of
several artists by the Portuguese Crown. Those artists became the link between Portugal cultural environment and those new ideas.
Reflection of these new cultural tendencies was the education of the Portuguese princes in the first half of the 18th century, during the reign of João V. The taste for music was strongly increased. With the ascent to the throne of his son, José I of Portugal in 1750, the desire for the Italian opera materializes in the construction of an Italian opera house, similar to those existent in some of the most important European capitals. The invitation for a Galli Bibiena
architect appears within this context. He is seen as a heir of one of the most famous families of theatre architects and stage set designers of all 18th century, for the Galli Bibiena family had worked in the main courts of Europe
with great recognition.
Referred as one of the most beautiful, sumptuous and luxurious opera houses, it had the missfortune of being destroyed by the Lisbon Earthquake (1st November 1755). Even though this ephemeral existence of seven months, it has remained in the collective memory of Lisbon, and it is considered as one of the great theatres ever created by the Galli Bibiena’s.
The object of the present work is the Lisbon Royal Opera House of Tagus, projected in 1752 by the Italian architect Giovanni Carlo Sicinio Galli Bibiena, inaugurated on the 31st of March of 1755, and has been destroyed at the 1st of November that same year.
We aim to: know better the familiar context and the academic and professional path of the architect Giovanni Carlo Sicinio, circumscribed to its architectonic culture; construct a unified vision of the Historiography of the Opera House of Tagus; elaborate a representative model of how could have been the theatre.
Methodology: reunite the information, followed by subsequent thematic classification by specimen, and further cataloguing; make a comparative analysis of some aspects of the opera house, such as: the geometry, the perspective; the conceptual, morphological, structural, architectonical, ornamental and constructive details, as well as the legislative and descriptive aspects.
As results, it was possible to: create an enhanced vision of the Italian and the Portuguese life periods of Giovanni Carlo Sicinio, meanly in relation to its familiar surroundings, academic path and different professional scopes; create a historiography about the Lisbon Royal Opera House of Tagus and a study on the constructed and the imagined theatre; elaborate a 3D model, concerning the structural, architectonical and ornamental aspects of what could have been the theatre.
Finally, this work has contributed to: determine the relation between the architectonic, decorative and conceptual aspects in the work of the Italian architect; the documental compilation of stories, news and studies related to the opera house; enlarging the present historiography and the constructed vision of the theatre; identifiing and attributing to Giovanni Carlo Sicinio new drawings of stage set design and drawings of the theatre. And, finaly, a graphical and descriptive interpretation of what could have been the Opera House of Tagus.

Among the main undertakings of Francesco I, the Teatro Ducale Grande, destined to musical drama, satisfied a vital need for the social life of a city home to a royal court. Created by the d’Este architect Gaspare Vigarani by enlarging the 13th-century Sala della Ragione ‒ a grandiose construction inside the buildings of the municipality on which new light is shed by documents that have emerged – the theatre opened its curtains in the spring of 1656, the start of a sparkling yet short-lived period up to 1658, the year of death of the Duke: “Non miraro i Teatri opre maggiori / Di quelle, ch’innalzò sù queste arene / Il gran Francesco, ne di feste, ò Scene (...) Macchine immense onde ciascun stupì.” And while shows continued in the Teatro Valentini “for comedies” on the Via Emilia, it would not be until 1674 that musical dramas were staged once more in the Dukedom, under the drive of the theatre-lover Francesco II. Proposals soon followed from impresarios such as Leone Parisetti and Antonio Cottini; famous sopranos and acclaimed virtuosos performed in shows often from Venice, the central hub of musical theatre. The detailed in-ventories of scenery, machinery and devices for the performance of the Germanico sul Reno with music by Legrenzi, in November 1677, spon-sored by the Marquis Decio Fontanelli, made it possible to cast a gaze not only ‘behind the scenes’, but also over the perspective telescope of ‘canvases’ and ‘horizons’, as well as below the stage, where a great cen-tral winch allowed for simultaneous changes of scenery.
Tra le maggiori imprese di Francesco I, il Teatro Ducale Grande destinato al dramma in musica rispondeva a un’esigenza imprescindibile per la vita sociale di una città sede di corte. Ricavato dall’architetto estense Gaspare Vigarani ampliando la duecentesca Sala della Ragione ‒ un grandioso cantiere all’interno dei palazzi comunali sul quale documenti gettano nuova luce ‒ il teatro apre il suo sipario nella primavera del
1656, per un brillante ma breve periodo sino al 1658, anno di morte del duca: «Non miraro i Teatri opre maggiori / Di quelle, ch’innalzò sù queste arene / Il gran Francesco, ne di feste, ò Scene (...) Macchine immense onde ciascun stupì». E mentre proseguono gli spettacoli nel Teatro Valentini «delle commedie» sulla via Emilia, si dovrà attendere il 1674 perché nel Ducale si riallestiscano drammi in musica, sotto
l’impulso del melomane Francesco II. Si susseguono le proposte di impresari come Leone Parisetti e Antonio Cottini; si esibiscono rinomati sopranisti e acclamate «virtuose» in spettacoli spesso provenienti da Venezia, polo d’irradiazione dell’opera in musica. I dettagliati inventari di scene, macchine e congegni stilati per la mise en scéne del Germanico sul Reno su musiche di Legrenzi, nel novembre del 1677, impresario il marchese Decio Fontanelli, permettono di gettare uno sguardo non solo «dietro le quinte», ma al di sopra del cannocchiale prospettico di «teloni» e «orizzonti», e sotto il palco dove un grande argano centrale consentiva il cambio di scena simultaneo.

Verso il 1755 il marchese Alessandro Frosini, maggiordomo maggiore di Francesco III d'Este, commissiona al celebre architetto imolese Alfonso Torreggiani la progettazione dello scalone nel suo palazzo di Modena, non lontano dalla dimora ducale. Oltre che per questo episodio, tra i più raffinati del gusto rococò nella capitale estense, destinato a influenzare altre realizzazioni architettoniche cittadine, il palazzo si qualifica anche per il superbo atrio dai busti marmorei, con la cancellata del noto fabbro ducale Giambattista Malagoli; inoltre arricchiva il cortile una prospettiva dipinta da Antonio Galli Bibiena nel maggio del 1759, ora scomparsa. In quel giro d'anni, il pittore modenese Francesco Vellani, brillante interprete di un barocchetto veneteggiante, decorava la volta del salone del palazzo con l'Olimpo, al centro del quale campeggia lo stemma dei Frosini.

O presente artigo reúne algumas informações sobre a actividade em Lisboa, nos três anos que antecederam o terramoto de 1755, de Paolo Dardani, um jovem pintor bolonhês que integrou o grupo de artistas contratados por Giovanni Carlo Sicinio Galli Bibiena para o ajudarem na tarefa de dotar a corte portuguesa com novos teatros de ópera e respectivas cenografias.
Regressado a Bolonha em meados de 1755, Dardani levou consigo um caderno com desenhos de vistas de Lisboa, que reproduziu num palácio da vila italiana de Cento, e memórias fantasiosas da sua estadia em Portugal, entre as quais uma cena de caça da à baleia no rio Tejo, que registou numa tela pintada em Bolonha. Estas obras desapareceram, delas restando apenas o relato manuscrito de Marcelo Oretti, um conhecido biógrafo dos artistas bolonheses, que se baseou em informações fornecidas pelo próprio artista. Mesmo em Itália, pouco mais resta da obra de Dardani, além de algumas gravuras, um óleo em Parma e quatro desenhos, comprovadamente de sua autoria, no Museu Davia Bargellini de Bolonha.
Segundo Oretti, nos três anos em que permaneceu em Lisboa Dardani executou várias telas com batalhas e paisagens para diversos encomendadores. Encontrámos em colecções portuguesas quatro telas com estas temáticas, apresentando traços estilísticos comuns com as obras conhecidas do artista, que poderão ser tudo o que resta da sua actividade em terras portuguesas entre 1752 e 1755.

The relationship between reality and representation have made the drawing one of the best sources of historical research on architecture and city. In the search for visual clues such as admissible evidence for the study of the urban history often emerge drawings that do not portray the existing or existed spaces but represent the qualities of an urban metaphysics reality, imaginary, or often foreshadowed.
It is the iconography of the possible city, able to evoke not only a real space but also to direct the taste of an era. This paper presents the results of a research carried out on urban and architectural representations produced by artists of the Galli Bibiena family and built on geometric-analytical bases.
Through rigorous analysis and geometric restitution of perspective it is revealed in virtual models the spirit of the eighteenth-century urban ideal, beautifully outlined in the whims and fantastic compositions of only drawn cities and architectures.

From the 1680s onwards, Ferdinando Galli Bibiena (1657– 1743) revolutionized the art of stage design by experimenting with a so-called “manner of seeing scenes from an angle”. The scena per angolo substituted the traditional, single-point perspective with two distance points and worm’s-eye views that rendered architectures in more monumental fashion than ever before. At the same time, the new system’s reliance on backdrops and wings that were placed irregularly, instead of symmetrically, restricted the illusionary compass of perspective to enclosed spaces, rather than “infinite” vistas. It reduced the theater’s optical scope by limiting itself to horizontal slices of earthly reality, devoid of the celestial and infernal.
Especially noteworthy is the fact that vertical descents, especially of dei ex machina, could only be implemented in Bibiena’s schemes at the cost of upsetting vertical proportions. Not that this defect complicated stagings of contemporary Italian opera. Quite the contrary: opera seria’s poetics of verisimilitude chimed perfectly with the phenomenal breadth of two-point perspective. Yet, operatic genres hinging on the marvelous through the deployment of machinery, most notably the tragédie en musique and the various forms of feste, held on to central perspective so as to allow divine descents. Evidence for this intriguing development can be gleaned from a rich array of visual and textual sources.

Nel presente testo vengono trascritte e commentate sei lettere ricevute o inviate da Giovanni Carlo Sicinio Galli Bibiena, e conservate nell’archivio della famiglia Malvasia a Passo Segni presso Baricella (BO), le quali contengono informazioni inedite riguardanti il percorso artistico di quell’architetto ed «ingegnere teatrale», nonché accademico clementino, figlio di Francesco e nipote di Ferdinando Bibiana. In tre di queste lettere, indirizzate nel 1750 da Bologna al conte Cesare Alberto Malvasia, suo protettore in città, si racconta la sorda guerra che si era verificata dietro le quinte al momento dell'assegnazione del progetto per il nuovo Teatro Comunale, nel quale Giovanni Carlo si era confrontato con un altro giovane candidato, Paolo Dotti, egli pure figlio di un noto architetto di quel tempo, Carlo Francesco. Emerge anche un’altra notizia interessante, fino ad ora sconosciuta ai più: 1a partecipazione dell’architetto bolognese Giuseppe Antonio Landi nella costruzione della chiesa dei Francescani a Cesena, lavoro nel quale, a dire il vero, Giovanni Carlo Sicinio Galli Bibiena voleva succedere al suo collega accademico, il quale era in partenza per il Brasile al servizio del re di Portogallo. Due anni dopo, scaduta l'ipotesi del Teatro Comunale, fu proprio Bibiena a seguire lo stesso percorso verso il Portogallo, dove nel 1760 divenne architetto reale, pochi giorni prima di morire all'improvviso, all’età di soli 43 anni. A Lisbona egli non si era dimenticato del suo mecenate, come dimostrano altre due lettere: nella prima, del 1752, Giovanni Carlo descrive al Malvasia la frenesia con la quale era stato accolto in Portogallo per dare inizio alla costruzione dei teatri regi, e nella seconda, del 1757, gli invia un parere sul palazzo di via San Donato, a Bologna, attuale via Zamboni, che il nobiluomo allora adottò come sua principale residenza.

The work object of this study is the Lisbon Royal Opera House of Tagus, conceived by the Italian architect Giovanni Carlo Sicinio Galli Bibiena, inaugurated on the 31st of March of 1755, and destroyed at the 1st of November earthquake on that same year.
Unique case in the Portuguese panorama of theatre buildings, this was the result of a policy initiated exclusively with José I of Portugal, in order to materialize the taste for Italian opera in Portugal.

With this work, the objectives we set out to achieve were to build a unifying vision of the historiography of the Tagus Opera; to draw up a representative three-dimensional model of the theatre as it may have been built, through the use of contemporary digital tools; and finally to propose a work methodology for studies of historic buildings of which is known little or no information.
As a result, we generated a historiography of the Opera House of Tagus and a study on how this theatre may have been designed and built. From this, we were able to create a three-dimensional model of what the theatre might have been according to our analysis, covering structural, architectural and ornamental aspects.

Finally, this work contributed to a broadening of the historiographical view of the theatre, through the identification of proportional and eventually stylistic relations between this project and the project by Francesco Bibiena for the Nancy Royal Opera House (1704). It also contributed to a renewed graphical and descriptive interpretation of what could have been the Opera House of Tagus, as well as a more concrete methodology proposal for this type of work.

Este artículo pretende hacer una l1istoriografia de la iglesia de Nossa Senhora do Livramento e São José, también conocida como iglesia de la Memória, añadiendo nuevas lecturas realizadas a cuando de la disenación de tesis doctoral. En especial su posible conexión en términos arquìtectónicos y decorativos con el Teatro real de la Ópera del Taio.

The Pierpont Morgan Library in New York keeps an album of 241 drawings concerning architecture, quadratura and stage design which is important for its extraordinary number of sheets, their quality and great conservation. It should be referred to Giuseppe Tonelli (1668-1732) a Florentine quadratura painter with a Bolognese background, as shown in many of these drawings which can be related to Bibiena's. The comparison between the Morgan's album and the four albums by his hand kept in Uffizi leave no doubt about the attribution. The presence of some drawings after Andrea Pozzo highlights on the last phase of his career.

Em Maio de 1743, D. João V é acometido de uma hemiplegiam. Em conse- quência desencadeia-se um processo de sucessivas restrições a quase todos os tipos de entretenimento na corte e nos teatros. As únicas excepções são as cerimónias litúrgicas. Um pouco antes, em 1736, a princesa Mariana Vitória de Borbón escreve à sua mãe Isabel Farnésio, rainha de Espanha, queixando-se da sua melancolia pelos sucessivos e largos períodos de luto da corte, sendo as classes de música o seu único escapem. Em 1743, a jovem princesa volta a relatar a quase inexis- tência de divertimentos devido à doença do rei. No entanto, deixa transparecer nessa mesma carta o desejo que, com o seu marido como rei, se possa proceder a uma mudança de politica cultural, pois D. José não aprecia tanto a Patriarcal como seu paím. Em 1750 D. João V morre, deixando em aberto um vazio em termos de políti- ca cultural, de culto à personalidade e de afirmação exterior do Reino. A referência a Roma e à figura do Papa, tão fundamentais para o “Magnânimo”, vão ser postas em causa pelo jovem monarca, que percebe a oportunidade de se emancipar da figura paterna através de uma mudança de política e de referentes. Mudança que era apoiada por grande parte da corte, dos comerciantes estrangeiros residentes em Lisboa e pelos empresários teatrais.

A pesar de que no hemos tenido conocimiento de ningún estudio concreto sobre la relación de Giovanni Carlo Sicinio con la ciudad de Bolonia, a parie de sus intervenciones arquitectónicas y picióricas, pensamos que tal relación se podría haber manifestado en su obra. En este articulo enfocaremos algunas de sus posibles infuencias, como la realización de la tradicional fiesta de la Porchefia en agosto, que constaba de un moniaie escenogrófivo en la Piazza Maggiore, hasta las sugerencias proporcionadas por las calles porücadas de la ciudad podrían constituir posibles llaves para desvelar la obra de Sicinio. Así como, las poienciales influencias visuales en los recorridos cofidianos casa - academia, con pasaie acaso ol:›ligatorio por el palacio Davia Bargellini di Strada Maggiore.

Known as one of the most important families of architects and stage designers of the eighteenth century, the Galli Bibiena family worked for the main European courts, where they earned international notoriety. This paper aims to present a series of analyses made between the Nancy Royal Opera House (1709) and the Lisbon Royal Opera House of Tagus (1755), to deepen the current knowledge of these two buildings, regarding their use of proportion and a set of elements in the formation of a common morphological iconography, towards a methodology for the obtaining and validation of buildings’ 3D reconstruction proposals.

The Tagus Opera House is referred as one of the most beautiful, sumptuous and luxurious opera houses, it had the misfortune of being destroyed by the Lisbon Earthquake. To analyze the two projects attributed to the Tagus Opera House on the scopes of: iconography; dimensional, morphology, structural, constructive, architectonic, decorative, stage set design, stage set machinery, as well as operatic, according them on their cultural, political, social and historical context, in order to elaborate a representative model of what it could be the Build theatre and its nearby surroundings. We also aim with this research project to be able to reconstruct virtually the theatre as well as make a scale model of it. Este artigo pretende revelar a importância do Teatro do Salõo dos Embaixadores do Torreöo do Forte (ou Teatro do Forte) e do seu autor (o arquitecto Giovanni Carlo Sicinio Galli Bibiena) no panorama operistico português, por se tratar do primeiro teatro real a italiana construído em Portugal.

Conosciuta come una delle famiglie piu importanti di architetti e scenografi del diciottesimo secolo, la famiglia Galli Bibiena ha lavorato per le principali corti europee, dove hanno guadagnato notorieta internazionale. Questo lavoro si propone di presentare una serie di analisi fatte tra l'Opera di Nancy (1709) e l'Opera del Tago (1755), per approfondire l'attuale conoscenza di questi due edifici, per quanto riguarda il loro uso delle proporzioni e un insieme di elementi nella formazione di un'iconografia morfologica comune, verso una metodologia per l'ottenimento e la convalida delle proposte di ricostruzione 3D degli edifici. A vida e a obra do arquifecfo bolonhês Giovanni Carlo Sicinio Galli Bibiena (l 7l7-1760) foram marcadas por momentos disfinios, 'ranfo a nivel pessoal, como a nível da obra consfruida. Nascido no inferior de uma das mais afamadas famílias de arquifecfos cenógrafos bolonheses e ifalianosl, fez a sua formação na Accademia Clementina de Bolonha, onde o seu pai Francesco Bibiena (ló59-1739), o seu fio Ferdinando Bibiena (ló57-l743) e o seu primo Giuseppe Galli Bibiena (ió95-1757) eram professores. Maisiarde foi também professor na mesmo Academia. Em Termos profissionais Trabalhou em Arquifecfura Civil, Religiosa e Teafral, para além de ter elaborado cenografias em Bolonha, Verona, Brescia e Cremona. Em l752 entra ao serviço de D. José I (1750-1777), momenfo que represenfou uma enorme mudança culiural, pessoal e profissional?

The Lulliste-Ramiste dispute has largely been viewed from the perspective of
Rameau’s opponents – hardly surprisingly, since the Lullistes, who were probably more vociferous than they were numerous, were prone to express themselves in colourful terms. Much has been made of the wicked visual lampoons and satirical poems, many of them attacking Rameau’s person as much as his music.
Yet little testimony has survived from the composer’s ever-growing band of
supporters, the Ramistes or Ramoneurs (chimney sweeps: a pejorative term now faunted as a proud emblem). Francesca Pagani’s essay helps to
restore the balance. Signifcantly, the pro-Rameau eulogy on which she focuses comes from the pen of someone of Italian ancestry and with current connections with Italian opera and drama. To such a person, many elements of Rameau’s style – above all, its powerful harmonic palette – would not have seemed as unfamiliar as they did to those largely insulated from direct Italian infuence.
Interestingly, this quasi-outsider could recognise that, for all the rebarbative
impact of Rameau’s idiom, the composer aimed to introduce such innovations in order to enhance the French operatic tradition rather than to break with it.

Appertenente a una famiglia di scenografi e architetti - tali il fratello Paolo e il figlio Pietro - Tommaso Bezzi (Venezia, 1652 ca. - Modena, 1729) fu progettista di teatri e di scene in ambito veneziano, passato poi al servizio dei duchi d'Este. Dapprima operoso per Francesco II, attivo per il Teatro Fontanelli di Modena, legò il suo nome agli straordinari festeggiamenti per il battesimo del figlio del duca Rinaldo, il futuro Francesco III, tenutisi in Modena nel febbraio del 1700. In occasione degli studi sul Settecento Estense, del 1982, è emersa una serie di incisioni di Ludovico Mattioli e di Francesco Maria Francia per i tipi dei Soliani che riproducono le creazioni di Tommaso Bezzi per il ducale battesimo: l'Anfiteatro per L'Armeggiamento a cavallo introdotto dalla Gloria e dal Tempo, con le sontuose macchine, l'apparato eretto nel Salone del Palazzo Ducale per la rappresentazione di un balletto con le macchine di Bradamante e Armida, una scenografia per La nascita di Alcide nel Teatro Fontanelli e il ricco apparato del Duomo di Modena, oltre alla macchina funeraria eretta per il principe Clemente Giovan Federico d'Este nella chiesa dei gesuiti, San Bartolomeo. Si sono rinvenuti anche documenti relativi alla sistemazione della zona presbiteriale della chiesa di San Vincenzo, dei teatini, sempre su progettazione di Tommaso Bezzi. Ne emerge lo stretto rapporto fra la cultura del ducato modenese e l'ambiente veneziano, in particolare per la produzione legata ai teatri e alla scenografia.
