On the questions of the Mukachevo diocese origins and its connections with the Kyivan Metropolitanate (from the middle XV to the end of XVII centuries)
Annotation: In 1466, long before the first mention of the Mukachevo diocese of Byzantine Rite in 1491, Pope Paul II attested that its terrains were a part of the Halych diocese ruled by bishop Makary. The elites of the Polish Crown turned him away from Halych, but he still led the southern part of his diocese in the Hungarian Kingdom. Makary’s successors accepted the title „the bishop of Mukachevo”. Still, bishops of this Bishopric See traditionally came from the Kyivan Metropolitanate and, even simultaneously with Mukachevo, ruled other dioceses of the Metropolitanate. After the Mukachevo diocese, commonly with dioceses of Lviv and Przemyśl, denied the Brest union in 1596, the bishops of Mukachevo Amfiloch and Sergiusz also ruled parts of the Pinsk–Turov and Lutsk–Ostroh dioceses. Supposedly, the bishop of Mukachevo Petroniusz, the next after Sergiusz, originated from the Volhynia region. His successor, John Hryhorovych, precisely originated from the Volhynia. He was in close contact with the Kyivan Metropolitan Joseph Velamin Rutski. The Mukachevo bishops of 1633–1665, Vasyl Tarasovych and Parteniusz Petrovych originated from the Kulczycki noble family from the Ruthenian Voivodeship of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Both accepted the Union with the Rome. Parteniusz passed away in 1665. Thus, the Orthodox and Uniate Kyivan Metropolitanates’ candidates Josyf Woloszynowski, John Malachowski and Porfirij Kulczycki expected to possess the Mukachevo diocese with the help of Polish Kings. By the way, the Esztergom Archbishops and Eger bishops tried to control the Mukachevo diocese with the help of the Habsburgs. The struggle resulted in significant degradation of the diocese. It was paused temporarily only after the appointment of the Mukachevo bishop Joseph de Camillis, previous general procurator of the Kyivan Metropolitanate in Rome. Still, the struggle for the existence of the diocese continued until the Kyivan Metropolitanate helped its historical part win the status of a full-scale Eastern Catholic diocese in 1771.

The author analyses the context, meaning, and symbolism of the bishop of Peremyshl Innokentii Wynnyckyi's consecration by the bishop of Lviv Yosyf Shumlyanskyi, commonly with the bishop of Mukachevo Yosyf Woloshynowsky and with support of the archimandrite of Univ Barlaam Sheptytsky in Halych (Krylos) Cathedral in 1680. Historian examines the event with a reckon in it gathered members of two antagonistic groups of the Orthodox Church who struggled with each other for a decade, then reconciled and acted together as a group of the "New Union" in their way to the Kyivan Uniate Metropolitanate. Volodymyr Moroz explains the importance of this common act in light of the thorough reconstruction and investigation of previous competitions between groups of bishop Antonii Wynnyckyi and bishop Yosyf Shumlyanskyi for the Diocese of Lviv and the Kyivan Metropolitanate. In this struggle, the two opposite camps progressively lost their radicalism but accepted the possibility of moving to the Church union. The author discovers and describes the roles and positions of Wynnyckyi's and Shumlyanskyi's groups' prominent participants. He explored that Innokentii Wynnyckyi's co-consecrator Yosyf Woloshynowsky was previously consecrated by Jeremiah Swystelnyckyi, not by Yosyf Shumlyanskyi. Consequently, like Swystelnyckyi, Woloshynowsky was a Wynnyckyi's comrade, and he represented Wynnyckyi's group during the consecration of Innokentii Wynnyckyi.
Nevertheless, after Antonii Wynnyckyi passed away, Yosyf Shumlyanskyi united two opposite Orthodox groups on the way to the Kyivan Uniate Metropolitanate. Innokentii Wynnyckyi promised to become the Uniate bishop already before the consecration. On this basement, the "New Union" group started a complex dialogue with the Kyivan Uniate Metropolitanate, the Roman Apostolic See, and the Polish king John III Sobieski. The king assisted this process; the Apostolic See discussed the mode of accepting Shumlyanskyi while denying Wynnyckyi, and the Kyivan Metropolitanate looked for acceptable compromises. In addition, the Kyivan Metropolitanate beware some intrigues of Shumlyanskyi, while he claimed to be a Kyivan Orthodox metropolitan and later tried to create an autonomous Halych Metropolitanate. When these discussions were in full swing, Shumlyanskyi and his comrades solemnly consecrated Wynnyckyi as a bishop of Peremyshl. This act in the ancient Cathedral of Halych declared the active and independent position of the "New Union" camp. It showed its firm intention to unite with the Kyivan Uniate Metropolitanate in some best conditions. However, they did not create the Halych Metropolitanate in the last quarter of the XVII century; there were representatives of the next generation of the "New Union" who became the Kyivan Uniate Metropolitans.

У статті розглядається питання щодо можливості заснування францисканської місії в Галичі, одному зі
столичних центрів держави Романовичів ХІІІ ст. Окреслена проблематика доволі опосередковано представлена
в історіографії, а також мало відображена тогочасними джерелами. Водночас міноритська історична
традиція, оперта на некритичне прочитання джерел, датує появу Братів Менших у Галичі 1238 роком,
пов’язуючи фундацію конвенту з особою краківського князя Болеслава Сором’язливого. Ряд інших
францисканських легенд про прибуття міноритів на Русь загалом і до Львова зокрема, також визначають
ХІІІ ст., як час започаткування тут місіонерської праці. Аналізуючи політико-релігійні обставини упродовж
ХІІІ ст., слід відзначити, що попри активність і сталість контактів різних правлячих князівських і королівських
династій в Галичі з Римською курією, все ж пряме підтвердження про функціонування саме францисканської
місії тут відсутні. Водночас соціально-економічні, культурні та політико-релігійні зв’язки середньовічного
Галича із країнами латинської Європи добре представлені, як у письмових, так і в археологічних джерелах.
Відтак, цілком ймовірно, що в столичному центрі Галицької землі існували окремі місійні осередки для адептів
латинського обряду. Головно серед таких слід виокремити купців, групи міщан (можливо німецька громада),
наймане рицарство, котрі потребували духовної опіки Католицької Церкви. Не виключено, що у ХІІІ ст. поряд з
іншим місійним духовенством, до цього процесу були долучені також францисканці.

The dissertation is devoted to the research on the image of the Cumans (also
known as Polovtsy in Slavic tradition) formed in Polish sources of the XIth
–XVth centuries. All recorded mentions of the Cumans in Polish sources of the XIth
–XVth centuries are collected and analysed. A comparative analysis of them and the sources of other countries is carried out. The analysis of Polish narratives shows that in Poland during the XIth–XVth centuries nomads from the East were not of much
interest, they were mentioned sporadically, albeit with the certain frequency.
Although the information about them in the annals (yearbooks) is rare, Polish
chroniclers without much interest, however, repeatedly noted the presence of the
Cumans in the lands of the Piast dynasty, applying to them the descriptions typical of
medieval Eastern Roman (Byzantine), German, Hungarian historiography. 46
mentions of the Polovtsy-Cumans in J. Długosz’s Annales are analysed separately.
The origin of each of these mentions is determined and compared with the original
source, on the basis of which borrowings, errors, distortions, as well as the late
medieval author’s own systematised vision of the image of the nomads are identified

У статті проаналізовано участь духовенства в дипломатичних місіях галицьких князів впродовж середини ХІІ – середини ХІІІ ст. Попри
недостатнє висвітлення подібних місій джерелами, слід  констатувати, що роль кліриків у галицьких посольствах була вагомою. Духовні особи часто виконували найбільш важливі доручення князя – як внутрішньо-, так і зовнішньополітичного характеру.
The article concerns the participation and involvement of the clergy in diplomatic affairs of the Halician princes during the middle of the 12th – first half of the 13th cc. Despite the lack of coverage of sources data related to such missions, it should be pointed out that the role of clergy in Halician embassies was quite significant. Clergy often carried aut the most important mission of the princes – of both domestic and foreign political character.

This study investigated the unique features of the Sibreh subdialect from the Greater Aceh dialect spoken in Aceh, Indonesia. The data for this qualitative study were collected through elicitations from 70 native Acehnese speakers living in Sibreh, Aceh. The findings showed six unique features of the Sibreh subdialect that are different from the standard Acehnese and the Greater Aceh dialect itself. These features include (1) the production of uvular fricative /ʁ/, (2) the reduction of some consonants at word-initial positions, (3) the realization of alveolar nasal and velar nasal to replace some consonants at word-final positions, (4) the monophthongization of the diphthong /ai/, (5) variations in plosive consonants, and (6) realization of alveolar fricative /s/ as lamino alveo-dental stop /S/. These features are unpredictable and considered of other Acehnese dialects. The unique features of this subdialect have caused mockery from other Acehnese dialect speakers, and this has led the Sibreh speakers to feel insecure and self-conscious towards their subdialect. The paper argues that there is a lack of public literacy on their subdialect and concludes that cultivating the awareness of linguistic diversity is important to strengthen the kinship, positive attitude, loyalty, and pride of the Acehnese people towards their rich culture as a whole.

Розвідка присвячена опрацюванню та публікації досі малознаної
міської панорами Галича першої половини ХІХ ст., що походить з
колекції фондів о. А. Петрушевича. Схематична замальовка
суттєво доповнює досі знані види міста. Разом з тим текстова
частина документа відкриває добрі перспективи до вивчення
літературного осмислення історії Галича тогочасними
громадянами краю.

The exploration is devoted to the elaboration and publication of the
hitherto little)known city panorama of Halych of the first half of the
19th century, which originates from the collection of the funds of
A. Petrushevych. The schematic sketch significantly complements the still
known views of the city. At the same time, the textual part of the document
opens good prospects for the study of the literary understanding of the
history of Halych by the citizens of the region at that time.

Mehrsprachigkeit ist seit langem ein charakteristisches Phänomen der polnisch-litauischen Karaimen. Die Karaimen verwendeten bekanntlich zusätzlich zum Karaimischen, einer Turksprache, noch verschiedene slavische Sprachen. Den slavischen Elementen im Karaimischen wurde bereits viel Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, Untersuchungen zu den sprachlichen Besonderheiten der von den Karaimen gesprochenen slavischen Sprachen gibt es jedoch kaum. Die in diesem Artikel vorgestellte Analyse ist ein Beitrag zu diesem Thema. Er umfasst eine Textausgabe sowie eine sprachliche Beschreibung eines aus dem Karaimischen übersetzten polnischen Textes aus dem frühen 19. Jahrhundert, der von einem Kopisten aus Luck in hebräischer Schrift verfasst wurde.

Стаття присвячена колекції богослужбових книг XVII–XX ст., котрі зберігаються у Націо­наль­ному заповіднику “Давній Галич”, або досліджувалися науковцями установи впродовж 1994–2018 рр. Головними об’єктами студій стали понад 50 екземплярів книг, що походять з парафій галицької церковної організації. Головно серед опрацьованих пам’яток домінують Євангеліє, Тріодь, Служеб­ник, Мінея, Часослов, Октоїх, Псалтир, Анфологіон та Апостол.  Особливу увагу приділено проблемі ка­та­логізації стародруків, а також вивченню їх у контексті джерелознавчої перспективи. Важ­ливий елемент дослідження становлять покрайні написи, насамперед представлені фундаційними текс­тами, які часто інформують сучасників про вже неіснуючі храми, фіксують імена жертво­давців, свя­щеннослужителів та дяків. Разом з тим на сторінках книг трапляються й неординарні за­мітки, наприклад фрагмент колядки, літописні свідчення чи виправлення літургійних текстів здійс­нені з конфесійних мотивів. Відтак, комплекс пам’яток, умовно детермінований, як галицькі церковні ста­родруки відкриває широкі перспективи для подальших історичних та релігієзнавчих студій краю.

The paper is an attempt to answer the question: when could prince Švitrigaila, son of Algirdas (Świdrygiełło Olgierdowicz, Svidrigailo Olgerdovich), possess Halych, situated in the territory of the Kingdom of Poland, along with the adjacent territory? Until recently this fact was known only from a short mention in a document from the beginning of the 15th century, and it remained unclear, how to date this page in his riotous biography. Documents found in the archives of Warsaw and Lviv and published in the appendix allow us to date his Halych tenure to the period between October, 1405 and June, 1408, when Švitrigaila deserted to Moscow for Vasily I’s service, where he was granted the town of Vladimir and other possessions. It is shown that his short tenure in Halych allowed Švitrigaila to establish and strengthen his ties with the Ruthenian nobility under the rule of the Polish king. Even in May, 1408 (if the date of the document surviving in a 16th-century copy is correct), i. e., on the eve of his departure for Moscow, Švitrigaila was granting land near Halych to local nobles. Later he would use these ties to reconcile with his brother, king Władysław II Jagiełło of Poland, and to return to the dominions of the Gediminids, as he certainly did later.

The article presents the circumstances and context of finding a glass goblet in a woman’s grave in the Orthodox cathedral in the village of Krylos (near Halych, now in Ukraine) in 1937 and an attempt at reconstructing the shape of this find. In addition to an overview of research on this topic, the article analyses the line of argumentation reflected in the literature, the ways in which researchers used their predecessors’ findings to create their own narratives and the sources that were explored in this process. The author concludes that it still impossible to identify with certainty either the woman in whose grave the goblet had been found or the man buried close to her in a sarcophagus (Yaroslav Osmomysl?). The dating of the goblet to the 12th c. is generally not questioned. The shape of the vessel was reconstructed on the basis of the synthetic monograph Staryy Halych from 1944. For this reconstruction, it was assumed that the lower part of the vessel resembled in shape the bottoms of glass vessels excavated in Vyshhorod near Kiev in 1935, and probably in Kiev itself in 1936–1937. A similarity of the Krylos goblet to the Kiev finds had already been noted by its discoverer Yaroslav Pasternak, but this fact was overlooked in later literature. The finds from Vyshhorod were first noted by Boris A. Rybakov, whose laconic mention in the 1948 study Remeslo drevney Rusi was cited quite uncritically by later researchers. However, publications lacked details on those items, especially on their dating and the context of their finding. According to an newer article by a Ukrainian researchers (2014), the glass vessel from the grave in Krylos is now in the collection of the National Museum in Lviv. Research that is currently being done in Ukrainian and Russian archives and museums reveals new and new data on excavations carried out in the first half of the 20th c., which may prove very valuable in describing the history of the single vessel focused on in this article as well as in exploring a wide range of other topics.

This article is a continuation of research in students coming from or related to Halicz and studying in Cracow in the 16th and 17th century. During this period, only two Haliczans studied, while the rest later held offices related to the city of Halicz. The decrease in the number of students from this city should be associated with a decrease in the importance of both the University of Cracow and the city of Halicz in this period.

This thesis focuses on the problem of early medieval fortified settlements that exist in Halycz in West Ukraine. It is based on available literature about this topic.
Thesis is divided into several parts. In the first I briefly explain the history of Halycz and the history of the studies carried out in this area from the end of the 19th century to present day.
The next part of this work deals with the fortified settlements themselves. The study sample contains 10 settlements in the area of Halycz and near the Carpathian Mountains.
This analytic part also contains the findings of the ruins of sacral buildings in the proximity of the settlements. These are both stone and wooden buildings. Only one of them survived to present day.
Exceptional attention was paid to sacral buildings that were found in the earlier studies from the turn of the 19th and 20th century. These older studies focused on the question of the whereabouts of the Cathedral of the Dormition.
The goal of this work is to present new information about the fortified settlements in the area of Halycz that were not published until present day.

У статті проаналізовано роль та участь францисканців в організації
латинських церковних структур у руських володіннях Казимира ІІІ. Активна діяльність міноритів у поліетнічних містах,
заангажованість у процес поставлення перших римо-католицьких єпископів Галицької митрополії, а також підтримка польського короля та його адміністрації привели до формування на межі 60-х – 70-х рр. XIV ст. місіонерського вікаріату Русі ОFM (Ordo Fratrum Minorum – Орден Братів Менших).

Статтю присвячено вивченню королівського привілею на право
вільного вирубування у вікторівських лісах крилоським підданим
галицько-львівського православного єпископа. Документ, виданий у контексті Гадяцької унії, спираючись на уставну грамоту- фальсифікат Галицької церкви князя Лева Даниловича, вперше чітко зафіксував існування поряд з архієрейським осідком на Крилоській горі однойменного сільського поселення.

Стаття присвячена проблемам локалізації княжого двору Галича ХІІ-ХІІІ ст., що дотепер є однiєю з ключових проблем вивчення мiської структури княжої столицi. Опубліковано інформацію про виявлені Архітектурним загоном Галицької археологічної експедиції у 1998-1999 рр. (керівник - Ю.В.Лукомський) рештки монументального комплексу палацових дерев'яно-цегляних будівель першої половини ХІІ ст. на городищі княжої доби в с.Крилос  (літописний Галич).

Wasyla Stefanyka w Iwano-Frankiwsku Zapisy na marginesach stronic halickich starodruków cerkiewnych z XVII wieku Ważnym elementem spuścizny historycznej Halicza jest duchowe dziedzictwo chrześcijańskie. Jej integralną część stanowią liczne księgi liturgiczne gromadzone przez stulecia przy świątyniach wchodzących w skład miejscowej organizacji cerkiewnej 1. Blisko 20 cerkwi, które w różnych czasach przynależały do eklezjalnej administracji, dzięki rozpowszechnianiu się techniki druku, dochowało do naszych czasów cenny, a zarazem mało znany materiał wytworzony w XVII-XX stuleciu, który ze względu na pochodzenie nazywamy "kolekcją halickich starodruków cerkiewnych". Ponieważ kolekcja ta jest dość obszerna, w niniejszym studium skupię się wyłącznie na jej najstarszej części, powstałej w XVII w. Początek historycznych badań nad wspomnianą kolekcją sięga XIX w., kiedy to galicyjskie środowisko naukowe podjęło studia nad historią średniowiecznego centrum władzy książęcej nad Dniestrem i tamtejszym biskupstwem (metropolią). Jednym z głównych zadań ówczesnych badaczy było zlokalizowanie opisywanej w latopisach dietińca (warowni) w Haliczu. Na pytanie dotyczące usytuowania tej fortyfikacji starała się odpowiedzieć cała plejada ukraińskich i polskich historyków, począwszy 1 W XII-XX w. prawosławna, później zaś unicka halicka organizacja cerkiewna, która składała się z biskupstwa/metropolii, namiestnictwa metropolitalnego/biskupiego, dekanatów i prowincji zakonnej oo. bazylianów. The article is devoted to four students from Halych who studied ot the
University of Cracow in the XV century. The brevity of the reports of the
university metric makes their identification more difficutt, To compare the
representation of students from the Halych land, the documentary records
of natives from Halych and Lviv was used.

An interesting monument of medieval masonry is a bas-relief showing a fire-breathing dragon, which is curerntly located in the Uspensky church in Krylos. The style of the creature's presentation is convergent, among others, with several Romanesque monuments in sculptural art from Poland. The motif of this mythical creature has been used in artistic composition since the dawn of time. The symbolism of the dragon contained both positive and pejorative potential, depending on the time and cultural circle in which it appeared.
The authors, based on a comparative analysis of the style of the object, historical sources, epigraphic monuments and preserved forms and decorations of architectural details from the non-existent Cathedral of the Mother of God in Halych, propose to date the image of the dragon to the third quarter of the 12th century. This is also an example of one of the few monuments that show the Western European, Romanesque sculptural tradition in Eastern Europe.

НАРОД І ВЛАДА В ГАЛИЧІ ЯК ЗРАЗОК «ВІЗАНТІЙСЬКОЇ РЕСПУБЛІКИ» Стаття пропонує інтеґрувати політичну історію Галича рубежу ХІІ-ХІІІ ст. в сучасний візантиністичний дискурс із властивим радикальним переосмисленням уявлень про категорії «леґітимности» владних інституцій Східної Римської імперії. На відміну від Західної Європи, яка після падіння Риму під натиском варварських племен адаптувала принцип особистісного «божественного права», за якого влада була особистою власністю певного володаря, Візантія зберегла республіканське ментальне поле й уявлення про владу як власність народу (лише делеґовану певним особам). Ключовою категорією державотворення візантійського типу виступає поняття «політеї»-множини, яка є джерелом «базилеї»-царствености. Автор підкреслює виняткову близькість Галича до Східної Римської імперії. Обґрунтовується пропозиція сприймати політичну систему Галича ХІІ-ХІІІ ст. як виборну республіканську монархію візантійського типу. Це дозволяє переглянути традиційно антагоністичну картину політичного життя Галича як протистояння державотворчої основи персоніфікованої у князях та їхній владі і деструктивної основи, вкладеної у літописних «галичанах», «галицьких боярах» та ін. Це свого роду приклад найзрілішої реалізації республіканської культури, акцептований із його греко-римських джерел, поєднаних із традиціями давньослов'янської спільнотно-вічової культури. Окреслено три етапи еволюції Галицької політеї ХІІ-ХІІІ сторіч: а) слов'янсько-візантійський; б) візантійський і в) візантійсько-франкський. Розглянуто роль географічного розташування Галицької політеї, котра, з одного боку, онтологічно пов'язувалася з лаократією Нового Риму, а з другого-стала прикладом, а можливо, і першоджерелом, демократичних змін у країнах-сусідах Угорщині («Золота булла») та Польщі, які зазнали часткового розмивання парадигми особового «божественного права» латино-європейського типу.

This research concerns the history of medieval Panteleimon’s Church, as the only remaining sacred monuments of the XIII century in Galich. The article deals with the problems of the chronology of the building a temple, its church-canonical status in the structure of Galician (Orthodox) bishop (of the metropolis in 1303) and Galician (Catholic) Archdiocese. Separately analyzed the role of Panteleimon’s complex in the formation of the historical topography of medieval Galich and outlined a number of hypotheses related to the definition of the founder of the temple.

This research emphasizes the study of one of the most outstanding Latin names of Halych in the XIVth century. In the register of provinces and vicariates of the Order of Friars Minor, where a vicariate of Rus appears for the first time, a missionary center of Franciscans in Halych is mentioned. Author(s) of this source have recorded a quite original Latin transcription of the capital of the Halych land as Galciff/Galaf. In our opinion, such name of Halych reflects one of its eastern variants, perhaps of Karaite or Armenian origin.

Document of the Halych Land Chancellery of the 15th Century on the property relations of local nobles
The article presents a brief review and pub/ication of a document issued by the Halych Land Chancellery in 1557. The original of the Act is preserved in the National Archives of Krakow, and its contentillustrates thepractice of property relations of Halych gentry at the turn of the late Middle Ages and the early modern time. Among the main characters of the historical source, the following officials come into thepicture — a landjudge and a sub-judge, as well as representatives of the Halych nobility of the 15—16th centuries.

Работа посвящена истории реликвария Святого Креста, который в 1340–1668 гг. хранился в сокровищнице польский королей в Вавельском замке в Кракове и использовался во время коронационных торжеств. Реликвиарий состоит из сдвоенного креста, выполненного из различных кусочков дерева, обрамленных золотой лентой с греческой надписью на реверсе: «Иисус Христос прибитый ко кресту, возвысил человеческую природу. Выгравировать повелел Мануил Комнин Венценосец». В 1669 г., после своего отказа от польского престола король Ян Казимир Ваза незаконно изъял его из коронной сокровищницы и увез во Францию. After the king’s death, by the way of following legacies, the reliquary found its way into the possessions of the Benedictine Abbey Saint-Germain des Prés in Paris. There it was placed inside of a special silver altar containing «Instruments of the Passion». During French Revolution, in 1793, this reliquary was confiscated and melt down. The relic itself was saved though and kept safe. Presently it is found in the treasury of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. In all probability the reliquary was captured in Lviv, in 1340, together with the treasury of the Dukes of Halych, by the Polish king Casimir. Still under discussion is the identification of Manuel Komnenos ― who is either brought in connection with the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1143–1180) or with the emperor of Trebizond Manuel I Komnenos (1238–1263), while the epigraphic analysis of the inscription as well as the entirety of the historical context speak for the ruler of Constantinople. To the Halych Ruthenia the reliquary of the Holy Cross came probably as a customary gift related to dynastic marriages.

In the first part of this study (Karaim Letters of Jehoszafat Kapłanowski. I. A Critical Edition) a critical edition of two Karaim letters is presented. They were sent in 1868 from Odessa to addressees living Lutsk by a citizen born in Trakai. This paper (the second part of the study) contains a detailed linguistic analysis of the letters. Special attention is paid to the dialectal affiliation of the manuscripts’ linguistic material, to interdialectal contacts and to the irregularities recorded.

Стаття присвячена участі угорських військ у поході до Галичини в 1340 р. на фоні більш відомої в історіографії виправи Казимира ІІІ. Автори переконані в тому, що королівські контингенти, очолювані палатином Віллермо Другетом, були численні за своїм складом, їхня участь у кампанії визначалася кількома попередніми угорсько-польсько-руськими угодами 1335–1339 рр., будучи теж превентивним антитатарським заходом. Завдання короля Карла Роберта полягало в збереженні впливів у Галицькій землі через потенційне обіймання представником династії Анжу польського престолу.

The question of dialect mingling in Karaim has been raised by several authors. We know that there was continual contact between members of most Karaim communities during at least the last three centuries, but we know little about the intensity of the discussed phenomenon. Manuscripts reflecting the spoken language serve as our only source of knowledge. One must, however, be careful when editing them since not every manuscript that contains linguistic material referring to more than one Karaim dialect is to be treated as proof of dialect mingling. The present paper presents a critical edition of a Karaim manuscript written in 1868 which contains both north- and south-western elements, and aims to answer the question whether this document can be treated as a relevant example of dialect mingling.

After endeavouring to examine the grammatical descriptions published in the literature to date and to reconstruct the sound system of the south-western dialect of Karaim as it was presented in the literature, it can certainly be concluded that the matter is far from clear. This is for the simple reason that these works contradict each other at various points. The reason for such discrepancies should be sought in the historical and linguistic backgrounds of the two main centres of the south-western Karaim population, i.e. Lutsk and Halich. Even though these two centres were always in close communication with one another, and the language that was spoken in them originates beyond any doubt from one common root, they remained for centuries under slightly different linguistic influences as a result of the Slavonic languages surrounding them. The present paper aims to present and, where possible, clarify the differences which follow from the studies on the Karaim sound system we have at our disposal. An attempt is also made to identify some differences between the Lutsk and Halich subdialects of south-western Karaim, and explain their origin. Since the grammatical descriptions we are dealing with here and the written sources we are able to work with concern the end of the first half of the 19th century at the earliest, the time scale of our interest is limited to the second half of the 19th and the first four decades of the 20th century.

In the sixth volume of the Karaim journal Karaj Awazy Aleksander Mardkowicz (1875–1944), prepared a six page long article containing reminiscences of the loft in kenesa in Łuck (Mardkowicz 1933b) and a transcription of seven letters found there (Mardkowicz 1933a). Detailed comparison of five of those manuscripts with their transcriptions (we do not know what happened to the remaining two manuscripts) shows that Mardkowicz’s readings are not free from certain shortcomings and errors. Besides a few obvious printing errors, one can find not only erroneous readings, but also a considerable number of changes that had been made intentionally, fragments that had been passed over, translations of Hebrew fragments that had not been noted, and words that bared evident Troki or Crimean Karaim phonetic features but which had been transcribed in such a way as though they had been written in Łuck Karaim. The reason for these intentional amendments to the text of the original manuscripts can probably be ascribed to the fact that A. Mardkowicz – who played a vital role in the Karaim language purism movement – tended to use “normative Karaim” in his journal, even at the price of modifying the content of the letters. The examples of these misrepresentation have been grouped into the following categories: 1) intentional amendments concerning phonetic, morphologic and phonotactic features and dialectal affiliation of the word forms; 2) erroneous readings of Karaim words and Hebrew abbreviations and, finally, 3) translating Hebrew fragments without noting it. The article does not deliver a full critical edition of the manuscripts, as this is going to be the subject of another, much more comprehensive, study, where the facsimiles of the letters will also be published.
