À mi-chemin entre philosophie morale et métaphysique de la liberté, cet essai se propose de méditer la possibilité d’une « éthique de la conviction » pour notre temps, et de réinventer ses coordonnées en la liant de manière indissoluble à la question du « monde ». Plaidant pour un universalisme de la réécriture et de la traduction perpétuelles, la réflexion menée dans ces pages utilise les ressorts de la fiction et de la narration, mobilise les mémoires de l’esclavage et du colonialisme, et investit la thématique de la catastrophe, afin de restituer au sujet moral une puissance d’invention et de création dans et pour le monde commun, là-même où le premier fait l’épreuve mélancolique d’une perte de sens abyssale. Tout au long d’un parcours exigeant qui nous entraine de la philosophie kantienne et fichtéenne au cinéma dramatique de Jeff Nichols, en passant par la tragédie de Heinrich von Kleist, le roman lyrique de Toni Morrison et le roman grotesque de Sony Labou Tansi, l’essai cartographie à nouveaux frais l’expérience vécue, pathique, d’une volonté inconditionnelle, et à proprement parler « folle », de liberté dans et pour un monde en droit habitable et partageable. Il situe son enquête – et ses propositions – dans l’aller-retour entre la liberté problématique, voire catastrophique, du sujet, et l’horizon indéterminé du monde, sous la menace constante de l’aliénation ou même de la privation de l’une et de l’autre.

La poetologia della conoscenza di Heinrich von Kleist si configura come un viaggio nella mente umana, nelle sue capacità conoscitive e immaginative, nelle sue labilità e nei suoi trascendimenti. La totalità romantica è infranta e il linguaggio è il materiale magmatico di attraversamento del reale e della mente: in ciò si esprime un progetto epistemico che, muovendo dall’orizzonte biologico della corporeità, si realizza, in virtù della forza poietica del linguaggio, nella narrazione.

Caspar David Friedrichs Gemälde „Mönch am Meer“ wurde zusammen mit seinem Bild „Abtei im Eichwald“ 1810 in der Berliner Akademie-Ausstellung gezeigt. Die beiden Werke von Friedrich erhielten viel Aufmerksamkeit und waren sehr umstritten. Heinrich von Kleist hatte sich schon im Jahr zuvor an der erregten Diskussion um den „Tetschener Altar“ von Caspar David Friedrich beteiligt und veröffentlichte im Herbst 1810 in den von ihm herausgegebenen „Berliner Abendblättern“ einen Beitrag zu Friedrichs Bild „Mönch am Meer“. Der Text stammte eigentlich von Clemens Brentano und Achim von Arnim. Kleist übernahm jedoch nur den Textanfang von Brentano mit kleineren Veränderungen und führte dann die Argumentation selbstständig fort. Dabei griff er lediglich einige inhaltliche Anregungen aus dem zweiten Textabschnitt, den Achim von Arnim verfasst hatte, sehr frei auf. Brentano, mit dessen Kürzel „cb“ der Beitrag „Empfindungen vor Friedrichs Seelandschaft“ erschien, war über die Veränderungen des Herausgebers sehr verärgert und zwang Kleist zu einer Richtigstellung der Verfasserfrage in einer der folgenden Ausgaben der „Berliner Abendblätter“. In dieser Erklärung betont Kleist, dass „nur der Buchstabe“ des Textes über Friedrichs Bild Clemens Brentano und Achim von Arnim gehöre, der „Geist aber, und die Verantwortlichkeit“ für die Veröffentlichung in den Abendblättern ihm zukomme. Auch wenn der so maßgeblich von Kleist überarbeitete Beitrag zu Friedrichs Gemälde „Mönch am Meer“ verhältnismäßig kurz ist, enthält er sehr wichtige Äußerungen von Kleist zur Naturvorstellung und zur Ästhetik. Dabei sind Kleists spezifische Rezeption des Gemäldes von Caspar David Friedrich und die inhaltlichen Veränderungen des Ausgangstextes von Clemens Brentano und Achim von Arnim signifikant.

In diesem Buch geht Onur Bazarkaya dem poetischen Stellenwert des gelehrten Scharlatans oder, weiter gefasst, der Scharlatanthematik in der deutschen Literatur um 1800 auf den Grund. Anhand einschlägiger Texte von Christoph Martin Wieland, Friedrich Schiller, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Heinrich von Kleist und E.T.A. Hoffmann beleuchtet er die vielfältigen Funktionen, die der Scharlatan als wissensgeschichtliche Figur erfüllt. Darüber hinaus führt er vor Augen, dass infolge der vielfachen Bearbeitung der Scharlatanthematik mit der Zeit ein reichhaltiger Fundus an entsprechenden Ideen und Motiven entstand, aus dem die Autoren nicht zuletzt für intertextuelle Spielereien schöpfen konnten. Anders ausgedrückt, bildete sich um die Jahrhundertwende eine richtiggehende Scharlatanpoetik heraus, die Bazarkaya in ihren Umrissen sichtbar macht.

The prose poem is convenient form of expressing used by German storytellers such as Kleist and Hoffmann. Using the comparative analysis, lyrical elements in prose works of these two authors have been found. In general, those are the element of fantasy, rhythmicity, musicality, the theme of the double, the inner stage of the characters. Due to confirmation, these elements are compared with another German author - Goethe and his ballad The Erlking. Analyses of presence of lyrical elements in prose showed a need to step out from the patterns established by classicism, romanticism and to think outside the box in general, to ramble and give the spirit freedom. That has resulted in mixture of genres, which later led to significant shifts in modern literary trends.

J.M. Coetzee's The Childhood of Jesus and The Schooldays of Jesus typify the concerns of his later writings. These concerns are crystallized around the concept of life and the dynamic relation between a post-secular valorization of life as sacred and the risk of sacrifice inherent to any attempt to both count, or account, for life. This dynamic is not simply thematized. Rather, through what I am terming Coetzee's literary thinking, the ethico-political import of ‘life’ in Coetzee's late works is bound up with the question of their meaning as literary works. Accordingly, Coetzee's literary thinking helps to address the interaction of life and form that is at the center of debates about affect and the body, animal and posthuman life, and the formal distinctiveness of the literary work.

As a restless wanderer, as one crucified by a consciousness of the gulf between his inner life and the constraints imposed upon him by societal and political realities and as one who followed love-sick Werther into death to be at one with his beloved, Heinrich von Kleist presented Romantic credentials to the highest degree. Yet in the ten short year of his feverish literary activity he became a great dramatist, a feat denied to other Romantics, too fixated on the status of " the Poet " to release themselves by creating truly independent characters, and also excelled in prose fiction and the penning of philosophic treatises. As an arch-Romantic he earned the distain of Goethe and yet his tragedy Penthesilea shared with Goethe's Iphigenia auf Tauris a central concern with the suffering of heroines whose passionate devotion to inner values conflicted with the norms of the cultic and religious duties of their official status, whether as a priestess serving the goddess Diana or the leader of the warlike Amazons. Acutely aware of profound cleft between the inner and the outer world, between the ideal realm and external reality, produced works that raised universal questions in a gripping or even humorous manner. His Der Zerbrochene Krug (The Broken Jug) poses what some have deemed to be German literature's one great comedy. In this the leading character is a judge who presides over a court hearing investigating a crime that he himself has committed. His novella entitled Michael Kohlhaas tells a story, set in the time of the Reformation, in which the protagonist is a horse-trader whose animals are taken from him by a wily robber baron; the demonstrates the truth that an honorable man's overpowering sense of justice can make him so intolerant of injustice that he resorts to taking the law into his own hands and finally commits acts of uncontrolled violence to become what we today would brand as a terrorist. The acts of the Baader-Meinhof terrorist cell have been interpreted in such a light. The ction of his most celebrate drama Der Prinz von Homburg is centered on the aftermath of a battle fought between the Elector of Brandenburg and the Swedes in 1675. The Prince of Homburg, a young officer in the Elector of Brandenburg's army, being absorbed in dreamy state of mind, does not register the Elector's command not to attack the enemy until the requisite order is issued. The Prince attacks the enemy nevertheless, and wins a great victory. The Elector faces a dilemma, as normally he would honor such a military feat but in this case the Prince's action has all the appearances of amounting to insubordination, an infringement of the military code worthy of the death penalty. There are mitigating circumstances, however, as the Prince's dreamy state of mind had previously caused him to sleepwalk and come into possession of a glove which in a wakened state of consciousness he recognizes as belonging to his beloved Natalie, the Elector's niece. The Elector is prepared to acquit the Prince on condition that he admits that his aberrant behavior justifies his execution. The Prince not only agrees to accepting his guilt but gleefully deems it an honor to lay down his life in the service of the Elector. Thus he avoids execution. Even this brief summary shows that the play concerns the liminal region in which subjective psychological states impinge on events presented as real in the physical world.

Literaturverfilmungen sind populär: Mindestens die Hälfte aller jemals gedrehten Filme geht auf eine literarische Vorlage zurück. Dieser Band stellt geeignete Werkzeuge und Verfahren vor, um den Medienwechsel vom Buch zum Film im Deutschunterricht zu analysieren. Am Beispiel von klassischen Schullektüren (Goethes Werther, Kleists Marquise von O…, Kafkas Process, Süskinds Parfum) und ihren Verfilmungen werden schriftliterarisches und filmisches Erzählen gegenübergestellt.

H παρούσα μελέτη παρουσιάζει την βαθιά καινοτόμα ρομαντική οπτική γωνία στον κόσμο και τα πράγματα. Ειδικότερα εισάγει τον έλληνα αναγνώστη στις θεωρητικές αρχές και τους φιλοσοφικούς/ ποιητολογικούς προβληματισμούς καθώς και τις βασικές θεματικές και τους τρόπους γραφής των γερμανών ρομαντικών. Η μελέτη εντάσσει τον γερμανικό ρομαντισμό στο ιστορικό και φιλοσοφικό-ιδεολογικό πλαίσιο της εποχής του και αναστοχάζεται πάνω στην «κληρονομιά» του προς τα μεταγενέστερα αισθητικά κινήματα.
Ως ένα παράδειγμα της διαχρονικότητας του ρομαντισμού προτείνεται  μια θεώρηση των κειμένων του Γεώργιου Βιζυηνού «υπό ρομαντική οπτική γωνία», η σκιαγράφηση μιας εκλεκτικής συγγένειας. Η γοητεία του θαυμαστού, τα απραγματοποίητα ταξίδια και οι ανεκπλήρωτοι έρωτες, η αρχή της υπέρβασης και της ερμηνείας που απαντούν στα κείμενα του Βιζυηνού συνθέτουν το καθοριστικό για το έργο του σχήμα της διαρκούς εναλλαγής μεταξύ προσδοκίας και απογοήτευσης – την αέναη κίνηση του εκκρεμούς της ρομαντικής ειρωνείας.

Lucia Ruprecht's study is the first monograph in English to analyse the relationship between nineteenth-century German literature and theatrical dance. Combining cultural history with close readings of major texts by Heinrich von Kleist, E.T.A. Hoffmann and Heinrich Heine, the author brings to light little-known German resources on dance to address the theoretical implications of examining the interdiscursive and intermedial relations between the three authors' literary works, aesthetic reflections on dance, and dance of the period. In doing so, she not only shows how dancing and writing relate to one another but reveals the characteristics that make each mode of expression distinct unto itself. Readings engage with literary modes of understanding physical movement that are neglected under the regime of eighteenth-century aesthetic theory, and of classical ballet, setting the human, frail and expressive body against the smoothly idealised neoclassicist ideal. Particularly important is the way juxtaposing texts and performance practice allows for the emergence of meta-discourses about trauma and repetition and their impact on aesthetics and formulations of the self and the human body. Related to this is the author's concept of performative exercises or dances of the self which constitute a decisive force within the formation of subjectivity that is enacted in the literary texts. Joining performance studies with psychoanalytical theory, this book opens up new pathways for understanding Western theatrical dance's theoretical, historical and literary continuum.

Even compared to his fellow genre luminaries, it is evident that Thomas Mann was an unusually self-aware author of German novellas, one who studied the genre and its pioneers in search of style and content models. In his rivalry with the naïve artist Goethe, Mann found theoretical comfort in Schiller’s Ueber naive
und sentimentalische Dichtung, while creating a parallel narrative on his kinship with the sentimental artist Kleist. Mann’s preface to the first U.S. edition of Kleist’s novellas, “Kleist and his Stories,” presents striking parallels between Kleist and Mann as sentimental poets subject to and dependent on fits of naïve inspiration. Mann was a most self-aware executor of Kleist’s legacy, employing models of style, form, and content in homages to Kleist, with whom he identified personally and artistically — a kinship most evident in Mann’s Der Tod in Venedig.1

This article examines two aspects of Philippe Gaulier’s pedagogy in relation to the development of Neutral Mask pedagogies in twentieth-century French mime training, specifically those responding to nineteenth and early twentieth-century marionette theories of movement. The first is his strategic use of disorientation through lack of instruction (via negativa) in order to make visible inculturated embodied habits; the second is his emphasis on the performer embodying genuine ‘pleasure’ as she pretends to have a different emotion. The paper examines these techniques in the context of Neutral Mask training, and its development during the twentieth century in France, in order to consider the ways in which they both reflect and revise nineteenth- and early twentieth-century marionette theories of performer movement as espoused in particular by Heinrich von Kleist and Edward Gordon Craig. It considers the ways in which constructions of the ‘natural’ body as pursued by Jacques Copeau and later Étienne Decroux and Jacques Lecoq respond to these marionette theories which seek to do away entirely with interior states such as consciousness and emotion, and in placing these responses alongside Gaulier’s deployments of disorientation and ‘pleasure’. It suggests that Gaulier’s techniques of disorientation serve a similar function to donning the neutral mask in stripping away learned habits of movement, and that his emphasis on experiencing and demonstrating ‘pleasure’ in the pretence of performance both reflects marionette theories by replicating the puppeteer/puppet dynamic, and revises them by foregrounding emotionality.

M ichael Kohlhaas (1805-10) remains one of the most well-known and most disturbing works in the German literary tradition. In addition to fascinating two centuries of readers and authors, Heinrich von Kleist's (1777-1811) novella has attracted an exceptionally large amount of critical reflection without, however, scholars having reached any interpretive consensus on the work's central problem, namely the problem of determining the story's moral value. How should the reader judge the protagonist's actions? Should his rampant campaign of vengeance be denounced as a perversion of justice or is his reaction to the injustices of the world somehow noble and laudable? Is Kohlhaas fundamentally good or horrifyingly evil? A criminal or a hero? Are his actions just or unjust? The difficulties in arriving at perfect moral clarity on this core issue are mirrored by Kleist's narrator's persistent vacillations.

Nel passaggio tra  il secolo 18 e il secolo 19 la discussione sulla tragedia diventa un tema centrale della discussione estetico-filosofica. Da un lato la questione dell’effetto e del significato morale della rappresentazione tragica viene accantonata e si ricerca piuttosto la definizione dell’essenza del tragico. Dall’altro il discorso sulla tragedia è collocato in un contesto di filosofia della storia e diventa parte costitutiva della riflessione sulla modernità. Il presente contributo si propone di riconsiderare sinteticamente dibattito sulla tragedia moderna  attraverso le posizioni di quattro autori: due filosofi idealisti (Hegel e Solger),  un tragediografo che è anche autore di importanti testi teorici (Schiller) e  uno scrittore fortemente influenzato dal dibattito filosofico coevo (Kleist).

Heinrich von Kleist was an author deeply tied to the authors of the Enlightenment of the previous generation. His works demonstrate this relationship through the use of themes and motifs of the Aufklärung. This is for instance the case of the adoption motif, that recurs also in some of Lessing’s works. Ruth Klüger identified similarities between Lessing’s Nathan and Kleist’s “Der Findling”. It remains unexplored how this motif recurs in other two texts of Lessing and Kleist: Miss Sara Sampson and “Das Erdbeben in Chili”. In both texts the end is marked by the death of the own biological children, replaced by adopted children. Enlightenment thinkers assert the superiority of adoption. So when in Lessing’s Miss Sara Sampson at the end the harmony is restored thanks to an adoption, in Kleist’s “Erdbeben“ it remains doubtful if this adoption will be successful. The typical als-ob structure and the conjunctive determines this ambiguity. Kleist’s text can be seen as an opposition to the optimistic ideals of the Enlightenment, even if this opposition is not explicit and the interpretation is left to the reader.

Der bisherige Forschungsdiskurs zu Hermann Hesses 1906 erschienener Erzählung Unterm Rad enthält viele offene Fragen. Weil die Handlung sich so nah an Hesses eigener Biographie bewegt, verschleiert sie eine alleingültige Intention des Autors und macht es umso schwieriger für Kritiker, zwischen den zwei Geschichten zu unterscheiden. Viele Kritiker tragen im Wesentlichen vor, dass die Zusammenhänge zwischen dem Protagonisten Hans Giebenrath und Hesses eigenem Leben die weitere Forschung über die Erzählung stagnieren lassen, da die literaturwissenschaftliche Diskussion immer wieder zurück zu Hesses eigener Erfahrung im preußischen Schulsystem kehrt. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, auch wenn sie die Parallelen zu Hesses Leben würdigt, das Buch in den damaligen historischen Rahmen einzuordnen, um seine Wichtigkeit im literarischen Kontext zu analysieren.

Sie beginnt mit einer Analyse der Normen der  Erziehungsmethoden des Bürgertums und der Adelsgesellschaft im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert, also der Entstehungszeit der Erzählung, die sich innerhalb der langen Tradition von Kindererziehung mit Kraft und Strafe bewegt und auf Quellen bis ins Jahr 1752 zurück verfolgt werden kann. Hesses fiktive Figur ist deswegen die ideale Grundlage für eine Analyse der pädagogischen Methoden in dieser Zeit.

Um eine neuere Perspektive zu eröffnen, soll dieser Beitrag die Diskussion durch Roland Barthes Theorie der "Absicht des Autors" im Lichte der New Historicism-Theorie ergänzen. Die These analysiert den Text innerhalb der Einschränkungen von "Der Tod des Autors" und fährt fort mit Michel Foucoults "Was ist ein Autor?" Das Ziel ist es zu beurteilen, was Unterm Rad über die Kindererziehung zur Jahrhundertwende in Deutschland sagt, insbesondere begabte Kinder, und wie es darauf angewendet werden kann, was vom historischen Standpunkt aus bereits bekannt ist. Zusätzlich wird die Erzählung aus Hans Giebenraths Sicht auf das Konzept der deutschen Psychologin Katharinas Rutschky, der "Schwarzen Pädagogik" und ihrer Theorien zur Unterdrückung angewandt. Weiterhin wird dieses Konzept durch Alice Millers Untersuchungen zur Kindererziehung in Bezug auf Hans Erfahrungen an der Schule in Maulbronn erweitert.

Seit den Anfängen der abendländischen Kultur- und Literaturgeschichte sind Zorn und Wut zentrale Motive literarischer Texte. Zugleich sind sie Gegenstand intensiver theoretischer Reflexionen in verschiedensten Feldern des Wissens. Das Buch führt beide Aspekte in diskursgeschichtlicher Perspektive zusammen: Ausgehend von den antiken Voraussetzungen (von Homers Ilias bis Senecas De ira) stellt es den epochalen Umbruch in der Codierung des Zorns an der Schwelle zur Moderne ins Zentrum. War der Zorn Jahrhunderte lang als Wunsch nach Rache aufgrund gekränkter Ehre oder verletzten Rechts definiert worden, wird er seit Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts unter der neuen Kategorie des Gefühls (und mehr und mehr unter dem Namen ‚Wut’) mit Begriffen von Energie und Widerstand beschrieben: als Gefühl einer „Beeinträchtigung unseres eigenen Ich’s“ (Burdach). Während von der Antike bis zur Neuzeit der Zorn Ehre und Recht verteidigt, bewacht die moderne Wut: das Leben, das Begehren und das Glück. Die germanistische Studie untersucht an Hand von Diskursen und Texten vom späten 18. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert sowohl die theoretischen Folgen und Weiterentwicklungen dieses Umbruchs als auch die Konsequenzen für das Erzählen von Zorn und Wut.

A border can be dangerous and deadly, but that is not necessarily due to the natural barriers surrounding it. The border, in order to keep people from crossing, needs to be ›secured‹ persistently-by installing fences and patrols, boxing in paths and possibilities of crossing, checking documents, identities and baggage, surveilling the territory with cameras, watch towers and drones, and by using military forces when needed. The border can only be ›secured‹ when it is active. Thus, with regard to this activity, we need to focus on the practices and arrangements of control as the active micro-devices of the border, and on what it does to the subjects passing it or being stopped by it. This has been mainly an issue in literary texts and autobiographic reports on the crossing of borders. With reference to the descriptions of Heinrich von Kleist, Sara Ahmed and Shahram Khozravi, this essay traces down the effects and affects of border control as a subjectification device. Two questions will be discussed in this essay: What does border control do to the people it stops or prevents from crossing? And how does this relate to the alleged elimination of border controls in the Schengen Area?

The 18th-century tradition of partimento and thoroughbass exercises has come under intense scrutiny of historians, theorists, and pedagogues during the last years. Much less attention has been paid to the vivid persistence of this tradition in the 19th century all over Europe. Not only the education of organists but especially the training of pianiste-compositeurs proved to be fertile ground for the practical training in the partimento tradition: Performances of fantasies, improvisations of cadenzas, interludes, lead-ins and ornaments were part of their daily-business. 19th-century manuals and teachers imparting the skills necessary for this kind of improvisation rely on thoroughbass and partimento exercises almost exclusively. At the same time they refrain from contemporary theories of „modern harmony“. This shall be shown in this paper with the help of three examples: Friedrich Kalkbrenner, Friedrich Hiller and Frédéric Chopin. This 19th-century tradition is of interest not only for historians and theorists; romantic partimenti also open up new approaches and perspectives for a present music theory pedagogy, which in recent years has started to challenge the customary boundaries between theory, composition, improvisation, and performance.
