History, Archaelogy and Art of the ancient Taranto in South Italy

"A partire dallo studio dei toponimi, il testo esamina le peculiarità del territorio crispianese. In particolare, grazie alle nuove etimologie di San Simini (saltus liminis), del monte Trazzonara (tracheia Aulon, il famoso monte cantato anche da Virgilio e Orazio e noto anche grazie a Marziale, Porfirione e Servio) e di Crispiano (callis plana), l'Autore offre un nuovo preciso contesto a notizie ed eventi menzionati nella letteratura antica e medievale (circa la transumanza, l'allevamento e l'agricoltura intensiva). Ne deriva che Crispiano, fin dai primi tempi della colonizzazione greca, ha vissuto eventi di un tale rilievo economico e sociale che alcune ipotesi qui avanzate hanno conseguenze anche sulla storia della Puglia e dell'Italia.
La ricostruzione della storia antica permette di esaminare con occhi nuovi anche l'età altomedievale e di includere Crispiano (identificata come parte del 'confine' longobardo) tra i territori donati da Arechi II ai Benedettini di Santa Sofia (Benevento): un nuovo legame con la storia già nota dell'Abbazia di Santa Maria di Crispiano e con la Regia Dogana per la Mena delle Pecore, ossia con la storia economica più recente, opportunamente rivisitata."

Le fr. 124 Wehrli d'Aristoxène sur la « barbarisation » des Poséidoniates et la fin des cultes grecs à Poséidonia renvoie à l'attraction politique et culturelle que Rome exerçait sur une partie des élites aristocratiques lucaniennes au cours de la seconde moitié du IV e siècle av. J.-C., particulièrement vers la fin du siècle. Ce processus culturel d'« auto-romanisation » fut favorisé par l'avancée des Romains en Campanie et en Italie du Sud et s'inscrivait dans la durée et le temps long, mais il se conclut brutalement en 273 av. J.-C. par la déduction de la colonie de Paestum et la fondation sur place d'une nouvelle cité. Les dieux de la cité grecque de Poséidonia étaient alors définitivement morts et avaient été remplacés par les dieux romains de la colonie de Paestum.

The " barbarisation " of Poseidonia and the end of Greek cults in Paestum.
Fr. 124 Wehrli of Aristoxenus, on the " barbarisation " of the Poseidonians and the end of Greek cults in Poseidonia, refers to the political and cultural attraction Rome held for a section of the Lucanian aristocratic elites during the second half of the 4 th century BC, particularly towards the end of the century. This cultural process of " self-Romanisation " was furthered by the Romans' advance into Campania and southern Italy and developed gradually over a long period of time; but it ended abruptly in 273 BC with the deduction of the colony of Paestum and the founding of a new city on the spot. The gods of the Greek city of Poseidonia were by then truly dead and had been replaced by the Roman gods of the colony of Paestum.

The paper focuses on the iconographic analysis of a carparo statue from the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto. Thanks to several comparisons, it is possible to argue that it is a representation of Dionysus, dressed in pardalis and short chiton. The pose and clothing lead back to a statuary type known from several Roman replicas (Hope type) and from late-Classical votive reliefs. The iconography and religious relationship between Dionysus and Artemis Bendis is also addressed to clarify the particular meaning that the statue could have had in Taranto. Finally, the possible context of the discovery of the sculpture is analyzed, hypothetically identifiable in the sanctuary found at the end of the 19th century between Acclavio and Anfiteatro streets.

Il contributo sviluppa un’indagine conoscitiva sugli arsenali della Marina Militare durante il periodo interessato dalla Prima Guerra Mondiale; la ricognizione critica di tale patrimonio culturale parte da un inquadramento generale per poi approfondire specifici casi-studio, tra cui emerge, per il ruolo strategico, l’arsenale di Taranto. L’esito dell’indagine, sviluppata attraverso il materiale bibliografico, archivistico e iconografico conservato nell’Archivio Storico della Marina Militare, ha fornito una base conoscitiva indispensabile per lo sviluppo della ricerca, impostata non solo sull’approfondimento delle singole strutture portuali ma anche sul rapporto che, in questo periodo storico, viene a instauratisi tra arsenali, contesti urbani e paesaggistici. Nell’agosto 1914 (11 agosto), con la dichiarazione di guerra tra Francia e Impero austro-ungarico, appare con evidenza quanto le diverse piazze marittime italiane si trovino in condizioni non rispondenti alle esigenze del momento soprattutto per la mancanza di un sistematico assetto difensivo sull’Adriatico. Il “Piano generale delle operazioni marittime in Adriatico” elaborato dalla Regia Marina prevede una nuova collocazione della flotta nel porto di Taranto, struttura che diviene il fulcro delle operazioni navali italiane, con Brindisi, in contemporanea, che può offrire un approdo soltanto ai navigli leggere e alle siluranti. Attraverso la lettura del “Riassunto dell’opera compiuta nell’anno 1915-1916”, si apprende che la struttura tarantina, importante base strategica, richiede immediatamente un significativo impegno sia tecnico sia amministrativo, concentrato soprattutto nell’anno di guerra 1916; ciò comporta: l’ingrandimento dell’arsenale e la nuova sistemazione di officine e magazzini, dovendo la struttura esplicare maggiore attività nei lavori di grandi riparazioni. Numerosi i lavori eseguiti in bacino: nave Cavour, Duilio, navi inglesi come la Dublin silurata in Adriatico, Regina Margherita, imbarcazione che in soli quattro mesi è oggetto di radicali lavori di trasformazione. Considerevole anche l’impegno per la sistemazione delle artiglierie antiaeree su navigli leggeri e piroscafi.
Nell’Alto Adriatico e nella piazza di Venezia, contestualmente si procede nella difesa marittima, con azioni di rinforzo alle batterie costiere, contro l’attacco di motoscafi o sommergibili, nell’area dell’arsenale di Venezia e di Chioggia (dicembre 1916); si procede, inoltre, alla realizzazione di un progetto d’impianto di rete ferroviaria in arsenale, con tutti i problemi della topografia che “troppo risente dell’antico”, situazione che induce a riflettere sulla convenienza, data anche la guerra aerea moderna, di rafforzare e migliorare l’arsenale di Venezia posto a immediato contatto di una città altamente storica. Uno dei fascicoli conservati nell’Archivio della Marina Militare contiene tutte le informazioni dell’ampliamento, con pochi e non dispendiosi lavori, dell’Officina Pirotecnica sull’isola della Certosa. L’isola, infatti, possiede i requisiti desiderabili per una sede pirotecnica e ha un’estensione tale da permettere futuri ingrandimenti.

This thesis aims to describe the transformations that occurred in fishing between the middle of the 18th century and the Unification of Italy (1861), focusing on the two Apulian coasts: the Adriatic (Province of Bari) and the Ionian (Taranto).
The first chapter is a brief history of Mediterranean fishing: it describes the development of this activity through the centuries, from artisanal techniques and local organization to the introduction of pair trawlers, which occurred for the first time at the beginning of 18th century in Catalunia (Spain).
The second chapter focuses on legislation in the Kingdom of Naples: from the traditional locally-based regulations to national initiatives (the first was in 1784) designed to counteract the sail-trawlers, which also fished far off shore, thus avoiding traditional controls; it outlines fishing legislation in the Kingdom of Naples (which became Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in 1815) until the time of its collapse and unification with other Italian states in 1860.
The third chapter is about the fishermen of Terra di Bari (=Land of Bari), and in particular from Barletta, Trani and Molfetta. The first part of this chapter focuses on the very first occurrences of sail-trawling (pair trawlers) as detailed in provincial records (1770s and 1780s). The introduction of this method was directly connected to a decrease in trade, which had led to unemployment among sailors (and boats). Sail trawling became their favoured alternative activity because it did not require specific know-how. These first trawlermen were therefore lacking in the knowledge of fish and sustainable fishing that traditional fishermen had learnt through their close relationship with the sea over several centuries. The practice set off an intense debate between scientists and policy makers, leading to the introduction of laws and other State intervention in fishing up to 1860. The distance of the Province from the capital and the extreme poverty of the sailor community, which was described in many letters by local administrators to central government, led the latter to exempt these fishermen from complying with national laws on trawling. From the Restoration (1815) onwards, these trawlers (in particular those from Trani and Molfetta) started fishing annually in the Tyrrhenian Sea (in the winter), causing conflicts with local fishing communities. In addition, sailors from Barletta fished in the Ionian Sea when they brought salt to the Ionian coast of Calabria: as a result there were numerous problems with Taranto, a city where fishing had always been the main activity for most of the population.
The last chapter focuses entirely on fishing in Taranto. This city was wholly built on an island "between two seas", the Mar Piccolo (=Little Sea) and the Mar Grande (=Big Sea). Fishing had been the main economic activity since at least the 10th century: it had brought a large income (through taxes on catches) to the Prince of Taranto until the Principality collapsed (1463), and then to the Royal Crown of Naples, which inherited the Prince's assets. This chapter describes the economic organization of these seas, the connected supervision system and the transformation brought about in the last fifteen years of the 18th and the first fifteen years of the 19th century thanks to the efforts of two "enlightened" royal administrators: Tommaso Ciura and Ignazio Maria Marrese. Their work, along with the experiments of Giuseppe Capecelatro (the "enlightened" archbishop of Taranto and a natural scientist known all over Europe), led to the incredible increase in mussel farming in the Mar Piccolo. This activity rapidly became the most important in the city, replacing fishing in the local (and royal) economy.

The reverse iconography of a Sicilian Pyrrhus’ gold issue can be linked with the exploitation of the propaganda concerning the Pyrrich victory at Heraclea as the symbols represented on this specific numismatic issue seem to indicate. This hypothesis has been verified by widening the scope of the investigation involving some other testimonies coming from the literary sources, the epigraphic field and comparisons with some representations coming from the italiote contemporary coinage. The choice of a theme that evokes Pyrrhus’ first military success in his western campaign can be explained with the great resonance of this event in the contemporary memory, that give the chance to the Epirote to reaffirm his  strategic and tactical qualities

The paper (unpublished Masterthesis) addresses the role of rare native funerary stones found in the Italian Salento area in the interpretation of a Middle-Ground culture comprised of a mix of indigenous and Greek people in a pre-colonial framework. The paper wishes to contribute to the ongoing research of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam focused on uncovering the true nature of early Greek-indigenous encounters in the Salento area, whereby a mix-culture of both parties came into being, displaying a shared heroic identity at the level of the elite.

The slide-show describes the particular situation of the fishing in Taranto: this city, built on a little island between two seas, traditionally granted a large income from fishing thanks to taxes owed to the sovereign (the Prince of Taranto until 1465, then the King of Naples). These slides particoularly focus on the changes brought in these seas by the experiments of a scientist, the archbishop Giuseppe Capecelatro, who discovered new ways to cultivate mussels and teached people of Taranto, in last 20 years of XVIII century. The long-term effect, that became evident only in 1830s, was the increasing of mussel farming that overcame the value of fishing.

Queste diapositive presentano brevemente la particolare situazione di Taranto, città nella quale la pesca aveva rivestito un ruolo di primaria importanza a partire almeno dal X secolo. Negli ultimi venti anni del XVIII secolo l'arcivescovo Capecelatro, naturalista di fama internazionale, si dedicò a esperimenti volti a estendere la mitilicoltura nel Mar Piccolo. Nel lungo periodo si osservò la crescita d'importanza esponenziale di quest'attività a danno della pesca e dei pescatori.

"Résumé. - À partir de l’étude de la distribution des formes et des modèles iconographiques de la céramique laconienne, l’auteur propose d’apporter un éclairage nouveau sur la place des peintres laconiens dans la production artistique occidentale du VIe siècle. La répartition des différents ateliers définit des réseaux commerciaux distincts à partir de grands centres comme Samos, Tarente ou Olympie. Les formes et les thèmes choisis montrent que les céramistes laconiens ont travaillé pour des clients précis qui ont transporté les vases et leurs modèles en Occident. Aux différentes aires commerciales correspondent des aires culturelles où l’iconographie laconienne a été assimilée et reprise ; ces aires ne se confondent cependant pas comme le montrent la Tombe des Taureaux de Tarquinia, le programme iconographique de l’Héraion du Sélé ou les métopes du Temple C de Sélinonte.

Abstract. - From the study of the distribution of the forms and the iconographic models of the laconian ceramic, the author suggests bringing a new lighting on the place of the laconian painters in the western artistic production of the 6th century. The distribution of the various workshops defines different commercial networks from big centres as Samos, Tarente or Olympie. The forms and the chosen subjects show that the laconian ceramists worked for precise customers who transported vases and their models in West. In the various commercial areas correspond cultural areas where the laconian iconography was likened and resumed ; these areas do not however become confused as show the Grave of the Tauruses of Tarquinia, the iconographic program of the Heraion at the Sele or the metops of the Temple C of Selinunt.

La Gens Artoria, cui faceva parte Lucio Artorio Casto, sembra avesse origini nelle regioni in Italia del Sud in Puglia e in Campania. Appare anche che tale Gens Romana provenisse da una antica origine Messapica, gli originari abitatori della Puglia e del Salento. I Messapi a loro volta sembra avessero forti legami con il territorio della Illiria, l'attuale Dalmazia e probabilmente con gruppi etnici nomadi caucasici e asiatici.

A new interpretation of an inscribed pottery sherd from Taras dating to the fifth cent. B.C. – so far interpreted as a votive dedication to Artemis Orthia – it can be identified as an anthroponym that bears the shortened name of a civic subdivision, never attested before in Taras. This minimal epigraphic evidence is particularly relevant to the history of Tarantine institutions, as it provides the first attestation of the presence of some minor subdivisions in the public organization of Taras. The paper also proposes a historical interpretation of the epigraphy within the Tarantine classical democratic context, as well as an explanation of the object as instrumentum publicum.

Mobility in the ancient Mediterranean was a recurrent catalyst for change. This is particularly evident in one of the most intense and wide-ranging phenomena that shaped the classic world: the Greek colonisation. In this study, I highlight how archaeology can be used as a privileged instrument to investigate the processes responsible for, and characteristics of, this pivotal set of encounters. To this end, I present a re-evaluation of the site of Taranto. Although highly significant for being one of the earliest cases of colonisation in southern Italy, Taranto is also one of the most problematic. Until very recently, it was believed that the arrival of the Greeks from Sparta caused an immediate expulsion of the local population, with long- lasting consequences in terms of hostile relationships between the two. Since the archaeological evidence concerning the early colony is scant at best, this picture was mainly based on ancient literature. However, a reassessment of the published archaeological evidence, together with new material from the excavation at the nearby site of l’Amastuola, suggests that a more complex, indeed even converse, situation occurred. Rather than immediate competition and/or conflict upon permanent colonisation, initial relations were more likely characterised by collaboration, if not co-existence, no doubt facilitated by the familiarity born of centuries of contact. Only once the Greeks became more established in the region and intensified their power base may relations have degenerated. I argue that these relationships can be understood by examining and comparing long-term developments throughout the Early Iron Age in the Taranto area, neighbouring areas, and Greece itself, and show that social change and the construction of identity are linked to long-term changes in the nature and intensity of these contacts.

Nel corso della seconda Guerra Punica, dopo la vittoria di Canne e la presa di Capua, il generale cartaginese Annibale aveva infatti stipulato un'alleanza antiromana con Filippo V re di Macedonia che prevedeva l'arrivo in Italia di una flotta e truppe macedoni. E quello di Taranto era allora l'unico porto in Puglia in grado di accogliere una grande flotta, non solo macedone ma anche eventuali rinforzi navali da Cartagine. A Taranto Annibale aveva guardato sempre con grande interesse e verso i tarantini aveva sempre mostrato una astuta benevolenza, rilasciando i prigionieri di guerra senza riscatto ed evitando di devastarne il territorio. Attenzione ricambiata se una delegazione di giovani tarantini lo raggiunse segretamente presso il lago Averno, in Campania, proponendogli di consegnargli la città col tradimento e il favore della fazione popolare. Annibale prometteva che avrebbe restituito alla città l'antica indipendenza e il prestigio di guida della Magna Grecia, una volta eliminato il pericolo romano. Le vicende della guerra, l'ampliamento e il moltiplicarsi dei fronti, la ripresa delle forze romane, ritardarono parecchio l'attuazione pratica di questo progetto, che giunse a compimento solo verso la fine del 213 a. C.. Grazie al tradimento di alcuni giovani tarantini, Annibale riuscì a entrare nottetempo nella città cogliendo di sorpresa il comandante del presidio romano che aveva il compito di difenderla; questi, Marco Livio Macato, riuscì solo a trovare rifugio con buona parte dei suoi soldati nell'antica acropoli fortificata. E veniamo all'estate del 210 a. C.. Taranto già da due anni era praticamente spaccata in due: da un lato la città con l'abitato, le piazze, il porto, l'agorà, il teatro, le officine e le necropoli in mano ai Cartaginesi di Annibale e ai tarantini della fazione popolare che avevano favorito l'ingresso in città del comandante cartaginese, sottraendosi al controllo romano. Dall'altro l'acropoli, l'attuale città vecchia ma allora molto più ristretta, in cui si era asserragliato il presidio militare romano comandato da Marco Livio Macato, con qualche gruppo di soldati giunti da Metaponto in rinforzo, e molti degli aristocratici tarantini con le loro famiglie. Perché Taranto era chiaramente divisa in due grandi fazioni: gli aristocratici, in genere proprietari terrieri, erano filoromani, convinti che fosse più utile una collaborazione col Senato di Roma, composto da aristocratici e possidenti come loro e quindi disponibili alla 1

L’articolo prende in considerazione alcuni aspetti linguistici della nota iscrizione della Tabula Veliterna, una lex sacra in lingua volsca, al fine di evidenziare gli aspetti giuridico-istituzionali che essa pone. Infatti, sebbene il testo sia stato ampiamente studiato, restano insoluti alcuni nodi linguistici, cui sono necessariamente collegati problemi ermeneutici di natura più generale, che investono l’interpretazione complessiva della legge (es. oggetto della legge, organo promulgatore, etc.). The paper takes into account some linguistic aspects of the famous inscription on the Tabula Veliterna, a lex sacra in Volscian language, in order to investigate the related juridical and institutional aspects. In fact, although the text was extensively studied, some linguistic issues remain unsolved, implying the persisting of hermeneutic aspects that involve the overall interpretation of the law (e.g. the topic of the law, the institution in charge of its redaction, and so forth).

The contribution is based on the study of noble palaces in the historic centre of Taranto, built between 1600 and 1700. These large buildings often impose their profile on already occupied terrain, incorporating existing houses in a new, unique palace. The survey and the comparative study of the architectural features has highlighted the characteristic any foundational elements of the architectural composition of these buildings. The palace projects had often a series of invariants related to the presence of paradigmatic elements such as, for example, a particular care in the design and setting of monumental portals , the constant presence of a courtyard or distributional atrium, experimentation in the design of staircase module. The analysis took place through a series of campaigns of relief carried out during 2013 throughout the urban fabric of the old city of Taranto. This analysis interest morphological and typological aspects of 20 important noble palaces located along the principal axis of the ancient Taranto, highlighting and updating each case, the structural and technological problems of each building.
