History of Transilvania

Az SZTE Klasszika-Filológiai és Neolatin Tanszéke, a Tiszántúli Református Egyházkerület Levéltára, valamint az MTA-ELTE Humanizmus Kelet-Közép-Euró pában Lendület Kutatócsoport és az MTA BTK Irodalomtudományi Intézet szervezésében 2017. december 7-9. között Debrecenben került sor a III. Neolatin Konferenciára. A tanácskozást a két korábbihoz hasonlóan jelentős szakmai érdek-lődés övezte, amit az is jelez, hogy a konferencia két és fél napja alatt több mint harminc előadás hangzott el a reformáció és a katolikus megújulás latin nyelvű irodalmának tárgykörében. A kötetben, mely a Convivia Neolatina Hungarica-sorozat harmadik darabja, az előadások alapján készült tanulmányok szerkesztett változata olvasható. A konfe-rencia szekcióinak logikáját követve csoportosított tanulmányok több aspektusból vizsgálják a protestáns vagy katolikus szellemiségű latin nyelvű kultúra világát. Ol-vashatók a kötetben tanulmányok a konfesszionalizálódás történetírásra gyakorolt hatásáról, több tanulmány foglalkozik a latin nyelvű biblikus költészettel, vagy ép-pen az antik tradíciók tovább élésével a protestáns poézisben. Nem marad említés nélkül Pázmány és a jezsuiták latin nyelvű irodalmi hagyatéka sem, a gazdag anya-got pedig továbbszínesítik a latin nyelven megszólaló egyházkritikának, illetve a heterodox gondolkodásnak szentelt izgalmas tanulmányok. A szerkesztők azzal a reménnyel bocsátják útjára a kötetet, hogy még a 2017-es reformációs emlékév különösen gazdag tudományos termésének ellenére is tud újat mondani és értékes információkkal szolgálni a téma iránt érdeklődő közönségnek. A 20. század közepétől Európa-szerte a latin gyökerekhez kap-csolódó, közös műveltségbeli alapok megállapítására irányuló törekvések magukkal hozták a neolatin kutatások általános ki-bontakozását és elterjedését. E stúdiumok az utóbbi években Magyarországon is örvendetes lendületet vettek, egyre többen és egyre szélesebb tárgykörben foglalkoznak idehaza a neolatin irodalomhoz tartozó szövegek-kel. Ezt felismerve a Hungaria Latina Magyar Neolatin Egyesü-let a szorosabb és főleg rendsze-resebb szakmai együttműködés előse gí té se érdekében 2013 őszén a neo latin tanulmányoknak szen-telt konferenciasorozatot indított. A kétévente megrendezendő ta-nácskozások a szervezőbizottság tervei szerint minden alkalommal egy-két meghatározott témát állí-tanak a középpontba, és az eddigi eredmények számbavételén túl hozzájárulnak új kutatási irányok kijelöléséhez, fontos és kevéssé kutatott források, forráscsopor-tok feldolgozásához. Jelen kötet a fentiek szelle-mében 2017. december 7-9. kö-zött Debrecenben megrendezett A reformáció és a katolikus megújulás latin nyelvű irodalma című konferen-cián elhangzott előadások szer-kesztett változatát tartalmazza. Monografie a orașului Mediaș din județul Sibiu, prezentând detaliat evoluția istorică, economică și culturală a orașului.
Cuvintele autorului: Lucrarea de față am scris-o cu mintea, dar și cu inima... Conținutul ei, plămădit în sufletul meu, este ofranda pe care o aduc orașului meu – o carte de învățătură pentru fiecare medieșean. Ea va ajuta pe oricine dorește să-și cunoască mai bine strămoșii și orașul și, cunoscându-l, să-l iubească, pentru că este Mediașul nostru.

Este al șaselea volum consacrat Anchetei Astrei, efectuată în 1922. Cu acest volum, se încheie seria „Rapoartelor”  cunoscute în prezent. Transcrierea „Rapoartelor” a fost însoțită, ca și în volumele precedente, de ample analize statistice referitoare la desfășurarea evenimentelor revoluționare din 1918-1919, la organizarea gărzilor naționale și la participarea românilor la Adunarea Națională de la Alba Iulia, în 18 noiembrie/1 decembrie 1918.

La actual Rumania es el resultado de la unión de los tres principados danubianos: Valaquia, Moldavia y Transilvania, cuya población de origen dacio se vio afectada por su estratégica situación geográfica, situada entre el occidente europeo y el oriente otomano.
Se analiza las diferentes fases de su historia, su composición étnica en especial desde el punto de vista de una nobleza guerrera. Se completa explicando su heráldica con sus especiales matices.

Im Laufe der archäologischen Ausgrabungsarbeiten in der Brooser Burg, konnten Bewohnungsspuren aus dem 8.-9. Jh. festgestellt werden, über die, im 10.-11. Jh. eine Burg mit Erdwall und Palisade errichtet wurde. In der ersten Hälfte des 12. Jh., wurde diese  Burg durch einen Rechteckigen Steinturm (Bergfried) verstärkt. In derselben Zeitspanne hatte man auf dem Erdwall eine Steinkapelle mit kreisförmigem Grundriss (Rotunde) errichtet. Die Kapelle war mit einer kreisförmigen Krypta versehen. Um die mitte des 12. jh., wird der Bau erweitert, und im 14. Jh. als Wehrturm umgebaut. Die Krypta wird nach dem Bau der gotischen Kirche als Beinhaus, (Karner) benutzt. Im 19. Jh., wurde der zu Ruine verfallener Bau als Kalkgrube und schlieslich als Schuttgrube genutzt.

Explicaţia acestei lucrari este una minimala: aceea de a stabili modul în care oraşul medieval transilvanean s-a definitivat şi apoi s-a transformat în oraşul baroc şi modern. De aici derivă nuanţele reţinute de titlul lucrării, dar şi alte câteva nuanţe aduse de realitatea istoriografică şi conceptuală a studierii oraşelor din România.

Sibiul a fost un oraș al Evului Mediu european. De la nașterea sa, la dezvoltarea sa, la fortificarea sa și la transformarea sa în orașul de astăzi, povestea Sibiului este o poveste a unui oraș tipic pentru Evul Mediu Occidental.

Sibiu was a typical European Medieval town. From its birth through its life until its fortification and its development into the present city, the story of Sibiu is the story of any other Medieval city.

VON DREI GEISTLICHEN VOM XVIII JHR.
Summary



Das ist ein Versuch zum Vergleich zwischen “Istorija Slawjanobolgarska” (1762), der Geschichte des Paters Blasius Kleiner (1761) und der Geschichte der katholischen Pfarrergemeinde des Dorfes Alt Beschenov – das groeste bulgarische Dorf im Banater Gebiet.

Der Parallelismus zwischen den beiden Werken der bulgarischen katholischen Historigraphie und das beste Beispiel der bulgarischen Geschichte des XVIII Jhs. – die Schrift des Paters Paisij – hat diese Gruende: das Thema der Texte ist die ruhmreiche Vergangenheit Bulgariens; die Autoren sind christliche Geistliche; die Zeit, in der sie geschrieben sind, ist fast dieselbe; im unterschiedlichen Masse haben sie einen programmatischen Charakter und eine erziehrische Mission. In den drei Geschichten sind unterschiedliche Meinungen vertreten: – ueber die Herkunft, die Annahme der Christentum von den Bulgaren, die Paulikaner, die Eroberung der bulgarischen Laender durch die Osmanen.

Based on scattered finds, besides the well‑known Ist (1889) and IInd (1968/1969) “princely” graves in Apahida (Romania, Cluj County), dated to the Gepidic age (5–6 centuries AD) (Pl. I), there must have been a IIIrd princely grave there. Apart from these scattered finds, a sealring with a monogram (symbolum), found in Apahida – and kept in the Hungarian National Museum – (Pl. II/1–3) refers to the same.
The retrograde monogram on the ring indicates that the sealring was not only a personal jewel, but also a functional tool used for authentication. Although the ring’s precise site in Apahida is unclear, it is still interpreted in connection to the Ist grave of Onachar, as a similar reading of the monogram is suggested to the one [Ona(c)har|us, cf. Szabó 2020a‑b] that stands on the namering. As the letter O of the namering does not appear in the monogram, and the letter M of the monogram does not appear on the namering, the presumption of identical names in case of
the two rings can undoubtedly be turned down. Based on its shape, the monogram is a block or box monogram, which can be dated to the period between the 5th and 7th century AD (Pl. III/1).
According to the characteristics of the monogram type, it shows every letter of the word and each letter appears only once. Monograms from this period usually contain either personal names or office names, with genitive ending. Due to these reasons as well, the former readings: Marc(us) [J. Hampel], Audomariuς [I. Bóna], Marιaς [J. Spier], Omacar(?) [C. H. Opreanu] are not adequate.
Former literature suggested and used Latin and Greek as reading languages for the monogram. A Greek reading must be considered because there might be a Σ i.e. C (i.e. sigma lunata) letter, on
the right side of the imprinted monogram (Pl. III/2). Based on the structure of the monogram and the reading rules of the monogram type, furthermore with regards to all the solutions provided by
the identifiable letters conjoined in alphabetical order, the monogram gives the Latin MAVRICI (nom. Mauricius or Mauricus as well) reading (Pl. III/3, 5). A not likely, speculative Greek MAΥPIΣI (nom. Mαυρις) solution (Pl. III/4) could be considered at most a Graecism because of
the Latin ‑i instead of a Greek ‑ou for the genitive ending. The “Germanized” nominative version of the name without the Latin ending is MAVRIC (Mauric). Until now, the name was unknown
in Germanic milieu. The ‑ric (‑rik, ‑rich) ending might have contributed to the use of the name in Germanic milieu.
The sealring was made in a Christian milieu, and its owner was probably a Christian, which is indicated by the long- or Latin cross (crux immissa) on the ring head over the monogram (Pl. III/1).
Based on the cross and in the context of the Age (5th-6th centuries AD), it is uncertain whether the ring‑owner belonged to the Roman, Byzantine or Arian church. I have found no long- or Latin cross paired with a Greek monogram, consequently the ring and its owner must be of Western
origin. His name may be related to the soldier martyr Mauricius from Agaunum (Saint‑Maurice, Valais canton, Switzerland) and the spreading popularity of his cult among Christians. The name refers to the centre and point of origin of the St. Mauricius (Saint Maurice) cult, the territory of the
Burgundian Kingdom, conquered by the Francs in the first quarter of the 6th century AD. Compared to the western Germanic type of the finds, namely the artefacts from the Ist‑IInd‑IIIrd(?) “princely” graves from Apahida [cf. Gáll et alii 2017, 26–28, nos. 9–10, 11–13], it can
be assumed, that Mauric from Apahida – who can be examined in the same context –, was a western Germanic regulus who fled either from internal political conflict or from the Franc conquest. Similarly to the regulus “Onachar from Apahida” [Ona(c)har|us ≈ Aunacharius, cf. Szabó
2020a‑b], who – based on his name and personal artefacts – had also western Germanic connections, Mauric i.e. Mauricius or Mauricus also settled in the confine of the Gepidic world. He might not only have had a role in the appearance of the eastern Merovingian culture in Transylvania
[cf. Dobos 2019], but also in the rise of the settlement in Apahida or its vicinity as a regional political‑administrative centre. The damages on the surface of the sealring with monogram indicate its presumably longer usage in a kind of “chancellery” practice.

Sibiu was a typical European Medieval town. From its birth through its life until its fortification and its development into the present city, the story of Sibiu is the story of any other Medieval city.

The studies of this volume concern Polish-Hungarian and Polish-Transylvanian relations in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the first paper, with reference both to older scholarship and recent research on the history of borderlands, I analyze the character and role of the Polish-Hungarian borderland. I ask how it was influenced by the natural environment and how it shaped mutual relations between the countries on both sides of the Carpathian Mountains.  My conclusion is that this borderland was quite stable politically (despite the proximity to the turbulent Habsburg-Ottoman border) and remained a region of exchange, connected through numerous social, ethnic and economic ties. The western part of the borderland was a more easily accessible area (with more convenient mountain passes), cultivated and colonized earlier than the Eastern Carpathians. It influenced the number of trade routes and intensity of exchange. A special role was played by the Szepes (Spiš) region, which receives less attention here only due to the general character of the paper and many recent historical studies.
Three papers refer to two remarkable figures in Polish-Hungarian/Polish-Transylvanian relations in the early modern period: John Sigismund Zapolya (Szapolyai, 1540-1571), first Prince of Transylvania, and Stephen Báthory, his successor as a Prince of Transylvania, then King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania (1576-1586). I examine the way in which they were perceived by contemporaries. In the case of John Sigismund Zapolya, I describe how the image of the ruler, who died young, was shaped by his followers in the first years after his death, that is, in the 1570s and 1580s, and how the commemoration served the emerging political identity of Transylvania in the context of close Polish-Transylvanian ties during the reign of Báthory. An essential factor was the religious (Protestant, especially Unitarian) motivation of the apologists. This was accompanied by their religious and political goals together with moral issues (e.g. the commonly used notions of fortune and loss through which the reign of John Sigismund was interpreted). The paper is based on a survey of historiographical and literary works mainly by Christian Schesaeus (neolatin epic historiography), András Valkai (popular historiographical poems in Hungarian), Demeter Csanádi, Jan Gruszczyński (moralistic, commemorative texts) and Johannes Sommer with references to other authors as well.
Subsequently, in a paper on King Stephen Báthory I show the contemporary polemics on his rule, in particular the controversies that arose in the years 1584-1585 and in the first years after the king’s death. In this period, Báthory was faced with serious criticism due to his harsh conflict with the Zborowski family. I argue here mainly with evidence of contemporary political journalism. The fact of the foreign origin of the king and his support for Hungarian compatriots in Poland-Lithuania was also raised, just as in the first years following Báthory’s death in 1586. This image changed only gradually later. In the next paper I show this process, using the example of literary texts known as “kings’ catalogues” (icones, imagines), which shaped popular historical knowledge until the 18th century. It was much because of this sort of text why the representation of the king evolved to result in an image of a brave and wise ruler, almost overwhelming in the Polish historical memory of the subsequent centuries. This image also contained stereotypes of Hungarians (appearance, character), partly derived from the ‘Hunnic’ tradition and the parallel between Báthory and Attila. Decisive was the impact of contemporary events, primarily the Polish-Muscovite wars of the 17th century.
To sum up, the papers contribute to a more nuanced history of the Polish-Hungarian relations and stereotypes, but refer to more general questions about the commemoration of a ruler (Herrschermemoria) in early modern Europe.

his monograph entails a comparative study of two early modern urban centers in Transylvania: Cluj (Kolozsvár, Klausenburg) and Sibiu (Nagyszeben, Hermannstadt). It develops a new perspective on urban history in Transylvania, by filling the recent historiographical lacuna on early modern urban elites. This book attempts to combine traditional and modern research methods, by analyzing and comparing a large volume of unpublished data along three research lines. First, the historical background within which of the town elites in Cluj and Sibiu monopolized power are analyzed, including the development of town autonomy and governmental systems, the legal background of urban leadership, its continuity and the conditions under which the political urban elite acted in each town. Secondly, a thorough archontological and prosopographical research, with a special focus on marriage strategies and professional competence leads to a socio-political characterization of the elites of Cluj and Sibiu. Finally, an attempt is made to provide insight into the representation and self-fashioning of these elites.

Ágnes Flóra studied history and art history in Cluj-Napoca (Romania), and then followed an MA training in medieval studies at the Central European University in Budapest, where she defended her PhD thesis in 2014. She currently works at the Romanian National Archives in Cluj. Her major field of interest is medieval and early modern urban history, development of urban governments, formation of elites and urban identity.

The manuscript has three main chapters, an introductory chapter, conclusions, bibliography and index of names.

The introductory chapter starts with the definitions of terms used in the text along with a short review of the elite theories with references to Max Weber, Norbert Elias, Gaetano Mosca or Vilfredo Pareto. This part is followed by the presentation of the aims and of the methodology pursued during the research. The presentation of the sources was split into two categories: unpublished primary sources and edited documents. Subsequently, the historiographical traditions on the topic - both in Hungary/Romania and international - are discussed.

The first main chapter is titled 'Respublica – res publica' and it is structured on three subchapters and thirteen sub-sub chapters. The first section (1.1.) is dedicated to the legal and institutional framework within which the urban elites of Cluj and Sibiu operated. The main objective of this section is to acquaint the readers with the beginnings of urban government and autonomy in the two towns in order to discuss the whole process of elite formation from the medieval period until the early modern. I have tried here to cutback some erroneously interpreted historical facts that has been reproduced time and again in scholarly works without any constructive criticism. A second section explores the structures of the town governments in the sixteenth century (1.2.), the history of the main urban offices and their legal context. A third section ends this chapter by having a closer look on the forces that might have interfered with the process of elite formation or disturbed it. Following Karen Lambrecht’s theory, elite formation is studied in relation to the court, the Church, the Reformation movements, university and multi-ethnicity. This part gives a deeper insight on the political, religious and ethnic realities of the region in the sixteenth century.

The second main chapter ('Magistri rei publicae') focuses on the archontological and propographical research on the urban elites. First, the legal, moral and material criteria of eligibility in public offices are discussed. Presenting several case studies, the second part makes a statistical and analytical presentation of the career building and power concentration in a comparative way. The following two subchapters investigate the 'cursus honorum' (the advancement of public office-holders within the ranks of the town council) and the networking strategies of the local elites (2.4.). This section leads to some intriguing aspects of power concentration within the local elites, family-networks and business relations are revealed. This main chapter concludes in an analytical subchapter dealing with the question whether the governing elites in Cluj and Sibiu can be categorized as a patrician communities or not (2.5).

The third part of this book ('Shaping self- and communal identity') is dedicated to the self-fashioning, and by that, to the communal individuation through the representation of the elites. Two main aspects are discussed here: the rituals and the ceremonies of the council election, constituted by a strong interaction between town and elites, and the erudite self-representation of the leaders through art and architecture.

The book is provided with a concluding chapter, a vast bibliography and an index of names.

Politicienii români de origine transilvăneană, printre care Petru Groza (1884-1958) și Alexandru Vaida-Voevod (1872-1950), au jucat un rol important în istoria României în secolul al XX-lea. Amândoi s-au născut și au crescut în Transilvania în perioada dualismului austro-ungar și au fost strâns legați de națiunea maghiară pentru tot restul vieții lor. Cu toate acestea, au avut cariere politice foarte diferite, iar memoriile lor istorice în România de astăzi contrastează între ele.

In the 18 th c., the imperial portrait was an important instrument of propaganda, not only as painting of different dimensions, but also as a medal. Sometimes imperial medals were Mounted in a necklace, the medals were used also as a sign of an official dignity. Among them, of a particular importance are the coronation medals, because they were conferred to the most appreciated high officials, usually just at the occasion of their presence at the coronation ceremony, but maybe also when they came to Vienna to pay homage to their sovereign. Aiming not only to express loyalty towards the Imperial and Royal House in the most obvious way, but also as a sign of the highest favour, they were sometimes depicted in the portraits of the representatives of the Transylvanian elites. To be remembered by their fellow citizens for their loyalty towards the Crown, the heads of the Transylvanian Saxon delegations sent to Vienna to pay homage to the new monarchs used to order portraits ďapparat, whose inscriptions mention these events, as well as the names of the donors.

This paper is intended to be a small contribution to the research of Transylvania. I want to capture the evolution of the population between the 17 th and 18 th centuries. This period captures the transition of Transylvania from the status of an autonomous Principality under Ottoman suzerainty to that of a Grand Principality, as an integral part of the Habsburg Empire. This transition from a suzerain state under the influence of a peripheral European, Muslim empire, with all its requirements, to the province of a Christian, Catholic, Central European empire brought to Transylvania major changes from a political, military, economic, cultural, and obviously social perspective. This article aims to provide a small image on this phenomenon.

Philanthropy is an attribute of the Church since the apostolic period, its philanthropic work varying throughout history depending on the political evolution, social, cultural and religious transformations of society, but especially on the charism of the church servants, from all hierarchical levels, and members of the laity. Public and private charitable foundations, as institutionalized expression of philanthropy and Christian charity appeared in medieval Europe, but went through a crisis during the Reformation, experiencing a revitalization in the late eighteenth century and a remarkable flourishing in the nineteenth
century. The first philanthropic foundations appeared in the Transylvanian Orthodox Church in the first half of the 19th century. Until the Great Union of 1918, most Romanian charitable foundations were created, patronized and administered by the two Romanian Churches, all Romanian philanthropists being more or less connected to parishes, dioceses and metropolises. This study presents the development of
Orthodox foundations and the great Orthodox philanthropists in Transylvania, listing the funds and charitable foundations that functioned within the Archdiocese of Transylvania until 1918.

The following article, published in the volume "Religiöse Erinnerungsorte in Ostmitteleuropa" (2013), depicts the history of the Greek Catholic Church in Transylvania from its beginnings in Alba Iulia (1697) until the present, discussing its various disputes with the Orthodox Church as well as with the Communist Regime and the current situation in Romania.

Raoul Bossy (1894-1975) a két világháború közötti és második világháború alatti időszak jelentős román diplomatája.  Magyar szempontból is figyelemreméltó, ám mindezidáig a történész szakmától kellő figyelmet nem kapó személyiségről van szó, aki bőséges emlékirat- és naplófolyamot hagyott az utókorra. Emlékiratait emigrációban írja és tulajdonképpen a teljes diplomáciai pályafutását átfogja. Naplóját 1927-1969 között vezeti. Román kiadásban olvashatjuk az 1940-1969 közötti bejegyzéseket.
A tanulmány az 1940-1944 között írt naplót vizsgálja. Abban a szerencsés helyzetben vagyunk, hogy a berlini időszakából angolul az emlékirata, románul pedig a naplója áll rendelkezésünkre. Ez lehetőséget ad az egybevetésre.
Bossy nem csupán emlékiratát, hanem naplóját is jól érzékelhetően a remélt leendő olvasóinak írja. Tehát egy olyan követ képét tárja elénk, aki olykor már halált megvető bátorsággal képviseli a román érdekeket.
Bossy tehetséges karrierdiplomata volt, akinek személyét a nemzetközi diplomáciai testületben is tisztelték. Ennek révén kerül kulcspozíciókba, ám tragédiája mégis az, hogy pozitív adottságai ellenére hazájának területi veszteségeit a római követi székből szemléli. Aztán egy rövid svájci szolgálat után megkapja azt a berlini posztot, ami egy román diplomata számára abban az időben csakis ambivalenciával járhatott.
Ez a kettősség köszön vissza naplójának bejegyzéseit is olvasva, amelyből kitűnik, hogy Bossy a szövetséges német felekben mégis az ellenséget látja. Az alapvetően demokratikus beállítottságú követet egy idő után a bizalmatlanság veszi körül német és román oldalról egyaránt.
Írásunkban azt vizsgáljuk, hogy mely magyar személyekkel állt kapcsolatban Bossy, róluk milyen képet alakított ki; és bemutatjuk, hogy Berlinben hogyan tudta hazája érdekeit képviselni Észak-Erdély és Bánát ügyében.
Mindez abból a szempontból is fontos, hogy lássuk: az egyéni, ám nemzeti érdeket képviselő törekvések mennyire ki vannak téve annak a nemzetközi erőtérnek, amelyben mozognak.

Egy erdélyi napilap esete a magyar katonai közigazgatással 1940-ben a tanulmány az 1940. őszi észak-erdélyi sajtóviszonyok átalakulását kíséri nyomon, illetve az e mögött meghúzódó célokat igyekszik feltárni. a magyarországhoz visszacsatolt terület sajtóéletére nemcsak az ott is hatályossá vált zsidótörvények voltak hatással: a kormány igyekezett beszüntetni a nem magyar nyelvű, illetve az ellenzékinek minősített lapokat is. ez az írás egy konkrét eseten keresztül azt mutatja be, hogy a helyi magyar elit miként játszotta ki e rendelkezéseket, illetve hogyan biztosította érdekeit, adott esetben kiszorítva a magyarországi pártérdeket. Az 1940. augusztus 30-án meghozott második bécsi döntést követően a magyar honvédség birtokba vette a Magyarországnak visszajutatott észak-erdélyi területeket. A korábbi gyakorlatnak megfelelően a terület kormányzását a kezdeti hónapokban a hadsereg gyakorolta. Észak-Erdélyben a katonai közigazgatás, amely 1940. szeptember 5-e és november 26-a között működött, megfellebbezhetetlen rendeletek segítségével történő, leegyszerűsített kormányzást jelentett. A fontosabb tisztségeket a hadsereg tagjai töltötték be. A katonai közigazgatás struktúrája ugyanakkor kettősségre épült: minden szinten – járási, vármegyei és hadsereg – működött a helyi parancsnokok mellett a budapesti minisztériumok által delegált szaktanácsadók testülete, a döntéseket ezzel konzultálva kellett volna meghozni. A katonai közigazgatást végig a katonai és a polgári elem konfliktusa jellemezte, és a helyi parancsnokok sok esetben inkább a helyi magyarságból választottak maguk mellé " tanácsadókat " , akik érdekeiknek megfelelően igyekeztek befolyásolni őket. A katonai közigazgatás elsődleges feladata a nyugalom és rend fenntartása, illetve a terület ellá-tásának biztosítása volt, azonban a parancsnokok az eredeti utasítást messze túlhaladva igyekeztek minden felmerülő problémát " megoldani ". A katonai közigazgatás időszakának egyik problémája az, hogy bizonyos szempontból túl hosszúra nyúlt, a teljes folyamatok és változások elemezéséhez viszont túl rövid. A kulturális életben is érzékelhetők a pozitív változás jelei, ugyanakkor megmutatkoznak már a problémák is. Az egész folyamat végigkövetése csak egy hosszabb periódus vizsgálatával lehetséges, ezért itt inkább csak a folyamatok felvillantására törekszünk, és konkrét történéseket, esetleges törésvonalakat mutatunk be egy esettanulmányba ágyazva. A katonai közigazgatás konfliktusokkal terhes időszakában a legpozitívabb fejlemények a kultúra terén figyelhetők meg. A " magyar tér " kialakítására irányuló törekvések már az első napokban megindultak. A nagyvárosokban az utcák és a kirakatok feliratait magyarra cserélték, újra megnyílhattak a magyar egyesületek és színházak, a hivatalokban is a magyar vált a kommunikáció nyelvévé. Ezzel párhuzamosan azonban a román újságok még a bevonulás előtt megszűntek, vagy a katonai közigazgatás tiltotta be őket, és a menekülés következtében a magyar nyelv vált az uralkodóvá az utcán és az éttermek teraszain. Tanulmányunk egy konkrét eset bemutatása mellett a működési elvet kívánja körbejárni. Arra a kérdésre keresünk választ, hogyan és mire próbálta felhasználni a katonai közigazgatás az észak-erdélyi magyar sajtót. Hogyan befolyásolta a sajtónyilvánosságot azáltal, hogy lapokat engedélyezett vagy tiltott be?
