Research Question:
What are the factors affecting shrimp production in India and what is the global impact of this?

Objective:
The main objective of this paper is to examine the Indian Shrimp Industry and see how recent changes have affected its output levels. In simple terms, shrimp farming is a sector under aquaculture that deals with the cultivation of shrimps and prawns for human consumption. Intense production and cultivation of shrimps over the past few years has brought up many diseases, and the continuous use of anti-microbial agents has caused adverse effects to human health. In this paper, I will probe further into the details of the shrimp production industry in India. I will also find out a little about the global shrimp industry in relation to India. Possible ways to deal with the issues will also be looked at. This topic came across my mind while I was discussing the dynamic of the shrimp industry with my uncle who also happens to deal with shrimp farming in his estate. This is why he had a lot of knowledge in the field and so it interested me to delve further into the details.

The research question investigated in this Politics Extended Essay is: To What Extent is the U.S Justified in Using the PATRIOT Act to Protect National Security? First, the PATRIOT Act was studied by browsing through summaries of the act as well as the official act itself. Every title and subsection were looked at, but only the useful information was reported in the investigation due to the word constraint. Secondly, a framework needed to be established to study the question. The modern social contract theory was chosen for its recurring, reasonable judgment on the function between a government and its citizens. Specifically, John Locke’s and Thomas Hobbes’ perspectives of modern social contract theory was chosen. These two were chosen for their more modern approach on the social contract theory, as well as their similarities and differences from each other. Despite their differences, both theories prove the conclusion the U.S should weigh their citizens safety over their privacy rights. Besides just looking at political theories, both sides of the PATRIOT Act debate were uncovered. Arguments and examples were evaluated to ensure that the topic was completely covered. A diversity of sources from official court documentation to news articles were used to analyze PATRIOT Act incidents. In the duration of the research, two lawsuits involving the PATRIOT Act were filed. Both cases were closely examined by looking through official timelines of the court. Lists and descriptions of twenty-nine foiled terrorist plots from 2001 through 2011 and fifty foiled terrorist plots between 2001 and 2012 were evaluated to understand the positive results of the PATRIOT Act.

IB Economics Extended Essay May 2016:

The assumption that international school tuition centers experience high barriers to entry and have the possibility of earning abnormal profits suggest that this industry might result in welfare loss within the Hong Kong economy. Hence, I am interested to find out “What market structure best represents international school tuition centers in Hong Kong?”

Surveys were conducted with international school students. Results indicate that the industry has a CR3 = 85.8% with NTK, ITS and HKExcel as the three dominant firms, relying on non-price competition. In order to discover how these firms established brand loyalty and what are the different rules and barriers to entry involved, interviews were conducted with former and current employees of the dominant centers. Locations of the tuition centers were also investigated. Geographical patterns suggested that Hotelling’s Law is applicable to this industry, therefore suggesting an oligopolistic nature. However, the PED for tuition services seems to be elastic and the prices charged for the courses across the three main firms show minimal evidence of price rigidity or competition, suggesting that the industry shows features of a monopolistic competition. Little evidence of collusive behavior implies that the industry has minimal risk of being prosecuted under the Competition Ordinance.

Overall, the international school tuition center industry is an oligopolistic market showing features of a monopolistic competition. However, this imperfect competitive market demonstrates that there is market failure. Since tuition is taking resources away from mainstream education, financial resources going into tuition can perhaps be redirected into school education so the quality of school-based education can improve.

My aim in this essay is to find a mathematical correlation between Lucky’s barks and his motivational changes through Fourier Analysis.

El presente trabajo realiza un análisis de la aplicación de la tecnología en la enseñanza de las matemáticas, más específicamente, en el cálculo de límites de funciones de una variable, y realizando una comparación con el método de enseñanza tradicional. La pregunta es, ¿En qué medida las aplicaciones móviles influyen en el aprendizaje de los estudiantes de tercero de bachillerato de la Unidad Educativa “Dr. Teodoro Alvarado Olea” con respecto al cálculo de límites?

El motivo de esta investigación es que se ha notado que los docentes explican el módulo referente al cálculo de límites de funciones de una variable con el método de enseñanza tradicional. Con esto, los alumnos aprenden de una forma sistemática, es claro que entienden cómo es el tema, pero cuando es momento de realizar ejercicios por ellos mismos para practicar, no saben cómo hacerlo. Por ello, me cuestioné cómo la aplicación de la tecnología podría tener una influencia dentro del aprendizaje. El enfoque de este trabajo es analizar los resultados del aprendizaje de los alumnos con respecto a la forma tradicional y los obtenidos con el uso de las aplicaciones para calcular límites de funciones de una variable. This paper attempts to derive a NACA configuration for the optimal airfoil for a General Aviation aircraft using an online simulation platform from NASA. The paper evaluates dimensions pertaining to the airfoil and uses values which provide the maximum lift-to-drag ratio for each dimension and also considers three different phases of flight, i.e., takeoff, cruise and descent.

A small gravity car was constructed using waste cds for wheels, sketch pens for axles, and a thermocol box for body of the car. Different weights were hung from the fixed pulley attached to the body of the car. The other end of the string holding the weights was attached to the front axle of the car by means of a needle fixed to the axle. When the weight fell down, the stored gravitational potential energy got converted into translational and rotational kinetic energy and some energy also got dissipated as heat due to friction in the axles.
Videos of the motion of the gravity car for 3 trials each for 5 different loads were taken and analysed using TRACKER software. Using TRACKER, the position and velocity of the gravity car and load were tracked as a function of time. This raw data was processed to analyse the motion of the gravity car in different ways. The acceleration and deceleration of the car were calculated. The acceleration of the car was found to increase with increasing load, and the deceleration was found to be almost independent of load. The energy transformation from gravitational to rotational and translational kinetic energy was found to vary linearly with distance fallen by the load. The distance travelled by the gravity car was found to be proportional to the distance fallen by the load during the same time. The downward acceleration of the load was calculated and found to increase with increase in load. The ratio of rotational kinetic energy to translational kinetic energy was predicted to decrease with increasing load, and the slope of the rotational kinetic energy vs translational kinetic energy matched the predicted value perfectly for each of the five loads tested.

This extended essay for the IB program evaluates the extent in which we can perceive Lord Voldemort as the misunderstood tragic hero of the Harry Potter series, rather than as the villainous archetype he is famously portrayed to be. To accomplish this, I at first establish the cultural particularity of Western morals the book is based in through analysis of its historical and axiological origins to introduce the lack of absoluteness and complexity when depicting Lord Voldemort as ‘bad guy’, as well as to introduce the underlining presence of Ancient Greek thought in the series.
This further helps establish the second argument that presents classic Aristotelian tragedy, as seen in Greek plays, in order to demonstrate the numerous resemblances Voldemort possesses with many of these iconic fallen heroes. Such supports the justification that he is further misunderstood when the reader does not realize such. This is notably done by recurrently running parallels between him and Lucifer from Paradise Lost.
Finally, with the help of scholarly articles analyzing and criticizing stereotypes found in popular literary media, I further evaluate the dynamic between the hero, Harry Potter, and the villain, Lord Voldemort, in order to demonstrate the manner relationships such as these reinforce the reader’s perception of villainy in Voldemort, while overlooking key factors that illustrate the depth of the character and tragedy of his actions.
Through the use of these three arguments, and the wide range of different moral and cultural perspectives analyzed while investigating the subject, I am able to come to the conclusion that Lord Voldemort is undoubtedly a fallen hero who is mistaken for a villain, adding to the tragedy of his striking character.

В этом эссе будут рассмотрены схожести и различия этих двух произведений с целью ответить на вопрос:

«Кто такой Лайт Ягами: «новый» Раскольников или?..»

В основном это исследование состоит из моего собственного сравнительного литературного анализа первичных источников – двух рассматриваемых произведений, а также вторичных источников, в основном – это книги «Самообман Раскольникова» Юрия Корякина и «Death Note: Fatally Fun Facts» Казухиса Фужи и Дэниэла Комэна.

В фокусе моего исследования оказались герои Родион Раскольников и Лайт Ягами, которые видели перед собой несправедливость и болезненно на это реагировали. Именно социальная несправедливость, как в первом, так и во втором случае была спровоцирована экономическим состоянием их стран – Российской Империи XIX века  и Японии XXI.

Находя некоторые несоответствия в идеях двух главных персонажей, я обращал внимание на остальных действующих лиц, идеи которых также частично сравнимы с идеями Ягами и Раскольникова по части морали: это понятия о бескорыстии и угрызения совести из-за нарушения этой самой морали.

Мною будут рассмотрены социальные, экономические и семейные проблемы, которые побудили таких разных героев, как Родион Раскольников и Лайт Ягами встать на путь преступления и выстроить свои собственные и в то же время похожие друг на друга системы идей и взглядов.

Интересно то, что, когда им выдалась возможность совершить преступление, они продолжают оправдывать свои злодеяния антигуманными теориями. Оба персонажа приходят к выводу:  они имеют право на убийство. В этом и заключается основная направленность идей каждого из героя: самооправдание.

Очень важно обратить внимание на то, что ни автор первого, ни автор второго произведения, сами не были сторонниками подобных идей. Поэтому они смогли со всей художественной силой показать невозможность Родиона достичь величия Наполеона, а Лайта - стать «Богом нового мира».

Uluslararası Bakalorya Programı Türkçe A dersi kapsamında hazırlamış olduğum bu uzun tez çalışmasında Latife Tekin’in Sevgili Arsız Ölüm adlı eserinde, köyden kente göçün karakterler üzerindeki etkisini ve bu etkinin karakter çizimine ne şekilde yansıdığını inceledim. Çalışmamın giriş bölümünde göç olgusunun edebî eserlerde nasıl konu edildiğini belirterek Latife Tekin’in Sevgili Arsız Ölüm adlı romanında köyden kente göçün hangi karakterlerin çizimi üzerinden ele alındığını belirttim. 
Tezimi yazmaya başlamadan önce, üzerinde çalışacağım romanın yazarı olan Latife Tekin hakkında araştırma yaparak yazarın edebî kişiliği ve eserleri ile ilgili bilgi edindim. Romanında ele aldığı köyden kente göç olgusunu eserdeki karakterler doğrultusunda inceleyeceğim için göçün, edebî eserlerdeki yerini anlatan makaleler okudum. Yazarın eserlerinde kendi hayatını okuyucuya aktardığını öğrenerek köyden kente göçün karakterler üzerindeki etkisini, yazarın kendi masalsı anlatım tekniği doğrultusunda inceledim.
Latife Tekin’in Sevgili Arsız Ölüm adlı eserinde köyden kente göçün karakterler üzerindeki etkisini Huvat ve Dirmit karakterleri üzerinden inceledim. Eserde, göçten sonra kente uyum sağlayabilen ve sağlayamayan karakterlerin içinde bulunduğu toplumsal sıkıntı ve sorunların, karakterlerin kimlikleri üzerinden okuyucuya yansıtıldığı sonucuna vardım. Böylece yazarın köyden kente göçün karakterler üzerine etkisini kullanarak eğitimli, düşünen, sorgulayan ve merak eden bireylerin kimlik arayışını daha kolay tamamlayabileceğini okuyucuya yansıttığını gördüm ve çalışmamı bu doğrultuda sürdürdüm.

La “Unidad Educativa Fiscal Dr. Teodoro Alvarado Olea” es una
institución pública, manejada por el Ministerio de educación y descentralizada por sus distritos, establecimiento donde se prestan servicios educativos desde 8vo año de educación elemental hasta 3er año de Bachillerato, desde 1977.
En 2012 hubo cambio de autoridades ejecutivas, que generó progresos en la responsabilidad social de la institución, entre ellos un mayor interés por comprender los  problemas internos, tales como las razones de las dificultades en la comunicación descendente que afecta la gestión de la organización. Se dialogó con la vicerrectora algunas cuestiones para mejorar el clima laboral interno de la institución referente a la comunicación, mediante la siguiente pregunta:
¿De qué manera las barreras de comunicación afectan a la comunicación descendente de la institución
“Unidad Educativa Fiscal Teodoro Alvarado Olea”?

En respuesta a esta pregunta, se utilizaron marcos teóricos como documentos presentados  por el Lcdo. Alejandro Formanchuk sobre los problemas internos de la comunicación y también fuentes acerca de administración empresarial, que fueron analizados con fuentes  primarias como entrevistas a las autoridades, y encuestas a los grupos de interés interno de la institución. A partir de lo anterior, se recopilaron los datos presentados mediante un diagrama de Ishikawa para realizar una evaluación del marco teórico, junto a los datos arrojados por las fuentes primarias tales como encuestas y entrevistas, de manera que se produjo un análisis crítico acerca de la manera en que es afectada la comunicación descendente de la institución. En conclusión, se indicaron varios factores como la falta de un personal de apoyo (conserje), de falta de confianza en la comunicación descendente, y el desconocimiento de las políticas por parte del personal que afectan de manera significativa la comunicación descendente, para hacerla en cierta medida ineficiente en la institución.

This essay examines the question ‘To what extent can H.G Wells’ The Time Machine be read principally as a social critique of contemporary concerns’? The essay introduces the novel as a work of pure science fiction that presents a future initially depicted as a socialist Utopia. The essay continues by presenting the first contemporary concern expressed by Wells, which is the rapid population increase, which had taken place amongst the lower classes in his own society. Thereafter, the introduction of the Morlocks is depicted as marking the critique of the social structure in society that Wells wishes to convey through the evolution of mankind into two races. 19th century tendencies are particularly depicted by Morlocks who represent the Labor Class and have clearly lost all sense of humanity. Thus Wells’ fear about the growing gap between the upper and lower classes is emphasized. His pessimistic outlook on the future therefore also serves as a warning to contemporary readers. It is then shown that Wells also underlines his appreciation of compassion presented by the character of Weena, an Eloi, to show its importance in society hinting at its potential to lessen the segregation of classes that is fueled by Industrialization.
Furthermore, the underlying motif of fear and the first person perspective is shown to elucidate the social critique. Wells’ Social Darwinist ideals, in particular, serve to show how capitalism as well as machines is stopping the progress of human and obstructing the natural course of society governed by the ‘survival of the fittest’. By the end of the essay, the conclusion is reached that The Time Machine can undoubtedly be read as a social critique of contemporary concerns that serves to be a warning for the intelligentsia about the growing toxic influence of capitalism on society and its progress.

This investigation will aim to optimize a self-made water rocket in terms of its water
volume, such that to ensure that the rocket attains maximum height when launched
from a 90°launch angle. Intuitively, it seems that a specific volume of water for use in a
particular water rocket exists as in the case of filling the rocket with too much water, the
rocket will simply not attain maximum height due to its increased weight. Alternatively, if
the volume of water inside the rocket is much less, then the rocket will not generate enough thrust force to achieve maximum height. Hence, the purpose of my investigation will be to experimentally determine the water-to-rocket volume ratio for the water rocket such that it achieves maximum height upon launch.

Przez ponad 40 lat istnienia organizacji International Baccalaureate (IB) wdrażany był the IB Diploma Programme (program dyplomowy IB) skierowany do uczniów w wieku od 16 do 19 lat, obok the Primary Years Programmme (PYP) i the Middle Years Programme (MYP). Według danych IB w roku szkolnym 2009/2010 organizacja współpracowała z 3032 szkołami z ponad 139 krajów, oferującymi programy ponad 8,5 tys. uczniom w wieku od 3 do 19 lat. Programy te są ogromnym wyzwaniem dla wszystkich stron zaangażowanych w jego realizację. Jednym z celów programu dyplomowego jest wielozadaniowe przygotowanie ucznia do zdania egzaminu maturalnego i do dalszej edukacji na poziomie uniwersyteckim. Specyficzna formuła egzaminu oraz wymagania dotyczące oceniania decydują o sposobach pracy z uczniami nad przygotowaniem ich do egzaminu maturalnego przy jednoczesnym wzbogacaniu umiejętności poznawczych młodzieży. W artykule autor opisał ogólne zasady oceniania zewnętrznego i wewnętrznego w programie matury międzynarodowej, a następnie szczegółowo opisał zasady oceniania pojedynczego przedmiotu na przykładzie geografii. „Geografia ma ogromne walory poznawcze, praktyczne i wychowawcze. Kształci umiejętności postrzegania, oceniania oraz wyjaśniania procesów i zjawisk występujących w środowisku geograficznym, w różnorodnych skalach przestrzennych, czasowych i kulturowych.” (Piotrowska I., 2007). Jej nauczanie w dwuletnim cyklu trwania programu dyplomowego IB stwarza niepowtarzalna szansę dla ucznia bycia „pytającym, mądrym, myślącym, komunikatywnym, otwartym, troskliwym, niezależnym w opiniach, refleksyjnym”. Dążenie do takich bowiem cech ucznia zakłada program IB (Geography Guide, 2009).
W artykule przedstawiono wpływ oceniania i formy egzaminu na sposoby pracy z uczniem IB nad przygotowaniem do egzaminu maturalnego z geografii, wykorzystując studium przypadku w oparciu o 4 grupy geograficzne uczące się w III LO w Gdańsku na poziomie podstawowym i rozszerzonym w latach 2009/2010.
Podjęto jednocześnie próbę pokazania, że w programie dyplomowym IB „wychodzi się poza schematyczne myślenie o procesie nauczania i uczenia się.” (Szylko A., 2005, s. 61)

In this Extended Essay, the 1948 ‘hidden’ massacre of Hyderabad State was explored with the research question: Bloodless Revolution or a Bloody Massacre, What really happened in Hyderabad in 1948? Details of the annexation of Hyderabad State to the Union of India had been concealed until 2013 when the Sunderlal Committee Report was released to the public. The report indicated that a vast number of Muslims had been killed during and after the takeover, more than previously believed; tens of thousands more civilians died than troops in the small-scale war that annexed Hyderabad. The most prevalent information available was that during the Indian Army’s assault, Muslim denizens were caught in the crossfire.
The main doubt concerning the research question was: what exactly happened and who was responsible for this undocumented, rumoured mayhem that occurred before, during and after the integration of the Princely State of Hyderabad. Along with the Sunderlal Report the event was investigated by collating a large number of literary sources, from online articles and historians’ books. With perseverance, a primary source was found who was willing to give an interview, providing a personal account. After reviewing over 100 sources including the Sunderlal Report, much was deduced about what actually occurred. All angles were considered and evaluated: political issues, social unrest, communism and the Partition of India-Pakistan.
Thus the conclusion reached, in accordance with the Sunderlal Report, was that Hyderabad’s incorporation into the Union of India was not bloodless at all, not a massacre, but the civil war, which followed saw loss on both sides as power shifted. Actions taken in the judicial system were not as fair as they were necessary, in order to maintain peace in the subcontinent at the time. Furthermore, the concealment of the report was ethically wrong but a necessary evil.

The falling motion of a Styrofoam cup was modelled using a simulation which I programmed in Vpython .
An empty Styrofoam cup was dropped and its motion was compared with the predicted motion of three models. The first model ignored the effects of friction and considered only free fall motion. The second model added the effects of laminar drag force along with gravitational force. The third model added the effects of turbulent drag force along with gravitational force. The second model consisting of laminar drag force and gravitational force matched the actual motion of the Styrofoam cup best and the predicted terminal velocity matched very closely with the actual terminal velocity of the Styrofoam cup. The laminar drag coefficient b of the model was      0.00325 kg and the predicted terminal velocity of 1.22 ms-1 matched the terminal velocity value of        1.22 ms-1 measured using TRACKER analysis. The model was also used to make predictions about the motion of the Styrofoam cup if it had been thrown down with non-zero velocities or if it had some mass placed inside it.
