This paper deals with the short life and history of a particular command
of the R.S.I. Armed Forces. The CISU, Officers Selection Integrative Center, located in Acqui (Piedmont), was a command created to accept and put back into service Italian officers from Nazi’s concentration camps, then to become training and doctrinal development center for the counter-partisan guerrillas.

This article briefly outlines the structures and practices of Italian military discipline during the First World War. The Italian army became known for the harshness of its repressive policies, even by the standards of other contemporary armies. Italian troops continued to assert their own agency in a variety of forms of indiscipline throughout the war.

Italian performance in the First World War has been generally disparaged or ignored compared to that of the armies on the Western Front, and troop morale in particular has been seen as a major weakness of the Italian army. In this first book-length study of Italian morale in any language, Vanda Wilcox reassesses Italian policy and performance from the perspective both of the army as an institution and of the ordinary soldiers who found themselves fighting a brutally hard war. Wilcox analyses and contextualises Italy's notoriously hard military discipline along with leadership, training methods and logistics before considering the reactions of the troops and tracing the interactions between institutions and individuals. Restoring historical agency to soldiers often considered passive and indifferent, Wilcox illustrates how and why Italians complied, endured or resisted the army's demands through balancing their civilian and military identities.

During the First World War, Italian soldiers’ attitudes varied widely, from enthusiasm to outright rejection of military service thanks to diverse political opinions, socioeconomic backgrounds and conceptions of national identity. The majority were relatively unenthusiastic but obedient, owing not only to the army’s use of harsh coercive techniques but also to soldiers’ own sense of duty to family, nation and comrades. Despite many episodes of indiscipline, most Italians faced their military service with determination, making endurance the most common response to the war.

La Repubblica di Weimar fu un periodo ricco di contraddizioni tra la Grande Guerra e l’avvento del Terzo Reich. Il sistema di democrazia parlamentare che riuscì a realizzare fu altresì sorprendente, non solo perché nacque pochi mesi dopo la fine di un conflitto mondiale da cui la Germania era uscita sconfitta ma, in particolar modo, per la portata di trasformazioni politiche e sociali che la caratterizzarono. La ricca storiografia sull’argomento testimonia l’importanza degli eventi che caratterizzarono il 1933, anno spartiacque della storia d’Europa e del mondo. Ciò a cui mira questo saggio è “ricostruire” l’idea che lo Stato Maggiore italiano aveva sulla Germania, alla vigilia dell’ascesa di Adolf Hitler. Attraverso le carte del SIM è possibile cogliere gli aspetti positivi della Repubblica di Weimar, ma anche quegli elementi di forte criticità derivanti dalle clausole penalizzanti del Trattato di pace che costituiranno la base ideologica e sociale della successiva ascesa del nazionalsocialismo. Lo studio si avvale dei cospicui documenti del “Servizio Informazioni Militare” del Regio Esercito che in data 2 gennaio 1933 vengono integrati in una relazione sullo stato complessivo delle forze armate tedesche. I sette fascicoli analizzati nel volume ci aiutano a comprendere l’ordinamento della Reichwehr, le forme di reclutamento e le scuole militari, la dottrina tattica e l’addestramento, le forze di polizia e le associazioni varie esistenti nel 1933, una fonte del tutto nuova nell’interpretazione di una Repubblica di Weimar ormai al tramonto.

This is the first part of the article that covers the history of Dalmatian island of Hvar during the World War II, in the period between the proclamation of Independent State of Croatia in April 1941 and capitulation of Kingdom of Italy in September 1943. The article presents the situation at the island during that period and activities of all political-military subjects that were present at the island – the authorities of the Independent State of Croatia, as well as the Communist led People's Liberation Movement and the Italian army.

Le alleanze militari e le trame diplomatiche costituirono lo sfondo entro il quale s’inserirono le riforme che lo Stato Maggiore italiano produsse dal 1871 al 1914. Queste, mutarono il volto dell’esercito italiano che da anello debole dell’alleanza con gli Imperi centrali (Triplice Alleanza) divenne l’ago della bilancia nello scontro che si andava a profilare tra i due blocchi di potenze contrapposti. Alla vigilia dello scoppio della Grande Guerra l’Italia aveva migliorato il proprio apparato militare e dato una fisionomia più dinamica e “vicina” agli eserciti delle maggiori potenze continentali dell’epoca. Il 23 maggio 1915 il Regno d’Italia avrebbe dichiarato guerra all’Impero austro-ungarico, aprendo il fronte italo-austriaco: seicento chilometri di trincee che andavano dai 3mila metri dell’Ortles al mare Adriatico, partecipando alla più grande guerra di posizione di ogni epoca.

Although Italy was one of the victorious allies in 1918, cultural and social memory of the First World War often focused on a sense of bitterness or perceived victimhood. Prioritising the humiliating defeat at the battle of Caporetto in 1917 within the national narrative of the war helped to underline the sense of the "mutilated victory" after the disappointments of the Paris Peace Conference. This article analyses the ways in which Caporetto was perceived and commemorated in Italy in the 1920s and 1930s. A model of redemptive sacrifice allowed a triumphal reworking of this most traumatic of defeats.

Erwin Rommel is by any standard a mythical figure. He has been the subject of countless studies in English and German. However, the “Ital- ian side of the hill” has been largely neglected, despite the fact that the foundation of the myth around him lies in the North African campaign, where, after all, thousands of soldiers of the Italian army fought along- side the Afrika Korps. This article will provide an Italian view of the “Des- ert Fox,” using new primary material that provides insights into Italian assessments during the war. A major source is material gathered by way of eavesdropping by British intelligence on Italian officers held as POWs in Cairo and in England.

La dimensione di massa che assunse la Prima guerra impose a tutti gli stati la messa in campo di strategie, strumenti, metodologie di azione inediti.
La guerra non fu combattuta solo nelle trincee, sopra e sotto i mari, con il blocco commerciale, con la mobilitazione industriale, ma fu portata fino dove non era mai giunta: dietro il fronte nemico, con l’obiettivo di penetrare nella sfera dei sentimenti delle persone, dentro il discorso pubblico e nella comunicazione privata delle società seminando dubbi, diffondendo punti di vista eversivi, alimentando la sfiducia nella prospettiva della vittoria, facendola apparire sempre più difficile, sempre più lontana, perfino meno desiderabile di una pace qualsiasi, rovesciando l’immagine del nemico.

Il volume “Parole come armi”, catalogo della mostra “La propaganda italiana nella Prima guerra mondiale e la disgregazione dell’Austria-Ungheria” allestita al Museo della Guerra di Rovereto tra il 2009 e il 2010 racconta proprio di questa “guerra di parole” scatenata anche sul fronte italo-austriaco, ne illustra la pianificazione, gli sviluppi e gli esiti, mostra i comandanti e le “armi” impiegate – volantini, giornali, manifesti – in quella che fu la più estesa battaglia della propaganda fino ad allora scatenata.

Il catalogo presenta un saggio di Marco Mondini dedicato alla nascita e all’organizzazione delle attività di propaganda nell’Esercito italiano ed una selezione di volantini italiani rivolti ai soldati delle diverse nazionalità austro-ungariche (Cecoslovacchi, Polacchi, Ungheresi, Serbi Croati e Sloveni, Romeni, Austriaci). I materiali provengono dal “Fondo Propaganda” conservato nell’Archivio del Museo della Guerra di Rovereto, costruito a partire dal materiale donato nel 1922 da Tullio Marchetti del Servizio Informazioni della 1a Armata. I documenti sono accompagnati da schede informative.

Il seguente testo studia le cause, i problemi e le incomprensioni che portarono al fallimento delle prime offensive italiane i primi mesi di combattimenti nel 1915. Gli obiettivi generali del piano dell'Alto comando non vennero raggiunti, portando al sacrificio di migliaia di soldati nel corso delle "spallate" con cui il Gen. Cadorna pensava di poter sbloccare il fronte.
