Live Electronics

This Bachelor Thesis in composition explores an alternative compositional process for creating
improvised music through the approach of sound design.

The questions addressed in the thesis are
concerned with how the soundscape can be controlled by the composer while still maintaining the
expressivity of an improvised performance. Thus, the composer’s role as both sound designer,
producer and performer is investigated using live electronics and score design.

The theoretical framework for the thesis is to be found in the intersection between Anglo-American
experimental music, electronic music, sound design and electroacoustic improvisation. Key influences
include indeterminacy as expressed in the music of John Cage, Deep Listening practices pioneered by
Pauline Oliveros as well as the aesthetical paradigms of electronic and electroacoustic music.

The artistic methods revolved around the following steps: studio workshops with musicians (Fredrik
Ekenvi and José Louis Relova Gallego) exploring timbres, playing techniques and music technology in
real-time followed by associative discussions about the soundscapes created; composing audio and
graphical drafts influenced by the workshops; designing diagrams for the electronics and compiling
these to a design document; workshopping and performing the final piece (Towards the Event
Horizon).
Towards the Event Horizon (for bass clarinet, electric guitar and live electronics) is the final result of
the work, comprising a score with accompanying design document as well as a recording of the original
performance at Studio Acusticum in Piteå 20th of March 2021. The artefacts and associated
documentation are presented in their entirety on the dedicated Research Catalogue exposition.

Conclusions include how composition and sound design are tied together and cannot be considered as
isolated processes, especially in the context of live electronics; the interrelationship between the
improviser, the acoustic soundscape and the artistic associations that inform the improvisation; the
importance of form as the defining element of a composition and lastly; how a score for improvised
music can be devised in the shape of a blueprint of form and texture, setting certain technical, sonic
and gestural conditions while leaving the performer to play freely within this frame.

Questa tesi indaga attraverso la formula del Live Electronics il rapporto tra umano e non umano mettendo in relazione l’estemporaneità del performer strumentista con due mondi molto diversi: le macchine, che elaborano una serie di algoritmi all’interno di un computer, e il mondo organico delle piante. E’ possibile entrare in relazione sonora con il mondo vegetale? In che modo questa relazione viene filtrata attraverso l’uso delle macchine? Per quanto la natura biologica delle piante non segua dei parametri comprensibili per la natura umana, è possibile entrare in empatia con loro attraverso i mezzi tecnologici?

Questa analisi, iniziata durante i corsi di Analisi della musica elettroacustica ed Esecuzione ed interpretazione della musica elettroacustica, è stata sviluppata a Kürten, durante i Kürten Kurse ad agosto del 2017: un'esperienza che permettono di avvicinarsi a Karlheinz Stockhausen in un modo quasi tangibile. Passeggiare tra "i suoi" alberi, parlare con chi viveva e lavorava con lui, ascoltare la sua musica per dieci giorni, permette di immergersi in un altro mondo, nel suo mondo, e capirlo ancora meglio di come lui ha dettagliatamente descritto in ogni conferenza, libro, intervista, partitura o conversazione.

Diverse motivazioni portano alla scelta di analizzare Mantra, in una prospettiva generale con approfondimento dell'elettronica: la prima su tutte è la suggestione del suo ascolto dal vivo. Mantra è un'opera che attrae per i suoi suoni e la sua struttura; è un'opera che affascina e incuriosisce ininterrottamente; è un'opera che anche dopo 47 anni continua a essere unica.

Il live coding è una forma di improvvisazione che consiste nella scrittura di algoritmi in tempo reale.
In sostanziale continuità con la tradizione della ricerca nel campo della musica algoritmica, la pratica del live coding è emersa negli ultimi venti anni grazie al lavoro di programmatori informatici, compositori e performer. La disponibilità in forma gratuita e libera degli strumenti di programmazione per il live coding ha permesso lo sviluppo di una sottocultura in grado di generare un contesto socio-culturale specifico.
Benché il live coding sia da qualche anno oggetto di studi accademici, le ricerche sugli aspetti musicologici e tecnologici sono ancora all’inizio. A partire da quanto sinora esplorato dalla letteratura, questi tesi ha lo scopo di indagare le implicazioni compositive e performative proprie del live coding, tentando di tracciare un possibile percorso di sviluppo di un ambiente per l’improvvisazione algoritmica. All’analisi storica e musicologica è affiancato dunque uno studio delle attuali architetture informatiche, al quale segue la costruzione di un sistema specifico in grado di applicare tecniche compositive tradizionali e processamenti elettroacustici in tempo reale.
Il primo capitolo si occupa di inquadrare il contesto storico-sociologico che ha portato allo sviluppo delle attuali forme di improvvisazione algoritmica, dapprima descrivendo la nascita della cultura degli Algorave (sez. 1.1), dunque ricostruendo le influenze ideative provenienti dai precursori della computer music (sez. 1.2); a partire da tali prospettive si è delineata una breve storia del live coding (sez. 1.3), sia sul piano tecnologico, sia su quello sociologico, sino a giungere all’attuale conformazione associazionistica e non-centralizzata, i cui aspetti etnografici e discografici sono discussi nella sez. 1.4. È stato proficuo indagare quali fossero i principi politici e ideologici propri della comunità dei live coders (sez. 1.5), con particolare enfasi sulle modalità di divulgazione e condivisione della conoscenza proprie dell’Open Source. L’indagine sulle proprietà musicologiche intrinseche dell’improvvisazione algoritmica è oggetto di studio nel secondo capitolo. In particolare sono state prese in esame le implicazioni derivanti dalle specificità tecniche di questa

pratica sul piano temporale di una performance (sez. 2.1) e le relazioni tra scrittura musicale e scrittura algoritmica (sez. 2.2); conseguentemente sono state analizzate le potenzialità inscritte nella codifica del linguaggio musicale mediante i linguaggi di programmazione (sez. 2.3). Una riflessione sulla multimedialità del live coding e i suoi effetti percettivi sul pubblico è presente nella sez. 2.4.
Il terzo capitolo ha lo scopo di comparare gli attuali linguaggi di programmazione musicale in tempo reale (sez. 3.1) e riflettere sui parametri determinanti nella scelta di un design specifico (sez. 3.2). In luce di quanto rilevato, si è proposta una possibile architettura composta da molteplici linguaggi utilizzati in sinergia (TidalCycles, Haskell, SuperCollider, Max/ MSP), il cui funzionamento è descritto dalla sez. 3.3 alla 3.6. A una spiegazione teoretica sono affiancati esempi scritti in tali linguaggi.
Una dimostrazione delle possibilità inscritte nel sistema così definito costituisce il quarto e ultimo capitolo. La sez. 4.1 raccoglie una serie di algoritmi di sintesi e processamento scritti in linguaggio SuperCollider negli ultimi tre anni, mentre una messa in pratica delle tecniche stocastiche è illustrata nella sez. 4.2. La tesi si conclude con l’implementazione di alcune tecniche ritmico-contrappuntistiche in linguaggio Haskell (sez. 4.3). Quanto mostrato nell’ultimo capitolo rappresenta un esempio di personalizzazione di un ambiente di live coding, le cui funzionalità possono essere definite dal compositore elettroacustico. Piuttosto che una trattazione esaustiva del campo di possibilità del live coding, si tratta dunque di fornire degli strumenti, affinché ciascun compositore possa intraprendere il live coding con la prospettiva di poter costruire un ambiente specifico e direzionato verso le proprie esigenze espressive.
Tutti gli algoritmi mostrati nell’ultimo capitolo sono presenti sul mio profilo GitHub (Olbos, 2020) e possono essere utilizzati e modificati liberamente.

Questo articolo è focalizzato su Atomi distratti, un lavoro per ensemble e live electronics del compositore italiano Mario Garuti, ed è organizzato su tre differenti livelli:
1. analisi poietico-estesica del brano;
2. presentazione dell’ambiente esecutivo del live electronics approntato per la prima esecuzione;
3. elaborazione di un algoritmo di sintesi in ambiente Max/MSP per l’esecuzione della parte di tastiera elettronica.
Dopo una breve introduzione in cui si chiarisce l’idea all’origine delle scelte musicali operate nel brano, viene precisata la metodologia di approccio all’analisi.
Il primo livello include un’analisi dei cambiamenti contrastivi in cui viene mostrato come, in Atomi distratti, a un’organizzazione gerarchica debole (Imberty) corrisponda un’esperienza del tempo musicale coesa e unitaria, attraverso cui la rappresentazione simbolica e fantasmatica sottesa al
brano (proprio la frammentazione del tempo interno, mise en abyme dell’ipotesi stessa) viene trasmessa integra ed intelligibile. Al fine di ottenere un tracciato delle immagini linguistiche, poetiche, musicali ed extra-musicali all’origine
del brano viene utilizzato il mezzo dell’intervista, in cui il compositore è chiamato in prima persona a indagare il proprio lavoro.
Il secondo livello include due sotto-livelli: in primo luogo viene data descrizione del materiale pre-registrato e del suo ruolo nell’economia del brano, quindi una descrizione tecnologica dell’ambiente esecutivo del live electronics di Atomi distratti si accompagna a un’osservazione comparata longitudinale delle opere di Mario Garuti che includono in organico il mezzo elettronico, al fine di chiarire il ruolo del live electronics all’interno del brano e l’evolversi del rapporto che il compositore modenese intrattiene con l’elettronica nei suoi lavori. Anche in questo caso l’intervista è lo strumento privilegiato per accedere al mondo interno del compositore.
Il terzo livello è strutturato a partire da una traduzioneinterpretazione in termini tecnologici delle descrizioni, registrate utilizzando il mezzo dell’intervista, che il compositore fornisce dei due preset di tastiera elettronica presenti in partitura. Di seguito viene descritto il progetto per lo strumento di sintesi, della cui realizzazione in ambiente Max/MSP si dà descrizione nel paragrafo conclusivo

The nature of the recording artist and how they engage within the recording studio as a technological space is changing. The recording studio is an instrument and an artistic process, and so too, technology has enabled the musician to learn the craft of recording, embellishing their instrumental skills. With real-time audio manipulation becoming highly implementable on the live stage for a variety of instrumental situations, what creative agency is lost for the music producer when this technology enters the recording studio? This paper presents multiple perspectives on how modern musicians in jazz-based performance styles are using technology to shift the nature of audio manipulation within the recording studio, with the analysis of a recording by both the artists and the producer

Since Barry Truax’s early pioneering work, the increasing availability of powerful and inexpensive desktop computers has led many composers, researchers and artists to experiment and work with granular synthesis and/or granulation processes. During the last two decades a stream of granulation software has appeared, but despite this spread, all these applications have important limitations in terms of efficiency, usability, flexibility and control. This paper describes an abstraction of an efficient and flexible granular processing system built into the Max/MSP environment.

In questo articolo si opera un’analisi di Anthèmes 2, un
lavoro di Pierre Boulez datato 1997 per violino e dispositivo
elettronico della durata approssimativa di 20
minuti. Il brano del compositore francese, di estrema rilevanza
per ciò che concerne la storia della composizione legata
all'uso delle nuove tecnologie, è stato fatto oggetto di
analisi musicale e tecnologica condotte sulla partitura al
fine di individuare le strategie e i processi compositivi
messi in atto. I dati emersi sono stati in seguito posti a
confronto con le dichiarazioni del compositore: la sostanziale
concordanza tra queste ultime e le evidenze analitiche
ha permesso di costruire un quadro integrato di inferenze
circa l’approccio bouleziano al live electronics,
evidenziandone linee guida (asimmetria nel rapporto tra
strumento ed elettronica; monodirezionalità
dell’interazione; funzione demiurgica del compositore;
utilizzo della ridondanza all’interno di una drammaturgia;
finalità costruttiva del dialogo tra funzione mimetica/
elettronica e funzione diegetica/materiali strumentali) e
finalità (manipolazione mirata dei meccanismi psicologici
della fruizione). Ampia parte delle dichiarazioni rilasciate da Boulez in
occasione della prima esecuzione del brano (21 Ottobre
1997, IRCAM, Parigi) al filosofo e musicologo francese
Peter Szendy è stata appositamente tradotta in italiano e
inclusa in appendice.

This article describes an instrument developed by the author for improvised electroacoustic performances: fXfD. It first describes the conditions that led to the design of this instrument , contextualizing it with the no-input practice. A survey on the use of feedback in a musical context is then presented with examples of musical production of the author. The development of the instrument out of the Ableton Live software is also explained. The author then describe the choices of design and programming in respect to the the digital instrument paradigm: interface, sound source and mapping strategies. The article concludes with observations made in the context of an improvised musical practice of noise and provides an opening on the composition and performance possibilities offered by fXfD.

When performing digital music it is important to be able to
acquire a comparable level of sensitivity and control to what
can be achieved with acoustic instruments. By examining
the links between sound and touch, new compositional and
performance strategies start to emerge for performers using
digital instruments. These involve technological implementations
utilizing the haptic information channels, offering insight into how our tacit knowledge of the physical world can be introduced to the digital domain, enforcing the view that sound is a `species of touch'.

This document illustrates reasons why vibrotactile interfaces,
which offer physical feedback to the performer, may
be viewed as an important approach in addressing the limitations of current physical dynamic systems used to mediate
the digital performer's control of various sorts of musical
information. It will examine one such method used for performing
in two different settings: with piano and live electronics,
and laptop alone, where in both cases, feedback is
artificially introduced to the performer's hands offering different
information about what is occurring musically. The
successes of this heuristic research will be assessed, along
with a discussion of future directions of experimentation.

O presente trabalho propõe uma análise e discussão a respeito do papel desempenhado pelas ferramentas digitais de produção, recepção e mediação sonora na produção musical contemporânea a partir de observações e análise de um repertório produzido no período entre 2010 e 2013 como parte da produção artística do grupo de pesquisas MOBILE: Processos Musicais Interativos, sediado na Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Esse repertório se insere na produção experimental contemporânea e se relaciona com a produção experimental não institucionalizada dentro do cenário de música experimental brasileira, por meio das relações de seus participantes com outros contextos produtivos, como festivais, núcleos e espaços dedicados ao fomento e à difusão dessa produção. Para fins de embasamento, é proposta uma discussão acerca da definição de música experimental, o esboço de uma perspectiva histórica das principais tendências que articulam a produção experimental contemporânea, assim como um levantamento sobre as principais questões que pautam a discussão atual a respeito do uso de ferramentas digitais na produção musical.

Martin Parker’s gruntCount is a multi-version, configurable composition for improvising musician (or musicians) and computer. Performers embark on a journey through sound processing modules that are specifically customised to individual playing styles. It exists in no fixed state, yet allows for a growing set of rehearsable, replicable and configurable pieces, in which all musical material, timing, overall duration and levels of effort are managed by the live musician. In order to optimise elements of flow and of liveness in each performance, gruntCount challenges traditional definitions of 'piece', ‘system’ and ‘instrument’, instead establishing an environment for human-machine improvisation that serves the musical result and not the system itself. This paper refers to a selection of sound examples from the bass clarinet version (2012-14) and examines formal time-shaping possibilities within a structured performance, while exploring the environment’s qualities of coaction and configurability in an era of new score types.

The Hyper-Flute is a standard Boehm flute (the model used is a Powell 2100, made in Boston) extended via electronic sensors that link it to a computer, enabling control of digital sound processing parameters while performing. The instrument's electronic extensions are described in some detail, and performance applications are briefly discussed.

A partir de 1982 a música eletroacústica e todos os tipos de música sobre suporte tecnológico - se alguns preferirem classificar de forma mais detalhada - tomaram novos rumos e ampliaram-se devido a fatores econômicos, tecnológicos e a chegada de uma nova geração de compositores. O texto faz um panorama sobre a renovação de compositores, aspectos econômicos e tecnológicos influenciando a origem dos home studios,  a execução do repertório nesse período no Brasil, os estúdios existentes e em desenvolvimento, eventos musicais com obras eletroacústicas em sua programação, organizadores de eventos, veículos de divulgação e informação, mais particularmente emissoras de rádio, compositores brasileiros atuantes, obras premiadas no exterior e os lançamentos fonográficos com obras desse repertório.

Esta tese discute a utilização de metapadrões como ferramenta para a composição musical com formas abertas, partituras gráficas, improvisação, interação entre linguagens artísticas e eletrônica ao vivo, a partir do pensamento sistêmico e dos estudos da complexidade. Foca no papel da partitura em uma situação, em que um grupo de musicistas improvisa a partir de uma partitura com notação não-tradicional, procurando entendê-la como um processo complexo. Parte, assim, para o estudo de um caso específico na diversidade de práticas musicais, onde uma partitura é aceita por intérpretes como ponto de partida para uma performance musical. No Capítulo 2, procura entender a situação pela metáfora de um atrator estranho, a partir da Teoria do Caos, com dimensão fractal e dependência hipersensível das condições iniciais: não-linear, dinâmica, imprevisível, auto-semelhante, complexa — sendo estas, características de sua forma. Discute, nesse contexto, o papel de modelos. Fazendo um ziguezague entre forma e processo, observa a partitura através de três olhares, nos três próximos capítulos. No Capítulo 3, traz um primeiro olhar, que procura ampliar o entendimento da forma do processo para um entendimento de sistemas, feitos de partes em interação. A partir do pensamento sistêmico em Gregory Bateson, discute a abdução como ferramenta do pensamento (o papel de modelos, também como estórias e metáforas) e sua compreensão de padrões (patterns). Em seguida, analisa sua lista de seis critérios do processo mental, entendendo o sistema, suas partes em interação, como formado pelas musicistas e a partitura, na situação enfocada. Conclui que, nessa perspectiva, a partitura pode ser vista como um ponto por onde flui energia colateral para o sistema e veículo de metamensagens no processo. Faz uma crítica ao pensamento em hierarquias, em Bateson. No segundo olhar (Capítulo 4) procura voltar ao processo, analisando uma partitura que pressupõe a situação enfocada: Wu-Li, de Hans-Joachim Koellreutter. A análise aponta para um pensamento composicional interessado nas inter-relações dos gestos musicais no tempo, do qual apreende a possibilidade de se pensar em um padrão de inter- relações entre padrões de inter-relações, um metapadrão. No terceiro olhar (Capítulo 5), procura entender mais da forma do processo, a partir dos estudos da complexidade: cadeias de retroalimentação, autorganização e o emergir, em sistemas da natureza daqueles discutidos no primeiro olhar. Faz uma crítica ao pensamento sistêmico. Tenta ultrapassar a formulação em hierarquias: propõe uma substituição do esquemático no pensamento sistêmico, por um pensamento diagramático, próximo ao entendimento do processo em Félix Guattari. Entende um metapadrão como ferramenta, e não-fórmula, de um pensamento composicional. O autor passa a analisar a utilização desse pensamento em suas próprias composições, com relação: ao uso da segunda pessoa do singular, às inter-relações entre tempo e notação, aos objetos e à inter-relação corporal. Compara o metapadrão a uma metáfora e a um diagrama, ao mesmo tempo retrospectivo e projetivo, e ressalta sua utilização no atravessar a membrana entre linguagens artísticas. Por fim, exemplifica o pensamento exposto na tese, descrevendo a elaboração: do algoritmo para a eletrônica ao vivo e da partitura de gosto de terra.

The relationship of interaction and usability between musician – instrument expands greatly from the appropriation of new digital technologies in artistic practices, in order to promote the sound creation and its subsequent flow in the human-computer interface, by preparing a kind of hybrid machine. This machine includes the idea of an instrument that preserves its original features of lutherie, physicality, corporeality, etc. and incorporates the capabilities of a digital instrument. The musician will have access to new ways to explore, interpret and create the sound from an attentive and deep listening, manipulating its most intrinsic potential, which brings the possibility of the performer becoming part of this hybrid machine, becoming machinic. This article aims to analyze the interaction " man-tool-machine " and its new forms of instrumentness, listing some of the intrinsic problems of this expansion process with regard to the use, creation, research and musical performance with the new digital technologies available on current mobile computing, when associated with the free improvisation practices.

At the premiere of Point Ones for small ensemble and augmented conductor (2012) by Alexander Schubert (1979-), I had a front row seat to Daan Janssens’ impressive performance as the augmented solo-conductor. There was an observable and palpable tension between the live electronics and live musicians, created both by Janssens’ performance and Schubert’s programming and composition. During the compelling solo-conductor’s cadenza, Janssens completely released control of the live musicians and freely explored the virtual realm afforded the conductor by the electronics.
In this paper, I will briefly explain Schubert’s score and my analysis thereof. The usage of the live electronics is considered as well as the balance that the conductor must maintain between the electronics and the live musicians. Comparable pieces are then reviewed. I will conclude this paper by determining that there are five detectable artistic and socio-economic criteria for utilizing a conductor in Point Ones.

A major problem of the composition process involving music technology is the selection of the tools within the broader context of the ever- changing language of multimedia production.
The focus of this contribution will be on creative applications of the Spectral Modeling Synthesis (SMS) and Pure Data (PD) in two specific works: Searching your Synesthesia (2005) for flute, clarinet, cello, piano and live electronics and ODD (2006) an electro-acoustic multi channel 5.1 Surround piece.
This paper will provide a brief view on how this open source software offers the user the possibility to experiment with a vast number of compositional techniques in very flexible programming environments.
This view is based on the analysis of the research that has been carried out within the compositional course of action concerning several pieces using these systems. It is intended to share a particular framework for enabling interactions between specific tools for the creative compositional process.

This work looks at improvisations produced by the OMax, ImproteK, and Djazz ML generators, through the lens of the elements of music and suggests a musically-oriented evaluation methodology. This idiomatic music analysis is presented from a jazz performer's point of view, reflecting upon cognitive foundations of emotion and meaning. The analysis, based mainly on the evaluation of already published material and on the authors' own experiments, shows musical drawbacks in terms of tension and release of the resulting melodic lines, voice leading of chords, rhythm, groove, dynamic control, and structure.

Mixed pieces combining instruments and electronics call for extending the conventional concepts of pitch, duration, dynamics and timbre. A preoccupation with pitch in the instrumental domain is opposed to a predominance of timbral thinking in the acousmatic domain. Composers need to find links between these prevailing notions. Smalley's continua between note and noise/gesture and texture embrace a wide range of possible transformations. Applying these continua to the instrumental and the electronic domain dissolves the fixation of lattice-based with instrumental, and sound-object with electronic music. In mixed pieces, the play with expectations of what each medium should be doing leads to intricate relationships. This paper will explain aesthetic ideas and compositional techniques evolving from pieces that equally draw on acousmatic and instrumental idioms. For my piece Atmungsaktiv I developed a set of generative tools on the basis of spectral transformations. The paper will describe their technical implications and the way they enable a structurally cohesive approach – which is equally applicable to electronic and instrumental writing. A less stringent separation of instrumental and electronic music combines a variety of characteristics; it also demands compositional solutions which penetrate both domains. Introduction From the perspective of the composer, acousmatic art and instrumental music can seem like two entirely different media. In the acousmatic domain the composer directly crafts sound as it will be performed in the concert hall. In instrumental music the composer relies on performers to interpret the written score. While in acousmatic art recordings taken from the environment may be employed to evoke associations with real situations, the sounds produced by musical instruments are rendered solely for the purpose of music making. The physical foundations of the two media exhibit distinct features. Sound projected over loudspeakers is marked by directionality and clear definition – both in terms of its spatial field and its covered frequency range. Instrumental sound features a spatial and timbral complexity which can vary dramatically between individual instruments and players. Acousmatic art is advantaged by the fact that sound events can be fixed at any point on a continuous time-line. Rhythmic complexity is achieved by exploiting complex inner rhythm structures of sounds. In instrumental music the tempo differs from one performance to the next. Written tempo markings result in sometimes drastically different interpretations. In acousmatic art, the continuum of the frequency spectrum, with upper and lower bounds determined only by the human hearing, serves as starting point for pitch organisation – but pitch is only one parameter, without priority, sometimes even absent, within organisational strategies. Instrumental music deals with tuning systems, and composers are given the choice to accept, avoid or modify the existing possibilities. A more in depth consideration of the tools used for realising instrumental music and acousmatic art will illuminate further differences. However, the comparison also reveals contact points between the two domains.

Diese Arbeit versucht einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der Elektronischen Musik zu geben, die in Verbindung mit Instrumenten und Interpreten in kammermusikalischen Konfigurationen wie Solo- und Ensemble-Kompositionen steht, und als Live-Elektronik bekannt ist.
Das vorliegende Werk soll dazu beitragen, ein besseres Verständnis über die Elektroakustische Musik in der Realzeit zu vermitteln. Sie entsteht mit Hilfe von Interpreten auf der Bühne, wobei das klangliche „Basismaterial“ während einer Aufführung umgewandelt wird.
Anhand der unterschiedlichen Definitionen wird im Kapitel 1 der Begriff Live-Elektronik näher beleuchtet.
Hilfreich ist dabei die Darstellung des geschichtlichen Abrisses der Entwicklung der Elektronischen Musik im 20. Jahrhundert, die zur Entstehung der L.-E. führte. Mit Hilfe des historischen Überblicks ist auch eine Einteilung in einzelne Stadien möglich. Als Vorschritte zählen die Versuche des Komponisten John Cage, die er schon seit Ende der 1930er Jahre unternahm, setzte sich fort mit dem Komponisten Karlheinz Stockhausen, der seit den späten 1950er Jahren sich immer mehr der L.-E. annäherte, bis hin zu den Werken der 1980er und 1990er Jahren, die zum Teil im Studio der Heinrich-Strobel-Stiftung des Südwestfunks (heute SWR) und des IRCAMs (Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique/Musique) entstanden sind.

Mocap (motion capture) techniques applied to music are now very widespread. More than two decades after the earliest experiments (1), there are many scientists and musicians working in this field, as shown by the large number of papers and the technological equipment used in many research centres around the world. Despite this popularity, however, there is little evidence of musical productions using the mocap technique, with the excep- tion of a few that have been able to rely upon very high budgets and very complex equipment. The following arti- cle aims to describe the implementation of "Neyma, for 2 performers, motion capture and live electronics (2012)," (2) an interactive multimedia performance that used a low budget mocap system, performed as part of the 56 th Biennale Musica di Venezia.

Discussions of pedagogical approaches to computer music are often rooted within the realm of higher education alone. This paper describes Sound, Electronics and Music, a large-scale project in which tutelage was provided on various topics related to sound and music technology to around nine hundred school children in Scotland in 2014 and 2015. Sixteen schools were involved, including two additional support needs schools. The project engaged several expert musicians and researchers to deliver the different areas of the course. A particular emphasis was placed on providing a form of music education that would engender creative practice that was available to all, regardless of both musical ability and background. The findings and outcomes of the project suggest that we should not be restricting the discussion of how to continue to educate future generations in the practices surrounding computer music to the university level. This article examines the adaptation of site and time specific processes in the performance of live electronics. A worked example of a site and time specific concert in a public bus is provided allowing for evaluation of performative methods and techniques.

Electric Cowboy Cacophony is a quartet of musicians from
different countries and with distinct musical backgrounds, ranging from rock
to avant-garde classical, from bluegrass to computer music. In the second
half of 2008 they met to record and publicly perform free improvisations that
exploited both their common and diverse musical histories, re-injecting some
of the roots elements that many Free Improvisation practitioners consciously
avoid.
Above all the group’s trans-national/trans-cultural/trans-aesthetic character
defines their sound world. The result could be interpreted as either a
cohesive and convincing eclecticism, or a jarring mish-mash of unconnected
stylistic oddities. Together with a general discussion of the role of
improvisation in Western music, Electric Cowboy Cacophony’s working
methods and musical results are presented: from the point of view of their
techniques, technological innovation and interaction, and aesthetic/stylistic
coherence.

Considering the recent discussion involving the improvisational techniques and the more speculative structural process in the creation of live electronic music, we present, in this paper, the computational implementation of Pousseur's Harmonic Network in SuperCollider computer language in order to contribute to the development of real-time music. Initially, we present a brief review of the Pousseurian Harmonic thinking and how the Belgian composer created Harmonic Networks, discussing their uses for music making. Then, we present how Pousseur's Harmonic Network was implemented in SuperCollider computer language considering the algorithmic solutions to this task. Finally, we demonstrate how Harmonic Networks can be used in live electronics compositions.
