Migrations as Human Mobilities

This paper aims to answer the question presented in its title by investigating whether and how a peaceful resolution to the Rohingya crisis can be imagined anytime soon, considering the deep-rooted nature of the conflict between nationalist Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine State. If there is to be a resolution, I put forth the idea that ASEAN may be the most well-suited institutional actor to promote such a resolution because of its past successes in dealing with the Myanmar government and because it is in its best interest as well as in the interest of Myanmar, its fellow member. I will explain the root and direct causes of the Rohingya problem, a local problem that has deteriorated to become a humanitarian disaster. I will also show how this national problem is leading to a regional security crisis. Finally, I aim to demonstrate that the Rohingya crisis is challenging the international community since neither the national polity, nor the regional association have so far been willing or able to protect the Rohingya community from crimes against humanity. My paper will consist of two distinct parts, each aiming to tackle the above issues and to answer a main question: 1) How is the Rohingya crisis to be explained or understood? 2) Who or what can bring a peaceful resolution to a national conflict which has regional and international implications?

Mobility studies emerged from a postmodern moment in which global ‘flows’ of capital, people and objects were increasingly noted and celebrated. Within this new scholarship, categories of migrancy are all seen through the same analytical lens. This book builds on, as well as critiques, past and present studies of mobility. In so doing, it challenges conceptual orientations built on binaries of difference that have impeded analyses of the interrelationship between mobility and stasis. These include methodological nationalism, which counterpoises concepts of internal and international movement and native and foreigner, and consequently normalises stasis. Instead, the book proposes a ‘regimes of mobility’ framework that addresses the relationships between mobility and immobility, localisation and transnational connection, experiences and imaginaries of migration, and rootedness and cosmopolitan openness. Within this framework and its emphasis on social fields of differential power, the various contributors to this collection ethnographically explore the disparities, inequalities, racialised representations and national mythscapes that facilitate and legitimate differential mobility and fixity. Although they examine nation-state building processes, the anthropological analysis is not confined by national boundaries.

Starting from the diachronic impact of salt on humanity's numerous activities and spiritual reflexes, the author calls for establishing a new humanist discipline: the anthropology of salt. This first exertion lists the themes developed around salt and the sciences/disciplines involved primarily or sectorially in researching this mineral. The anthropology of salt is a discipline of the future, which will gradually become autonomous as the inter-and trans-disciplinary approaches to common salt will prevail over the mono-or multidisciplinary ones.

Sacrifice is a fraught concept that both describes and prescribes the fate-playing ventures of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Suffering on behalf of loved ones promises a better life in return; it is also used to serve very different discursive ends: as a state strategy to promote overseas work or as a rhetorical tactic to condemn the government's labor export policy. This paper tracks the trope of sacrifice in the state's and migrant activists' rhetoric and looks at how OFWs receive these meanings and respond to these discourses. The paper then examines Migrante International's campaign, Zero Remittance Day, as a complex political act of withholding that defies the state's remittance-centred strategy of migration-for-development.

In the Swabian Jura (Southwest Germany) the Ach and Lone valleys host a number of cave sites, which have been repeatedly occupied by groups of hominins since at least the last interglacial. From the excavation of these Prehistoric cave deposits generations of archaeologists have discovered deep sequences and spectacular finds that help to illuminate the evolution of our species and the extinction of Neanderthals.
The current understanding of the relationship between caves, cave deposits, human occupation and landscape evolution in the Ach and Lone valleys relies on data coming almost exclusively from cave sites and rockshelters. Conversely, the few geological studies that focused on the geomorphological evolution of the Ach and Lone valleys were mostly designed to answer questions unrelated to the study of the human occupation of this region.
This dissertation intends to bridge the gap existing (not only in the Ach and Lone valleys) between the micromorphological analysis of cave deposits and the study of the paleolandscape. To this end, we investigated the deposits accumulated inside the cave site of Hohlenstein-Stadel (in the Lone Valley) with micromorphological analysis and FTIR methods. Additionally we studied the sediment archives preserved in the Ach and Lone valleys by means of auggering, deeper coring, geophysics, micromorphology, FTIR and 14C dating. By integrating our results with previous studies we have been able to evaluate the impact of landscape and environmental changes on the sedimentary and diagenetical processes that occurred inside the cave sites of this region. Our findings carry significant implications for models used to explain the arrival of early modern humans in the Swabian Jura and the human depopulation that this region seem to have experienced around the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).
Previous studies have argued that the early Aurignacian deposits at the sites of Hohle Fels and Geißenklösterle are characterized by deposition of fresh loess, less intensive phosphatization, and the formation of ice lenses. These data support the hypothesis that modern humans entered the Ach Valley in the course of a period characterized by cold climate. Our micromorphological analysis showed that inside Hohlenstein-Stadel (in the Lone Valley) the transition from the Middle Paleolithic to early Aurignacian deposits displays decreasing phosphatization. However, at Hohlenstein-Stadel we did not observe features diagnostic for ground freezing (such as ice lenses). Therefore inside this cave there is no direct evidence supporting the occurrence of a colder climatic period at the time of the arrival of modern humans.
The data we collected from Ach and Lone valleys suggest that this region has been variably shaped by phases of soil formation, soil denudation, loess accumulation and river valley incision. Our study revealed that these changes in the landscape might have shaped significantly the archaeological record originally accumulated inside the cave sites of this region. Accordingly to a widely accepted model, Southwest Germany was abandoned by Gravettian groups around 26.000 14C BP. After a major chronostratigraphic gap Magdalenians recolonized the region starting 13.500 14C BP. Such chronostratigraphic gap (12.500 14C years) have been regarded as indicative of the depopulation that the region experienced during the LGM. Our data, however, show that the beginning of this long-lasting phase of apparent depopulation coincides with the occurrence of erosional phases at some cave sites of Ach and Lone valleys. Although the relation between cave erosion and Gravettian emigration needs to be further verified, we hypothesize that humans might have been present in this region also during the period 26.000-13.500 14C BP and erosional processes might have cancelled the archaeological evidence for such occupations.

It is hard to talk about human mobilities without taking into consideration how mobility is being shaped by and shaping processes of imagination. The key concepts of imagination and mobility have rich and complex genealogies. The matter is even made more complex because there are many related concepts surrounding them. Imagination is
associated with images, imagery and imaginaries, whereas mobility is connected to movement, motion and migration (not to mention its imagined opposite, immobility). To be able to see the forest for the trees, I focus in this critical reflection on a discussion of the concepts themselves. One of the analytical advantages of mobility studies, a
relatively novel field of study, is that it shows us how imagination (a dynamic psychological process) and imaginaries (products of the imagination) are crucial for very different forms of human (im)mobility.

La présente étude, qui est à l’initiative du CCME, porte sur une analyse des mobilisations des compétences marocaines du monde, et particulièrement des initiatives de politiques publiques mises sur pied pour gérer cette réalité. Cette recherche, qui s’est déroulée au long de l’année 2011, vise à dresser substantiellement un bilan analytique de l’expérience institutionnelle, gouvernementale et associative de dé- marches de mobilisation des compétences marocaines du monde, en focalisant sur les divers secteurs d’activité, ainsi que sur les modalités de leur mise en œuvre. Un focus particulier a été porté sur les initiatives entreprises depuis les origines de ces démarches et les possibilités de convergences, entre, d’un côté, les mobilités des compétences et de l’autre les institutions publiques concernées par les priorités de développement multisectoriels sur le territoire marocain. Hormis cette analyse d’ensemble, de mise en perspective des politiques de mobilisation des compétences et des initiatives de la communauté (allant du TOKTEN au pro- gramme d’activités en cours du ministère de la Communauté Marocaine à l’Etranger), il a surtout été question de faire émerger les forces et les limites des démarches initiées, depuis le début des années 1990.

This book examines the antagonistic relationship between new European nationalisms as these often go hand-in-hand with populism, and the phenomenon of migration.
Migration has become a significant issue both in Europe and the whole world. Although it has always existed, much of public opinion sees it now as a problem. The latter has been exaggerated through a crisis in hospitality exacerbated by the relatively recently constructed and misplaced feeling of a civilisational threat from islam. Migration is then countered by the escalation of new nationalisms, at least some of which are supported by populism. This book offers an understanding of this conjunction of migration and nationalism in the post-cold war European and global context. More specifically, the book takes up how the end of the simplified cold war cognitive binary means an unprecedented epistemological confusion and depoliticisation which takes migration as its target, but could resort to other targets too. Discussing the postcolonial background to the new migrations, the book also considers womens' rights, postsocialism and the relevance of the current pandemic, as the issue of migration is addressed in the context of the European crisis-ridden present as well as the trans-European context.
This wide-ranging interrogation of how contemporary European immigration is conceived and understood may appeal to readers with interests in contemporary migration, new nationalisms, populism, feminism, colonial, postcolonial, and decolonial issues, as well as socialism and postsocialism.

Cet ouvrage examine les relations antagonistes entre les nouveaux nationalismes européens car ceux-ci vont souvent de pair avec le populisme, et le phénomène migratoire.  La migration est devenue un enjeu important tant en Europe que dans le monde entier. Bien qu'elle ait toujours existé, une grande partie de l'opinion publique y voit désormais un problème. Ce dernier a été exagéré par une crise de l'hospitalité exacerbée par le sentiment relativement récent et déplacé d'une menace civilisationnelle de l'islam. La migration est alors contrée par l'escalade de nouveaux nationalismes, dont certains au moins sont soutenus par le populisme. Ce livre propose une compréhension de cette conjonction de la migration et du nationalisme dans le contexte européen et global de l'après-guerre froide. Plus précisément, le livre étudie comment la fin du binaire cognitif simplifié de la guerre froide signifie une confusion épistémologique et une dépolitisation sans précédent qui prend la migration comme cible, mais pourrait également recourir à d'autres objectifs. Discutant du contexte postcolonial des nouvelles migrations, le livre considère également les droits des femmes, le postsocialisme et l’importance de la pandémie actuelle, alors que la question de la migration est abordée dans le contexte du présent européen en crise ainsi que du contexte transeuropéen.  Cette vaste interrogation sur la façon dont l’immigration européenne contemporaine est conçue et comprise pourrait  intéresser ceux  qui sont intéressés par la migration contemporaine, les nouveaux nationalismes, le populisme, le féminisme, les questions coloniales, postcoloniales et décoloniales, comme par le socialisme et le postsocialisme.

The concepts of migration and mobility clearly intersect, but they are not synonyms. While migration by definition entails mobility, migration studies has privileged studying other aspects of the migratory process. This article analyzes migratory (im)mobilities and methodologies to study them and it critically reflects on the usefulness of mobility studies as an analytical lens to study human migration. Lack of empirical data suggests that we need more systematic comparative studies of how migratory mobilities are generated in everyday life and facilitated as well as constrained by specific mobility circuits and institutions.

Este estudio de caso parte de la realización de un diagnóstico de identificación de necesidades de mujeres inmigrantes trabajadoras del hogar, encargado por el Ayuntamiento de Castelldefels (Provincia
de Barcelona, España). El objetivo general del proyecto de investigación es conocer la situación de las mujeres extranjeras trabajadoras del hogar que trabajan en Castelldefels, identificar sus necesidades y su interacción en el territorio, para realizar propuestas de intervención. El territorio de aplicación es el municipio de Castelldefels, una ciudad costera de 65.000 habitantes de la Comarca del Baix Llobregat,
en el área metropolitana de la ciudad de Barcelona. La metodología consistió en una investigación etnográfica llevada a cabo durante los meses de enero, febrero y marzo de 2018, que incluyó entrevistas
en profundidad a trabajadoras e informantes clave, y observación participante. Esta investigación permitió confirmar la hipótesis de partida sobre la alta demanda en el servicio doméstico y de cuidados en municipios de renta alta como Castelldefels y a su vez, la invisibilidad social de las situaciones que viven las trabajadoras migrantes a causa de la falta de derechos y de la infravaloración del sector. Esta paradójica realidad requiere de acciones concretas a nivel local para visibilizar,
sensibilizar y responder adecuadamente a las necesidades de las trabajadoras, como lo que son: mujeres trabajadoras, migrantes y ciudadanas a la vez. Por otro lado, el análisis de las trayectorias sociolaborales de las mujeres migrantes entrevistadas para este estudio permitió comprobar que aún existen grandes diferencias entre la legislación y la práctica en el servicio doméstico, y, lo que es más importante, permitió profundizar sobre aspectos como la explotación laboral, la informalidad y las consecuencias en la salud de las trabajadoras, aportando una visión longitudinal que va más allá de la denuncia y de la visibilización.

La Diputación de millones de Murcia fue una entidad fiscal que gestionó el servicio de millones con que sirvieron las Cortes de Castilla a los reyes en el siglo XVII. Esta gestión dio lugar a procesos confiscatorios o embargos a las poblaciones que no pagaron el servicio o se retrasaron en hacerlo: así sucedió, por ejemplo, en 1606-1614, por razón de impagos y retrasos debidos a la carestía de alimentos (malas cosechas, sequías, etc.), que pueden mostrar y en parte explicar el marco económico y social tan difícil que precedió y acompañó a las expulsiones de moriscos de los años 1609-1614. The Diputation of millions of Murcia was a fiscal entity that managed the service of millions with which they served the Cortes of Castile to the kings in century XVII. This management led to confiscatory processes or embargoes on people who did not pay for the service or delayed doing so: for example, in 1606-1614, due to defaults and delays due to food shortages (bad harvests, droughts, etc.) that can show and partly explain the difficult economic and social framework that preceded and accompanied the expulsions of moriscos from the years 1609-1614.

This article is dedicated to the problem of the origin and spread of the Yamna cultural-historical community (YCHC) in the context of the hypothesis recently expressed by geneticists about the massive migration of population groups genetically related to YCHC and carrying the genetic determinants of the Iranian Neolithic agrarians and hunters and fishers of the North Caucasus from the Ponto-Caspian steppe to central and northern Europe at the beginning of the Bronze Age. Based on an in-depth archeological and genetic analysis, we propose that the genetic «invasion» of the Iranian-Caucasian genetic element into Europe at the beginning of the Bronze Age, recently proposed by paleogeneticits on the basis of a large-scale study of ancient DNA, was not the result of a large-scale migration of representatives of YCHC from the Ponto-Caspian steppes to central and northern Europe, but the result of global population and cultural changes in Eurasia at the end of the Atlantic climatic optimum. We further suggest that before the steppe genetics appeared in Europe at the beginning of the Bronze Age, central European genetic determinants appeared in the steppe in the Eneolithic, and that the movement of the steppe genetic element to Europe was at least in part the second phase of the «pendular» migration of European expatriates, returning to the historical area of habitation. We also come to the conclusion that the very concept of distinguishing YCHC as a monolithic entity is inappropriate, and that the groups of nomadic tribes of the Ponto-Caspian steppe most likely existed as discrete communities, although united by a common ideology and a genetic relationship that included both the Iranian-Caucasian (throughout the entire range), and European / Anatolian agricultural (locally) genetic elements.

Human migration is the phenomenon when people migrate from one region to another. There are various sociological and economic factors such as civilian disturbance, economic imbalance, epidemic, natural calamity etc. which contributes as the reasons of human migration. It is important to understand and predict the pattern of human migration for governing authorities for better management of social and economic resources such as housing, healthcare, transportation, and a balanced distribution of skills and labour across different industries and geographical regions. To understand the use of artificial intelligence to predict the pattern of human migration, in this paper the research has been divided into two parts; first part is the study of the theories given by sociologists to understand the pattern of human migration and after that focus has been on existing traditional models of migration which uses census data such as gravity model and more recently developed radiation model. It is important to focus on these fundamental models and theories, as they become the base of more advanced model and help us to decide and understand which factors can be helpful while making the prediction related to human migration. The study of how artificial intelligence can be used in combination with traditional models and data driven unconventional models to predict the pattern of human migration more accurately has been done in the second part. The study of different kind of unconventional and early age experimental models that had been used to study the pattern of human migration using data generated through different kinds of sources like twitter, sim card and satellite imaging data has also been included in second part.

Il dialogo che intraprendiamo in questo saggio vuole offrire delle riflessioni sulla costruzione dell’archivio delle narrazioni della migrazione tra passato e presente, tra Europa e resto del mondo. Nello specifico, si guarderà a come le narrazioni vengono forgiate dagli scripts, ossia da quelle idee codificate e alquanto rigide imposte tanto dal discorso pubblico sui flussi migratori, quanto da quello che a livello più strettamente giuridico-processuale stabilisce i parametri del riconoscimento del diritto alla mobilità e all’asilo per migranti e rifugiati.

This article investigates and analyses the main characteristics and issues involving Western hegemonic feminisms, especially so-called 'radical feminism', on the topic of sex work and trafficking in persons/migration, to understand how these discussions have influenced the main conventions, regulations and legislation on this global subject. In particular, it enables understanding of how these regulations invisibilize and, sometimes, criminalize trans* and gender-diverse people in migratory contexts. The contributions to decolonial feminism and transfeminism made by decolonial trans writers are essential to analyse and critique some of the conceptions espoused by Western hegemonic and especially trans-exclusionary feminisms that have influenced the international anti-trafficking and anti-prostitution discourse today. These discourses often affect the voluntary migration of trans* and gender-diverse sex workers, mainly from the Global South, such as in the Brazilian case. This piece aims to bring a decolonial and Brazilian transfeminist critique to bear on the Western hegemonic discourse presented in many radical feminist debates, and in the leading international and national conventions and legislation on human trafficking, migration and sex work. The history of colonialism and slavery, the imposition of binary, white, heteropatriarchal and cissexist norms, and consequently the global economic model of capitalist hegemony, is essential to comprehend how these structural systems have generated enormous inequalities between and within several countries, as is the

The interaction between humans and other species and with the natural environment, and their appropriation of the natural resources without which life is impossible, must be a central element in history (Beinart, 2000). This is because human beings are, before anything else, biological entities. When dams are built, they create man-made lakes or reservoirs. These dams and resulting lakes are important to society as they provide areas with water for drinking, farming irrigation, hydroelectric power generation and flood management. This is the basic premise for the construction of great dams across the globe, and the construction of the Akosombo dam was not an exception.

COVID-19 pandemic has created a huge challenge in the lives of people for survival and especially for the state to deal with it. In a country, like India where a large number of people are living under poverty, migration has been the key livelihood strategy for survival. Migration and its impacts are not affirmative for those who come from the historical, structural underprivileged and disadvantageous group. Their lives and livelihoods are scattered around marginality. Migrants from poor socio-economic, distressed situations to meet the survival needs face a lot of challenges before and after migration. Considering these issues as background, this paper is to explore and analyze concerns and visibility of issues of the migrant worker, migration as livelihood strategy and struggle at the destination as well as at the source and; the state’s action and civil society organisation’s solidarity towards the migrant in COVID-19 pandemic lockdown e.g.  (elsewhere) media coverage mention the lack of state policy addressing such migrant workers issues and their need to deal with COVID-19 situation.
This Paper follows digital ethnography, applies primary data from a PhD research study about the Musahar Community in Uttar Pradesh and data through telephonic interaction with migrant workers in Mumbai. Purposive sampling technique has been applied for additional data, considering the objective of the paper about marginality and migrants, through telephonic interviews of social workers in two slums of Mumbai in Jogeshwari and M-East Ward area. Author has also collected data from the five Musahar community members who migrated to Maharashtra. Paper has observed the voices of the community through the media dialogue. The paper also tries to bring analytical understanding from observations around the argument migrant work’s marginality and contribute to the concerns of migrant issues of livelihood & marginality along with the state’s mechanism; and explore alternative ways to address such problems.

Della prima si legge nel giornale sanitario di bordo: «Passeggera di III classe. Età 31 anni. Maritata. Viaggia sola. Donna di fragile costituzione. Emotivamente provata. Ha sofferto quasi quotidianamente di naupatia. Quando viene ricoverata già in atto emorragia. La gravidanza è al 4° mese. Svuotamento con bisturi dell'utero. Resta due giorni a riposo in ospedale. Non ha mai avuto gravidanze in passato. A dire del marito ha sofferto di febbri malariche. Aborto già in atto al momento del ricovero. Inutile ogni cura prestata. Deceduta dopo un giorno di ricovero» 3. Nelle relazioni sanitarie compaiono, in genere, solo brevi annotazioni delle interruzioni di gravidanza: «Durante il viaggio di andata da Genova a Buenos Aires n. 3 donne ricoverate per aborto, 2 morte» 4 ; «Si ebbero alcuni casi di aborto con esiti fatali in due donne che già al momento dell'imbarco si presentavo in cattive condizioni di salute per esaurimento isico e denutrizione». 5 Dei parti avvenuti a bordo c'è solo la burocratica registrazione del numero dei nati e dei nati morti (Molinari, 2014). This is the introduction to the special issue (SI) on 'Data Matters: The Politics and Practices of Digital Border and Migration Management'. The SI calls for a renewed investigation on how data come to matter in the government of human mobility. To this end, it invites scholars in critical border, migration and security studies to engage with and mobilise insights, concepts and approaches as they have been developed in Science and Technology Studies (STS) and critical data studies. By introducing readers to debates on data colonialism, data feminism and data justice, the introduction discusses three crucial dimensions of data matters: (1) how scholars make enact data as matters of concern; (2) how data come to matter in contemporary border and mobility management and (3) the material 'matter' of data and processes of datafication.

Qu’est-ce que les mobilités humaines observées entre des pays issus de l’ancien empire colonial portugais nous apprennent de la contemporanéité de cet espace historique post-empire ? Et qu’est-ce que cet espace de la lusotopie a à nous dire de spécifique des mobilités humaines, mais aussi de l’immobilité, dans un contexte de mondialisation inégalitaire, caractérisé à la fois par la circulation d’élites cosmopolites et la fermeture des frontières nationales ? C’est en nous inscrivant dans la perspective de continuité historique des mobilités contemporaines, et en faisant par ailleurs nôtre la proposition de l’anthropologue portugais João de Pina-Cabral consistant à voir la lusotopie comme un « Ecumene » (2010) - espace d’intercommunications plus denses déterminées par le partage d’un passé historique commun - que nous proposons d’analyser le caractère centrifuge des flux contemporains observés au sein de l’ancien espace impérial portugais.

Participation à la Journée Inter-Années d'initiation à la communication : l'enquête ethnographique.

Étudiants et professeurs se joignent pour organiser une journée d’étude consacrée aux travaux des étudiants de l’institut d’ethnologie (L3, M1, M2 recherche et muséologie). Cet événement offre la possibilité aux participants de communiquer oralement un aspect de leurs recherches ethnographiques, qu’elles soient liées ou non à leur projet de mémoire. Il s’agit d’une initiation à la prise de parole publique et à la communication scientifique, activité relative à la profession de chercheur. Si l’étudiant peut considérer l’exercice comme un galop d’essai pour sa soutenance de mémoire de fin d’année, il est principalement question ici de découvrir et de s’approprier les techniques professionnelles de transmission orale du savoir ainsi que de se confronter à un public critique. Ce dernier sera composé des étudiants des différentes promotions, de doctorants, des enseignants et des chargés de cours de l’institut. Il interagira avec l’intervenant en le questionnant et en lui faisant part de ses observations de manière constructive, bienveillante et informelle, à propos de son travail et de sa performance orale.

This book offers a much-needed new political theory of an old phenomenon. The last decade alone has marked the highest number of migrations in recorded history. Constrained by environmental, economic, and political instability, scores of people are on the move. But other sorts of changes-from global tourism to undocumented labor-have led to the fact that to some extent, we are all becoming migrants. The migrant has become the political figure of our time. Rather than viewing migration as the exception to the rule of political fixity and citizenship, Thomas Nail reinterprets the history of political power from the perspective of the movement that defines the migrant in the first place. Applying his "kinopolitics" to several major historical conditions (territorial, political, juridical, and economic) and figures of migration (the nomad, the barbarian, the vagabond, and the proletariat), he provides fresh tools for the analysis of contemporary migration.

RESUMO: Nesta pesquisa foi utilizada a expansão banta na África subsaariana para investigar os processos de aprendizagem das comunidades bantas, que nesta pesquisa responderá pelos processos de difusão e assimilação de novas aprendizagens sociais. Por uma perspectiva da Antropologia da Educação, baseados em Fredrik Barth sobre fronteiras culturais e identidade étnica foram focalizadas as aprendizagens que compuseram essa difusão linguística durante um longo período histórico e em larga escala entre comunidades identificadas como bantas. As línguas proto-banto começaram a ser difundidas a partir de Camarões, por volta de 4000 AP, e modelaram a identidade das comunidades mediante constelações de aprendizagem. Observou-se que as práticas cotidianas, a posição social periférica dos atores e atrizes e interesses comerciais e políticos além de diferentes direcionamentos e momentos dessa difusão linguística perpetuaram práticas culturais similares de longa distância e em larga escala. Com efeito, determinados comportamentos sociais criaram e recriaram sentidos em torno das identidades comunitárias por meio de uma educação escondida: a produção e o uso de cerâmicas, a incorporação de elementos arábico-islâmicos e do sistema numérico suaíli em esquemas simbólicos do interior da África e a mulher como fator agregador de aprendizagens. ABSTRACT: It used the linguistic researches about Bantu expansion in Sub-Saharan Africa to inquiry about learning process in Bantu communities. Using Anthropology of Education based on Fredrik Barth's cultural borders and ethnic identity, it aimed on learning milieu related to linguistic diffusion during historical long-term and large-scale among Bantu communities. Proto-Bantu languages started their move in Cameroon aprox. 4000 BP and modeled communities' identity maintenance by learning constellations. Everyday practices, actors' and actress' in peripheral positions, commercial and politic benefits, and different directions and moments could sustain cultural similarities from long-distance and large-scale. As a result, certain social behaviors created and recreated meanings bound to communities' identity by a hidden education: the making and use of pottery, Arab and Islāmic elements and Kiswahili counting system into African hinterland symbolic schemes, and woman-factor of learnings.
