answer:
Christian
religion,
specifically
Creation.

Foster
believes
a
religion
necessitates

philosophy,
which
in
turn
entails
a
certain
science.
Foster
proposes
Christianity
depends
on
a
voluntaristic
theology;
this
means
that
God’s
creating
the
world
is
arbitrary.

cause

philosophically.

they
continued

perform
ancient
science.
I
argue
that
Foster’s
problematic
relationship
between
modern
and
ancient/medieval
science
stems
from
his
focus
on
Descartes.
Descartes’
ambiguity
in
terms
of
freedom
and
determination
leads
to
a
troubling
account
of
science
in
general.

Ultimately,
I
argue
that
Foster
is
convincing
regarding
relationship
between
the
Christianity
and
the
rejection
of
final
cause.
This
seems
to
be
the
impetus
of
modern
science.
I
do
not
believe
that
Christianity
must
do
this,
however.
Foster’s
troubling
account
of
the
progression
of
science
precludes
me
from
accepting
his
thesis
completely.
Instead,
I
propose
R.G.
Collingwood
as
a
better
alternative
to
Foster.
The
recasting
of
Foster’s
work
into
a
larger
historical
project
allows
for
future
work
in
the
examination
of
the
most
contemporary
of
sciences.

Dissertação apresentada como requisito para obtenção do grau Mestre em Filosofia pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação Lógica e Metafísica do Departamento de Filosofia da UFRJ.

O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar a correspondência integral entre Descartes e a Princesa Elisabeth da Boêmia, que ocorre entre os anos de 1643 e 1649. Observa-se, na literatura secundária, tanto uma defasagem no que se refere ao tratamento da filosofia prática cartesiana quanto uma ausência de comentários que considerem a correspondência com Elisabeth com devido protagonismo. De modo a suprimir essas duas carências, levantaremos, como hipótese central, a ideia de que a correspondência com Elisabeth é um contexto formal privilegiado para a elaboração de determinados conteúdos da filosofia prática do autor, nomeadamente de sua Medicina, Moral e Política. Para a comprovação de tal hipótese, retomaremos principalmente as teses expostas em sua teoria das noções primitivas e em sua metáfora da árvore da filosofia, propondo que é somente com o emprego da noção primitiva de união – ou seja, por meio dos sentidos ou da vida e das conversações comuns – que temas relativos à constituição humana podem ser abordados sem serem reduzidos ao seu aspecto puramente mental ou físico, tal como faz o Tratado das Paixões. A correspondência, assim, forneceria um registro das reflexões fundamentadas na experiência sensível. Em termos estruturais, a primeira parte da dissertação consistirá numa reconstrução das teses metafísicas do autor, tais como sua concepção de homem, de conhecimento sensível e de ciência, teses pressupostas nas discussões da correspondência. A segunda parte fará uma exposição crítica de seu conteúdo, que nomearemos, de modo geral, sua filosofia prática. Tal filosofia se caracterizará fundamentalmente por dois objetivos: por um lado, conservar a vida humana, por meio das técnicas espirituais e físicas fornecidas pela Medicina e pela Política e, por outro, não temer a morte, na medida em que sua Moral visa uma felicidade na indiferença em relação aos eventos mundanos.

Descartes’ disillusionment of the kind of knowledge he received from his predecessors, the scriptures and the senses made him set out his ingenious gigantic inquiry into the basis of not just acquiring certain knowledge but purifying the epistemic discipline by reining it from undue empirical infiltration; a discipline he felt had become toxic because of the uncritical and unscathed incursion of the traditional but paralyzed over-reliance on the information received from the senses. He was obsessed with the problem of intellectual certainty. Thus, the onerous task of building an edifice of knowledge that would be fortified enough that there will be no room for truths and doubts enveloped and led him to further seek to incarcerate as incriminating, the sensible data which was guilty of deception. Buttressing his reason for this, he opines thus: “…whatever I have accepted until now as most true has come to me through my senses. But occasionally I have found that they have deceived me, and it is unwise (as prudence dictates) to trust completely those who have deceived us even once…
The Meditations on First Philosophy, evinces this Cartesian non-effaceable thesis. Being one of the most engaging collections of arguments in the history of philosophy, it was a masterpiece of Rene Descartes. It resembles in many ways St Ignatius of Loyola’s Spiritual exercises. It contains the most definitive and eloquent statements of Descartes’ philosophy. Throughout the meditations, Descartes’ primary concern was the undaunted search for epistemic certitude, but nevertheless, in the final three meditations he moves from the epistemological problem of certainty to metaphysical questions about reality. Here Descartes demonstrates the existence of God and the distinction between the human soul (i.e. mind) and body. The Meditations take the form of a challenging philosophical game. At each turn he produces a belief about which he is certain; then he uses his creative imagination to see if there is any way to see if he could be mistaken. The Meditations on First Philosophy is a vivid representation of Descartes’ thoughts.

PRÉSENTATION DU COURS

Dans ce cours, qui vise à présenter quelques-unes des lectures/réceptions les plus significatives de la pensée de Nicolas Malebranche – et notamment de la Recherche de la vérité – pendant le XVIIIe siècle, je me concentrerai particulièrement sur la figure de Jean Meslier (1664-1729).

Étant donné que Meslier n’est pas aussi populaire parmi les étudiants et les chercheurs en philosophie que d’autres philosophes des Lumières, tels que Voltaire, Rousseau ou le baron d’Holbach, je vais d’abord faire une rapide présentation de ce curé athée, de sa vie et de ses œuvres.

Ensuite, je voudrais vous raconter un peu la manière dont était composée la petite bibliothèque du curé d’Etrépigny, et formuler quelques hypothèses sur ses pratiques de lecture. En fait, d’après moi, Meslier n’est qu’un « lecteur pyromane », qu’un incendiaire de la philosophie clandestine. En ce sens, je pense que son Mémoire des pensées et des sentiments pourrait être relié sans difficulté à d’autres « manuscrits philosophiques clandestins » – le corpus de textes sur lequel je travaille actuellement –, tels que L’Esprit de Spinoza ou L’âme matérielle, car ils adoptent tous la technique du copié-collé . Qu’est-ce que cela signifie ? Que leur originalité ne réside pas tant dans les idées et les arguments que ces textes présentent, mais dans la manière dont ces idées et ces arguments sont présentés. Selon Pierre-François Moreau, par exemple, les manuscrits ont souvent une « originalité d’intention » .

Enfin, en tenant compte de certains des exemples qu’on peut trouver dans le Mémoire des pensées et des sentiments (c. 1729), je voudrais vous montrer la façon dont Meslier a lu et a utilisé de nombreux passages de la Recherche de la vérité de Malebranche pour construire sa propre pensée. En d’autres termes, je vais essayer d’illustrer la manière dont la théologie rationnelle de Malebranche se transforme en matérialisme athée dans les dernières pages du manuscrit de Meslier. Mais auparavant, je vous rappellerai quelques-unes des thèses les plus importantes de Meslier, je passerai en revue la structure générale du Mémoire et je présenterai brièvement les discussions sur le rapport qui, selon différents spécialistes, peut être établi entre Meslier et Malebranche.

Ce cours est donc divisé en trois parties : la première est de nature biographique et bibliographique ; la seconde est liée à l’histoire du livre et de la lecture, ainsi qu’aux pratiques de réception et de production – autrement dit, de lecture et d’écriture – pendant le XVIIIe siècle ; la troisième, enfin, est de nature strictement philosophique, ou historiographique-philosophique.
