Ottoman language

The work presents etymologies of the Turkic names for the seven most important cereals: barley, corn, millet, oats, rice, rye and wheat. Altogether, 106 names are discussed.
As yet, this subject has not been dealt with as a whole. Propositions for etymologies of various names in single languages are scattered in dictionaries and articles, usually only accompanied by a brief explanation. Here, the author tries to provide a possibly comprehensive commentary.
Each entry presents a list of phonetic variants of the word, an overview of previous etymologies and the author’s standpoint expressed as exhaustively as possible but without loquacity.
The work closes with an enumeration and brief commentary of the most common naming patterns and semantic types which can be distinguished in the presented material.

As a sophisticated intellectual, one of the least known aspects of İbrahim Müteferrika, the founder of Turkish printing press, is his service as a diplomat. İbrahim Müteferrika went to Poland and undertook negotiations during a time when the Ottoman Empire was fighting against Austria and Russia. However, hitherto we have not had much information about this particular diplomatic mission. In this article, we will examine his embassy to Poland between December 1736 and February 1737 under the light of contemporaneous historical sources and archival documents, through his ambassadorial account dedicated to this mission which we have recently discovered.

In this piece, I explore the portraits of Ottoman Sultans found in the British Library's manuscript Or 9505. I contextualize the work within the broader tradition of Ottoman historiography, and then compare the illustrations - which are unique in their aesthetics - with those found in other British Library manuscripts.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE 18th С. ALEPPO’S ARMENIAN COMMUNITY IN ALEXANDER RUSSELL’S “THE NATURAL HISTORY OF ALEPPO”

The book "Natural History of Aleppo", by Alexander Russell, is an important source about the history of Armenian community in Aleppo during the Ottoman period.
Al. Russell was a Scottish physician and naturalist delegated to Aleppo in 1740. Having been appointed as a physician to the English factory there, and, gaining the confidence of the local Pasha, he became the chief medical practitioner of the city. In 1754, he returned to England and, two years later, published his Natural History of Aleppo. In 1794, Patrick Russell, his half-brother, assumed the second edition, revising and expanding the text. Later, the book was translated into different languages.
The title of the book implies that the research refers to fauna and flora of Aleppo, and also the climatic conditions of the city and its surroundings. Moreover, Al. Russell’s book contains significant information about Non-Muslim communities of Aleppo (Greek, Assyrian, Maronite and Armenian), such as the number of the population of each community, the relationship between them and with Muslims, in particular, with Turks living in Aleppo.
The study of above-mentioned issues allows us to clarify and to present the actual status of Armenians living in Aleppo in the first half of the 18th century, which mostly depended on the policy pursued by the local authorities.

My undergraduate graduation thesis , dealing with the trancription and translation into modern greek of the ottoman  "tapu" title deeds which are kept in the Arta's department of the General State Archives of Greece .
In addition to the document transcription,a diplomatic , typology and historical reaserch took place in this thesis. The academic contribution of the study is historically precious because it will bring to light a less studied historical period of the greek history. Through the study of ottoman paleography and diplomatics can more easily be defined the relations between the  ottoman  central and local authorities  and the peasants-tax peyers . The documents examined in ths study are 153  overall and the were issued in 1893

Political marriages in the Middle Ages were safe tools of diplomacy and they were often contracted in order to establish peace, strengthen political ties and stabilize the relations in entire regions. It is for these reasons that the marriages of Serbian princesses Olivera Lazarevic and Mara Brankovic were concluded with the Turkish Sultan Bayezid I and Murad II. With their arrival at the Turkish court, however, the two Serbian women achieved much more than ensuring the current peace and a stable situation in the region.

DOBRUDJA IN OTTOMAN TIMES:
THE KAZA OF HÂRȘOVA (16TH C)
Abstract
The Ottoman chancery documents, such as defters, orders, regulations, are a key source for studying Dobrudja under Ottoman rule, revealing its administrative, military and economic structures. This paper draws on toponymical, topographical and administrative information taken from eight Ottoman registers, all dating from the sixteenth century. The toponymy and the rural habitat are interpreted from a long-time perspective, assessing the continuity between the Ottoman and the pre-Ottoman structures. The Dobrudja case is also placed in the larger image of the dynamics of the Ottoman rural landscape. This article identifies both military and non-military Ottoman institutions in Dobrudja, such a vozar, derbendci, ellici, gümrükçi, müsellem, akıncı. Consequently, it proposes a comparative analysis between the Ottoman power structures and the previous, imperial, Byzantine ones. A chronological and cartographic inventory of the human settlements in Ottoman Dobrudja argues for a reconsideration of their synchronic and diachronic evolution.

The purpose of this guide is to offer a brief introduction to the rules of writing the Arabo-Persian script of the Ottoman orthography. Given that Ottoman orthography was never fully systemized, this somehow appears as a paradox endeavour, yet, the sometimes extremely demanding approach in textbooks which tend to provide the reader with a lot of scattered information made a summarized guide and introduction seem useful. The only goal of this introduction is to provide the learner with orientation and an overview and synopsis of the main concepts and rules of Ottoman orthography. Therefore, it is by default simplified and not intended for independent learning, but rather as a first introduction and later supplement for quick reference when using a proper textbook of Ottoman Turkish. As the study of Ottoman Turkish, to my view, is more about transcription and analysing texts than about fluent reading and instant understanding, the introduction tends to put emphasis on the many options for writing and reading the words. The discussion of the Arabic and Persian elements of orthography is limited to what seemed the most necessary for Ottoman (which is nevertheless quite a lot). The structure of the introduction tries to mimic the likely workflow with textbooks, i.e. it tries to progress through phenomena the learner is likely to encounter at earlier point in the study to the ones which will be encountered later (this also splits some chapters, e.g. some of the Arabic ḥarekāt-diacritics are dealt with earlier than other, e.g. the medde-diacritic is dealt with at the begging, as the learner will quickly encounter the elif medde denoting a word-initial a-vowel). The learner should be familiar with the modern Turkish alphabet and its pronunciation as the pronunciation is referred to by means of the modern Turkish alphabet (and not IPA). In the first place, I have prepared this introduction mainly from notes I took while learning myself, using the standard modern textbook of Ottoman for the non-native Turkish speaker by Korkut Buğday  as well as some other sources (listed in the bibliography) and taking notes for what appeared important to me. As I am no Ottomanist by training, but rather engage in the study of the language and its literature on my own and by myself, I will appreciate any comments (especially about the usability of the guide, e.g. about the clearness of the explanations and the order of the chapters), suggestions and, above all, corrections.

Das Buch gibt einen Überblick über die arabische Sprache in ihrem kulturellen und historischen Rahmen. Es berücksichtigt sowohl das Verhältnis zwischen arabischer Sprache und Islam als auch die Einbettung in die semitische Sprachfamilie. Weitere Schwerpunkte sind das moderne Hocharabisch und die Dialekte. In allen Kapiteln wird die Relevanz der historischen Entwicklungen für die Gegenwart aufgezeigt. Zahlreiche Abbildungen, Schaubilder und Karten illustrieren jedes Thema.

SUMMARY
Mustafayev Sh.M. From the Seljuks to the Ottomans. Ethno-political processes in the Turkic milieu of Asia Minor in the 11-15 centuries.

The monograph analyzes the complex ethno-political processes in Asia Minor on a broad chronological background since the time of the conquest of the region by the Oghuz-Turkmen tribes in the 11 century up to the final establishment of the Ottoman political hegemony at the end of the 15 century. It attempts to trace the stages of the ethnic history of the Turkish people in the Middle Ages, and to establish the connection between its ethnic integration and political changes in Anatolia. The book examines the formation of the Turkic ethnic milieu in Anatolia in the Seljuk period, its subsequent evolution following the collapse of the Seljuk Sultanate in Asia Minor under impingements of the Mongols, the fragmentation of political power in Anatolia and the establishment of a number of principalities, as well as the fierce struggle for leadership in the region between the new entities, and the gradual rise of the Ottoman State. It also assesses the impact of historical events on the dynamics of the Turkic ethnic consciousness and identity.
The book introduces a number of milestones in the evolution of Turkic ethnic milieu of Asia Minor. Seljuk conquest of the Middle East in the 11 century paved the way for the gradual formation of a Turkic ethnic milieu in a large geographical area from the Caspian coast in the east to the Aegean Sea coast in the west. In the second half of the 12 – early 13 centuries there was relative political integrity of this area, when a large part of Anatolia was united under the Seljuk Sultanate in Asia Minor. This fragile stability was breached in result of Mongol conquest in the mid-13 century. However, the political domination of the Mongols in Asia Minor lasted until the early 14 century. Last Seljuk sultans, vassals of Ilkhanid court in Azerbaijan, lost their power over Anatolia, as well as the legitimacy in the eyes of their subjects, particularly bellicose Turkmen tribes who settled in “uj” zone or the border with Byzantium. The Ilkhanid control over Asia Minor also gradually weakened, which opened the way for the appearance of new power centers on the scene. Thus the era of political fragmentation in Turkey’s medieval history began.
By the beginning of the 14 century the whole territory of Anatolia disintegrated into smaller state formations – principalities. New Turkic emirates were competing with each other for the military and political leadership and mission of the “gatherer” of the Anatolian lands or fragments of the Seljuk Sultanate. At the same time, in the public mind of Turkic Anatolia it was a replacement of cultural ideals of Seljuk era, inspired by the influence of Persian literature and art, by other values caused by new political realities. This was manifested in the growth of interest of political elites in the Anatolian emirates to the national language, the birth and rapid development of Turkish literature in Asia Minor, the start of translation activity in the courts of the rulers, the growth of the number of manuscripts in Turkish, etc.
Two main political centers or poles, which can be roughly described as “Western” and “Eastern”, gradually stood out in the course of the confrontation within the Turkic milieu in Asia Minor. The Western pole has always been associated with the Ottoman Empire, while the Eastern pole, which was opposing the Ottomans, was represented by traditional Turkic principalities in Asia Minor (Karaman principality, State of Kadi Burhan ad-Din Ahmed, Aqqoyunlu State) successively replacing each other. The question of which of them would be able to take on the mission of “heir” of the Seljuk Sultanate and accomplish the task of unification of Asia Minor under its own rule had crucial significance for the whole history of the Turkic Anatolia. In other words, there was a question about the guiding direction line of new centralization of Asia Minor – from west to east or vice versa? Thus, the struggle between the two poles determined all further historical evolution of the Turkic milieu of Asia Minor. The final victory of the Western or the Ottoman pole promoted further political consolidation and integration of the Turkic ethnic and cultural milieu of Asia Minor around the Ottoman Empire.


В книге на широком хронологическом фоне анализируются сложные этнополитические процессы в Малой Азии со времени завоевания региона в XI столетии огузо-туркменскими племенами и до окончательного установления османской политической гегемонии в конце XV в. На основе обширного круга источников делается попытка проследить различные этапы этнической истории турецкого народа, установить органическую связь процессов этнической интеграции с политическими изменениями в Анатолии. Выявляются особенности формирования в Анатолии тюркской этнической среды в сельджукский период, ее последующей эволюции после распада централизованного Сельджукского государства Малой Азии под ударами монголов, дробления политической власти в Анатолии и образования ряда эмиратов (бейликов); исследуются отношения и ожесточенная борьба за лидерство в регионе между этими государственными образованиями и постепенное возвышение Османского государства, оценивается влияние исторических событий на динамику развития тюркского этнического сознания и идентичности.

This volume consists of articles of various lengths on issues related
to the social and political history of the Ottoman state. Some of the
articles, based on original archival sources, were written as independent
studies; others were chapters that conformed to the general themes of larger works; a few were commentaries on other colleagues'
publications. In other words, these writings do not revolve around
a single topic or a single Ottoman historical phase, although the
nineteenth century prevails. Yet, as the table of contents indicates,
they can be classified into three broad categories, namely, the Ottoman
socio-political transformation, the population movements, notably
immigration-migration, and finally, in the Balkans and elsewhere, the
formation of nation-states, which was accompanied by the change
of religious identities into political ones and the emergence of nationalism. In essence, the writings in this volume deal with the transformation of the late Ottoman state that culminated in the rise of
modern Turkey. That transformation also has been elaborated upon,
with a synthesis of lengthy new materials, in a recent publication
that covers roughly the period from 1850 to 1918 and so includes
the rise of the Republic. Other relevant information may be found
in a number of my books published at various dates. In addition,
several of my review essays discuss the conceptual and methodological
issues related to Ottoman history and Republican Turkey.

The Phanariots-Grecophone Christian elites who ruled the Danubian principalities in the eighteenth century-were the only non-Muslims in the Ottoman Empire who claimed power by virtue of their command of the Turkish language. Why were they the rare exception and what does their story reveal about the ways in which power and language were intertwined in the early modern Ottoman Empire? The implicit power relations embedded in the Turkish language are rendered visible in a unique text written in 1731 in which Constantine Mavrocordatos, a Phanariot prince, attempted to school his younger brother in Turkish through a series of twelve, play-like dialogues. The dialogues did not aim to teach the formal grammar of Turkish but to demonstrate the power of speech by familiarizing the reader with the eloquent and witty repartee of Ottoman bureaucrats. Through an analysis of the text-which includes reestablishing its authorship and date of composition-the article examines the Phanariots' liminal position in Ottoman governance, especially in the newly ascendant imperial bureaucracy, through the prism of language. In doing so, it also rewrites the place of the Mavrocordatos family in the story of the Enlightenment in the Ottoman Empire.

This study aims to follow the Ottoman Empire's stands on Constantine's requests, particularly that of the designation of Ahmed Bey as the Pacha of Algeria replacing his predecessor Hussein Dey who was removed by the French forces following their conquest of Algeria in 1830. This study attempts to analyze the archived correspondences between Ahmed Bey and the Ottoman state and the context in which they occurred while indicating the State's position on Ahmed Bey's correspondence to Sublime Porte and the rationale behind it. Finally, the French state's handling of Ahmed Bey's demands through its ambassador in Istanbul will be discussed in the context of the international influences and the political climate of the region.

Cezayir valisi olarak tayin edilmesi konusundaki Konstantîn’den
iletilen taleplere karşı Osmanlı Devleti’nin tutumunu ortaya koymayı
amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada temel olarak bu konu hakkında “Ahmed
Bey” ile “Babıali” arasında geçen ve Türkiye’deki Osmanlı
arşivlerinde bulunan resmi yazışmaların tahliline dayanılacaktır.
Ancak bu yazışmaları incelemeden önce, onunla bağlantılı genel
bağlamdan bahsedilecek ve Osmanlı Devleti’nin bu talepleri nasıl
karşıladığı ve bunun ardında yatan nedenler açıklanacaktır. Aynı
zamanda, İstanbul’daki büyükelçisi tarafından temsil edilen
Fransa’nın tavrına ve konumuna değinilecektir. Çalışmanın konusu,
ilgili dönemde Mağrip’te mevcut olan genel bağlam ve uluslararası
tarafların durumlar üzerindeki etkisinin kapsamı ile
ilişkilendirilmeye çalışılmıştır.

THE OTTOMAN INSCRIPTIONS OF HYPATA (BADRACIK)

The published epigraphic material derives from the city of Hypata (Ottoman Badracık). The corpus comprises four inscriptions in total, two funerary and two dedicatory. The collection covers the period from the late eighteenth to the early nineteenth century. The material on which they are inscribed is white coarse-grain marble of high quality, meticulously sculpted (nos 1, 3-4) and limestone (no. 2). The decorative patterns of the main side consist of the equitant shallow cartouches, which accommodate embossed inscriptions in a relief technique. The type of script most frequently used is the basīt celī sülüs, which varies from its simplest form (kırma) on the inscription no. 4, to its calligraphic style detected on the inscriptions nos 1 and 3.

The newspaper of Papağan, started to be published by Orhan Seyfi on the date of 23 April 1924, continued its publishing life during 239 issues. In this study, it is examined two-year-publication activity of Papağan whose content was full of literary texts written by humorous style and that gave important information about the period when the newspaper was published. In the first section of the study, consisting of five sections, it is mentioned that development process of Turkish press and made an evaluation about literature and press in the axis of humor and satire. In the second section, Papağan’s start and process of broadcast, editorial policy and shape features are investigated; its writer, poet and cartoonist team is introduced by considering their activities in the newspaper of Papağan. At the end of the second section, genres that make up the content of the newspaper are evaluated. In the third section, there are two indexs: The first one is created according to the names of authors and poets, and the second one is created according to the genres of texts in the newspaper. In the fourth section, selected texts chosen from the newspaper, prepared by considering its features, are transliterated into Latin alphabet. In the fifth section, it is made a general assessment about the charectiristics, significance and content of the newspaper.

Ali Ufkî Bey (Wojciech Bobowski) is one of the most important figures of the Turco-Polish cultural relations, and a product of both worlds. He was born around 1610 in a village near Lviv, which belonged to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth at the time. He was captured during a war and brought to Istanbul. He was then educated at the Ottoman court and served as interpreter and counselor for many years. He was a musician and could speak several languages. After his release, he chose not to leave Istanbul, where he probably died around 1675. Ali Ufkî Bey left behind various works on music, languages, religion and Ottoman court life. From a philological and musical point of view, this paper will discuss a hymn, which is found in both of his major works containing notes and texts. This hymn was released as a cassette sound recording in Turkey in the late 1980s. Gaining certain popularity since then, it is written and interpreted with a modern pronunciation, containing different musical features and notations by modern musicians. In this paper I will try to reconstruct the text and music, which is to be followed by a live oud performance and singing of the hymn adhering to its authenticity.

Harput, sazıyla sözüyle çok zengin bir kültürel geçmişe sahiptir. Klasik edebiyatımız açısından da farklı ve dikkat çekici edebî muhitlerden biridir. Zira 19. asra kadar yetişen divan şairlerin sayısı birkaç sima ile sınırlı iken ve bu asırdan itibaren divan şiiri nihayete ererken Harput’ta âdetâ yeniden doğmuş gibidir. Bugün Harputlu olan ve klasik şiirle iştigal etmiş kırk dolayında şairin varlığı bilinmektedir. Bunlardan biri de pek çok meziyetinin yanında aruzla da şiirler yazarak divan geleneğinin bir neferi olmuş Çarsancaklı Bedri Bey’dir. Ailesinin kökü I. Selim devrine kadar uzanan Çarsancak ağalarından olan Bedri Çarsancaklı, 1888-1972 yılları arasında yaşamış çok yönlü bir şair ve siyasetçidir. Şeyh Sait İsyanı’nı bastıran öncülerden olduğu için takdir-nâme verilmiş, daha sonra  ömrünün bir kısmını sürgünde geçirmek zorunda kalmıştır. 1950’li yıllarda Demokrat Parti’den siyasete atılmış ve Anıtkabir’i ziyaret eden Elazığ heyeti adına defteri ilk dolduran kişi olmuştur. Bedrî Bey, dayısı meşhur şair Hacı Hayrî Bey’in de tesiriyle şiire başlamış ve hem aruzla hem de heceyle yüzlerce şiir yazmıştır. Her ne kadar birinci sınıf bir şair olmayı başaramayıp mahallî düzeyde kalsa da Harput’un kültür ve edebiyatında iz bırakmış bir şahsiyettir. Bu çalışmada daha evvel hakkında bir çalışma yapılmamış Bedrî Çarsancaklı’nın oğlundan şahsımıza intikal etmiş bilgi ve belgeler ışığında hayatı ve edebî şahsiyetine dikkat çekilerek 20. asır divan edebiyatındaki yeri ortaya konulacaktır.

Language is a crucial component of categorizing and contextualizing manuscripts. At times, curators and cataloguers have noted the "incorrect" orthographies of manuscript texts, positioning them in relation to orthographic standards that might be anachronistic or constructed post-factum. In the current paper, I argue that such categorization creates an erroneous impression of the dominance of standardization. In doing so, I posit that the term "erroneous" might mask diachronic orthographic change; dialect variation; and the influence of performance on written texts. I support my arguments using examples from the British Library's collection of Oghuz Turkic manuscripts from Rumelia, Anatolia and the Caucasus.

Şair tezkireleri, şairlerin hayatları hakkında bilgi veren, şiirlerinden örnekler sunan birer edebiyat tarihi kaynağı olmalarının yanında -özellikle edebî değerlendirmeler ihtiva eden bir kısım tezkireler itibarıyla- edebiyat eleştirisi açısından da önemli metinlerdir. Klasik Türk şiirinin edebî estetiğini ve zevkini anlama ve duyma hususunda klasik dönemde kaleme alınmış bu tür metinlerdeki beğeni, zevk ve tercihlerin bilinmesi son derece önem taşıyan bir husustur. Bu açıdan, bu eserlerdeki edebî eleştirinin tespiti, incelikli bir analizle ortaya konması ve değerlendirilmesinin yanında, tezkirelerde kullanılan şiir ve şair vasfındaki tenkit terim ve ifadelerinin örnekler ekseninde izahı gibi hususların faydası ve hatta gereği aşikârdır. Bu çalışma, Latîfî Tezkiresi özelinde klasik Türk edebiyatı eleştiri terimleri çalışmalarına bir katkı sunmak gayesindedir. Esasen bu kitap, Latîfî Tezkiresi’nde Edebî Eleştiri Terimleri ve Edebiyat Eleştirisi başlıklı, 2018 yılında tamamlanmış doktora tezimin son bölümünü oluşturan ansiklopedik sözlük kısmının yeniden tasnif edilerek düzenlenmiş hâlidir. Latîfî’nin 1546 yılında tamamladığı Tezkiretü’ş-şu‘arâ ve Tabsıratü’n-Nuzamâ adlı eseri, devrin şairleri hakkında önemli bilgiler ve şiir örnekleri ihtiva ettiği gibi edebî eleştiri açısından da türünün en özgün ve doyurucu metinlerindendir. Şiir, şair, nesir ve nâsir (nesir müellifi) değerlendirmelerinde kullanılan terimler, bir metnin veya müellifinin niteliğine yönelik değerlendirme ifadeleri açısından dikkat çekici bir zenginliğe ve derinliğe sahiptir. Bu çalışmada Latîfî Tezkiresindeki edebî tenkit terimleri örneklerle izah edilmiştir.
Şu ana dek Latîfî Tezkiresi’nde edebiyat eleştirisini inceleyen kitap veya tez mahiyetinde bazı çalışmalar yapılmıştır (Bkz. Andrews 1970; Gür 2009; Tolasa 2002). Şu ana kadar yapılan bu tür çalışmalar, tezkiredeki eleştirinin mahiyetine dair tespit ve değerlendirmelerle Latîfî’deki edebî tenkidin anlaşılmasına katkı sağlamışlardır. Tolasa’nın çalışmasında 16. yüzyıl tezkirelerindeki edebiyat eleştirisinin yanında bu eserlerde kullanılan bazı terimlere dair bilgi ve örnekler de sunulmaktadır. Bu yönüyle bu eserler ve bu türden çalışmalar, Latîfî’deki eleştirinin ve eleştiri terimlerinin geniş bir şekilde ele alınacağı bu çalışmaya zemin hazırladıkları için teşekkürü hak etmektedir.
Elinizdeki bu kitap Latîfî Tezkiresi’ndeki edebî eleştiri terimlerinin açıklamalı sözlüğünden oluşmaktadır. Kitapta, Latîfî’nin şiir, şair, nesir ve nâsir tenkidinde kullandığı terimler ve/veya değerlendirme ifadeleri, alfabetik olarak sıralanmış maddeler hâlinde izah edilmektedir. Söz konusu terimin şiir, şair, nesir ve nâsir eleştirilerinden hangisine ait olduğu madde başlığının hemen yanında köşeli parantez içinde (mesela ele alınan ifade bir şiir eleştirisi terimi ise “[şiir]” şeklinde) belirtilmiştir. Tezkirede bazı terimler (mesela “belâgat”) şiir, şair, nesir ve nâsir eleştiri terimi olarak ayrı ayrı değerlendirilebilecek tarzda kullanılmıştır. Bu durumda aynı kelimeden oluşan mad- deler arasındaki farklılığı yanındaki “[şiir]”, “[şair]”, “[nesir]” ve “[nâsir]” ifadeleri belirtmiş olmaktadır. Aynı kelimenin farklı alanlardaki kullanımından oluşan bu tür maddelerde sıralama önceliği “[şiir], [şair], [nesir], [nâsir]” şeklindedir. Madde başı olan terimlerin veya terim olma ihtimali bulunan kelime ve kavramların izahında öncelikle -çoğu kez lügatlerden yararlanarak- kelimenin/terimin söz- lük anlamı verilmiş, ardından tezkiredeki kullanımından örneklerle birlikte şiir/şair/nesir/nâsir değerlendirme ifadesi olarak hangi anlam ve/veya fonksiyonları taşıdığı tespit edilip değerlendirilmeye çalışılmıştır. Çalışma, bu yönleriyle Latîfî Tezkiresi’ndeki edebî eleştiri terimlerinin izahını içeren ansiklopedik bir sözlük mahiyetindedir. Bu çalışmanın; Latîfî’nin kullandığı edebî eleştiri terim ve ifadelerinin mahiyet ve işlevine yönelik yapılan izahlarla klasik Türk edebi- yatı edebî eleştirisi terimlerinin anlaşılmasında -Latîfî Tezkiresi özelinden örneklerle- bir kaynak eser olması da hedeflenmiştir. Klasik Türk şiirinin estetik anlayışını, devrin şiir anlayış ve zevkini görmek açısından o günün değerlendirme terim, kavram ve ifadelerinin anlaşılmasının ve devrin anlayışı içerisinde taşıdığı mana ve fonksiyonun ortaya konmasının önemi aşikârdır. Bu yönüyle bu çalışmanın hâlâ çalışılacak pek çok meselenin yer aldığı bu alandaki boşluğun doldurulmasına yardımcı olması ümit edilmektedir.
Berrak bir hüküm vermek için geniş kapsamlı bir araştırma gerekse de şunu söyleyebiliriz ki Latîfî Tezkiresi, şiir eleştirisindeki zenginliği yönüyle diğer tezkirelere bu hususta kaynaklık etmiş ve Latîfî’nin kullandığı eleştiri terminolojisi Türkçe şair tezkirelerin- deki edebî eleştiri terminolojisinin nüvesini oluşturmuştur. Bu yönleriyle Latîfî’nin Tezkiretü’ş-Şu‘arâ ve Tabsıratû’n-Nuzamâ adlı tezkiresi klasik Türk edebiyatının en temel edebî eleştiri kaynaklarından biri, belki de birincisidir.
Bu çalışmanın temel gayesi; Latîfî’deki edebî eleştiri terminolojisinin açıklamalı/ansiklopedik sözlüğünü oluşturmak ve böylece klasik Türk edebiyatında en temel tenkit metinlerinden biri özelinde klasik Türk şiirinde eleştirinin mahiyeti ve klasik Türk şiirinin estetiği hakkında doyurucu bilgi, değerlendirme ve neticelere ulaşılmasına katkı sağlamaktır. Böylece Latîfî Tezkiresi, tezkirelerde tenkit, Türk edebiyatında eleştiri vb. konulara yeni ve özgün bir bakış açısı getirilebilir, daha sonraki çalışmaların zenginleşerek ve derinleşerek devam etmesine katkı sağlanabilirse çalışma -az önce de zikredilen- gayesine ulaşmış olacaktır.
Bu çalışmanın tamamlanmasını ve bu kitabın ortaya çıkmasını nasip eden Cenâb-ı Mevlâ’ya şükürler ediyorum. İnşallah bu çalışma hayırlara ve güzelliklere vesile olur.

Based on Ottoman historiographical and literary sources of the seventeenth century (Kınalızade, Mustafa Ali, Kâtip Çelebi, Na'ima, Defterdar Mehmed Paşa etc.), this paper analyzes the vocabulary used by the Ottoman elite for the lower social strata of Istanbul, trying to trace its attitude towards the class stratification of Ottoman society. Special emphasis is given to various specific social groups (manav, şehr oğlanı, etc.), that belonged potentially to the “mob” of the city. Finally, the paper studies some cases of participation of these masses to the military rebellions of the seventeenth century, focusing again on the vocabulary used by the contemporary chroniclers.

The Glossarium Sabicum, Persicum, Turcicum, et Arabicum (henceforth, Glossarium) is a quarto manuscript in the collection of the Leiden University Library, where it is accessioned as Acad. 222. Even though the Glossarium has the appearance of a set of field notes, hastily compiled and subsequently left unedited, a cautious analysis of its pages will reward the reader with a remarkably accurate and surprisingly consistent first attempt at documenting a language. This language, identified herein as “Sabian,” must not be confused with either Classical Mandaic or Neo-Mandaic, but approached as a separate language in its own right.
