_The Physiology of Love and Other Writings_ is the first English annotated collection of Mantegazza’s selected works. In my extensive introductory essay, Mantegazza’s hybrid contributions from fiction, travel-writing, and ethnography to physiology, medicine, and politics are reevaluated as instances of a proto-cultural-studies approach attuned to the cross-fertilization of disciplines and the circulation of ideas in a period of European intellectual history that defied the notion of specialization.

Italian physician Paolo Mantegazza's classification of nervine nutrients (alimenti nervosi) is the first systematic theory of drugs authored by a modern European scientist. The initial formulation of his drug classification appears in his 1858 treatise "On the Hygienic and Medicinal Properties of Coca and on Nervine Nourishment in General" ("Sulle virtù medicinali e igieniche della coca e sugli alimenti nervosi in generale"). Gathering under this heading dozens of psycho-active substances, including coffee, coca, and tobacco, Mantegazza hypothesized that these "nutrients" had in common the ability to stimulate the nervous system. This article examines how Mantegazza's treatise refracts 19 th century ideas about race, climate, and energy that attributed the presumed inferiority of certain races and nations—including Italy—to climatic influences which hindered their social and economic development. Mantegazza saw the coca leaf as combatting those climate-induced effects and therefore as a potential means of paving Italy's path to modernity.

Angelo Bargoni, già ministro all’Istruzione pubblica, è incaricato dal Comitato di reperire i resti del poeta e sovraintendere il trasferimento.

In un’articolata rete di rimandi la salma di Ugo Foscolo assume il valore di simbolo del nuovo regno, in un intreccio tra Mazzini, Garibaldi, un Risorgimento didattico e una città, Firenze, ed una nazione, l’Italia, ancora alla ricerca di una propria identità.
Il saggio ricostruisce le vicende politiche, culturali, organizzative dell’evento, utilizzando una scelta di documenti inediti in gran parte conservati presso l’Archivio storico del Comune di Firenze.

"A genius still hovers over that blessed island..." Ugo Foscolo from London to Florence in 1871
On June 24th, 1871 the mortal remains of Ugo Foscolo, exiled since 1827, arrive from Chiswick Cemetery in London to be buried in the church of Santa Croce.
The complex and sumptuous ceremony, made possible by a committee established in 1870 – composed, among others, of Ubaldino Peruzzi (president), Pier Silvestro Leopardi, Michele Coppino, Guido Corsini – is the last act of the Capital of the Kingdom in Florence: from July 1st, 1871 Rome will be the seat of the national parliament and the power it represents.
Angelo Bargoni, former Minister of Public Education, is charged by the Committee with finding the poet's remains and overseeing their transferal.
In Florence, Paolo Mantegazza examines them, in search of the "genius".
In an articulated network of references, the body of Ugo Foscolo takes on the value as a symbol of the new kingdom, entangled with Mazzini, Garibaldi, a didactic Risorgimento and a city, Florence, and a nation, Italy, still in search of an identity of its own.
The essay reconstructs the political, cultural and organisational vicissitudes of the event, using a selection of unpublished documents largely preserved in the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Florence.

This article investigates the epistemological common ground between positivism and "Bildwissenschaft" through the analysis of the legacy of Tito Vignoli and Paolo Mantegazza's thought in Aby Warburg's theory. My aim is to show how the 20th century interpretation of positivism has shaped our reading and understanding of it, often reducing the forward-thinking of the authors of this period. It will point out how positivism has taken into account arguments and methods inherited by contemporary Visual Studies and Cultural Studies.

This article investigates the nineteenth-century notions of expression and mimicry in natural science. It will focus especially on Aby Warburg's concept of Pathosformel. My archival research at the Warburg Institute in London showed that Warburg was interested in Paolo Mantegazza’s theories about mimicry and expression (1831-1910). A prominent physician and anthropologist, Mantegazza developed the views that Charles Darwin expressed in his work The expression of the emotions in man and animals (1872). In this paper I will explore how mimicry can perform an expressive and a physical function at the same time: gestural forms reflect a primitive disposition of the relation between man and world and represent the deepest layer of communication. I will show how the body can be considered as a metaphor of this early bond.

The careers and lives of Enrico Hillyer Giglioli and Paolo Mantegazza have many common aspects. Both had a strong interest in Ethnology and held roles as Vice President and President, respectively, of the Italian Society of Anthropology and Ethnology (Società Italiana di Antropologia ed Etnologia). In addition, both were professors in the same 40 years at the Institute of Advanced Studies, Practices and Specialization (l’Istituto di Studi Superiori Pratici e di Perfezionamento) and directed Museums in their respective areas of expertise which are now sections and united in the Natural History Museum of the University of Florence. Both were born into families, which were active in
the Italian Risorgimento. Both began their careers making voyages to distant continents, voyages that left an indelible mark on their cultural formation and scientific interests. The material and cultural exchanges between the two men were multiple and they formed a friendship that began when both arrived in Florence in 1869 and lasted for the rest of their lives.

This volume on the relationships between decadent literature and anthropology in late 19th- and early 20th-century Europe studies the unnoticed connection between, on the one hand, a purposeless and ephemeral beauty, and, on the other hand, the disinterestedness and the spontaneity ascribed by anthropologists to the ceremonial expenditure of “primitive” civilizations. The book highlights how, in those two apparently opposed discourses, prodigality and uselessness challenge the Western cult of profit by working in two directions: beauty is a form of lavishness, and lavishness is a source of beauty. An innovative theoretical and cultural framework at the crossroads of aesthetics, anthropology, and philosophy allows me to reexamine the works of O. Wilde, G. D’Annunzio, and J.-K. Huysmans, and to claim the crucial role of neglected authors like Paolo Mantegazza and Vernon Lee in what I trace as the emergence of a proto-theorization of gift-exchange in the European fin de siècle culture. The pervasiveness of symbolic economy in those writers establishes a new dynamic relationship between decadence and modernism, and also exposes the limits of the allegedly disinterested forms of expenditure that will soon lure the modernists to go “primitive”.

Le colloque sera centré sur les discours produits au 19e siècle et au début du 20e siècle sur l’émancipation des femmes en Italie dans toute leur variété et leur complexité, y compris les discours opposés à l’indépendance féminine. On prêtera une attention précise aux multiples déclinaisons du féminisme en Italie (les revendications des écrivaines, des « émancipationnistes »-emancipatrici, ainsi que des défenseurs des droits des femmes) au delà de la tendance hagiographique qui a consisté à présenter des biographies élogieuses et idéalisées des femmes d’action du Risorgimento, ainsi que des interprétations historiographiques qui ont souvent réduit les positions féministes aux revendications suffragistes. Les récentes recherches en histoire culturelle, qui ont considérablement élargi l’approche de l’histoire des femmes au cours de la période de la construction de la nation italienne, seront ici mobilisées pour faire émerger des lectures originales et présenter des pensées méconnues.

L'objet de cet article est de démontrer que l'interrogation portant sur les croyances au fantôme accompagne la naissance de l'anthropologie, et cela avant même l'institution de la discipline, dès le XVIe siècle. Mais au delà de la topique spectrale, c'est de la « fonction spectre » et de ses effets sur le discours anthropologique que l'on voudrait tenter l'histoire. Le fantôme s'avère en effet très vite un opérateur anthropologique performant. Il sert tous les partages : du païen et du chrétien, du protestant et du catholique, du civilisé et du sauvage, du lettré et du vulgaire, du sociologue ou de l'anthropologue et du « folkloriste ». La rencontre du fantôme et de l'anthropologue apparaît ainsi non seulement comme une scène primitive au sens où elle signale une origine possible de la discipline anthropologique, mais aussi parce qu'elle va servir, au temps de son institution disciplinaire au XIXe siècle, à définir une forme « primitive » de religion. Elle est enfin scène primitive au sens que la psychanalyse a donné à l'image tabou : un lieu longtemps difficile à regarder pour le socio-anthropologue des sociétés occidentales dites « modernes ». Abstract This article ventures to demonstrate that the beliefs in ghosts and the debates around their existence went along with the birth of anthropology, before the latter came to be recognised as a discipline in the 16th cent. More specifically, more remains to be done on the "spectral functionalities", and namely the spectre's influence on the anthropological discourses. Ghost quickly turns out to be a very effective operator. It could be used as a demarcation line, between the Pagan and the Christian, the Protestant and the Catholic, the Civilised to the Barbarian, the literate and the vulgar, the sociologist, the anthropologist and the folklorist. The encounter between the ghost and the anthropologist could be seen as a primal scene in so far as it pointed out to the likely origin of the discipline of anthropology. But furthermore, in the 19th cent, when anthropology became an institutionalised discipline, it lends itself to be defined as a form "primitive" religion. In its psychoanalytical understanding, the primal scene also refers to an image of the taboo: a place which is hard to contemplate for the socio-anthropologist of the so called "modern" Western societies.

Nell’opera di ricerca e divulgazione di Paolo Mantegazza un termine ricorrente, anche con valore immateriale, è fisiologia. Sin dalla sua tesi (1854) dedicata alla Fisiologia del piacere vi sono molti tentativi di costruzione di un sistema ideale nel quale i sentimenti espressi dal funzionamento spirituale del corpo siano normati, o almeno ricondotti a sistemi più ampi di ambito meccanicistico. Mantegazza, parlamentare dal 1865 al 1876, non si occupa espressamente di una fisiologia della politica, tuttavia è possibile rintracciare nei suoi scritti e interventi parlamentari, tentativi di ricostruzione del sistema politico come momento fisiologico, dove le riflessioni astratte dell’aula parlamentare si mutano in azioni concrete in ambito
sociale.

Despite its intangible meaning, a recurring term in Paolo Mantegazza’s research and popular work is physiology. Since his 1854 thesis on the Fisiologia del piacere,
there have been many attempts to construct an ideal system in which the feelings expressed by the spiritual functioning of the body are regulated, or at least traced
back to broader systems in the mechanistic field. Mantegazza, a parliamentarian from 1865 to 1876, does not expressly deal with a physiology of politics, however, in his parliamentary writings and speeches, it is possible to identify attempts to reconstruct the political system as a physiological moment, where the abstract reflections of the parliamentary hall become concrete actions in the social sphere.

Paolo Mantegazza è il padre dell’antropologia moderna, fondatore del primo museo di antropologia in Europa (Firenze) e pioniere negli studi sull’igiene, sulla fisiologia e sull’uso delle droghe. Leggendo le pagine di Mantegazza, si scopre l’estrema modernità del suo pensiero politico e sociale, oltre alla sua vocazione di divulgatore culturale e della scienza (cosa che lo portò a scontrarsi duramente con il Sant’Uffizio). Il volume propone una serie di saggi di specialisti di Mantegazza e storici, che hanno così voluto realizzare un quadro storico, politico e letterario attorno alla figura del grande pensatore. La prima parte è dedicata a Mantegazza antropologo e viaggiatore (in Sudamerica e nel Nord dell’Europa) e alla sua attività scientifica e letteraria, con gli studi sulle sostanze stupefacenti e il romanzo utopistico L’Anno 3000 (il cui intreccio, sotto certi aspetti, non è poi così lontano dalla realtà odierna). La seconda parte propone una riflessione su Mantegazza politico e sulla sua relazione con la Sardegna, avendo fatto parte della Commissione parlamentare d’inchiesta del 1869 (insieme a Quintino Sella) con lo scopo di analizzare e studiare la realtà sarda. Paolo Mantegazza, poliedrico, eclettico, moderno ed estremamente provocatore: gli studiosi qui riuniti sono riusciti a tracciarne un profilo ben definito e molto ricco.

In the framework of contemporary ecocritical and posthumanist theories, this comparative analysis of works by Paolo Mantegazza, Ouida, and Vernon Lee focuses on the conflictual relationship of proximity and differentiation at stake in the human-animal distinction in a post-Darwinian context dominated by the rise of experimental sciences. A discussion of vivisection and animal taming prompted by anthropocentric works as Mantegazza's _Fisiologia del dolore_ and _Upilio Faimali_ in tension with pro-animal essays by Ouida and Vernon Lee shows how the animal, caught between pure inert materiality and idealization, emerges as an intrinsic lack that the human fills with contending rational, utilitarian, moral, and affective motivations.

Luca Curti nel suo studio "Svevo e Schopenhauer" (1992) fa risalire al 1884 la scoperta del filosofo tedesco da parte del giovane Svevo; solo di recente negli studi sveviani, grazie all’edizione in inglese del Diario di Elio, a cura di Carmine di Biase (2013), è emerso che in quell’anno Svevo scriveva anche una prima versione della commedia intitolata "Le teorie del conte Alberto". A partire da tali coordinate  si dimostrerà la presenza in questa commedia giovanile di specifici riferimenti alla "Metafisica dell'amore sessuale" di Schopenhauer ("Supplementi", IV § 44), questi riferimenti appaiono oltre lo sfondo delle altre teorie rappresentate in questa commedia: quella dell'ereditarietà di Darwin ("L'origine dell'uomo", 1871), e quelle fisiologiche, che si ricondurranno in particolare a Paolo Mantegazza ("Fisiologia dell'amore", 1873). Il medico antropologo Mantegazza è citato direttamente da Svevo nell’articolo "Il fumo" del 1890; è poi noto che Elio leggeva proprio nel febbraio del 1884 un romanzo di Mantegazza dal titolo "Un giorno a Madera. Una pagina dell'igiene d'amore" (1868).

La sepoltura a Firenze dei resti di Ugo Foscolo nel 1871, in una cerimonia anche politica, offre a Paolo Mantegazza, medico e antropologo, la possibilità di esaminarne il cadavere e stendere una memoria sul cranio del poeta, dove tra craniologia classica e una nuova lettura psicologica tenta di entrare nelle idee dello scrittore. Gli fa da ideale assistente Pellegrino Artusi, che diverrà noto nel 1891 per un originale ricettario, guidato dal positivismo e dalle nuove fisiologie professate da Mantegazza.

The burial of the remains of Ugo Foscolo in Florence in 1871, in a ceremony that was also political, provided Paolo Mantegazza, a doctor and anthropologist, the possibility of examining the corpse and writing an essay on the skull of the poet, where, using classic craniology and a new psychological interpretation, he attempted to get into the thinking of the writer. Pellegrino Artusi, who became known in 1891 for an original cookbook, and who was guided by the positivism and the new physiology professed by Mantegazza, was an ideal assistant.

The study describes the building of anthropology and the disciplines connected to it during the first years of the Italian state. The schools of thinking inspired by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and those of Darwinian inspiration are compared, and the text explains how Italian scientists discovered modern ethnography and folklore studies. The study focuses on several prominent personalities
of what is now defined in Italy as demo-ethno-anthropology, such as Paolo Mantegazza, Giustiniano Nicolucci, Giuseppe Pitrè, Cesare Lombroso and Angelo De Gubernatis. Less memorable figures are also mentioned in detail as well as their contribution to
Italian and European ethnology. The study analyses strengths and weaknesses of Italian ethnology, as well as their development
during the 19th century. Emphasis is placed on the perception of the substantial cultural distance between northern and southern Italy.These lands, after their annexation to the Italian Kingdom, became a field of research for ethnographers and anthropologists,
and a place to experience the new racist theories that were at that time formed within the positivist science, too.

The Anthropology and Ethnology section of the Natural History Museum of Florence conserves a collection of South American ethnological objects made by Guido Boggiani. There are numerous studies on Boggiani as a traveler and ethnographer, but Boggiani the artist has not received equal attention. The shift of Boggiani from landscape artist to ethnographer is usually described as a radical change. However, it was a transition with temporal continuity. The transition is illustrated by an up to now ignored relationship between Boggiani and Paolo Mantegazza, an important scientist of the time, recognized internationally for his contributions to anthropology and ethnology. The writings of Mantegazza follow and comment on the professional and personal journey of Boggiani. A letter of Boggiani dated May 1896 and addressed to Mantegazza offers rare insights to reconstruct this process. The relationship between the two individuals was initially confrontational and allows us to understand better the link between art and ethnography. In the letter Boggiani replies to a severely critical review that the famous professor of anthropology and senator had recently published of his book, Viaggi di un artista nell’America Meridionale: i Caduvèi. An analysis of the correspondence helps clarify the difference between their two positions and sheds light on their differences not only on ethnography and field work but also on art.

Il Museo di Storia Naturale di Firenze ospita, nella sezione di Antropologia ed Etnologia, una collezione di oggetti raccolti in Sud America da Guido Boggiani. Esistono non pochi testi che indagano sul suo ruolo come viaggiatore ed etnografo: l’artista non ha invece ricevuto pari attenzione. Il passaggio di Boggiani, affermato paesaggista, all’etnografia è sovente descritto nei termini della “svolta” e della mutazione dagli storici: non sono adeguatamente considerate le continuità del percorso. Un aspetto interessante e finora ignorato della biografia di Boggiani è la relazione che questi intrattenne con Paolo Mantegazza, all’epoca riconosciuto come importante scienziato a livello internazionale, con un ruolo di indiscusso rilievo in campo antropologico e etnologico. Numerosi scritti di Mantegazza seguono e commentano il percorso professionale e umano di Boggiani. Il ritrovamento di una lettera autografa di Boggiani indirizzata a Mantegazza e datata maggio 1896 offre ora spunti preziosi per la ricostruzione delle burrascose fasi iniziali del rapporto e la particolare urgenza che acquista, al tempo, il confronto tra arte e etnografia. Nel manoscritto che pubblichiamo, Boggiani replica ad una non tenera recensione riservata dall’illustre studioso di antropologia e senatore del regno al suo libro Viaggi di un artista nell’America Meridionale: i Caduvèi. L’analisi della corrispondenza contribuisce a chiarire le differenze tra le due posizioni, a illuminare prospettive differenti tanto sull’etnografia quanto sulla prossimità o distanza tra ricerca sul campo e arte.

This article analyzes the depiction of the impossible in Paolo Mantegazza's L'anno 3000 (1897). Starting from the literary theory of possible worlds, it will be shown that the depiction of the imposs i-ble in Mantegazza's novel is associated with specific technologies that implicate different types of perception. The three forms of perception developed in the novel (transparent, panoptic, and psycho-scopic) move from possible to highly impossible depictions regarding the scientific culture

Based on its relationship to comic books, this article proposes an iconographic study of the public figure of Federico Fellini in terms of the Hermes archetype. With the aim of explaining how Fellini’s image has been interpreted from different visual perspectives, I consider two basic questions: what relationship does Fellini have to the images of himself and of Italian culture? And why have images in Fellini’s films and his own public image been the object of constant reinterpretations in film, advertising and on social networks? Focusing on the rereading of Fellini’s image in the comics of Milo Manara, this article explores a phenomenon that distinguishes Fellini’s filmmaking: his role as a circulator of images of classical and popular culture out of the past and into the future. The figure of Hermes, the god of mediation, constitutes the archetype through which we can understand this central role of Fellini.

Im Zeichen der Utopie kommunizieren Literatur und Architektur schon seit der Renaissance. Deshalb ist es auch wenig überraschend, dass die moderne Baukunst maßgeblichen Einfluss auf die utopischen Romane des 19. Jahrhunderts hat. Allen voran das Transparenzgebot der damals zukunftsweisenden architektonischen Strömungen erfährt zunächst in utopischen und in weiterer Folge verstärkt noch in dystopischen Texten breite Resonanz; vielmehr lässt sich aber behaupten, dass innerhalb der utopischen Literatur die Darstellung  transparenter und panoptischer Raumstrukturen klar poetologische Funktionen erfüllt.
So veröffentlicht auch Paolo Mantegazza 1897 seine Utopie mit dem Titel L’anno 3000 - Sogno. Darin beschäftigt sich der Erzähler der fiktiven Reiseaufzeichnung unter anderem auch eingehend mit dem Panoptikum der Hauptstadt Andropolis. Das Panoptikum nimmt als immer wiederkehrendes Symbol positionsunabhängiger, komplett einsehbarer Räume einen breiten Platz in der utopischen Literatur und auch in diesem Roman ein. Die Referenz auf das hundert Jahre zuvor entwickelte Modell Benthams zum perfekten Gefängnis (1791) ist dabei evident.
Mantegazzas Panoptikum stellt aber nicht wie bei Bentham eine ideale Überwachungsapparatur im foucaultschen Sinn dar; ihm kommt hingegen die Funktion eines monumentalen staatlichen Kino-Theaters zu, das die Aufgabe hat, seine Bürger zur Schönheit zu erziehen. Dessen Darstellung verbindet sich dabei – neben aller detailver-liebtheit des Erzählers in die Darstellung der Gebäudestrukturen – intensiv mit den Diskursen zur Mensch-Maschine-Interaktion der Jahrhundertwende: So werden die Besucher des Panoptikums mit elektrischen Schläuchen verbunden, durch welche die Zuschauer die Intensität ihrer eigenen Emotionen in Bezug auf das virtuelle Spektakel steuern können. 
Natürlich findet in diesen Formen utopischer écriture nicht nur eine Reflexion zeitge-nössischer Architektur statt, sondern auch eine Replik auf deren Theorien. Dieser Vortrag geht deshalb davon aus, dass Transparenztheoreme moderner Architektur Anweisungen auch für eine textwissenschaftlich ausgerichtete Lektüre utopischer Romane liefern können. Die architektonische Interpretation von Gebäudetexturen kann dabei den literarischen Interpretationen von Gebäudedarstellungen im Text hilfreiche Impulse geben. In einer kulturwissenschaftlich ausgerichteten Zusammenschau sollen so die Darstellungen literarischer Durchsichtigkeiten vor dem Hintergrund der Thesen Le Corbusiers um die Jahrhundertwende sowie Colin Rowes 1955 verfassten Text Transperency gelesen werden.

The study offers a description of the difficulty of describing the boundaries between various study disciplines such as ethnology, folklore, and ethnography in the context of pre­ and post­unitary Italy. In a specific paragraph are presented the oldest collections
of fairy tales, collected by Giovanni Francesco Straparola (1480? –1557), Giambattista Basile (1566–1632), and Pompeo Sarnelli (1649–1724) and the first romantic attempts to comment on oral lore. Other paragraphs are devoted to the Italian collectors of folk tales, with particular attention on Niccolò Tommaseo (1802–1874), Vittorio Imbriani (1840–1886), and Costantino Nigra (1828–1907), and to the theorists of folklore studies Ermolao Rubieri (1818–1879) and Alessandro d’Ancona (1835–1914). The study describes where folklore studies in Italy met with ethnographic studies and where and when they moved away from themselves.

Il FAI Sardegna prosegue  il percorso di “Alla ricerca della storia perduta” offrendo ad iscritti, volontari, appassionati di romanzo storico e di storia l’ampio ventaglio dei paesaggi che costruiscono la Sardegna.
Stavolta l’azione di pedagogia sociale, obiettivo primo del FAI, vede come focus l’opera di uno storico sardo che insegna all'Università di Roma Tre. Si tratta di Carlo Felice Casula che ha  studiato un personaggio di grande rilevanza nella lettura della questione sarda: è Paolo Mantegazza, protagonista di "L’isola bella e infelice. Il libro Profili e Paesaggi della Sardegna e il diario inedito di Paolo Mantegazza", edito da Carlo Delfino.
Casula ha operato uno scavo approfondito negli archivi e nell'opera letteraria di Mantegazza, compreso in un inedito diario, in cui il parlamentare racconta la Sardegna scoperta nel 1869 nel viaggio della Commissione d’inchiesta parlamentare sulla Sardegna, la prima di tante tuttora invocate come panacea di ogni problema. Interlocutori di Mantegazza furono due giganti della Sardegna ottocentesca, Giovanni Spano e  Giorgio Asproni, che della Sardegna avevano una visione non sempre collimante con quella del parlamentare o di Quintino Sella che fece parte di quella Commissione.
Il percorso che il FAI Sardegna sta compiendo sottolinea l’importanza di recuperare la storia e le storie perdute per poter leggere consapevolmente la densità dell’attuale paesaggio sardo e dei suoi eventi raccontati nei libri presentati. Quello di Casula, prezioso ed accurato come pochi, oltrepassa molti stigmi in cui parte della storiografia ha situato la Sardegna specie dall'Ottocento.
"L’isola bella e infelice. Il libro Profili e Paesaggi della Sardegna e il diario inedito di Paolo Mantegazza" è stato presentato venerdì 22 aprile 2016 dalle 16:00 alla Sala convegni della Fondazione di Sardegna a Cagliari, in Via San Salvatore da Horta. Insieme all'autore hanno partecipato tra gli altri Maria Antonietta Mongiu, Graziano Milia, Nicolò Migheli, Franco Masala, Margherita Sulas,  Marinella Cocco Ortu, Giampaolo Atzei, Giulia Medas, Enrico Trogu  e Giuseppe Seche.

Séminaire "esthétique scientifique", Centre Victor Basch, Paris. (21.01.2015)


Il seminario indagherà concetti di espressione e mimica nel XIX secolo nel campo delle scienze naturali. In particolare, il concetto di Pathosformel formulato da Aby Warburg (1866-1929) sarà analizzato a partire da una ricerca d’archivio svolta al Warburg Institute di Londra ove, tra i documenti, è emerso l’interesse di Warburg per gli studi svolti da Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910). Medico e antropologo evoluzionista, Mantegazza approfondì e continuò lo studio sull’espressione iniziato da Charles Darwin nell’opera L’espressione delle emozioni nell’uomo e negli animali (The expression of the emotions in man and animals, 1872).Si cercherà di comprendere in che modo la mimica possa svolgere al contempo una funzione fisica ed espressiva: le forme della gestualità riflettono una disposizione primitiva del rapporto tra uomo e mondo e rappresentano lo stadio più profondo della comunicazione. Si vedrà dunque in che modo il corpo possa essere concepito come metafora di questo legame originario. 


Cette communication vise à thématiser les concepts d’expression et de mimique tels qu’ils apparaissent au XIX siècle dans le domaine des sciences naturelles. Le concept de Pathosformel formulé par Aby Warburg (1866-1929) sera analysé à partir de documents d’archive découverts à la Bibliothèque de l’Institut Warburg (Londres), qui mettent en évidence le rapport entre la pensée d’Aby Warburg et celle de Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910), médecin et anthropologue évolutionniste, dont l’œuvre prolonge le travail sur l’expression commencé par Charles Darwin dans L’Expression des émotions chez l’homme et les animaux (The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, 1872). Il s’agit de comprendre en quel sens la mimique remplit une fonction à la fois physique et expressive: les formes de la gestualité reflètent une disposition primitive du rapport entre l’homme et le monde et représentent la couche la plus profonde de la communication; on verra comment le corps peut être conçu comme métaphore de ce lien originaire.
