Rejection Sensitivity

As texting continues to serve as an increasingly common method of communication among emerging adults, increases in rates of sexting, or sending sexually explicit messages, pictures, or videos, have also been observed. While consensual sexting can facilitate intimacy in relationships, when used as a tool to victimize others, it has been shown to yield a range of negative outcomes-from embarrassment to severe depression and suicide. This chapter aims to review the existing literature on emerging adults' engagement in and evaluations of sexting, while also considering the risks associated with sexting victimization. The role that individual characteristics, such as attachment style and rejection sensitivity, play in the relationship between experiences with and evaluations of using sexting as a tool for victimization will also be explored. !

Social relationships are a big part of human life and threats to such relationships have vast implications. This study tested the contention of social monitoring system (SMS) suggesting that socially rejected individuals experience higher need to belong. A 2 (men/women) by 2 (acceptance/rejection) experimental design was conducted to explore gender’s role in the need to belong after a rejection experience. Participants (N = 68) wrote rejection or acceptance stories and responded to a Need to Belong Scale. Two-Way ANOVA results showed that felt rejection elicited heightened need to belong especially among women, F(3, 64) = 5.78, p = .019, partial eta = .083. This provides evidence in the SMS literature pointing to the role of gender in the need to belong of rejected individuals. Implications and limitations of the study were further discussed.

The nature of the current academic job market engages many PhD holders in continuous search for employment. The competitive job market created by this causes recruitment committees to review an overwhelming number of materials submitted by each candidate. It is often the case that applicants are not alerted if their applications are not successful, which likely creates frustration. Although receiving a rejection letter may be considered an act of kindness, rejection can be a face-threatening act for both the addressor and the addressee. Therefore, special care needs to be given to writing an employment rejection letter. Despite this, the advanced electronic communication often utilized when communicating to applicants seems to create formidable challenges. With this in mind, this research aimed to identify how the rejection speech act is performed in emails addressed to PhD holders, and what professors thought about different types of rejection emails. Data for the former collected using fifty-eight authentic employment rejection emails and data for the latter were collected using a survey comprised of three emails, to which twenty professors responded. Results revealed that a variety of moves were employed in the emails. These included " subject-line " , " salutation " , " thank-you note " , " notification of process completion " , " compliment " , " justification " , " rejection " , " remedy " , " appreciation and/or thank-you note " , " good luck wish " , " valediction " , and " addressor " s name and/or affiliation ". Although these moves did not seem to have a fixed order, an overall structure was detected. On the other hand, data on professors " opinions about different rejection emails showed that the content and how rejection is expressed impacted their perception of the self and the institution. Results are discussed and recommendations are offered to mitigate the effects of employment rejection emails which are highly face-threatening.

The study was conducted to determine the level of Rejection Sensitivity and Self-Acceptance of Selected Adolescents of  Bacoor, Cavite. The study focused on reducing the level of Rejection Sensitivity and enhancing the level of Self-Acceptance utilizing Learn, Enhance, Achieve Program (LEAP)  which has been made by the researchers and has been validated by three experts.
The participants of the study was composed of nineteen (19) randomly selected adolescents of selected from Bacoor, Cavite. Pre-test and post-test was supported by True experimental research design method and the Learn Enhance Achieve Program (LEAP) was improved by 6 modules developed by the researchers to calibrate the effect of high self-acceptance and to lower the rejection sensitivity level of the participants in the study. To ensure the data gathered, the researchers used statistical tools such as: Frequency Distribution, Aritmetic mean, Kolmogorov- Smirnov test, Dependent t-test and Independent sample t-test, Welch’s T-test, and Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).
There is no significant difference in the mean scores of the two groups. The control and experimental group do not differ in initial rejection sensitivity levels however the mean score obtained from experimental group (M = 84.00) is statistically higher  than the mean score obtained from the control group (M = 70.00) in terms of self-acceptance thus, null hypothesis is rejected.
There is no significant difference between the  pre-test and post-test mean scores of the participants from control and experimental group in terms of rejection sensitivity and self acceptance.
There is a significant difference in the mean scores of the two groups. The rejection sensitivity post-test mean score obtained from experimental group (M = 7.83) is statistically less than the rejection sensitivity post test mean score obtained from the control group (M = 10.80). From these results it can be deduced that the program has a positive effect on the level of rejection sensitivity of the participants. In terms of self-acceptance,  after controlling for the pre-test score, there is a highly significant difference in the self-acceptance post-test mean score between the experimental and control groups.
To determine the significant differences of the variances, analysis of variance and Welch F-test were used. Among the hypotheses, hypothesis one and four were rejected while hypotheses two and three  were accepted.

Spectator violence is an issue that affects many football matches in Sweden and other countries. Different models have tried to explain why individuals participate in sports fandom and associated behaviors. However, often these models ignore social and individual factors that may impact if and why individuals participate in spectator violence. Outgroup violence can be motivated by pro-social concerns for ingroup acceptance. We argue that outgroup violence among football supporters may be used as a marker of ingroup loyalty and attachment. A survey of 350 male Swedish football supporters was conducted to assess their levels of need to belong, rejection sensitivity, and willingness to engage in violence. A hierarchal regression analysis showed a significant interaction, such that individuals with a high need to belong and who are sensitive to rejection are more willing to engage in violence against an opposing team. The results provide important insights into the social dynamics of intergroup violence and spectator violence. We extend upon existing theory by adding this social personality perspective to show the importance of individual differences in belongingness needs as a driver for participation in spectator violence.

People use many cues to infer the likelihood of acceptance or rejection in intergroup interactions. Nearly all prior research has focused on personal cues directly given off by the potential interaction partner (e.g., eye contact and smiling). However, we argue that in the context of intergroup interactions, individuals may be especially sensitive to broader social cues, such as an interaction partner's social network. Across three experiments we explored differences in White participants' evaluations of a smiling Black man presented with a Black or White friend. When this Black man was featured with a Black friend, White participants reported greater rejection concerns and a greater inclination to reject this Black man compared to when he was featured with a White friend (Experiments 1–3) or featured alone (Experiment 2). Furthermore, when participants received a simple intervention designed to buffer against social rejection, the race of the Black man's friend no longer influenced participants' interests in befriending the Black man (Experiment 3). This research demonstrates the power of friendships in interracial interactions and provides evidence for a simple intervention to reduce the weight of rejection concerns in interracial interactions.

Both avoidant and borderline personality disorder (APD and BPD) are theoretically associated with temperamental vulnerabilities, adverse attachment experiences, and negative (pessimistic or catastrophic) reactions to the threat of perceived rejection; however, more work is needed to differentiate how these processes account for the etiology and maintenance of both disorders. In this study, 156 adults completed questionnaires measuring APD and BPD features, temperament (sensory processing sensitivity), mood, and attachment experiences. A vignette task was devised to examine pessimistic cognitive-affective reactions in situations signaling potential rejection. Both APD and BPD were associated with temperamental sensitivity, but BPD was uniquely linked with a subscale measuring sensitivity to mental and emotive stimuli, whereas APD was uniquely linked with a subscale measuring the control and avoidance of aversive stimulation. Compared to APD, BPD was more strongly linked with negative moods (anxiety, anger, sadness) and insecure attachment to parents, whereas APD was more strongly linked (than BPD) to pessimistic cognitive-affective responses to rejection-related situations.

It is widely acknowledged that parental influence is crucial for the overall development of a child. The key to shaping a child’s personality and behavior is understanding the individual differences in the relationship between a child and his or her parents. The present study was conducted on young adults belonging to military and civilian families between the ages 17-23. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the three variables, i.e. Parental Acceptance- Rejection (PAR), Rejection sensitivity and Empathy and to analyze the effect of the dimensions of Parental Acceptance-Rejection in the levels of Rejection sensitivity and Empathy respectively among the sample of young adults belonging to military and civilian families. The difference between the dimensions of PAR in father and mother was also studied along with the difference in the levels of the dimensions of Parental Acceptance- Rejection (PAR), Rejection sensitivity and Empathy.  The results of the present study showed a correlation between the three variables i.e. the dimensions of Parental Acceptance-Rejection (PAR), Rejection sensitivity and Empathy. It also showed a significant difference among the young adults belonging to military and civilian families in the levels of the dimensions of Parental Acceptance-Rejection, Rejection sensitivity and Empathy.

Rejection sensitivity and loneliness are some of the psychological factors that negatively affect
people’s lives. The literature has revealed evidence that rejection sensitivity may be associated with
loneliness. The purpose of this study was to examine the possible mediating roles of vulnerable
narcissism, grandiose narcissism, and self-esteem in the relationship between rejection sensitivity
and loneliness. The research sample consisted of 296 [231 (78%) women, 63 (21.3%) men] university students in İstanbul, whose ages are between 18 and 28 years. Socio-demographic Information
Form, Rejection Sensitivity Questionnaire, Pathological Narcissism Inventory, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and UCLA Loneliness Scale were used for the data collection. The findings of the
analyses revealed that vulnerable narcissism, grandiose narcissism, and self-esteem significantly
predict loneliness. When the serial mediation models were tested, it was found that grandiose narcissism and self-esteem in the first model, and vulnerable narcissism, and self-esteem in the second
model had mediating roles respectively in the relationship between rejection sensitivity and loneliness. Research findings are discussed in the light of the literature, and the limitations of the study
and its contributions to clinical practice and suggestions for future research are presented.

This research was conducted to understand the attitudes of female preschool teachers' towards male preschool teachers while hiring job. In the research there were two CVs which have all the same features except their genders. These CVs were given to female preschool teachers to assess them as hiring job. These questions were; Do you think this teacher would be a good teacher? Would you hire this person as a preschool teacher? Would you prefer this teacher as a teacher of your child? Would you think that children prefer this teacher as their preschool teacher? Do you think this person is happy as a preschool teacher?.Female preschool teacher ranked these questions 1 to 10 while evaluating. Participants of the research consisted of six participants from private schools and 24 participants were from government schools. By considering CVs, all female preschool teachers ranked five questions that were asked them about hiring job of that preschool teacher. According to independent sample t-test that there was a significant difference between attitudes towards male preschool teachers while hiring job. The result showed that female preschool teachers have negative attitudes towards male preschool teachers. In addition to these, working with a male preschool teacher before did not have a significant difference between attitudes of female preschool teachers.

This study investigated student teachers’ demographic variables and their internet addiction as possible predictors of their loneliness, given that the youth are increasingly becoming lonely resulting in mental health problems. The sample size comprised 600 (mean age = 19.69, SD = 3.17) student teachers. Findings showed that male undergraduate students had a non-significant higher mean score in loneliness than their female counterparts; while significant differences occurred as a result of gender in students’ internet addiction. Students whose primary residence was in the urban area had a non-significant higher mean score in loneliness than students from rural areas; while primary residence accounted for significant differences in mean scores in internet addiction. Regression analysis revealed that age, gender, primary place of residence, number of social media sites used and internet addiction jointly contributed 10.3% to explain the variances in response and the corresponding F (5, 567) = 13.051, was statistically significant (p<.05). However, only internet addiction showed a significant individual contribution in accounting for the variances in student teachers’ loneliness. Discussion was based on the findings, leading to the conclusion that factors associated with loneliness may be linked to those that impede the respondents’ interpersonal relationships. This study has implications for the university education given that ensuring student teachers’ good mental health will lead to the training of students who can self-regulate their emotions and interact effectively with others.

This study deals with the perceived acceptance-rejection of male and female adolescents at home and at school and their association with the psychological states experienced by them. A sample of 350 female and 220 male 10 th grade students filled out two questionnaires: Dwairy's Rejection Scale, measuring acceptance-rejection by fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, male teachers, female teachers, male classmates and female classmates, and the Psychological State Scale, measuring anxiety, depression, psychosomatic symptoms and conduct disorders. The results show that all perceived acceptance-rejection circuits are associated with and merged in three major factors of rejection: family, teachers, and classmates. All the factors were associated with psychological states experienced by the adolescents with a cross-gender effect. Experienced psychological states of male adolescents were associated with perceived acceptance-rejection circuits at home and at school, in particular when related to female figures, while psychological states of female adolescents were associated with male and female figures at home. The results highlight the need for a systemic approach in research.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the associations between preferences about which strategy (e.g. direct, indirect or pasive
strategies) should be used by women and men in order to initiate relationship, attitudes toward stereotypes related to romantic
relationships, rejection sensitivity and relationship anxiety. It is also aimed to evaluate to what extent rejection sensitivity and
relationship anxiety determine the stereotypical attitudes concerning men’s initiation in relationships. The sample of the study
included 373 participants (228 women - 145 men) between the ages of 18 - 37 (X = 22.08, SD = 2.18). The questionaire that
consisted of demografic information form, Relationship Fear/Anxiety Subscale of Multidimensional Relationship Scale,
Attitudes Toward Stereotypes Related to Romantic Relationships Scale and Rejection Sensitivity Scale were administered to
the participants in person as printed forms or by internet as online forms. Findings showed that both female and male
participants mostly supported indirect strategy for female initiators, and direct strategy for male ones. Female participants’
support for direct strategy was found to be greater than male participants’ support for direct strategy where the initiator was
male (p < .05). Conversely males’ support for direct strategy was greater than female participants’ support for direct strategy
where the initiator was female (p < .05). Relationship anxiety, attitudes toward stereotypes related to romantic relationships
and rejection sensitivity were found to be differed in the basis of different strategy preferences for female and male initiators.
Female participants who supported indirect strategy for female initiators were more in favor of stereotypes concerning men’s
initiation and men’s dominance in relationships than female participants who supported direct strategy for female initiators (p <
.01). These participants were also found to have more rejection sensitivity than the other female participants group by a
marginal significance level (p = .051). Male participants who supported direct strategy for female initiators were found to have more relationship anxiety than male participants who supported indirect strategy for female initiators (p < .01). Male
participants who supported direct strategy for male initiators were observed as more supportive of stereotypes concerning
men’s dominance in relationships (p < .01). In women sample, supporting stereotypes concerning men’s initiation was
explained by the number of individual’s own initiations and rejection sensitivity. Findings of the research were discussed within the framework of gender roles, stereotypes related to romantic relationships and rejection sensitivity theory.

This study was conducted to find out the effects of verbal and written rejection on obedience. The researchers hypothesized that there is a significant difference on subjects; obedience when exposed to different forms of rejection. In order to test the hypothesis, an experimental study was conducted. Sixty participants were gathered for the study and were randomly assigned equally in the treatment groups and the control group. They were asked by the researchers to perform 3 sets of tasks which consisted of 2 activities each. Upon the completion of the first activity of each set of tasks, the researchers expressed their rejection on every individual subject’s task. Afterwards, the subjects were asked to accomplish the second task for each set for additional points. The subjects who agreed to proceed with the second tasks were given additional points and were considered obedient while those who did not were not given points. The results of the experiment showed that those subjects who were exposed to Verbal Rejection where more disobedient than those exposed to written rejection. With these findings, the researchers accepted their hypothesis. The researchers concluded that rejection affects the obedience of an individual especially when it is expressed verbally. However, due to the proximity between the scores of obedience between the two treatments, the researchers also considered the conclusion that written rejection can also affect obedience. The researchers recommend the consideration of the rejection sensitivity according to the demographic profile of each subject in future researches. A further study on the possible effects of written and other possible forms of rejection is also recommended.

Objective: Prosocial behavior is one of the structures that has been seriously considered in social psychology and can be influenced by various factors. Hence, the purpose of this study was develop a structural model to explain prosocial behaviors based on belonging motivation and sensitivity to rejection mediated by social trust. The research method was correlational and structural equation modeling. The statistical population of the study was all students of Bu Ali Sina University in the academic year 1399-1400, that 400 people was selected by random cluster sampling. The instruments used in this study was include scales of Caprara et al. (2005) prosocial behavior, Saffarinia & Sharif (2010) social trust, affiliation motivation of Cuadrado et al. (2016) and Danny and Foldman (1996) rejection sensitivity. The results showed that the conceptual model developed had a good fit with the data. The results of structural relationships of the model showed that affiliation motivation and rejection sensitivity have a direct and significant effect on social trust (p <0.01) and prosocial behavior (p <0.01). Also, social trust had a direct and significant effect on prosocial behavior (p <0.01). The results of indirect relationships showed that affiliation motivation and rejection sensitivity mediated by social trust have a significant effect on prosocial behavior (p <0.01). Based on the results, the affiliation motivation and the sensitivity to rejection affect social trust and prosocial behaviors. Therefore, by developing programs to educate and increase affiliation motivation and reduce sensitivity to rejection in individuals, we can expect improvement in their prosocial behaviors.

Ironically, the narcissistically crippled person who seeks and craves to be found beautiful and adored is also (unconsciously) rejecting those who who would offer love. (For example, Narcissus rejecting Echo.)
Some detailed discussion and explication of the Aesthetic conflict is offered to help account for such a tragic paradox and frustration in the "love-life" of the narcissistic personality.

Rejection sensitivity - the tendency to expect, perceive, and overreact to rejection by others - is linked with individuals&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; expectations that their romantic partners&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; behaviors have negative intent, even if, perhaps, such behaviors could be considered neutral when observed by another. The aim of the present study was to test this proposition, derived from rejection sensitivity theory, using a Video-Recall Procedure with adolescent couples in the US (N = 386 adolescents, 50% girls). We examined whether adolescents who were more sensitive to rejection perceived their romantic partners&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; behaviors as more conflictual than when viewed by trained, third-party observers. Findings suggest that, at the micro-analytic level, higher rejection sensitivity is associated with adolescents&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39; heightened perception of their romantic partners as conflictual when compared to observers, who more often coded the same behaviors as neutral rather than conflictual. Implications for adolescent mental health and well-being are discussed.

Rejection is usually something that makes one move away from the un-comfortableness. It seems heart breaking to be rejected right?  Like when the feeling of rejection comes up, it is as if it is a personal attack on the character, that we aren’t good enough or what we are so proud of isn’t good enough, some variation of not good enough.  However, rejection also comes to serve as a great gift, if one allows it.  Nothing teaches quicker than a broken heart and the deepest teaching comes not from attempting to repair it, but allowing it to be broken.  And rejection can be a darn good heart breaker.
