Russian Literature in the 18th century

From two 1824 letters by Aleksandr Pushkin to Aleksandr Kaznacheev. The first is in response to an assignment to investigate the extermination of locusts that Pushkin refused to undertake; the second concerns his resignation from the Russian Foreign Ministry, where he worked for seven years. The letters are included in Pushkin: Documents Toward a Biography 1799–1829, published last year in Russia by Iskusstvo. Count Woronzof, the deputy authority of the province of Bessarabia, was Pushkin’s boss. Kaznacheev was the head of Woronzof’s chancellery. Pushkin later admitted to a friend that he lied about his aneurysm in order to gain his freedom.

«Petersburg-Panegyrik» bezeichnet die Tradition der epideiktischen Stadtdarstellung, die im 18. Jahrhundert einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Herausbildung der kulturellen Semantik der neuen Zarenresidenz leistete. Diese Tradition, welche die noch «rhetorikfreie» Stadt in ein textuelles Gewebe aus Petrinischen Ideologemen, Stadtmythemen und der Topik des rhetorischen Städtelobes einflocht, bildet das Fundament des literarischen Petersburg-Mythos. Die Untersuchung dieses bislang wenig beachteten Stadtdiskurses, der in der Petrinischen Epoche entstand und seinen «manieristischen» Endpunkt in der Dichtung Semen Bobrovs erfuhr, hebt insbesondere drei Aspekte hervor: das mythopoetische Substrat, die kulturelle Dimension (im Sinne der Konstruktion kultureller Identität) und die rhetorisch-textuelle Faktur. Damit geht sie im Ansatz über das kultur-semiotische Konzept des «Petersburger Textes» (V. Toporov) hinaus.

, Les Mille et Une Nuits ont aussi été victimes dans ce pays d’un formidable préjugé, qui se forme dès le XVIIIe siècle et aboutit au XIXe et surtout au XXe siècle à marginaliser cette œuvre jugée trop frivole et légère pour trouver sa place dans une littérature nationale, ambitieuse et, sous la période soviétique, prolétarienne. Pourtant, entre les traductions, manuscrites ou imprimées, les continuations et les imitations, c’est, en termes de quantité, l’un des plus importants ensembles de textes dans la littérature russe du XVIIIe siècle : un véritable océan d’histoires [2]

, mais dont le rôle dans la constitution et la consolidation de la littérature de l’époque est largement sous-estimé, notamment pour des raisons idéologiques. Dans le cadre de cet article, il s’agira donc de réévaluer cette progressive mise à l’écart des Mille et Une Nuits dans le canon littéraire, alors même que ce texte continuait de remporter un franc succès auprès des lecteurs, en revenant aux premières réactions et aux premières réécritures que l’ouvrage a suscitées durant le XVIIIe siècle. Cette mise en perspective contribuera à souligner que le débat sur la nocivité potentielle des contes exotiques et divertissants que contiennent les Nuits a été en réalité accentué de façon tardive par des critiques pétris de l’idée qu’une grande littérature est nécessairement une littérature didactique : cette conception est en effet fort éloignée de la pratique des auteurs du XVIIIe siècle, pour qui les Nuits constituent précisément un point d’équilibre entre les nécessités de l’éducation et le plaisir du conte.

Le rôle joué par Les Mille et Une Nuits dans la constitution de la littérature russe s’est ainsi trouvé largement minoré par cette relecture ultérieure, qui a dominé la critique sur la réception du texte en Russie et à l’étranger depuis le XIXe siècle [3]

Se sont ainsi imposées deux idées que nous souhaiterions ici amender : la première est que, en dépit du nombre considérable de textes qui s’y rapportent, Les Mille et Une Nuits ont en réalité eu un succès ponctuel sur le mode d’une vogue éphémère de fictions plaisantes, dont le caractère non sérieux interdisait toute prise durable sur la littérature de l’époque. La seconde idée, qui vient renforcer la première, est que la réception des Nuits s’est faite de manière segmentée et n’a donc pas pu constituer de modèle littéraire global, ni donner lieu à une lecture également partagée par toutes les classes sociales : le point de vue qui domine est que chaque type de lectorat et chaque groupe socio-culturel ont eu leur propre appropriation et leur propre mode de réécriture des Mille et Une Nuits. En particulier, le texte introduit en Europe par Galland intervient pour appuyer une distinction d’ordre culturel entre deux grandes postures littéraires, celle assumée par les écrivains dilettantes appartenant à la classe lettrée traditionnelle, notamment aristocratique, et celle investie par une nouvelle classe de littérateurs cherchant à accéder au statut de professionnels de la littérature.

В диссертации проводится комплексное исследование художественных, религиозных и фольклорных представлений о допетровской Руси, бытовавших в русской исторической памяти XVIII в. Автор выявляет комплекс событий и личностей допетровской Руси, память о которых была актуализирована в историческом сознании XVIII в., выстраивает иерархию наиболее востребованных исторических образов, отмечает особенности их интерпретаций и оценок в разных типах исторических нарративов. На основе источников личного происхождения и массовых исторических источников характеризуются особенности формирования повседневных исторических представлений разных слоёв населения Российской империи XVIII в. о допетровской Руси.

The paper is dedicated to a historiographical analysis of the Slavonic-Greek-Latin Primer by Fedor (Theodore) Polikarpov published at the Moscow Print Yard in 1701.The unique character of the publication lies in the fact that for the first time in the historyof the Moscow book-printing culture there was an attempt to introduce the basics of notonly one language but of three languages at the same time: Slavic, Greek and Latin. Animportant part of the study was to expose the sources of the Primer, and with this end inview, explored were not only earlier Primers but also the manuscript of the trilingual Primerwritten by Fedor Polikarpov. As of today, we discovered about 70 copies of the Primer invarious libraries. As a result of the study of these copies, a conclusion was drawn that bythe time of the release of the Primer, the learning of foreign languages had already graduallybeen entering into the lives of some part of society and a sufficiently trained reading publichad already been formed.

В диссертации анализируются динамические процессы, происходившие в повествовательной структуре жанра путешествия конца ХVIII – первой трети ХIХ веков, выявляются основные нарративные модели жанра в русской и западноевропейской беллетристике данного историко-литературного периода, определяются эволюционные изменения повествовательной структуры жанра путешествия в смене литературных эпох; выявляется взаимосвязь между жанровой моделью мира и спецификой ее нарративного структурирования

This article presents original and previously unpublished documents from the case of Van'ka Kain (1741-1748). Van'ka Kain was a notorious Moscow criminal who surrendered at the end of 1741, declaring his wish to help the police round up his former associates in crime. More than one hundred criminals (professional thieves, criminal hideouts’ keepers and fencers for stolen goods) were arrested by Kain and the soldiers in a few days’ time. Kain was rehabilitated in the spring of 1742, becoming an official informer and detective of the Sysknoi prikaz (Office of Criminal Investigation). In such capacity he assisted in the apprehension of his past confederates, professional thieves, until 1748. The materials of his case published in this article for the first time contain unique and comprehensive information on the Moscow underworld of the 18th century.

В рамках статьи рассматриваются пути сохранения исторической памяти о подчинении Новгорода Московскому государству в XVIII в. и их влияние на формирование картины русского прошлого в «Путешествии из Петербурга в Москву» А.Н. Радищева и повести «Марфа Посадница» Н.М. Карамзина.

The article reflects the ways of preservation of the historical memory about the accession of Novgorod to Moscow in the 18 th century and their influence on the formation of ideas about Russian history in "A Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow" by A. Radischev and "Marfa Posadnitsa" by N. Karamzin.

Статья посвящена сборнику прозы и поэзии «Распускающаяся роза» (1799), написанному А. П. Мурзиной и сегодня известному благодаря присутствующей в нем защите женского письма и критике гендерных стереотипов. Кроме этого, книга Мурзиной насыщена религиозным дидактизмом, артикулированным с помощью наполненного олицетворениями аллегорического языка. Нагляднейшим примером выражения этих тем и поэтики являются рассказы «Сновидение» и «Действие дружбы». В первом героиня узнает историю девушки, умершей после того, как ее матримониальные планы были разрушены из-за оклеветавшей ее сестры. В следующем затем сновидении героиня посещает ад и созерцает там аллегорическую фигуру мучимого грешника. Используемые в этом описании образы восходят к изображению Зависти у Овидия, тогда как дидактическое воображение ада может быть связано с христианской традицией, представленной в проповедях почитаемого Мурзиной греческого епископа Ильи Минятия. В «Действии дружбы» героиня случайно оказывается в женском монастыре, дружится с настоятельницей и в итоге решает переехать туда жить. Мурзина воображает закрытое женское сообщество, основанное на взаимной любви и моральном совершенствовании, и этот проект является чисто утопическим, учитывая тяжелые условия, в которых находились в России женские монастыри после реформы 1764 г. В обоих рассказах представлены символические разрешения противоречий существующего социального, морального и гендерного порядка.

The paper studies a collection of prose and poetry The Blooming Rose (1799) written by Aleksandra Murzina and known today for its advocation of women’s writing and critique of gender stereotypes. Apart from that, Murzina’s book is saturated with religious didacticism articulated with a help of allegorical language full of personifications. The clearest expression of these themes and poetics is found in two short stories, The Dream and The Friendship’s Effect. In the first one, the heroine gets acquainted with the story of a young girl’s death after her matrimonial prospects were ruined because her sister had calumniated her. A visionary dream follows in which the heroine visits hell and contemplates an allegorical figure of a sinner being tortured. The imagery used in this description is that of the Envy as depicted by Ovid, while the didactic imagination of hell could be linked to the Christian tradition exemplified in the sermons of a Greek preacher Ilias Miniatis greatly admired by Murzina. In The Friendship’s Effect the heroine accidentally finds herself in a convent, makes friends with the abbess and eventually decides to move there. Murzina imagines a closed female community based on mutual love and moral perfection, and this project is a purely utopian one given the harsh conditions of Russian convents after the monastic reform of 1764. Both short stories present symbolic solutions to the contradictions in the existing social, moral, and gender order.

Статья посвящена медитативному прозаическому этюду Н. М. Карамзина "Прогулка" (1789). Демонстрируется, что представленный в этом тексте рассказ об интенсивном субъективном религиозно-эстетическом опыте, который основывается на по-видимому спонтанных эмоциональных реакциях чувствительного человека, складывается из дискурсов, топосов, тропов и мотивов, которые Карамзин мог обнаружить в описательной поэзии Дж. Томсона и К. М. Виланда, эссе о воображении Дж. Аддисона и ранней книге И. Г. Гердера по библейской экзегезе.

Книга итальянского слависта Риккардо Николози посвящена русским панегирическим
текстам  XVIII  в.  –  «похвальным  словам»  и  одам,  прославляющим  Петербург  и  его
державного  основателя.  В  центре  внимания  исследователя  –  формирование  «мифа  о
Петербурге» в панегирике XVIII в. и его последующий «демонтаж», начало которого автор
усматривает в поэзии С. Боброва. История петербургского панегирика рассматривается в
контексте российской государственной идеологии и европейской литературной традиции
от античности до Нового времени. Это позволяет автору уточнить, дополнить и частично
пересмотреть выводы классических работ Н. П. Анциферова и В. Н. Топорова.

В статье установлен источник книги «Подражания древним», опубликованной в 1795 году в Санкт-Петербурге. Ее составителем и переводчиком был Николай Федорович Эмин (1767–1814), сын известного русского писателя и авантюриста турецкого происхождения Федора Александровича Эмина (1735–1770), который умер, когда его сыну было всего три года. Эмин-младший получил военное образование и не владел древними языками, поэтому для своего издания он воспользовался французской антологией Ж.-Ж. Мутонне де Клерфона (1740–1813), многократно переиздававшейся в XVIII веке. Из этой книги Эмин выбрал ряд стихотворений Сапфо, Анакреонта (точнее, эллинистических подражаний ему), Феокрита, Биона, Мосха, Горация и Катулла. Эмин также использовал биографические преамбулы к их стихам; эти вводные тексты были им существенно сокращены. В  предисловии к  «Подражаниям древним» Эмин развивает теорию «имитации», отрицая возможность точного поэтического перевода. Он также отстаивает необходимость рифм в «подражаниях» древнегреческой и латинской поэзии. Несмотря на эти декларации, Эмин в целом довольно точно следовал в  своих стихах французской прозе Мутонне де Клерфона. Лишь единожды, в  одиннадцатой идиллии Феокрита, писатель предпринял существенные изменения, пояснив в пространном примечании к ней, что его к этому побудило: уродливого циклопа Полифема Эмин заменил на галантного и привлекательного пастуха Меналка, заявив, что это больше подходит к «нынешнему веку». В остальных случаях отступления от античных претекстов объясняются не своеволием Эмина, но  теми изменениями, которые внес в свои переводы Мутонне де Клерфон. Именно он, к примеру, объединил два стихотворения Катулла (XCII и LXXXV) в одно, и как раз этому тексту следовал Эмин. В  знаменитое оплакивание воробушка Мутонне де Клерфон ввел обращение к чувствительным любовникам, которое находим и у Эмина.
The article establishes the source of Imitations of the Ancients, published in 1795 in Saint Petersburg. The translator and compiler of this book was Nikolai F. Emin (1767–1814), son of Fedor A. Emin (1735–1770), the famous Russian writer and adventurer of Turkish origin who died when his son was only three years old. Emin junior did not know ancient languages and therefore used a French anthology by Julien-Jacques Moutonnet de Clair- fons (1740–1813), which was printed many times in the 18 th century. For his book Emin choose poems by Sappho, Anacreon (to be precise, Anacreontic poetry), Theocritus, Bion, Moschus, Horace and Catullus. Emin also used the biographical preambles to their poems, which he shortened significantly. In the preface to his book, Emin expounded upon the the- ory of “imitation,” denying the possibility of precision in poetic translation. He also defend- ed the necessity of rhyme in “imitations” of ancient Greek and Latin poetry. Despite these declarations, Emin generally followed quite closely Moutonnet de Clairfons’ French prose. Only once did Emin make fundamental changes. This was in his “imitation” of Theocritus’ eleventh idyll. In this case, he explained his logic in an extensive footnote. Emin changed the ugly cyclops Polyphemes into the gallant and handsome shepherd Menalk, substanti- ating his decision with the declaration that such a hero better suited “our present age.” In other cases, deviations from ancient texts can be explained not by Emin’s arbitrariness, but by changes made by Moutonnet de Clairfons in the French translation. For example, it was he who combined two poems by Catullus (XCII и LXXXV), a decision that Emin followed. To the famous lament for a sparrow, Moutonnet de Clairfons added an appeal to “sensitive lovers” which is also found in Emin’s text.

Murav'ev as an Ancient Roman citizen: Towards the Study of Murav'ev's Worldview as Expressed in His Letters to His Father and His Sister.

The article examines M.N. Murav'ev's self-representation in his works. It demonstrates how Murav'ev's worldview was shaped by his constant desire to present himself as an honest man (honnête homme). His model of behaviour was influenced by the cultural developments of his epoch; it was oriented both towards the past and the future. In Murav'ev's view, the image of an honest man was comparable to the notion of Ancient Roman citizenship, comprising good manners, politeness, and dedication to the Roman Empire. The article examines the manifestation of Murav'ev's model of behaviour in his unpublished letters, located in the archive of the State Museum of History in Moscow.

Nikolay Lvov (1753–1803) composed thirteen friendly epistles in the last decade of his life, but did not publish them. They were destined for a small audience — his close friends and relatives, including such poets as Gavriil Derzhavin, Vasily Kapnist, Fedor Lvov, Apollos Musin-Puskin, and Ivan Muravyev-Apostol. This friendly atmosphere determined the poetics of Lvov’s epistles and made them an area of bold experimentation. The poet used various meters in his epistles (mostly free iambs and trochees; also pentons, as in folk songs), he mixed lofty lexicon with colloquial expressions and dialectisms, he created small cycles and combined “incompatible” themes. In the first group of Lvov’s friendly epistles, the purest expression of friendship dominates, making them often border on the nonsensical. The second group proclaims the ideals of a nationally colored Horatianism and contains original descriptions of rural life in Russia.
The article also treats the genre of friendly epistles in 18th-century Russian poetry more broadly, its history and the role of poets like Mikhail Kheraskov, Mikhail Muravyev, Gavriil Derzhavin. Special attention is devoted to the poetics and prosody of the Russian epistolary lyric.
Николай Александрович Львов (1753–1803) в последнее десятилетие своей жизни создал тринадцать дружеских посланий, предназначенных для узкой аудитории — для своих близких друзей и родственников, к которым принадлежали такие поэты, как Гавриил Державин, Василий Капнист, Федор Львов, Аполлос Мусин-Пушкин, Иван Муравьев-Апостол. Эта дружеская атмосфера определила поэтику посланий Львова, обратив их в поле для смелых экспериментов. Поэт использовал в своих посланиях различные размеры (большей частью вольные ямбы и хореи; также и пентоны, как в народных песнях), смешивал высокую лексику с разговорными оборотами и диалектизмами, создавал мини-циклы и сочетал «несовместимые» темы. В первой группе посланий доминирует дружеская экспрессия в чистом виде, так что они часто балансируют на грани бессмыслицы. Вторая группа провозглашает идеалы национально окрашенного горацианства и содержит оригинальные описания сельской русской жизни.
Статья также рассматривает жанр дружеских посланий в русской поэзии XVIII в. в целом, его историю и роль в ней таких поэтов, как М.М. Херасков, М.Н. Муравьев, Г.Р. Державин. Особенное внимание уделено поэтике и метрике русской эпистолярной лирики.

Материал, на котором основана статья – несколько десятков случаев употребления слова «веременник» в источниках конца XV – XVII вв. Их можно разделить на две группы: 1) «веременник» как конкретный «ближний человек» государя; 2) «веременник» как абстрактный «сильный человек», земной правитель. Слово фигурирует, главным образом, в текстах «неофициального» происхождения (исключение – посольские книги, в которых таким образом именовались представители элиты кочевых сообществ) и практически не используется ни одним из авторов применительно к своему социальному кругу. Свидетельства иностранцев позволяют предположить, что слово широко употреблялось в повседневной речи. «Веременник» не состоялся в качестве русского «фаворита» – нейтрального термина, обозначающего приближённое к правителю лицо – в силу специфических коннотаций.

The paper studies Nikolay Karamzin’s “Conversation on Happiness” (1797) in the context of the history of ideas. As possible sources the works of Alexander Pope, Charles Bonnet, Bernard de Fontenelle and Adam Smith are discussed.

Строфометрический анализ анакреонтических од приводит к выводу о существовании в русской поэзии XVIII столетия двух доминирующих канонов в этом жанре — ломоносовского и сумароковского. В «Стихотворении Анакреона Тийского» (1794) Н. А. Львов предпринял попытку примирить каноны предшественников. Он полагал, что анакреонтические оды должны писаться белым стихом (это роднит его с А. П. Сумароковым), но в то же время он допускал чередование женских и мужских клаузул, как это практиковал М. В. Ломоносов. Отвергнув строфическое членение и отказавшись на словах от рифм, он, на первый взгляд, следует Сумарокову, хотя в то же время, вводя альтернанс мужских и женских рифм, прокладывает дорогу строфике. Спорадическое употребление Львовым рифм еще в большей степени выдает его симпатии к поэтике анакреонтических од Ломоносова. Именно половинчатость предложенного Львовым решения приводит к тому, что в истории русской анакреонтической поэзии львовский канон оказывается лишь интересным эпизодом, а его релевантность ограничивается творчеством И. И. Мартынова, литератора, биографически связанного с Львовым.
An overview of the strophic and metrical repertoire of Russian anacreontic odes demonstrates that there were two dominant canons in the eighteenth century — one created by Mikhail Lomonosov, the other by Aleksandr Sumarokov. Nikolaj L’vov in his 1794 “Poetry of Anacreon of Teos” attempted to reconcile the canons of his predecessors. He assumed that anacreontic odes should be written in blank verse (like Sumarokov) with alternating masculine and feminine endings (like Lomonosov). In rejecting rhymes and strophic forms, L’vov on first glance appears to follow Sumarokov, but by accepting the alternating clausulae he paves the way for stanzas. Sporadic rhymes in L’vov's anacreontics indicate still more his interest in Lomonosovs poetics. It was precisely this compromise solution that makes L’vovs canon only an interesting episode in the history of Russian anacreontic poetry. It was apparently only relevant for the work of Ivan Martynov, a younger poet and translator who was biographically related to L’vov.

В многослойных текстах Карамзина новая эпистемология эпохи Просвещения и немецкая "антропологическая эстетика" замещают античную традицию риторики и поэтики.

The paper studies Nikolay Karamzin's theoretical judgements of art in the context of the emerging discourse of philosophical aesthetics. In Karamzin's multi-layered texts new Enlightenment epistemology and German 'anthropological aesthetics' replace ancient tradition of rhetoric and poetics.
