Semiótica Peirceana

Umberto Eco (1975; 1985) has invariantly maintained that specular images have no semiosic status, basically because they stand in front rather than instead of an object. In his Kant and the Platypus (1997), Eco returns offering reasons to exclude specular images from signs, and definitely classifies mirrors as visual prosthetic devices. In this paper I argue that Eco is partly right and partly wrong. He is right inasmuch as he claims that seeing an object in a mirror must count as a case of seeing that object rather than as a case of seeing a sign of that object (or, a sign standing for a propositional content about that object). The only reason why we should agree with Eco on this point, however, is that otherwise we would be forced to admit that also when we see the object in normal visual perception, with no mirror involved, what we really see is a sign. But then Eco is wrong because he does not acknowledge that, although mirror phenomena do have no semiosic status per se, they may acquire it by taking advantage of independent sign-functions – thus coming to be part of what I call parasiticly semiosic phenomena. Specifically, since an object that is visually perceived in a mirror may appear to have some spatial or topological properties that the real object does not possess, it is sufficient for the mirror phenomenon to exploit an independent sign-function whose expressions admit spatial or topological properties among their distinctive traits in order for it to become fully (though parasiticly) semiosic.

It is widely held nowadays that Saussurean semiology and the Peircean theory of signs are two major semiotic schools that, although they have certain theoretical and historical background in common, are incommensurable.

However, it appears that numerous — and evidently strong — points of incongruence between Saussurean (and post-Saussurean) semiology and Peirce's semiotics do not prevent the possibility of some important theoretical intuitions common to both traditions. In particular, this claim finds support in light of Russian formalism — essentially a Saussurean-type semiotic school that gained wide acclaim in mid-twentieth century Europe alongside French structuralism. Without challenging the truth of the obvious differences between the two schools, this paper undertakes to reinterpret some of the late formalist concepts on the problem of continuity in terms of Peirce's semiotics. The brief account this paper presents has a double objective: (1) to give a particular example of how some basic formalist analytical categories may be placed in the wider context of Peirce's semiotics, thus making the purely structural aspect of meaning a particular case of Peirce's theory of signs, and (2) to show the possibility of building a case in which Peirce's semiotic ideas might actually be applied as efficient tools in the examination of different traditional discourses. This objective is accomplished by way of a sample analysis of Vladimir Propp's “Oedipus in Light of Folklore” in terms of Peirce's “On a New List of Categories.”

It is often thought that consciousness has a qualitative dimension that cannot be tracked by science. Recently, however, some philosophers have argued that this worry stems not from an elusive feature of the mind, but from the special nature of the concepts used to describe conscious states. Marc Champagne draws on the neglected branch of philosophy of signs or semiotics to develop a new take on this strategy. 

The term “semiotics” was introduced by John Locke in the modern period – its etymology is ancient Greek, and its theoretical underpinnings are medieval. Charles Sanders Peirce made major advances in semiotics, so he can act as a pipeline for these forgotten ideas. Most philosophers know Peirce as the founder of American pragmatism, but few know that he also coined the term “qualia,” which is meant to capture the intrinsic feel of an experience. Since pragmatic verification and qualia are now seen as conflicting commitments, Champagne endeavors to understand how Peirce could (or thought he could) have it both ways. The key, he suggests, is to understand how humans can insert distinctions between features that are always bound.

Recent attempts to take qualities seriously have resulted in versions of panpsychism, but Champagne outlines a more plausible way to achieve this. So, while semiotics has until now been the least known branch of philosophy ending in –ics, his book shows how a better understanding of that branch can move one of the liveliest debates in philosophy forward.

This article builds on C. S. Peirce’s suggestive blueprint for an inclusive outlook that grants reality to his three categories. Moving away from the usual focus on (contentious) cosmological forces, I use a modal principle to partition various ontological layers: regular sign-action (like coded language) subsumes actual sign-action (like here-and-now events) which in turn subsumes possible sign-action (like qualities related to whatever would be similar to them). Once we realize that the triadic sign’s components are each answerable to this asymmetric subsumption, we obtain the means to track at which level of complexity semiosis finds itself, in a given case. Since the bulk of such a “trinitarian” metaphysics would be devoted to countenancing un-interpreted phenomena, I argue that current misgivings about sign-based ontologies are largely misplaced.

In response to the claim that our sense of will is illusory, some philosophers have called for a better understanding of the phenomenology of agency. Although I am broadly sympathetic with the tenor of this response, I question whether the positive-theoretic blueprint it promotes truly heralds a tenable undertaking. Marshaling a Schopenhauerian insight, I examine the possibility that agency might not be amenable to phenomenological description. Framing this thesis in terms of Charles S. Peirce’s semiotic framework, I suggest a way to integrate the idea of streaming experiences with that of bodily strivings, which, owing to their primitive structure, can never be represented.

Resumen La biosemiótica es un enfoque reciente de la biología teórica que se centra en la interpretación de la biología a partir de la teoría filosófica de los signos conocida como semiótica. La contribución de la biosemiótica se encuentra en la interpretación de los signos no sólo como convenciones, sino como un aspecto del carácter natural y esencial de los fenómenos vivos. La unidad del viviente, desde la perspectiva filosófica de la biosemiótica, describe cómo es que los sistemas vivos requieren asumir categorías semióticas fundamentales. En el caso de Peirce, la biosemiótica expresa la irreducibilidad teleológica de los fenómenos vivos (a pesar de ser continuos con las realidades materiales). Abstract Biosemeiotics is a recent approach to theoretical biology centered in the interpretation of biology from a philosophical theory of signs known as semeiotics. Biosemeiotics contribution is found in the interpretation of signs not only as conventions but as a real aspect of the natural and essential being of living phenomena. The unity of the living being, from the approach of biosemeiotics, describes how is that living systems ought to assume fundamental semeiotic categories. For the case of Peirce, biosemeiotics expresses the teleological irreducibility of living phenomena (even thought they are continuous with their material reality).

Comunicação e Ética. O Sistema Semiótico de Charles S. Peirce starts by outlining Peirce’s Philosophy as a system which draws its basic architectonic features from his categories. Presenting Peirce’s Philosophy as a system is in itself a major challenge, for he never wrote a work which summed up the whole of his thought, and the peircean corpus is vast and somehow a-systematic in its presentation.
The work also draws on Peirce’s influence in the European Philosopher, the German Karl-Otto Apel, and the major role it played in Apel’s «Ethics of Discussion», which influenced other leading philosophers, namely Jürgen Habermas, among others.
Building up Peirce’s Philosophy seen as a system, through his categories theory, the work then turns to his Metaphysics – a subject only very recently rehabilitated amongst peircean studies – describing its essential features and how its Metaphysics, in the end, can be considered the keystone to Peirce’s Architectonics.
This done, the book turns to what can be considered its essential and most original contribution to the field: the perspective of a Peircean Ethics project as one that could solve the blocking contemporary ethics debate is facing. In a very, very brief way: contemporary ethics worked its way to a dead-end. On the one side we have Discussion Ethics unable to solve the problem presented by human agency and the fact that human behaviour is not always (if ever) strictly rational. On the other we have contemporary American Virtue Ethics, which tries to cope with the agent problems presented by Discussion Ethics, and all deontic ethics of kantian flavour, proposing a return to Aristotle (Alasdair MacIntyre is the leading scholar in this field) but is constrained to do so at the price of loosing the possibility of universal identification of its agents – therefore blocking dialogue and ethical practice, which gets confined to particular communities and forms of life.
Comunicação e Ética. O Sistema Semiótico de Charles S. Peirce intends to show that a return to Peirce and to his conception of Sentimentalism – an ethics of sentiment devoted to rendering the world more reasonable –, and which can only be understood outlining his philosophy has a system, explaining his conception of Normative Science and the solid bond it establishes with Metaphysics, would solve both Virtue and Discussion Ethics difficulties. This could be achieved whether developing a peircean ethics program of its own, whether developing a virtue ethics program inspired on Peirce and his ethical insights, instead of Aristotle, that was the key inspiration to first generation virtue ethicists. Either way, the result would be the same: solving the contemporary ethics puzzle through a new path opened, but not trodden, by the greatest American philosopher.

Comunicação e Ética. O Sistema Semiótico de Charles S. Peirce começa por apresentar a filosofia de Peirce como um sistema cuja arquitectónica repousa na doutrina das categorias. Fazê-lo, representa só por si um desafio, pois este nunca escreveu uma obra que sumariasse a totalidade do seu pensamento, e o corpus peirceano é vasto e assistemático na sua apresentação.
O ensaio ocupa-se também da influência exercida por Peirce no filósofo alemão Karl-Otto Apel, e no papel decisivo que essa influência desempenhou na Ética da Discussão apeleana. Após reconstruir a filosofia de Peirce vista como sistema, através da sua doutrina das categorias, ocupa-se depois da sua Metafísica – um tema só muito recentemente reabilitado no campo dos estudos peirceanos – descrevendo os seus aspectos essenciais, e o modo como a Metafísica pode ser considerada a pedra angular da arquitectónica do sistema peirceano.

Após esta avaliação, é perspectivada a reconstrução de uma Ética Peirceana, um projecto que poderia resolver o impasse que o debate ético contemporâneo enfrenta. Por um lado, a Ética da Discussão mostra-se impotente para resolver o problema do agenciamento humano, da motivação, e do facto de o comportamento humano nem sempre ser racional. Por outro, a Ética das Virtudes, inspirada no neo-aristotelismo de MacIntyre, procura resolver a questão do telos da acção humana, mas fá-lo perdendo a possibilidade da identificação universal dos seus agentes, confinando a prática ética a comunidades e formas de vida particulares. Assim, neste impasse, encontramos de um lado estrito universalismo e presunção de racionalidade, eliminando tudo o que lhe escapa; de outro, telos particulares que alimentam a acção mas que não são universalizáveis, nem necessariamente compatíveis entre si.
Comunicação e Ética. O Sistema Semiótico de Charles S. Peirce procura mostrar como um retorno a Peirce e à sua concepção de Sentimentalismo – uma ética do sentimento devotada a rendering the world more reasonable –, e que só pode ser plenamente compreendida no quadro da sua filosofia, e à luz da Metafísica e da concepção de Ciência Normativa e de Pragmatismo, permitiria ultrapassar tanto as dificuldades da Ética da Discussão como as da Ética das Virtudes.

FUNDAMENTACIÓN: Este seminario se propone presentar las potencialidades que ofrecen los estudios semióticos -y en especial la perspectiva de C. S. Peirce y sus reelaboraciones contemporáneas- para el análisis de discursos verbales y visuales. La propuesta busca ofrecer las herramientas de la Semiótica para el estudio de los modos en que un determinado discurso hace sentido para una comunidad, así como de las maneras en que tal discurso interviene para reproducir o desafiar los lenguajes, los espacios y los sistemas de valores que lo han gestado. La semiótica será entendida, entonces, como una herramienta metodológica altamente eficaz para la organización y el abordaje del objeto durante la actividad investigativa. En tal sentido, busca articular los contenidos de las clases con las problemáticas, las temáticas y los discursos que los participantes se encuentran actualmente indagando.

Suicidio assistito e diritto sono affrontati, in questo saggio, combinando un approccio semiotico e la prospettiva filosofica di Levinas. Attraverso questa duplice lente sono analizzati gli sviluppi giurisprudenziali più recenti, con particolare riferimento all'Italia, sullo sfondo dei contributi forniti sul tema della morte, dell'immortalità e del suicidio da alcune grandi voci della produzione letteraria. A distanziare le argomentazioni presentate nel saggio dalle più diffuse posizioni pro o contro le molteplici possibilità di controllo del 'morire', destinate a essere moltiplicate dalla tecnologiadel futuro, è l'analisi del significato cognitivo e co-generativo dell'accudimento.

Kant posits the schema as a hybrid bridging the generality of pure concepts and the particularity of sensible intuitions. However, I argue that countenancing such schemata leads to a third-man regress. Siding with those who think that the midway posit of the Critique of Pure Reason's schematism section is untenable, my diagnosis is that Kant's transcendental inquiry goes awry because it attempts to analyze a form/matter union that is primitive. I therefore sketch a nonrepresentational stance aimed at respecting this primitivity.

O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar e defender uma representação visual diagramática das três categorias fenomenológicas peirceanas, conceitos partícipes da principal teoria que fundamenta o pensamento da obra do semioticista norte-americano, Charles Sanders Peirce: a fenomenologia. Nesse sentido, buscamos através do design - mais precisamente da ilustração - desenvolver um diagrama que revele as peculiaridades de cada categoria e denote o modo como as três categorias se engendram nos processos fenomênicos. Objetiva-se, assim, auxiliar a comunidade acadêmica no entendimento e aplicação da complexa teoria Semiótica, buscando para isso suporte da linguagem visual.

Web design: guia de produção e análise” é uma pesquisa científica que tem como propósito investigar o contexto de desenvolvimento e os processos de produção de sites na WWW (World Wide Web).  O termo produção é nesta tese entendido como a realização de procedimentos que vão desde a concepção criativa, passando pela organização estrutural, desenvolvimento visual, implementação de ferramentas, até a efetivação dos diversos tipos de relações que se estabelecem entre as hipermídias online e os indivíduos interatores. Fundamentada por conceitos da Semiótica Peirceana e Teoria Geral de Sistemas, a presente pesquisa tem por objetivo oferecer um guia orientado para produção e análise de projetos desenvolvidos para serem veiculados e fruídos na internet. Além de levantarmos um material teórico que tornam mais claras as etapas que envolvem esses tipos de produções, cuidamos de desenvolver uma fundamentação que indica caminhos e condutas para que produtores possam desenvolver produções eficientes do ponto de vista comunicativo. Buscando uma ênfase fenomenológica na investigação desse tipo de desenvolvimento, tratamos de considerar a produção em web design como um processo sistêmico, composto de signos de naturezas diversas, conduzido por ideais normativos e desenvolvido a partir da articulação de raciocínios específicos. Ao longo da tese, pontuamos o levantamento teórico com análises aplicadas em amostras de sites já desenvolvidos. Isso implica que toda a fundamentação conduz imediatamente à demonstração empírica de sua aplicabilidade e eficiência, como substrato importante de um guia de produção e análise das formas hipermidiáticas de comunicação interpessoal.

C. S. Peirce is often credited as a forerunner of the verificationist theory of meaning. In his early pragmatist papers, Peirce did say that if we want to make our ideas clear(er), then we should look downstream to their actual and future effects. For many who work in philosophy of mind, this is enough to endorse functionalism and dismiss the whole topic of qualia. It complexifies matters, however, to consider that the term qualia was introduced by the founder of pragmatism himself. Peirce was adamant that only triadic relations can support language and cognition. Even so, he insisted on purely logical grounds that, when we analyze triadic signs all the way, we are left with a qualitative residue he called Firstness. Such an isolated relatum could never be studied experimentally. Yet, given that this primitive state can be confirmed by means of a formal or prescissive distinction, I believe the Peircean account can do justice to many of the intuitions that generate the so-called hard problem of consciousness. My goal, then, is to show that Peirce's semiotic commitment to qualia is compatible with his foundational statements about pragmatism.

The present paper is aimed at showing some correlations between Charles Peirce’s life, his intellectual habits as a logician and mathematician, his semiotic theory and his practice as a geodesist. For this purpose, it makes use of Peirce’s ideas about the nature of visual experience, some facts of his intellectual biography, and his definitions of sign and the term “virtual.” It appears that Peirce’s mature pragmatist and semiotic ideas find some support in his early practice as a scientist and a mathematician, thus providing an interesting example of the intersection of scientific practice and philosophical speculation.

Resumo: No século XX, abriu-se um campo muito rico para atuação de uma ciência nascente e muito profícua, a semiótica, em especial, a semiótica peirciana, como ferramenta de leitura e análise dos signos. Segundo Santaella e Nöth (2015, p. 22-23), muitos são os filósofos, após Peirce, que anunciam uma "crise da representação" na linguagem, como Heidegger, Adorno, Lukács e Lyotard. Outros autores, com menos ênfase, apresentam uma "perda da representação", como Foucault (2000). No entanto, há teorias mais radicais, como a desconstrução da representação em Derrida. Apresentaremos, de modo sucinto, esta teoria de Derrida (1994; 1973) que defende uma impossibilidade da re-presentação como reprodução da apresentação ou presentificação. Em seguida, faremos uma análise crítica do caso de Derrida à luz da semiótica de Peirce (2019), no intuito de expor um dos desenvolvimentos posteriores do pensamento peirciano sobre este problema.

CHARLES S. PEIRCE AND THE CRISIS OF REPRESENTATION IN THE LANGUAGE OF THE XX CENTURY: A SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF THE CASE OF DERRIDA

Abstract: In the 20th century, a very rich field for the performance of a nascent and very fruitful science emerged, semiotics, especially Peircean semiotics, as a tool for reading and analyzing signs. According to Santaella and Nöth (2015, p. 22-23), there are many philosophers, after Peirce, who announce a “crisis of representation” in language, such as Heidegger, Adorno, Lukács and Lyotard. Other authors, with little emphasis, present a “loss of representation”, like Foucault (2000). However, there are more radical theories, such as the deconstruction of representation in Derrida. We will show, in a succinct way, this theory by Derrida (1994; 1973) that defends an impossibility of re-presentation as reproduction of the presentation or presentification. Then, we will make a critical analysis of Derrida's case in the light of Peirce's semiotics (2019), in order to expose one of the later developments of Peircean thought on this problem.

O Grindr é um aplicativo de encontros afetivo-sexuais majoritariamente utilizado por homens, que investem em autoconstruções sígnicas em seus perfis a fim de atraírem possíveis parceiros. Emergem nestes perfis diferentes masculinidades, sobretudo marcadas pela fronteira entre o afeminado e o macho. Nosso objetivo é investigar a semiose que envolve a figura do afeminado no Grindr. Ancorados na semiótica peirciana, valemo-nos do conceito de mediação como operador analítico-metodológico, pensando de que modo a ação sígnica dos
perfis desencadeia processos de significação ligados ao tipo de masculinidade em questão. Em nossa análise qualitativa de 9 perfis, notamos que o signo afeminado, em sua dimensão verbal e visual, é tido como frágil e passivo, alguém que não cuida de si e fracassa na gestão de sua virilidade. Contrariamente, esta figura também desperta outros interpretantes, menos recorrentes no aplicativo, em que a existência do afeminado é lida como contestadora, política, subversiva e livre.

In this paper, I propose to interweave narrativity and aspectuality by focusing on the internal temporality of narrated events. From a phaneroscopical point of view, I construct an aspectual characterization of the notion of event, visualizing the content of what is narrated as a semiotic process of morphologies in becoming. Conceived as a process of morphological semiosis, narrativity involves a schematic and analogic visualization of the flux of narrated events in a situational space. This dynamic of events in becoming is in consonance with a process of aspectual generation of a Peircean character. In it, we go from the one to the multiple—from a germ space to an aspectual topological space — through a constructive process bound to a set of regularities. In accordance with this proposal, every time we have a pair of narrative trajectories that aspectually unfold in our situational space and that converge on the appearance of a single event, we can infer the existence of their corresponding narrative schemas. These schematic entities will make up a synthesis process that will behave, relationally, as a structure of actantial character, an actantiality of events. From a morphodynamical point of view, we will show that this actantial knot can be viewed as a cusp catastrophe. In addition, we will exhibit that this conceptualization coincides with the semiotic paradigm proposed by René Thom.

"Representation" is one of those Janus-faced terms that seems blatantly obvious when used in a casual or pre-theoretic manner, but which reveals itself far more slippery when attentively studied. Any allusion to "metarepresentation," it would then seem, only compounds these difficulties. Taking the metarepresentationalist framework in its roughest outline as our point of departure, we shall instead try to articulate four key "structural" features that appear binding for any such theory.

"Poéticas em net arte: fruição e análise" consiste na proposição de três parâmetros para análise de obras de arte, especialmente para o entendimento das relações de fruição com as poéticas net artísticas. Procura-se, através desta proposição, oferecer material teórico de cunho lógico-fenomenológico que viabilize análises críticas que estejam afastadas dos julgamentos críticos de gosto e valor.

Para a fundamentação do trabalho, foram utilizados conceitos da Fenomenologia e Semiótica Peirceanas e teorias estéticas que contribuem para o entendimento do conceito de poética, dando especial destaque ao pensamento filosófico de Luigi Pareyson.

Com essa base, buscou-se compreender os movimentos próprios de composições sígnicas de obras de arte afim de clarear a compreensão das linguagens e expressões artísticas aos quais se filiam esses tipos de obras.

"The term information is omnipresent in academic research as well as in everyday life. Buzz words such as information society, information age or information overload are floating around everywhere. But what do we mean exactly with 'information' in different contexts?

The philosopher Rafael Capurro dealt with this question in the late 1970's in his PhD thesis on the concept of information. Especially the philosophical community was suffering at that time from a lack of reflection thereupon. Capurro tried to fill this gap. The following remark by the physicist and philosopher Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker (1912-2007) had a particular impact on him.

"Today we are getting accustomed [...] to understand information as something different from matter and consciousness. What we have discovered is an old truth in a new place. It is the Platonic eidos, the Aristotelian form, expressed in words such that also a human being in the 20th century can learn about them."

Weizsäcker’s step back to the history of ideas motivated Capurro also to deal with ethical issues of the information society particularly since the rise of the internet. The handling of digital information requires new cultural skills that are addressed with the term 'information literacy.' In the last ten years many projects in the Library and Information Science field (LIS) include or are even focused on information literacy (IL). In many of these projects there is a pre-understanding that IL has to do with the ability to find, filter, and process digital information. At the same time, there is a gap between this pre-understanding and an the ongoing academic discussion on the concept of information. The following dialogue deals particularly with this gap."

En la documentación de idiomas hoy en día, muchos lingüistas están usando métodos videográficos para hacer artefactos de un idioma “en su contexto cultural”, pero en muchos casos los investigadores transcriben y analizan los videos como si fueran grabaciónes únicamente de audio atendiendo solamente al habla. Hablaré sobre la documentación de la gramática por medio de usos naturales del discurso y como el lenguaje se amolda como parte de una ecología de interacción cooperativa y multimodal. Voy a compartir partes de mi manuscrito titulado “Diciendo y haciendo en zapoteco: lenguaje y acciones conjuntas en un pueblo oaxaqueño”. En la representación de idiomas, trabajaremos hacia una teoría que no favorezca ni el texto ni el contexto, pero que examine ecologías multimodales que emergen por capacidades semióticas organizada en el tiempo y el espacio del uso actual. Las morfemas y las frases, la manipulación de la voz, los gestos, la mirada y los objeto materiales tienen sus propios potenciales como medios o partes de las composiciones semióticas que integran a los participantes en su juego. Empezaré hablando de la comunidad de Lachixío en la sierra sur de Oaxaca donde realizo mis trabajos de campo, para después acercarme a los conceptos básicos de la interacción multimodal y analizaré las distintas teorías del signo lingüístico para preguntar ¿que concepto del signo necesitamos para investigar la naturaleza de un idioma vivo? Hacia el final, introduciré la práctica de la sintaxis dialógica y la análisis de la gramática de resonancia que provee métodos particularmente adecuado para descubrir y analizar la gramática en corpora de conversaciones.

O potencial analítico dos modelos de três e dez classes de signos de C. S. Peirce é reconhecido pelos pesquisadores da área. O mesmo não se pode dizer do sistema de 66 classes. Pouco conhecido, pois foi deixado em aberto por Peirce, e ainda é alvo de muitas discussões a respeito de sua aplicabilidade. Com o propósito de mostrar o seu potencial analítico, este artigo apresentará uma análise dos sinsignos icônicos extraída de uma análise completa de uma fonte tipográfica fundamentada no sistema de 66 classes de signos. Além de corresponder à parte empírica de uma pesquisa teórica, que propõe de um modelo analítico com as 66 classes, a análise mostra detalhes da relação entre sinsignos icônicos e qualissignos que não podem ser percebidos nos sistemas com menos classes, o que é uma evidência da contribuição do sistema de 66 classes a semiótica.

A construção do tempo polidimensional na hipermídia pressupõe o jogo com a simultaneidade de tempos. Na hipermídia a percepção do tempo está intimamente relacionada com o espaço, transformando-se numa relação com a duração com aquele instante. Nesse modo a hipermídia apresenta-se como uma potência que apresenta uma multiplicidade de tempos.

Os registros do processo de criação em Sofia Coppola apontam para uma tendência do seu projeto poético, a busca pela jornada íntima dos personagens. Com base nessa tendência, analisaremos os clímaces dos filmes The Virgin Suicides (1999); Lost in Translation (2003); Marie Antoinette (2006); Somewhere (2010) e The Bling Ring (2013) em uma perspectiva relacional. Esta pesquisa encontra apoio teórico e metodológico na crítica de processos de Cecília A. Salles, conforme estudada no grupo de pesquisa em Processos de criação (CNPq) do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação e Semiótica da PUC-SP, e nos conceitos de jornada do mitólogo Joseph Campbell (1990; 2007; 2008) e de clímax e ideia governante de Robert McKee (2006). __________________________________________________ The records of the creation process in Sofia Coppola indicate a trend, which is the search for the intimate journey of the characters. Proceeding with the trend of Sofia Coppola's poetic project, the following movies will be analyzed from the viewpoint of the creation process: The Virgin Suicides (1999); Lost in Translation (2003); Marie Antoinette (2006); Somewhere (2010) and The Bling Ring (2013) in a relational perspective. This research has the theoretical and methodological support from the Cecília A. Salles’s critical process, as studied in the research group in Creation processes from the PostGraduate Program in Communication and Semiotics of Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo – PUC-SP, and the mythologist Joseph Campbell's journey concept (1990; 2007; 2008) and the Robert McKee’s climax and controlling idea concepts (2006).

Traducción al español de la ponencia que Charles S. Peirce pronunció en 1906 ante la Academia Nacional de Ciencia. Consiste en dos manuscritos parcialmente inéditos (MS 499 y MS 490). El primero es una presentación sobre el valor del sistema de gráficos existenciales para la lógica. El segundo es la presentación del sistema de gráficos existenciales y ha sido parcialmente publicado en los Collected Papers. Hay cierto grado de certeza en que este último manuscrito fue realmente leído durante el encuentro de la Academia Nacional de Ciencia pues contiene la exposición más directa del sistema de gráficos existenciales y porque aparecen anotaciones al margen sobre el tiempo estimado de lectura (35 minutos a lo máximo); no obstante, el primer manuscrito es una buena introducción al tema y si se hubiera leído también la presentación no habría sobrepasado la hora. Se ha decidido traducir estos textos pues se considera que es una de las mejores presentaciones, por su claridad y brevedad, que Peirce hizo de su sistema de gráfi cos existenciales. Este texto corresponde además a una edad madura (en 1906 contaba con poco menos de 70 años), y ya su sistema contaba con más de 10 años de existencia. Los desarrollos más importantes se centran principalmente en la tercera parte del sistema llamado gamma. Las dos primeras partes, alpha y beta, no se modifi can con respecto a presentaciones previas; de hecho, el lector encontrará que en esta presentación el sistema alpha no recibe nada de atención y se presenta el sistema completo a partir de beta que incluye la línea de identidad. El sistema gamma recibe un tratamiento diferente con respecto a otras presentaciones gracias a que Peirce descubre una manera diferente de ver la hoja de aserción que le aclara muchos aspectos de gamma, en particular, y del sistema completo, en general. Nos referimos a que la hoja de aserción no es vista más como una superfi cie plana con un solo frente. Ahora Peirce considera que tanto el frente de la hoja, como el reverso le brindan diferente modalidad a los gráficos que se escriban en ellos. El frente de la hoja representa la existencia; en cambio el reverso de la hoja representa posibilidad. El corte es ahora la manera de acceder al reverso de la hoja. Es exactamente como tomar un cuchillo, hacer un corte en el frente de la hoja y girar el área cortada. Para poder diferencias entre las áreas del frente y del reverso, Peirce incluye de ahora en adelante las diferentes tinturas que ayuden al intérprete a identificar qué parte de la hoja se está leyendo. En este texto afirma que el frente es blanco crema y que el reverso es gris azulado.

O presente artigo trata de um estudo sobre os princípios poéticos e o papel interpretativo (sugestionabilidade) de signos e composições sígnicas em produções artísticas audiovisuais. A investigação concentra-se na análise e caracterização das principais funções das informações sonoras, visuais e verbais e seus efeitos interpretativos, quando do deslocamento lógico dessas capacidades. Assim, buscamos identificar, por exemplo, o tipo de efeito que o uso de determinado signo sonoro pode causar na fruição de um filme, quando exploradas as funções que são tendencialmente próximas às imagens. As análises que definem nosso caminho metodológico partem, em princípio, de um recorte de criações artísticas que exploram em algum grau a sinestesia, no sentido acima descrito. A fundamentação teórica utilizada para as investigações desse estudo encontra-se nas noções de signo de Charles Sanders Peirce. Além da teoria Semiótica, buscaremos nos conceitos de sistemas e ambientes (a partir da Teoria Geral de Sistemas), fundamentos para nossas reflexões e discussão científica.
