Deployment of appropriate skills and competencies is crucial and germane to the development and continuous relevance of any profession. In the built environment, the science for selecting the required skills and competencies expected of quantity surveyors and understanding the inherent dependencies between them remains a research issue. The purpose of this study was to determine the skill requirements and competencies expected of quantity surveyors. A structured questionnaire was administered among quantity surveyors, architects, engineers, builders and clients in Nigeria. The respondents were asked to give rating, on a 5 point Likert scale, on usual skills and competencies required of quantity surveyors. A secondary objective of the study was to examine the important skills and competencies and categorized them into core skill, basic skill, core competence, optional competence and special competence. The results of the study indicate the important skills as computer literacy, build...

Carbohydrate and caffeine are known to independently improve certain aspects of athletic performance. However, less is understood about physiological and performance outcomes when these compounds are coingested in a rehydration and carbohydrate-replacement strategy. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of adding a moderate dose of caffeine to a carbohydrate solution during prolonged soccer activity. Fifteen male soccer players performed two 90-min intermittent shuttle-running trials. They ingested a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (CON) providing a total of 1.8 g/kg body mass (BM) of carbohydrate or a similar solution with added caffeine (CAF; 3.7 mg/kg BM). Solutions were ingested 1 hr before exercise and every 15 min during the protocol. Soccer passing skill and countermovement-jump height (CMJ) were quantified before exercise and regularly during exercise. Sprinting performance, heart rate, blood lactate concentration (La) and the subjective experiences of partici...

Skills have recently received widespread attention in education policy documents and discussions. This article reports the results of research on Bachelor's degree physiotherapy students' conceptions of skill at the beginning of their studies. The aim of the present study was to examine how beginning students understand skill, and the focus was on conceptions of skill in general rather than on any particular skills. The participants of the study were 35 physiotherapy students. The data were gathered within the first two weeks of their university studies. Specifically, requested essays written by the students were analyzed using the phenomenographic approach. The data-driven analysis yielded four descriptive categories which reflect the students' conceptions of skill: (1) Talents; (2) Skills requiring individual practice; (3) Skills requiring social practice; and (4) Competence requiring collaboration. The categories form a hierarchy. The differences between the categorie...

In this paper I argue that reflection on competence and enfranchisement in relation to profound disability forces re-examination of the grounds of citizenship, with implications for theories of distributive justice in education. The primary purpose is less to point up that some people are disenfranchised without injustice; it is more to advance the view that, since enfranchisement is not an option for some profoundly disabled people, we require a conception of citizenship that is more sensitive to their distinctive needs and interests.

We present a synthetic theory of skilled action which proposes that cognitive processes make an important contribution to almost all skilled action, contrary to influential views that many skills are performed largely automatically. Cognitive control is focused on strategic aspects of performance, and plays a greater role as difficulty increases. We offer an analysis of various forms of skill experience and show that the theory provides a better explanation for the full set of these experiences than automatic theories. We further show that the theory can explain experimental evidence for skill automaticity, including evidence that secondary tasks do not interfere with expert performance, and evidence that experts have reduced memory for performance of sensorimotor skills.

Medical Education 2010: 44: 347–357Objectives There are recognised difficulties in teaching and assessing intimate examination skills that relate to the sensitive nature of the various examinations and the anxiety faced by novice learners. This systematic review provides a summary of the evidence for the involvement of real patients (RPs) and simulated patients (SPs) in the training of health care professionals in intimate examination skills. Methods For the review, ‘intimate examinations’ included pelvic, breast, testicular and rectal examinations. Major databases were searched from the start of the database to December 2008. The synthesis of findings is integrated by narrative structured to address the main research questions, which sought to establish: the objectives of programmes involving RPs and SPs as teachers of intimate examination skills; reasons why SPs have been involved in this training; the evidence for the effectiveness of such training programmes; the evidence for measures of anxiety in students learning how to perform intimate examinations; how well issues of sexuality are addressed in the literature; any reported negative effects of involvement in teaching on the patients, and suggestions for practical strategies for involving patients in the teaching of intimate examination skills. Results A total of 65 articles were included in the review. Involving patients in teaching intimate examination skills offers advantages over traditional methods of teaching. Objective evidence for the effectiveness of this method is demonstrated through improved clinical performance, reduced anxiety and positive evaluation of programmes. Practical strategies for implementing such programmes are also reported. Conclusions There is evidence of a short-term positive impact of patient involvement in the teaching and assessment of intimate examination skills; however, evidence of longer-term impact is still limited. The influences of sexuality and anxiety related to such examinations are explored to some extent, but the psychological impact on learners and patients is not well addressed.

ABSTRACT I explore affinities and tensions between Culadasa’s model of meta-cognitive skill, in his recent The Mind Illuminated, and theories of skill and metacognition in contemporary philosophy of psychology. I find that, while there are many assumptions that these different approaches share, for the most part, contemporary philosophy of psychology has ignored the possibility that meta-cognitive skills can be cultivated through practice, as Culadasa persuasively argues. The one exception is Joëlle Proust’s recent The Philosophy of Metacognition. This work defends a model of procedural meta-cognition with some striking similarities to Culadasa’s notion of ‘meta-cognitive introspective awareness’, which he views as an important step in the development of śamatha. This is noteworthy, as they have clearly arrived at these notions completely independently, drawing on strikingly different kinds of evidence and argument. I conclude with some thoughts on distinctive puzzles that arise for Culadasa’s conception of meta-cognitive skill.

The stock market is volatile and can be influenced by multiple factors. This can be studied by the fundamental and technical analysis of the stock. Here the objective of this research paper is to study various technical analysis tools and determine the optimum combination of the above tools which can be used to generate buy or sell signals with the highest accuracy. Few technical indicators are studied and considered for this research like Trend lines, Support and Resistance (previous highs and lows), Candlesticks, Bollinger bands, RSI, Stochastics and Moving Averages. Five stocks from five different industries were studied and further analysed. and the Technical indicators in a 6-month time frame were checked. Bollinger Bands have the highest hit rates among all the other indicators with RSI having the second-highest and Williams % R the third.

This chapter offers a critical review of the scientific research on choking effect. Elaborating on Baumeister’s model, the chapter describes various levels and forms of self-consciousness (perceptual, emotional, motivational, psychological), and explores how they causally link to the disruption of sensorimotor skills in expert athletes. We propose to construe choking from the theoretical perspective of embodied cognition theory, as this approach can effectively account for all the particular ways in which self-consciousness influences how the performer perceives and handles pressure.
The first part of the chapter reviews the experiments and the models suggesting that choking is engendered by perceptual and motoric self-consciousness (i.e., the condition in which the athlete over-scrutinizes certain aspects of her/his own actions, explicitly controlling her/his movement in the attempt to improve the performance output). The second part explores a different aspect of self-consciousness, linked to how the psychological, motivational, and emotional backdrop of the athlete’s experience under pressure influences self-presentation and self-esteem – an influence that can negatively affect performance through the mediation of disruptive personal narratives and social constructions of identity.

Concentration is the ability to focus and give undivided attention on a single task by ignoring all other distractions. According to time magazine report the average attention span of human is 8 sec. As per Hartley and Davis average attention span of adult is 10-15 minutes. Observation of environment takes place through immediate concentration. Reading, learning and thinking take place through prolonged concentration. The concentration is needed for students to study subjects and listen class. Due to lack of concentration the teacher student interaction is low. The study aims to analyze the factors influencing concentration and to know about the concentration of students pursuing higher education. The survey was conducted among college students in Tirchy district level. The study reveals the concentration of students who practice online learning is high. In online learning students learn traditional subject through innovative way. The students who have the habit to watch video, read novel has good concentration therefore, habitual practice will improve concentration. Hearing music, practicing yoga and exercise will improve student's concentration skill. Brainstorming, self-testing game, quiz, solving problem during lectures will boost concentration of the students.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is a relatively new construct in differential psychology. Proponents of EI have made strong claims for its importance in basic and applied psychology. This article considers whether the promise of EI has been fulfilled.
We examine various fundamental challenges to establishing EI as a major individual differences factor, including cross-cultural issues. We then examine strategies for assessing EI as a personal quality distinct from general intelligence and personality,
and evaluate leading tests and scales for EI. Various sources of validity evidence demonstrate the value of research on EI, but we also identify various weaknesses of existing instruments. It appears that there is no strong, over-arching general factor of
EI that shapes human emotional functioning across a range of diverse contexts. Instead, we advocate a “multipolar” conception of EI that discriminates temperament, information-processing, emotion-regulation and acquired skills. Focusing research on more narrowly defined but conceptually coherent research domains may be a more productive strategy than seeking to define an all-embracing general EI.

Background: Communication is a necessity of social life which is very important in health care settings due to the type of work and clients. The aim of this study was determine the association between interpersonal communication skills (ICSs) and personality dimensions of nurses working in Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences.
Materials and Methods: In this descriptive study, 223 nurses were selected by stratified random sampling method and they completed the Burton ICSs and the Revised NEO Personality Inventory . Data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation, independent t-test, and multiple linear regression at a significant level of P = 0.050.
Results: Among the selected nurses, 9.9%, 75.8%, and 14.3% had a poor, moderate and good communication skills respectively. The association between age (P = 0.026) and work experience (P = 0.025) with ICSs were inversely significant. There was a significant correlation between good communication skills and the extroversion personality aspect (P = 0.001), pleasure (P < 0.001), and accountability (P = 0.039). The pleasure and extroversion were able to predict and explain 8.7% of the ICSs nurses.
Conclusions: More than half of the nurses had difficulties in ICSs. The communication pattern of nurses is effective in their performance and quality of work; therefore, their personality dimensions and traits can be taken into account in the process of recruiting, transferring, or moving them. Hence, each person can be appropriately located in the right place in terms of the area of activity, and type and number of clients.

Book description:
A comprehensive overview of the world of drinking
Drinking is one of the most basic human needs. However, the act of drinking encompasses much more than just quenching one’s thirst. It is also an important cultural act, that differs broadly in the beverages and their preparation and consumption around the world. This publication describes some of the most charactaristic beverages and their ceremonies.
The authors from different fields of expertise clearly explain the different ways these drinks are prepared, shared, and consumed, and their inherent social power ranging from palm wine in the tropical belt via rice beer in Northeast India to the alpine milk culture in Switzerland. Furthermore, two sommeliers contribute brief descriptions of the beverages which Western palates are not accustomed to – an invitation to the readers to enjoy this book with all their senses.

Objective: Many patients present to emergency departments (EDs) for wounds that require repair by suturing. This study looked at ascertaining the efficacy of Advanced Clinical Nurses’ (ACN) suturing dermal lacerations in tertiary, regional and rural ED settings.Design: Convenience sample; prospective questionnaire.Setting: Three mixed adult and paediatric EDs. These departments were tertiary, regional and rural regional EDs.Participants: Eighty patients requiring sutures for dermal lacerations that were repaired by an ACN. Of them 24 were men and seven were women. Mean age was 40.5 years, with a range of 21–58 years. Ten results from rural ED; six from regional ED; 15 from tertiary ED.Main outcome measure(s): Any differences between suturing standards in rural, regional and tertiary EDs; clinical results of suturing performed by ACNs; local medical officers’ satisfaction with wound repair. Results: A total of 31 responses were received. The lacerations were located on the face in 13 patients (42%), the scalp in 10 (32%), an extremity in 2 (6%), and on the trunk in 6 (20%). A total of 196 sutures were required. Local medical officers graded wound repair as ‘good’ in 24 cases (77%) and adequate in seven cases (23%). There were no wound healing complications reported. Conclusions: Nurses who complete a standardised training program in wound management and repair are capable of providing high-quality, definitive care for patients who present to EDs with dermal lacerations. This is true irrespective of whether the Registered Nurse is working in a rural, regional or tertiary ED.
