Suburbium

Le immagini della via Appia, raccolte in questo volume da Andrea Zocchi, non si limitano a costituire una importante documentazione degli aspetti più pittoreschi degli straordinari paesaggi del Suburbio a sud di Roma, esse evocano soprattutto il tema del viaggio, ed in particolare del viaggio come esperienza culturale.

Nel tratto dell’Appia compreso fra porta San Sebastiano e il sepolcro di Cecilia Metella, l’antica pavimentazione stradale
in basoli di leucitite è sparita ormai da tempo, sostituita prima da battuti e selciatelle, poi dal lastricato in sampietrini e
infine dall’asfalto, rimosso in occasione dei lavori realizzati dal Comune di Roma per il Giubileo del 2000. Dall’analisi
della documentazione d’archivio e dei frammenti di basolato e resti di antiche crepidini rinvenuti durante i lavori, si cerca
di ricostruire il percorso e le quote originali della via Appia in questo settore, soffermandosi su alcune interessanti vicende
moderne della regina viarum.

Along the stretch of the Appian Way between the San Sebastiano gate and the tomb of Cecilia Metella, the ancient paving
– consisting of large blocks of leucitite rock – disappeared long ago. It was first replaced by beaten earth and selciatelle
(small paving stones obtained by reworking the ancient ones), then by sampietrini (small quadrangular blocks of stone
used for paving in Rome since the 16th century) and more recently by asphalt. The asphalt layer was removed during
work carried out by the City of Rome for the 2000 Jubilee Year. By studying archival documents as well as the fragments
of the ancient Roman paving and the vestiges of the crepidines (raised footways that ran along the sides of the road) found
during the Jubilee work, the author seeks to map the original route and elevations of this section of the Appian Way, and
describes several interesting things that affected to it in modern times.

Fra la fine dell’Ottocento e i primi decenni del secolo successivo si compiono gli interventi urbanistici che trasformano definitivamente l’aspetto della zona fuori porta San Paolo, da suburbio con vocazione prettamente agricola a quartiere industriale. Lo spoglio della cartografia storica e dei documenti d’archivio relativi agli interventi effettuati in questo periodo lungo il primo tratto della via Ostiense restituisce la memoria, altrimenti perduta, di un ricco patrimonio archeologico e contribuisce ad una migliore definizione della topografia antica dell’area.

"Il 16-17 febbraio 2005, su iniziativa dell’École française de Rome e in collaborazione con la Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Roma, la Sovraintendenza Comunale BB.CC. ed il Dipartimento di Scienze del Mondo Antico dell’Università della Tuscia, si è tenuto – presso la sede dell’École française
de Rome – il secondo incontro di un percorso di ricerca riguardante il territorio circostante l’antica Roma, dal titolo Suburbium II. Il Suburbio di Roma dalla fine dell’età monarchica alla nascita del sistema delle ville (V-II sec. a.C.).
Questo specifico convegno scientifico, come il precedente (tenutosi nel 2000), era volto a sollecitare un dibattito comune sui temi dell’occupazione e dello sfruttamento del suburbio, nel suo rapporto con la città."

The 2019 excavation campaign of Villa A in Dragoncello (Acilia) represents the continuation of the previous interventions, realised by the same team, in the years 2016 and 2017. The activities preliminarely included a series of geophysical surveys, carried out along the S and W sides of the Villa. Later, these surveys have been extended to the Northern part of the park where the Villa is located, never investigated archaeologically before, with the aim to verify the possible presence of ancient structures. During the 2019 campaign, excavations were carried out on the so called Ambiente V, partially investigated in the previous two campaigns, and the Sector C, newly discovered, for a total area of 350mq.
In particular, the investigations of the Ambiente V concerned the Northern part, for a total of 81mq, with the further aim of identifying an entrance.
In the Sector C, investigated for 230mq, three basins, relating to at least three different chronological phases, and some other walls have been identified.

La campagna di scavo della Villa A di Dragoncello (Acilia) del 2019 rappresenta la continuazione dei precedenti interventi, effettuati dalla stessa équipe, negli anni 2016 e 2017. Le attività hanno innanzitutto previsto una serie di prospezioni geofisiche, effettuate lungo i margini a S e a O della villa e, in seguito, nella zona settentrionale del parco dove è sita la Villa, mai indagata archeologicamente, con lo scopo di verificare l’eventuale presenza di strutture antiche. Le operazioni di scavo hanno interessato l’Ambiente V, già investigato parzialmente nelle campagne precedenti, e il Settore C, di nuovo rinvenimento, per un'area totale di 350 mq.
In particolare, le indagini nell’Ambiente V hanno riguardato la parte settentrionale, per un totale 81 mq, con lo scopo ulteriore di individuarne un ingresso.
Nel Settore C, indagato per 230 mq, sono state individuate tre vasche, relative ad almeno tre diverse fasi cronologiche, e alcune murature di ambienti.

Soutenance d'habilitation le 28 septembre 2020 à Nanterre avec un dossier de 2400 pages (Garant Frédéric Hurlet, professeur d'histoire romaine à Nanterre).  Un mémoire de synthèse concernant les logiques du parcours personnel de recherche ("ego-histoire"); une nouvelle enquête d’histoire sociale, une monographie de 802 pages, intitulée Les modalités d’intégration des sénateurs d’Asie Mineure à Rome et en Italie, d'Auguste à Gallien (Mémoire inédit). Un recueil de 32 articles et 3 notes critiques (recueil d'articles depuis la soutenance de 2003), ainsi que le livre de 2016 (Des Grecs et des Italiens à Éphèse).

Habilitation to conduct researches  defense on September 28th 2020, in Nanterre with a 2400-page dossier (and with Frédéric Hurlet, university professor of Roman History in Nanterre). A synthesis dissertation on the logics of the personal path of research; a new social history survey, a monograph of 802 pages, entitled The Modalities of Integration of Senators from Asia Minor in Rome and Italy, from Augustus to Gallian.  A collection of 32 articles and 3 critical notes, as well as the 2016 book.

Il terzo volume dedicato ai materiali e agli studi in corso su Villa Maruffi, mette in evidenza l’interesse per la storia della cultura che scaturisce da questa struttura e dal territorio in cui è compresa, attraversola raccolta di bolli impressi su laterizi antichi. Dalla contestualizzazione e dall’analisi di questi elementi emerge la testimonianza materiale della fitta trama di ville che caratterizza il suburbio di Roma fin dall’antichità, si seguono le fasi di più intensa edificazione e di declino, ma si possono ricostruire anche altre storie. Quella delle famiglie che ci hanno lasciato il loro marchio di fabbrica, oppure quella dei proprietari che hanno abitato nel tempo le stesse strutture, fino alla fase moderna di scoperta e di ‘estrazione’ dei materiali antichi dai terreni. Storie di persone, di attività, di luoghi, che si rivelano a chi ha la curiosità di guardare con interesse profondo anche le tracce meno appariscenti del nostro passato.

The third volume dedicated to materials and ongoing studies on Villa Maruffi, highlights the interest in the history of culture that flows from this structure and from the territory in which is, through the collection of stamps imprinted on bricks. From the contextualization and the analysis of those elements emerges the witness  of the dense network of villas that characterise the suburbs of Rome since antiquity, you follow the most intense phases of construction and decline, but you can reconstruct even more stories. Stories of the families that left their trademark, or of the owners who have inhabited the same structures, until the modern phase of discovery and ' extraction ' of ancient materials from the suburbium of Rome. Stories of people, activities, places, which are revealed to those who have the curiosity to look with deep interest even less obvious traces of our past.

The aim of this paper is a focus on the boundary role played over time by the city walls of Rome. The Republican walls ( the so called Servian Walls) are in fact a tangible, physical perimeter that separates the city from its nearest suburbs. This limit seems to get lost during the Imperial Age, when the limit of the city appears to consist only of its outermost houses.
The Aurelian walls, at the end of the third century AD, become instead a new, imposing city limit, not only with a defensive role, but also economic, which will last until the end of the nineteenth century and symbolizes the city itself of Rome.

This study presents the changes across time of the functional use of the periurban area of Roman Beirut. The eastern suburbs were poorly planned prior to the first century AD, during which the space was used for burial. Following this period, physical boundaries were erected that subdivided the area into plots used for agricultural, economic, and artisanal activities. Monumental buildings were not installed in this area until the end of the second century AD, when a sanctuary pertaining to the Heliopolitan cult was built on the coastal plain. The sanctuary was eventually destroyed in the fourth century AD. Several residential spaces then emerged in this area, but they were destroyed either during the earthquake of  AD 551 or at a later period. The suburban area was abandoned during the Middle Ages period, and it was not reconstructed until the Ottoman period.

Ce mémoire de master intitulé Le suburbium dans les cités des Gaules romaines cherche à interroger, par l’étude des sources historiques et archéologiques, la notion de périphérie urbaine durant l’Antiquité romaine. Ce travail nous a mené à faire un véritable point historiographique et définitionnel sur la question grâce à une analyse des textes, mais aussi de l’iconographie. Enfin, nous avons proposé de premières pistes de réflexion sur les marqueurs archéologiques, afin de faciliter la délimitation et l’examen du fonctionnement de cet espace encore trop peu étudié.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This master's thesis entitled Le suburbium dans les cités des Gaules romaines seeks to question, through the study of historical and archaeological sources, the notion of urban periphery during Roman antiquity. This work led us to make a real historiographical and definitional point on the question thanks to an analysis of the texts, but also of the iconography. Finally, we have proposed initial avenues of thought on archaeological markers, in order to facilitate the delimitation and examination of the functioning of this space still too little studied.

Il rinvenimento di un gruppo di vani semipogei presso il settore nord-orientale del Suburbio di Roma ripropone il tema della interpretazione di strutture realizzate in antico nel sottosuolo, che nel caso specifico  è ricondotto ad uno dei tanti piccoli agglomerati rurali, che insieme alle fattorie caratterizzavano il paesaggio arcaico ed alto-repubblicano dell'agro di Roma e degli altri centri limitrofi.
