Adamance Coray fut un homme de lettres attaché au mouvement du néoclacissisme, rejetant quasiment avec horreur le mouvement romantique naissant, quoique son propre psychisme révèle quelques exaltations de nature préromantique ou même romantique. Son éducation, ses expériences dans Paris révolutionnaire, enfin ses revendications idéologiques, tout cela l’orientait vers l’étude et l’admiration sans bornes de l’antiquité classique. Il est évident que sa vision esthétique s’imposa sur ses appréciations et sur son goût littéraire. Dans cette approche, je vais centrer mon analyse sur ses interventions s’inscrivant essentiellement dans le domaine de la critique littéraire, concernant tout d’abord sa longue dissertation autour de l’essence et de la fonction du genre romanesque qui figure en tant que préambule à l’édition des Éthiopiques de Héliodore, basée notamment sur le Traité de l’origine des romans de Pierre-Daniel Huet et sur la Poétique d’Aristote, puis ses opinions exprimées avec persistance dans sa Correspondance, visant la production littéraire et philologique de son temps, ses suggestions de lecture, des manuels à commander dans les écoles grecques, ses incitations multiples pour faire traduire telle ou telle œuvre étrangère en grec moderne (voir l’exemple suggestif de Tartuffe). Coray croit profondément à la valeur de l’acte de traduire, démarche qui acquiert pour lui la valeur du transvasement (métakenosès) tant voulu. De même, il croit profondément au caractère civilisateur des arts et tout particulièrement à l’influence bienfaisante de la musique et de l’art dramatique. Sa méfiance tardive exprimée notamment à l’égard des spectacles qu’on aurait pu juger comme légers, s’appuyant sur les opinions de St Évremond (sur l’opéra) et de J.-J. Rousseau, ne nie point, suivant mon analyse, sa croyance bien établie en la valeur éducative des arts et en l’occurrence du théâtre.

The aim of this study was to validate a translated version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) questionnaire in Spanish patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA). The WOMAC questionnaire and the SF-36 were administered to a sample of 269 patients on the waiting list for hip or knee replacement. We studied the convergent validity and the item-scale correlation using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and Spearman’s π. For the reliability study we used another sample of 58 patients who received the WOMAC twice within 15 days. The Pearson’s, Spearman’s π, and intraclass correlation coefficients were calculated. Internal consistency was measured by Cronbach’s α. The responsiveness study was carried out by resending the two questionnaires to all patients 6 months after surgical intervention; responsiveness was measured by means of the paired t-test, the effect size I and the standardised response mean. The Pearson’s coefficients for the convergent validity ranged from −0.52 to −0.63. The coefficients obtained for the item–scale correlation of the pain area were 0.74 or higher, 0.91 or higher for stiffness, and 0.61 or higher for function. When measuring the test–retest reliability, the coefficients ranged from 0.66 to 0.81. Internal consistency yielded a Cronbach’s α ranging from 0.81 to 0.93. The responsiveness showed an effect size I ranging from 1.5 to 2.2 in patients who underwent hip replacement; for those who underwent knee replacement the range was 1 to 1.8. The standardised response mean ranged from 1.3 to 1.9 for patients with hip OA; those with knee OA ranged from 0.8 to 1.5. The Spanish version of WOMAC is a valid, reliable and responsive instrument in patients with hip or knee OA.

“Words Are Signals”: Language, Translation, and Colonization in Brian Friel’s Translations

Abstract
The Irish playwright, Friel is among the most prominent contemporary writers. In his works he deals mainly with socio-cultural issues in Ireland. His 1980 play, Translations focuses on the problem of language and cultural colonization in Ireland. Hailed as a postcolonial work, the play is not limited to the depiction of the problem; it presents some suggestions and probable solutions to the problem, especially with a different look at the role and significance of “translation”. While showing a tangible picture of colonial struggles, it tries not to depict a one-sided picture of the problem. The present paper focuses on Friel’s different view toward Irish colonization and Irish cultural nationalism. The objective of the paper is to show how Friel looks differently at the function of language and the crucial role of “translation” in colonial struggles.

У истоков этого эллинистического возрождения стоял знаменитый иконоборец Иоанн Грамматик, а его племянник Лев Философ воспитал круг учеников и последователей, благодаря которым было создано собрание рукописей с произведениями Платона и неоплатоников. Эллинистический гуманизм этой эпохи, приближающийся к платонизму и секуляризму, несколько отходя от традиционного христианства, наиболее ярко отражен в творчестве Льва Философа и его ученика Льва Хиросфакта. Византийские эллинисты были увлечены античной культурой глубже, чем многие образованные их круга, балансируя на той грани, за которой, с точки зрения благочестивого христианина, начиналось «нечестие». Светская поэзия монахини Кассии, в чьих гномических эпиграммах звучат эллинистические мотивы, представляет собой пример более умеренного эллинизма. В то же время один из самых образованных людей той эпохи, патриарх Константинопольский Фотий, несмотря на живой интерес к античной культуре, смотрел на нее со строго православных позиций и в распространении идеала просвещенного эллинизма сыграл отрицательную роль. Особенно интересно мировоззрение Льва Хиросфакта, в чьих сочинениях явственно звучат не только неоплатонические, но и иконоборческие мотивы, несмотря на то, что Лев родился и жил после торжества иконопочитания. Творчество Хиросфакта является своего рода синтезом эллинизма IX в. и свидетельствует о распространении платонизма и выживании иконоборческих идей среди образованных византийцев той эпохи. Книга предназначена для специалистов по византийской литературе, патрологов, историков, а также всех интересующихся культурой Византии.

Title. Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia (EdFED) scale: cross-cultural validation of the Chinese versionAim.  This paper is a report of an assessment of the construct validity of the Chinese version of the Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia scale.Background.  The Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia scale has previously been translated and back-translated and to determine the equality of the Chinese and English versions. However, the construct validity of the Chinese version has not been investigated.Methods.  Participants (n = 477) were selected from residents with dementia in licensed long-term care facilities in Taiwan in 2006–2007. Data collectors received training before observing feeding for 2 days during lunch and dinner. Data were analysed using principal component analysis, Mokken scaling and correlation.Findings.  A two-factor structure was demonstrated for the 11 items of the Chinese version of the scale and six items conformed to a Mokken scale. The Chinese version of the scale correlated with external constructs such as weight and body mass index, as predicted by the unmet needs model.Conclusion.  A confirmatory factor analysis is needed to confirm that the Chinese version measures the same qualities, in the same proportions, and with the same factor structure as the original Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia scale.

The article is concerned with the problem of formation of the Shakespearean canon in the new Russian literature at the turn of the 18th–19th centuries. We define the Shakespearean canon as a corpus of original works by the British genius and adequate interpretations of his texts in theater, criticism, cinema, art, cultures of different countries and peoples.
The author analyzes Alexander Sumarokov’s adaptation of “Hamlet” (1748). It was a typical neoclassical play based on Pierre-Antoine de La Place’s translation of Shakespeare (“Théatre Anglois”, 1745–1748). However, in the author's opinion, it was Sumarokov who introduced “Hamlet” to the Russian theatrical and reading public.
The earliest mention of Shakespeare reached Russia via translations and re-translations of French and German publications. Even in the early 19th century his works would frequently be translated to Russian from French Classicist adaptations by Jean-François Ducis (1733–1816): “Lear” by Nikolay Gnedich and “Othello” by Ivan Velyaminov were published in 1808; Stepan Viskovatov translated “Hamlet” in 1811 and Petr Korsakov adapted “Macbeth” in 1815.
The influence of Shakespeare on Mikhail Muravyov is a good example of formation of the “cult of Shakespeare” and his canon in the late 18th century. Along with historian Nikolay Karamzin, Muravyov became one of the first serious admirers of Shakespeare and popularizers of his canon in Russia. An interesting example is Vasily Zhukovsky’s studies of Shakespeare’s legacy; his poetic practice paved the way for Russian translators of Shakespeare’s works.
From the author’s point of view, Alexander Pushkin remains the most outstanding representative of Russian Shakespeareanism. Pushkin set himself a goal to create a national literature in Russia. “In the manner of our Father Shakespeare” Pushkin wrote his tragedy “Boris Godunov” (1825) and adopted Shakespeare’s principles of play-writing especially when he was depicting the history and characters. Pushkin followed Shakespeare paying much attention to the issues of authority and its influence on man. It was not an imitation, but rather evolution of his own creative approach that was evident in his poem “Angelo” (1833), an adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure”. Pushkin’s Shakespearianism changed the paradigm of the evolution of the new Russian literature in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Insomnia Severity Index is psychometrically sound in measuring perceived insomnia severity. However, it has had very limited application in non-White populations.Methods.  An instrument validation study was carried out between October 2008 and April 2009. The Insomnia Severity Index was translated into Chinese using Brislin’s model and administered to a convenience sample of 585 older Chinese people recruited from three community centres for elders. Other instruments were also administered, including the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Geriatric Depression Scale.Results.  Cronbach’s alpha of the Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index was 0·81, with item-to-total correlations in the range of 0·34–0·67. Construct validity was supported by its moderate relationship with the Chinese Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and sleep efficiency. The Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index also indicated more severe level of insomnia in older people who reported depressed mood on the Geriatric Depression Scale. Discriminant validity was supported as the Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index could discriminate poorer sleepers from normal sleepers. Exploratory factor analysis identified a two-factor structure for the Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index in measuring the severity and impacts of insomnia on the Chinese older people.Conclusion.  The Chinese version of the Insomnia Severity Index is a culturally-relevant and psychometrically-sound instrument for assessing severity and impact of insomnia in Chinese community-dwelling older people. In today's societies, pressures from the idea of thinness are omnipresent and lead to a corporal dissatisfaction with an excessive preoccupation of the body's image. It seems important to have, in France, a device that can evaluate the corporal dissatisfaction degree, for the reason that the troubles of the body's image is a common diagnostical category to the anorexia and bulimia (DSM IV, 1994). Cooper et al. (1987) have developed one-dimensional questionnaire of 34 items in order to measure the worries towards the weight and the shape of the body, called the "Body Shape Questionnaire" (BSQ). Its concurrent validity has been shown with the using of the corporal dissatisfaction under-scale of the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI; Garner et Olmsted, 1984) and the using of the diagnostical questionnaire: Eating Attitude Test (EAT; Garner et Garfinkel, 1979).
