PREFACE

First of all, thanks God for helping me and give me chance to finishing my English
paper assignment entitled “Critical Video Review” And I would like to say thank you to Mr.
Dr. H. Syaukani. M., Ed. Adm. as t lecturer that always guided me in completing this paper,
so i can make this task on time.

The author wants to say thank’s to Mr. Dr. H. Syaukani. M., Ed. Adm. for her
explanation about Qualitative Research. This paper will discuss about two journal, The
Effectiveness of the English Conversation to Improve Students’ Speaking Skill and Using
English Movie as an Attractive Strategy to Teach Senior High School Students English as A
Foreign Langauge. Criticism and constructive suggestions from our readers are desirable that
this paper be better. Finally, the authors thank’s to the reader for the attention.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

A. Background
As the student of university, thinking critically is important to find
out the detail of anything example like criticize the book, journal, or article.
The purpose of that is to make the student can improve the way of thinking
with good knowledge and find out intern information of anything. This
paper is criticizing the two journals which use experimental method. The
reason why chose criticize these two journals is the lecturer asked to find
out the journal which use quantitative, experimental and action class as the
methodology of the research. Beside that the writer would like to know
further about experimental research because it so interesting and as the
students of teachers training faculty, the experiment of new strategy in
learning English is so important. So this critical journal review is crucial
whether to summarize the content, to find out the advantages and
disadvantages, and to get knowledge of experimental research.

CHAPTER II
SUMMARY

A. Journal 1
1. Purpose
The study was aimed at examining the effectiveness of the English
conversation to improve students 'speaking skills focusing on whether
effective English conversation in speaking skills and how is the
effectiveness of the English conversation to improve students' speaking
skills. The research was designed in a pre-experimental pre-test and post-
test research, where the research only applied the English conversation to
the experimental group that consisted of 28 students.
2. Literature Review
According Robin (2013), language is the key aspect of human
intelligence. Language is a system of conventional spoken, manual, or
written symbols by means of which human beings, as members of a social
group and participants in its culture, express themselves.
This research related to the thesis by Ishrat Aamer entitled “The
Important of Speaking Skill for EFL Learners”. This thesis is telling about
English language has become an international language.
3. Method of Journal
To know the effectiveness of the English conversation to improve
students' speaking skills the research use the design of the study was
pre-experimental methods with one class which established the regular
instruction to one group by the treatment of English conversation. The
group has been given the pre-test before treatment, and after the
treatment the group would be given a post-test to find out the
effectiveness of the treatment.
4. Finding and Discussion
The finding of the study was a description of the effectiveness of the
English conversation to improve students' speaking skills. The data of

pre-test and post-test was gained from the experimental group by using
English conversation which consists of 28 students and the score
interval that was used to determine students' speaking skills was 4-15.
So, the minimum score was 4 and the maximum score was 15.
Based on the data gained, the highest score on pre-test was 10 and
the lowest. score was 4 with the mean score 7.21, standard deviation was
3.16 and variance was 9.95, while on post-test, the highest score was 15
and the lowest score was 6 with the mean score was 9.25, standard
deviation was 2.77 and variance was 7.67.
5. Conclusion
The result of this study was that the mean score of post-test was
higher than the pre-test and the result of t-test by using paired sample t-
test showed that the significance value level was lower than .05. It
means that the English conversation was significantly effective in
speaking skills for the eighth grader of MTs. The Masonic Countries in
the academic year 2017-2018.

B. Journal 2
1. Purpose
The researcher wants to reveal how to implement English movies
in teaching English as foreign Language to senior high school students.
English as a Foreign Language is implemented as the compulsory subject
to learn in senior high school in Indonesia. Moreover, using English
movies to teach English can be the answer. In the application, the teacher
can use English movies to teach four skills. They include listening,
speaking, and also writing skills
2. Literature Review
As stated by Agustin in her paper titled Competence, Process, and
Assessment Standards: Towards autonomy in ELT, there are four literacy
levels implemented in Curriculum Based Competence. They are
performative, functional, informational, and epistemic level. Performative

level is implemented in Elementary School, whereas functional level is
applied in Junior High School. She goes on to say that the informational
level is implemented in Senior high school whereas epistemic level.
3. Method of study
This study used experimental, a type of research design which
included experimental and control group without random sampling. There
are two groups that taken for this study. Teacher use English movies to
teach four skills. They include listening, speaking, and also writing skills.
By using English movies, teacher can also teach grammar and introduce
new vocabulary for students
4. Finding and Discussion
Understanding the goal to achieve in Senior high school grade and
general characteristics of the students, teachers can start to find, choose
and apply an appropriate strategy to apply in teaching EFL to Senior high
school students. One strategy that can be implemented in teaching EFL to
Senior high school students is by using English movies. According to
Louis Pugliese, a lecturer in Educational Psychology at California State
University, Northridge, the film is an exiting way to learn English, since it
gives not only the matter of pronunciation, but also a lot of other for

English as a foreign language is implemented as the compulsory
subject to learn in senior high schools in Indonesia. The aim of the
implementation is to achieve the informational level of literacy which is
expected from students to be able to use English to access accumulated
knowledge and use English in informal and formal contexts.
Unfortunately, beyond the implementation, the fact that not all pupils
enjoy learning English occurs. Besides the students should face a new
language for them to learn, the existing teaching style which merely
transfers knowledge constributes to the stressful environment in the class.
By using English movies to teach English is fun. In the application,
the teacher can use English movies to teach four language skills. They

include reading, listening, speaking, and also writing skills. By using
English movies, teacher can also teach grammar and introduce new
vocabulary to students. Furthermore, the belief that everyone loves
watching movies strengthens the teacher’s confidence to use English
movies as an attractive strategy to teach English as a foreign language to
senior high school students.

CHAPTER III
DISCUSSION

A. Unique and Update (Kekhasan dan Kemuktakhiran)

1. Unique
Both of the journal conducted the research on improve students’
vocabulary. Journal 1 use quantitative method either journal 2. The
researcher on those journals applied the strategy to improve the
students’ vocabulary. Therefore the journal 1 and 2 use experimental
design which there are consist of pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Thus
the result of pre-test and post-test will be compared and analyze whether
the strategy succeed improve students’ vocabulary.
2. Update
Journal 1 and journal 2 are similar doing research on vocabulary,
both of researchers wants to do experiment of their strategy to the
students as the sample and observe the result. The update thing on those
researches is journal 1 and 2 use the current and new strategy to improve
the students. Therefore the research result is interesting and build
education field.

B. Advantages and Disadvantages

Journal 1
1. Advantages
After read this journal. We can fine that the abstract of this
journal is good, it represented the content of journal about introduction,
method, sample, finding, and conclusion. The writer present many
theories and explanation about vocabulary which useful as the
foundation of the study. The researcher also present the table of pre-test
and post-test result which can be seen and read by the reader to know
whether there are the differences between pre-test and post-test.

2. Disadvantages
There is a language in the explanation is too complex. The
examples of the explanation is hard to understand for the listener. The
research in applying the English conversation in the teaching and
learning process, teachers should pay more attention to the students'
skills in making conversations with their friends. The implementation of
the English conversation in the teaching and learning process also makes
students become more active in the classroom. We have more warming
class by implementing Conversation.

Journal 2
1. Advantages
The abstract of the journal represented the purpose of research,
method, finding, and conclusion so the reader could understand the journal
with only read the abstract. The title of journal is clear and understandable;
it easy to understand from reading the title, the reader could know what is
the study about. The explanation of problem of research, method, finding,
and conclusion is written briefly so the criticizer could summarize it
easily.
2. Disadvantages
There is no body notes or foot notes in journal. The method of research in
this journal is written briefly, it easy to understand but the criticizer need
specific information of the method. The finding of the research is written
briefly, the writer not present the result widely. There is no table of the
finding result so the reader must read the paragraph, and it is to complicate
to read, much better if there is a table so the reader could read it directly.

D. Recommendation

From the both of journal the writers have presented the research result
with good report. The reviewer suggest if the first journal is more easy to read
than the second journal. Because the writer in the first journal write the
experts of the theories, and he also write the table of instrument from the data.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION

Both of journal are discussing about speaking, how to build up the students
English speaking in the class, the way to improve their speaking, and add more
speaking skill with the learning strategies which has been explained in the both of
journal. The important thing is both of journal use experimental method, the first
journal use pre-experimental research, and second journal use quasi experimental
research. This Critical Journal Review is reviewing the journal, summarize of
both journal and find the advantages and disadvantages of them. We can found the
differences between the journal and the similarity. Thus, this critical journal is
important to the students of university to know whether they are able to criticize
the journal and to know about speaking.
