Introduction
Goal
• This workshop compares and contrasts results using large deflection
with and without activation of Line Search on the same shell model as
Workshop 01.1.

Model Description
• Shell disk sliced into 3 pieces
• 2 planes of symmetry
• Linear steel material
• Meshed with 3D shell elements
• Fixed support at circular end
• 0.05 MPa pressure on the internal surface

Project Startup
Create the Project

• Start an ANSYS Workbench session

• Use File > Open… to browse for existing file
“SNLWS01.2-Line-Search.wbpz”
File name: “WS01.2-Line-Search”
Save as type: Project Files (*.wbpj)

Project Startup
Edit the Engineering Data Cell and verify the linear material properties (adjust
the Units setting if necessary)
Close the Engineering Data tab and double-click on the Model cell to open
Mechanical

Units
Set Units
• From the Home tab, select Units and, if it is not already set, select
Metric (mm, kg, N, s, ...)

Model Review
This model is the same as
WS01.1 – Shell Disk

Check the Mesh and the

Boundary Conditions

Solve – Line Search = Off
Note the Analysis Settings specifications:
• Auto Time Stepping = Program Controlled
• Large Deflection = On
• Line Search = Off

Run the Solution

7 © 2019 ANSYS, Inc.

Solution Information
Set Solution Output to Force Convergence and note the number of iterations

The model converges after 10 iterations

Solve – Line Search = On
Select Analysis Settings and set Line Search to On

Solve of the second Mechanical model

9 © 2019 ANSYS, Inc.
Solution Information
Recheck the Force Convergence curve as well as the number of iterations
• The solver used 3 iterations instead of 10 to converge to a solution

Solution Information
Check the Solver Output to confirm use of the Line Search Parameter

Conclusion
Line Search has virtually increased the radius of the convergence to produce
convergence in far fewer iterations
