The tropical rainforest has the most abundant vegetation on Earth, with trees able to grow over 40 meters tall to reach sunlight through four main layers. The rainforest is threatened by mining, logging, cattle ranching, and peasant farming. Mining and logging have cleared vast areas for minerals and timber. Five million hectares of forest are lost annually to logging. Sustainable practices like agroforestry, selective logging, and protected forest reserves can restrict harm if logging only occurs for trees above a certain height. The main driver of deforestation is human settlement and farming using slash and burn techniques, resulting in over 500,000 square kilometers of additional forest loss between 1991 and 2000.

Tropical rainforests are located in hot and wet equatorial regions with heavy rainfall, such as Southeast Asia, Africa, South America, and the Pacific Islands. The vegetation forms a dense canopy with various layers and includes hardwood trees, shrubs, vines, and mosses. These regions experience a hot and humid climate with rainfall throughout the year, supporting the growth of the rich biodiversity found within, including many monkeys, apes, birds, snakes, insects, and large cats.
