This paper discusses the importance of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and strategies to guide the implementation of QFD in the context of Ethiopian industrial sector. Studies on the comparative advantages, preconditions, and contextual factors of implementing QFD revealed that firms comparatively improved quality of products, minimized costs, and shortened product development time as the result of introduction of the QFD to their system of operation. Studies in the context of Ethiopia also revealed that QFD has not been well introduced to the Ethiopian industries; as the result, they are incapable of competing with other industries in the local and global markets, and have faced problems related to cost and quality of products. Therefore, this paper argues that QFD knowledge transfer to developing countries, in general, and to Ethiopian industries, in particular, yields advantages to alleviate the problems related to cost and quality. Preconditions such as top management support,...

Research Article Transport is the relocation of people, creatures and properties from one position to another. Types of transport embrace air, land (rail and road), water, cable, pipeline and space. Transport signifies one of the most significant people's actions worldwide. The transport plays immeasurable elements of economy. The showground can be alienated into infrastructure, vehicles and operations. Transportation is important since it permits trade between persons that implies for the growth of societies. Transport arrangement entails of the fixed connections such as railways, airways, roads, waterways, canals and pipelines. In other hands, the terminals such as airports, railway stations, bus stations, warehouses, trucking terminals, refueling depots (including fueling docks and fuel stations) and seaports. To inculcate the studies with previous research study, it has considered the previous works conducted in Indian Automotive Research Association (2008) with the objective of lad transportation classification in units of Micro Bus, Mini Bus, Midi Bus and Standard Bus. The study conducted in this research wos focussed with the interest that will be concentrated in the units of intercity transport midi bus, specifically with seat capacity 24 which is modified locally by bus body builders [1]. This study also focuses on the same fassion on the transports of built ISUZ NPR to allivate the ergonomically health and safety issues existance. Abstract Among the many public transportation modes found in Ethiopia, buses are the most popular means of transport both in rural and urban areas of the country. The locally built buses are becoming common where they can be fabricated in local garages of big cities of Ethiopia. These busses are built locally where usually imported trucks cabin and loading decks are dismounted and the trucks are converted to passengers' buses adding passenger's seats and canopies with related accessories. Nevertheless, so much complaints are heard on the design of the air conditioning and seats framework material and dimension of these Isuzu NPR buses locally named' Kitkit' where passengers are facing discomfort, fatigue, stress and health related issues. A descriptive survey research method was employed in order to assess the current status of passenger comfort in minibus around Addis Ababa city. This study attempted to show the results and findings based on the secondary and primary data obtained from different sources. Subjective method had been carried out in the form of questionnaire. In this study the seat and anthropometric dimension measurements were considered as objective methods requiring the output in the form of data interpretation from the measuring device.

The level of quality expectation of the products within the international customers are high, however the case company, the quality control system is not as strong as it is supposed to be. The company is not using statistical quality control tools except check sheet. Because of this, there is significant amount of rejection of products and has resulted on low economic benefit. The products with defects do not qualify for international market rather whenever there is defect on product; it is pushed to local market which has impact on supply chain performance generally. The case study has shown that, the quality of shirt could be improved to the extent of making the defect zero if the statistical quality control tools are applied properly. The case study team has shown the methodology and the sequence of the application of the statistical quality control tools and basically systematic application of DMAIC following with check sheet, process flow diagram, fishbone, Pareto Chart, histogram, control limits and process capability enhancement could bring significant quality improvement in the case company. This paper showed the direct relationship of statistical quality control tools application and supply chain management. Mathematical modeling of impact of quality control over the supply chain performance and cost benefit analysis has been used as major methodology and result discussions and conclusions are drown and recommendation is also forwarded.

Ergonomics is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries and other musculoskeletal disorders , which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability [1]. The improvement of musculoskeletal health at work is one of the most important objectives of ergonomics According to the International Ergonomics Association (IEA, 2003) Physical er-gonomics issues include working postures, materials handling, repetitive movements, Work-related musculoskeletal disorders, workplace layout, safety and health Musculoskeletal health can be maintained by controlling for risk factors. Biomechanical Hazards, genetic predisposition, morphological disadvantages, all interact in the precipitation of work-related musculoskeletal injuries, but it is only Feasible to control for the biomechanical and psychosocial factors Physical exertion in the workplace can result in the precipitation of work-related musculoskeletal Injuries. Studies have shown that posture, range of motion, force repetition (OML, 2011). The goal of ergonomics is to maximize the productivity and effi

Preconditions such as top management support, provision of resources, establishment of multidiscipline team, and adequate knowledge of QFD are essential for effective implementation of QFD. Ethiopia has made efforts for transferring of several initiatives such as the Kaizen and Business Process Reengineering (BPR) to the industries. Consecutively, this can help as a grassroots to implement other tools such as QFD. Having studied the existing technology transfer practices and made a SWOT analysis, the paper proposes a QFD knowledge transfer framework and implementation procedure which can be used as helpful input by the industries, practitioners, and researchers.

Background: Standardization is considered as a technology transfer channel while standards are as enablers and facilitators for research. There is a large potential for standards and standardization to promote innovation for policy makers. The aim of standardization is producing documents "by consensus and approved by a recognized body, that provides, for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context ,particularly in researches and innovation. Problem statement: In general, standards and standardization process are not the concern of many Ethiopian activities as they have less understanding. The researches and innovation studies undertaken in many countries, especially in Ethiopia are not based on standards and common agreements of research ISO. The researcher out puts or innovation ideas are not with consideration of standards that keeps the researchers and innovators intellectual property rights (IPR). Simply, academic oriented and padlocked the final results diffusion process enforcement. The role of standards in researches and innovation has known hardly by many Ethiopian researchers and innovators. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate standards and the relationship between research and standardization is examined indicating that standardization as a technology transfer channel and standards as enablers and facilitators for quality research and innovation output and result management. The other study area focuses on the difficult but promising issue of transferring IPR of researches and innovation into standards, to show how this benefits both for IPR holders and standards implementers. The study also aims at a new issue of Ethiopia thematic area on the role of standards and standardization in research and innovation quality processes. Generally, the study has aimed at standards impact on research and innovation quality. Methodology: This study, in order to come up with the conclusion and findings, it has used data from existing body of knowledge and interviews of researchers in universities and some innovation principles at industries. The research also obtained at from questionnaires in addition to document reviews through face-to face, questionnaire paper distribution, e-mail, telephone and twitter. Findings: The study in literature revealed that the researches were conducted in line with the role of standards for quality researches and innovation has been found undermined. The respondents of the questionnaire and the data sources indicated that there are less consideration of standardizations for research and innovation process. This directed the violation of IPR of an innovator or researcher even though there is a policy at national and international level. Therefore, this research has attempted to show the importance of standards, the relationship the standards has with IPR and its impact on quality researches and innovation being as a motivator for the actors. It also addressed how the society are benefited from the standards of the research and innovation. Originality/Value: The research merely conducted reconciled with literature review and substantiated with primary data sources so that the work has introduced new areas of finding related to role of standards in research and innovation, in particular for the our country. Conclusion: The finding of this study is just as a highlight for the future work studies and motivation of the policy makers like Ethiopian Standard Agencies. Further researches and training has to be conducted on this area.

The reduction of loan processing cycle time gives relief in a lot of financial and non-financial activities to customers and to companies. Thus, the purpose of this research is to minimize and analyze the loan processing cycle time of Development Bank of Ethiopia so that processing cycle time gets crushed. Project owners get frustrated when their loan application takes longer processing time. As the loan processing cycle time gets longer and longer, project owners or promoters lose enormous amount of money and energy waiting for the loan approval day. Thus, the study was conducted to improve this delay of loan processing time using data from the Bank and ARENA simulation software. In modeling this system, an ARENA software simulation model was developed, verified, and validated to determine the daily loan processing cycle time and potential problem areas for the various request levels in the case company to shorten the length of processing time. The ARENA simulation software used to improve the current delay of the loan processing as if they work in real worlds. It has helped the analysis to simulate and showed how it works in the real world. Based on the results of this study, it was found that the average loan processing cycle time is more than 45 days. After analyzing alternative scenarios using ARENA simulation software, it was obtained that the loan processing cycle time to be less than 39 days.

This paper aimed at improving the production of a household utensils manufacturing company with flow shop scheduling heuristics. To achieve the planned production volume, a company needs to establish an optimal production sequences. A household utensils manufacturer in Ethiopia was our case company to investigate. We have studied the production sequence of a flat cooking pan, where one packed set of a flat cooking pan comprises seven diametrically ordered flat cook pans. Three production scenarios were developed based on the production line constraints of the case company. Among the various flow shop scheduling heuristics, Campbell, Dudek and Smith (CDC), and Nawaz, Enscor and Ham (NEH) methods were applied. In all production scenarios the applied heuristics yields an optimal production sequences with considerable reduction of a makespan. The optimal production sequences improved the annually planned production volume by more than 22%. Moreover, the paper discusses the performance of the applied heuristics.
