Little is known about the mental health impact of having a family member or friend infected with COVID-19. Thus, the purpose of this study was to conduct a comprehensive national assessment of the psychological impact of COVID-19 infection, hospitalization, or death among family members and friends. A multi-item valid and reliable questionnaire was deployed online to recruit adults in the U.S. A total of 2797 adult Americans without a history of COVID-19 infection participated in the study and reported that they had a family member or friend infected with (54%), hospitalized due to (48%), or die (36%) of COVID-19 infection. Symptoms of depression, anxiety, or both (i.e., psychological distress) were statistically significantly higher among those who had family members/friends infected, hospitalized, or die due to COVID-19. Also, this study found that the greater the number of family members/friends affected by COVID-19, or the more severe the COVID-19 infection outcome (i.e., hospit...

Consumer e-commerce extends the marketplace of traditional business and brings in business opportunities in online retailing and service. As a consequence of intensive competition among online vendors, the need to capture customers has become a top priority. Thanks to the wide penetration of Internet, the online consumer group now consists of individuals with diverse cultural values and backgrounds. In the context of ethnic culture, we explore the ways a Web site may attract and accommodate ethnic consumers. Drawing upon existing literature in culture and Web Information System success, we develop a Web-based intercultural accommodation model. This model offers a theoretical explanation of online ethnic consumers’ behavioral intention to use e-commerce Web site. The conceptual model recognizes the potential roles of ethnicity attributes of individual consumers as well as the use of ethnic pertaining Web site designs in accommodating ethnic consumers. Future study that validates the ...

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is gaining momentum as more and more people increasingly are using technology tools and devices for their daily activities. Users expect highly effective and easy-tolearn interfaces and developers and designers now realize the crucial role user interface (UI) plays. HCI and System Usability design have greater significance in media use as usability problems can adversely affect the large population of users depending on the overall usability of system design and UI design. This study was conducted to get rich and detailed feedback of users’ personal experiences and usability of Websites. This was achieved by a different approach of using eye-tracking methodology in conjunction with usability software for usability testing. The study gave rich information of quantitative data from eye-tracking and usability software for better analysis of products.

Emergency incidents interrupt socio-economic systems and cause significant loss of human life and property. To date, there is a dearth of empirical research that investigates the key organizational capabilities that impact incident response outcomes. Through the lens of capability literature, we identify and contend that information systems capabilities and human capabilities jointly determine response functional competency, which in turn shapes the response process performance. Further we identify the major sources of these two important response capabilities. We validate the research model using survey data that is collected from 119 fire chiefs and find strong support to the research model. The current study confirms the imperative roles of information systems capabilities and human capabilities, and it therefore contributes to the emergency response literature. Findings that are reported also help incident response organizations to prioritize their investment and training resour...

Despite the extensive usage of the internet, little is known about internet addiction among Americans during the pandemic. A valid and reliable questionnaire was deployed online via MTurk to recruit a national sample of adult Americans to understand the nature and extent of internet addiction. A total of 1305 individuals participated in the study where the majority were males (64%), whites (78%), non-Hispanic (70%), married (72%), 18–35 years old (57%), employed full time (86%), and with a Bachelor’s degree or higher (83%). The prevalence of internet addiction was distributed as no addiction (45%), probable addiction or risk of addiction (41%), and definite or severe addiction (14%). More than a fourth of the population had depression (28%) or anxiety (25%). Despite adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, definite/severe internet addiction was strongly predictive of depression, anxiety, and psychological distress in multiple regression analyses. Those who were probably addic...

The shift to a knowledge-based economy results largely from developments in information and communications technologies. Knowledge-based economies offer huge opportunities for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop entirely new high-value products and services, add value to existing products and services, reduce costs, develop new export markets, and add value to existing activities. Implicit promises include access to world markets, low-cost entry into new markets, and the ability to gain efficiencies in business processes. However, these promises may be illusory for most SMEs. Technological, organizational, and marketing hurdles are also making it more difficult for SMEs to succeed in knowledge-based economies. This chapter identifies those major factors that are hindering the success of SMEs in knowledge-based economies. The chapter then goes on to suggest a set of guidelines to make SMEs succeed in this new knowledge-based society.

One of the key factors that distinguishes the intelligent business enterprise of the 21st century is the emphasis on knowledge and information. Unlike businesses of the past, the fast, high-tech, and global emphasis of businesses today requires the ability to capture, manage, and utilize knowledge and information in order to improve efficiency, better serve customers, manage the competition, and keep pace with never-ending changes. Knowledge management is an important means by which organizations can better manage information and, more importantly, knowledge. Unlike other techniques, knowledge management is not always easy to define because it encompasses a range of concepts, management tasks, technologies, and practices, all of which come under the umbrella of the management of knowledge. This chapter takes a broad view of the topic of knowledge management and aims to provide a comprehensive overview of knowledge management — the technologies, processes, and concepts involved, and ...

Over the last decade, a significant number of companies have implemented e-business solutions because an investment in e-business technologies provides the promise of a competitive advantage through lower transaction costs and the integration of processes. Many of these companies have experienced failures, a few have closed down, and only a few have succeeded in achieving the objectives. Studies undertaken to examine the reasons for these failures have highlighted that most of these companies could not handle change. One of the major challenges with the implementation of e-business solutions is managing change. A successful e-transformation represents the greatest value-creation potential for any company. In this chapter, I present a change management framework that suggests how firms can manage their transition to e-business and prepare them for e-transformation. The change management framework may provide managers or change agents with structured and measurable implementation tool...

Math-Towers is a collaborative mathematics environment for pupils in grades 7 to 9. Using a fantasy adventure game context, students are presented with a mathematical challenge, given online tools for working on the problem, and provided with a messaging system by which they may exchange ideas and partial solutions. This paper presents the philosophy behind the design of Math-Towers and, using a complexity science framework, explores the extent to which it has been successful in meeting goals. The technical and social problems encountered and revisions made to address these are also described.

Healthcare organizations are facing many challenges in the 21st Century due to changes taking place in global healthcare systems. Spiraling costs, financial constraints, increased emphasis on accountability and transparency, changes in education, growing complexities of biomedical research, new partnerships in healthcare and great advances in IT suggest that a predominant paradigm shift is occurring. This shift is necessitating a focus on interaction, collaboration and increased sharing of information and knowledge which is in turn leading healthcare organizations to embrace the techniques of Knowledge Management (KM) in order to create and sustain optimal healthcare outcomes. This chapter describes the importance of knowledge management systems for healthcare organizations and provides an overview of knowledge management technologies and tools that may be used by healthcare organizations.

As a major medium for information transmission, Internet plays an important role in diffusing and spreading news on web. Some governments attach great importance and pay lot of effort trying to detect, track the development of events and forecast emergency on internet. On the basis of the researches in the field of topic detection and tracking, we proposed a model for hot topic discovery that would pick out hot topics by automatically detecting, clustering and weighting topics on the websites within a time period. We also introduced a topic index approach in following the growth of topics, which is useful to analyze and forecast the development of topics on web.

As more and more organizations are using web sites for communication with their users, it is becoming imperative to examine web site design for usability design principles. A website may make perfect sense to the developers, but may not serve the users effectively due to poor usability design. The Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is gaining momentum, therefore, effectiveness and usability of website design is becoming significant. This usability study was conducted to test the effectiveness of an online magazine website and its subscription service to deliver the content it promises to deliver by assessing user interaction with a site. The usability test was conducted using eye-tracking methodology in conjunction with usability software for usability testing of an online magazine website.

The influence of information technology (IT) is exceeding the providing of financial and operating support to including strategic initiatives in knowledge management and long-range planning. IT is being used to facilitate customer and supplier involvement in designing specialized product offerings, implementing process improvements, enhancing manufacturing flexibility, and controlling manufacturing operations. Together, these advances are enabling firms to customize their product offerings mass customization (MC) and marketing at prices close to those quoted by traditional mass producers. While much research on MC has been reported in the literature, empirical studies investigating the impact of IT on creating cooperative and integrative relationships with customers and suppliers and the impacts of these relationships on the level of MC, are sparse and represent a missing link in manufacturing research. Using data collected from 220 manufacturers, this study finds that firms with hi...

As universities worldwide have started using e-learning systems for their program delivery, the effectiveness and usability design of e-learning systems are becoming significant. E-learning researchers and practitioners have been examining the effectiveness and usability of e-learning systems to understand whether human computer interaction (HCI) usability standards have a direct impact on student interactions and learning. The study aims to assist instructors, instructional designers, and other practitioners in identifying the effectiveness of HCI usability factors in e-learning systems. The methodologies adopted for the study include heuristic evaluation, a usability survey questionnaire, a cognitive walkthrough experiment, and think-aloud and co-participant testing. The study is still in progress, but preliminary results indicate different learning styles and group dynamics played an important role in usability testing.

Electronic commerce (E-Commerce) has been the world’s fastest growing industry and has made a big impact on businesses. The impact of e-commerce on industry, businesses and firms’ competitive advantage has been phenomenal. Various business models have evolved in last few years. But, despite of this, the business value returned by e-business environment is being viewed with increasing skepticism by researchers and practitioners. How does e-commerce framework enhance business value? What are the different factors where business value can be measured? These are the kinds of questions addressed in our chapter.

Offshore IT outsourcing has been gaining acceptance among corporations as a mainstream alternative to in-house operations. Various studies conducted over the last 10 years have shown that outsourcing allows firms to reduce high overhead costs and improve productivity, contribute flexibility, and thus improve overall performance of the firm. However, offshore IT outsourcing brings new challenges and risks. The skeptics believe that outsourcing may weaken the local business competitiveness of the region, investors’ confidence in investing in local businesses, and may create a spiral effect on economic indicators such as unemployment, enrollment in schools, living styles, housing, and construction, etc. Little deliberate research has been conducted to date. This study investigates the macro- and socio-economic consequences of offshore IT outsourcing in the United States using a system dynamics model. The research finds significant effects perceived and experienced by IS professionals. ...

The key to competitiveness in most industries has moved beyond the traditionally confined single organization. In today’s global competitive business environment, competitiveness is heavily influenced by the ability of the multiple organizations in a supply chain to synchronize and integrate their business activities and processes. Supply chain integration, (SCI) which links the activities, functions, processes, and systems of a firm with its customers and suppliers, can reduce uncertainty, enhance responsiveness, reduce costs, and improve customer service. Empirical studies have explored SCI and reported that information technology (IT) is a key ingredient for the success of the integrated supply chain. While the research on SCI has been reported in OM literature, empirical studies that investigate the impact of different levels of IT utilization (ITU) – strategic, operational, and infrastructural - on SCI are not available. This research also explores the impact of top management ...

Electronic voting—the use of computers or computerized voting equipment to cast and tabulate and tally ballots in an election in a trustable manner—is a pillar of e-Government. The DynaVote voting protocol system proposed by Cetinkaya and Koc (2007) is assumed secure and practicable on a network. However, the DynaVote e-Voting protocol does not completely protect the voting counter against impersonated votes, especially when the pseudo-Vote identities are known by the wrong voter or compromised by authorities. To address this problem, a prototype called improved DynaVote e-Vote protocol was designed to protect the counter from anomalies associated with counting impersonated votes (multiple votes) in the same election. This was achieved by introducing biometric fingerprint and pseudo voter identities (PVID) encryption for each voter during voter registration via online or data mining of population data containing fingerprint biometrics. Furthermore, fingerprint reader and RSA public ...

The e-commerce revolution has affected all organizations. Of particular interest is its effect on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), because we can observe an interesting duality, where these companies are most likely to benefit from the opportunities afforded by e-commerce (because through e-commerce, it is possible to level the playing field), and yet they appear to be slowest in embracing many of these e-commerce possibilities. On several social and economic grounds, SMEs are of overwhelming importance in most of the Asia Pacific/Pacific region. In fact, they comprise well over 90% of all enterprises in this region and provide employment for over half of the region’s workforce (Wattanapruttipaisan, 2002; APEC, 2001). Typically, the SME sector accounts for upwards of 90% of all firms outside the agricultural sector of East and Southeast Asia, and of Japan as well (Alphonso, 2001; Regnier, 2000; Tambunan, 2000; Wattanapruttipaisan, 2002; A Report Prepared for Asia Pacific F...

The business environment of the 21st century require organizations to respond quickly to market demands and thus traditional organization structures and strategy are no longer capable of sustaining the needs of this relentless pace. New forms of organizations in the form of virtual organization (VO) hold promise in the network world. Several organizations worldwide have already been experimenting virtual organizations’ structures and processes. These new virtual structures and processes, however, will require newer strategies to succeed. This paper attempts to highlight some strategy and structural issues of a VO. The study is conceptual in nature and inferences have been drawn from existing literature and practices.

Consumer e-commerce extends the marketplace of traditional business and brings in business opportunities in online retailing and service. As a consequence of intensive competition among online vendors, the need to capture more customers has become crucial. The consumer group is under a huge change due to demographic shift and immigration laws. Population of minorities has dramatically increased suggesting a growing buying power of ethnic groups. To effectively attract ethnic consumers into consumer e-commerce Web sites, we propose the Web-based intercultural accommodation model. Drawing upon literature in linguistic, sociology, and Web information system success, this model offers a theoretical explanation of online ethnic consumers’ behavioral intention to use e-commerce Web site. The conceptual model recognizes the potential roles of ethnicity attributes of individual consumers as well as the use of ethnic pertaining Web site designs in accommodating ethnic consumers. The movement toward electronic government (e-government) is rapidly advancing as nations exploit new electronic means of communication such as the Internet. The e-government transformation process can be and often is seriously hindered when initiatives are disjointed and uncoordinated by an overall strategy. Although many countries are creating e-government services, there is no documentation of an e-government framework to guide the process. Guidelines for implementation of e-government are also missing from the literature. The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize a framework that could guide the transformation process toward an e-government model. The paper also suggests various actions needed for e-government implementation.

New technologies, increasingly demanding customers, new aggressive competitors, and innovations in products and value now characterize our current competitive environment. Organizations of the 21st century have no choice but to invest in new technologies, especially knowledge management tools to enhance their services and products in order to meet the demands of today’s information-driven, globally competitive marketplace. Knowledge embedded in systems, brains and technology has always been the key to economic development. However, knowledge management is increasingly being viewed as a strategy to leverage a firm’s knowledge and best practices to serve customers and to be competitive. Several organizations have already started experimenting with knowledge management initiatives to capture and capitalize on knowledge assets and thereby claim the enormous benefits afforded by such endeavors, including improved profitability and transformation of their businesses into new generation bu...
