Very exotic shapes can be assumed for the nuclei at high angular momenta. Their study has become possible with the advent of the last generation high-resolution γ-ray spectrometers. In this talk results are presented on superdeformed nuclei of theA=140 mass region where a detailed spectroscopy in the second minimum is now possible. Hyperdeformed rotational bands, expected in the third minimum, lie at even higher spins where their observation is very difficult from the experimental point of view. We have up to now only weak signals of their presence. The status of the search for hyperdeformation in152Dy is reported.

The detection of hidden explosives by using nuclear techniques has been pursued by the EXPLODET Collaboration during the last years. The aim of the Collaboration was to verify the possibility of applying new tools and methodologies in Humanitarian De-mining. Results so far obtained are presented and discussed looking also to possible application in other fields.

ABSTRACT In the context or the design of an intense source of low and intermediate energy, neutrons, the angular and energy distributions of neutrons produced in the interaction of 90 MeV protons in a C-12 target, in which the protons are stopped, have been measured by time-of-flight and activation techniques, As compared to C-12 the yield is less than a factor two higher, while it is somewhat less than for a Be-9 target.

SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) is a project focused on the development of a Radioactive Ion Beam facility at National Institute of Nuclear Physics (Legnaro, Padua, Italy). As exposed by Andrighetto et al [1], the SPES facility is oriented to the production of intense neutron-rich RIBs according to the isotope separation on line (ISOL) technique. In an ISOL facility the pulsing core is constituted by the production target and the ion source, that working in series are able to convert a stable proton beam in a RIB. The surface ion source adopted for the SPES facility is at present the standard MK1 surface ion source developed and used at the ISOLDE facility (CERN, Switzerland); it is composed of a Tungsten (W) tubular ionizing cavity (length, external diameter and internal diameter equal to 34, 5 and 3.1 mm, respectively) connected on one side to a Tantalum (Ta) support (see figure 1) and on the other one to the Ta transfer line by means of a Ta connector (the transfer line is a Ta tube that allows the passage of the radioactive isotopes from the target to the ion source); behind the Ta support a Ta screen is positioned.

A detailed comparison between measured energy spectra and cross sections of 1,2,3H and 4He, evaporated from the composite system 96Ru (E*~=113 MeV), and the predictions of the statistical model, has been carried out. Results obtained with transmission coefficients derived from optical model (OM), ingoing-wave boundary-condition model (IWBCM) and fusion systematics (FS) are presented. The heat capacities and the dynamics of hot medium mass nuclei have been explored by studies of light particle emission. The variation in heat capacity with temperature, expressed in terms of an effective Fermi gas level density parameter appropriate to the statistical description of nuclear de-excitation, corresponds to a decrease in a from A/8 to A/13 as the excitation energy increases from 1 to 2 MeV/nucleon. This result is compared to recent theoretical predictions. An apparent sudden change in the heat capacity observed at slightly higher excitation energies per nucleon is also discussed. Prescission and post-scission particle multiplicities and temperatures in coincidence with evaporation residues and fission fragments provide further information on the decay dynamics of hot nuclei. Possible means of isolating presaddle emission and of determining the temperature dependence of the fission barrier are discussed.

A focal-plane detector for a recoil-mass spectrometer has been developed. It consists of a 14 × 14 cm2 position-sensitive parallel-plate avalanche counter backed by a 43 cm long Bragg chamber. Both detectors work in the same gas volume thus reducing the dead layers. The intrinsic resolution of the position detector is +/-0.5 mm, and an overall timing resolution of 660 ps FWHM was measured with 5.5 MeV alpha-particles. The Bragg chamber allows the identification of elements with energy high enough to overcome the Bragg peak: in all cases it allows the separation between the reaction channels and the beam scattering. The detector has already been used with a good reliability in a variety of transfer and fusion experiments at the LNL Recoil Mass Spectrometer.

ABSTRACT A new microstructure, anode-point based, for the detection of gas ionizing radiations and some preliminary results are presented. For every single detected ionizing radiation it gives a pair of “induced” charges of the same amount (pulses of the same amplitudes), of opposite sign, with the same collection time and essentially in time coincidence, that are proportional to the primary ionization collected. Gas multiplication more than 106 with more than 108 electrons in the primary avalanches, working in the proportional region, are possible in 760Torr of isobutane gas. The complete lack of insulating materials in the active volume of this microstructure avoids problems of charging-up and makes stable and repeatable its behaviour. Single electrons emitted by a heated filament (Ec

SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) is an INFN project to develop a Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) facility as an intermediate step toward EURISOL. The key feature of SPES is to provide high intensity and high-quality beams of neutron rich nuclei to perform forefront research in nuclear structure, reaction dynamics and interdisciplinary fields like medical, biological and material sciences. The exotic isotopes will be reaccelerated by the ALPI Superconducting Linac at energies of 11 AMeV for masses in the region of A=130 amu with an expected rate on target of 109 pps. This represent a substantial improvement to the actual available ISOL facilities both from the point of view of intensity and energy of the exotic beam.

SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) is an INFN project whose aim is the realization of a RIB (Radioactive Ion Beam facility) as an intermediate step toward EURISOL. The site selected for SPES is Legnaro National Laboratory (LNL), in the north-east region of Italy. The main reason for the site selection is the availability at LNL of the superconducting Linac ALPI, which will be used as re-accelerator of neutron-rich nuclei with mass in the range 80-160 to an energy of 8÷13 MeV/u. The schedule of SPES project foresees the beginning of building construction in 2010 and the completion of the facility by the end of 2014. We report a preliminary analysis on control system requirements for safety applications.
