On March 31, 2023, in Iași, at the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, a special event took place for the archeologists’ community: The homage of the 80 years of life of Prof. Dr. Nicolae Ursulescu, distinguished professor of the Iasi University. The event benefited from the participation of an impressive number of former and current collaborators and friends. In Romanian historiography and not only, Professor Ursulescu is considered a pioneer in certain segments of archaeological research, having a broad humanistic view and an unlimited horizon on the science and understanding of life itself. He was and is received as a strong voice in the academic environment, his name being linked not only to the beginnings of archaeological research at the University of Suceava, but also to a number of important achievements in the field, which brought him a well-deserved national and international recognition.

The recovery of old lost information regarding the discoveries of bronze hoards on the territory of the former historical province of Bucovina has a special importance. During the second half of the 19th century, there were found several bronze deposits which were "hidden" to the specialists' eyes, being only summarily published in Viennese magazines, or in unknown provincial publications. In the present study we submit for the first time to the attention of the searchers the hoard of Prisăcăreni (today on the territory of Ukraine). In 1885, the former Mayor of the town of Siret, Captain Josef von Gutter pointed out the discovery of a bronze hoard consisting in a bronze cauldron, containing a clay urn full of ash. The urn was surrounded all around by 12 bronze axes (celts). After analyzing these elements, we believe that the deposit can be ascribed to the Gáva-Holihrady culture (the Grăniceşti cultural group), characteristic of the Early Hallstatt in the northeastern C...

Abstract. The authors display in the present study a few considerations on the funerary practices incountered in the necropolis from Adâncata-"Imaş" (dep. of Suceava). The excavations have put into evidence nine tumuluses, but only the research done in the case of six of them are presented. The funerary rite and ritual presents resemblances, but also differences compared with other discoveries from Romania (Prăjeni), Poland (Komaóiw), Ukraina or the Republic of Moldavia. Rezumat. This study brings up the archeological discoveries made in the ,,Horodiștea/Zamca/Beill's Brickyard” site, located in the town of Siret, Suceava County. The author does a chronological evaluation of the discoveries, starting with the first archeological researches, which took place in the second half of the XIX century, coordinated by Josef von Gutter. Based on the information gathered, the author discusses the existence of an anthropic fortification, an idea which flourished in the collective memory, as well as in some scientific publications. The publications and documents from the XIX century tell us about interesting prehistorical, antiquity and medieval discoveries from the site, which, by summarization, offer a new, comprehensive image about the stratigraphy and the value of those archeological discoveries. In addition, we are presenting a few brief considerations about understanding the notion of ,,Horodiștea/Zamca/Beill's Brickyard” archeological site, which should be comprehended in all its complexity.

During the Austrian occupation of the north of Moldavia (Bukowina), a lot of scholars and amateurs were interested in the local history. Some of them collected objects discovered fortuitous and after a while, they donated their collections. In the same time, the restauration works made to the historical monuments from Bukowina were very important for Romanians because those monuments were witnesses of a glorious past and the objects unearthed during the restauration works became also proofs of that glory. The works made by Karl A. Romstorfer between 1895 and 1904 at the Fortress of Suceava were the starting point for the collection of the Suceava Museum, but also for the Bukowina Museum from Cernowitz when a part of the discoveries arrived. In Bukowina, another important collections belonging to the Siret Museum and to the University from Cernowitz, both of them were donated to the Bucovina Museum. All those collections had a numismatic part, with coins discovered on the Bukowina territory, dated especially in the Medieval Ages, but also Roman and Byzantine coins. The most part of the scientific information and the objects were lost in time, after two world wars, but we can reconstitute, theoretical, the collections by using the inventories which survive till today.

Over the years, archaeologists from the “National Museum of Bukovina” in Suceava have conducted numerous surface archaeological investigations in the area of Rădăuți city and adjacent regions. These researches have resulted in the discovery of a limited number of archeological sites (14), dating from various historical periods (from prehistory to the late medieval period). As a result, a first archaeological map of Rădăuți was published (2004), after more than 20 years of research, but – we emphasize this fact – no explanation could be offered, at that time, for the precariousness of the archaeological data existing both in the urban space of Rădăuţi, and especially in the neighboring regions (we mention that in those times there was no possibility to carry out complex interdisciplinary investigations or minimal archaeological surveys).
In the spring of 2019, the undertaking of extensive works for the future ring road bypassing Rădăuți, on a length of 16,000 + 500 m, required a number of 157 stratigraphic surveys specific to archeology and 10 pedological profiles. The specialists sought to identify any traces of anthropogenic habitation on the route of the mentioned road, but, surprisingly, no archaeological traces were identified along it. The present study refers to the corroboration of the data published in 2004 with the recent ones, which suggest that not only the prehistoric human communities, but also those from the Middle Ages sought to establish settlements in certain areas, more favorable, avoiding the space bordering Rădăuți (where the ring road was planned); precisely the lack of these favorable conditions on the route of the ring road of Rădăuți is discussed and argued based on geological, geomorphological and pedological research, which enrich the archaeo‑historical image of Rădăuți.
