The circus was the most important spectacle in Rome. However, it wasn't just a simple amusement but a consubstantial part of the life of most of the Romans, especially from those who lived in big cities. Yet, although Juvenal's celebrated aphorism of panem et circenses emphasizes its use as an instrument of social domination by the Roman authorities, that saying doesn't imply the whole truth. It's true that the passion involved was genuine and even it could affect the very identities of the supporters, but also had important repercussions and echoes on the political and social life −but also military, religious and economic− at all levels during more than a millennium. This monograph is divided into two parts. The first one is dedicated to examine the history of Roman circus from its beginning till the end of the rule of the Byzantine emperor Maurice, while the second part presents the competition and scrutinizes its impact, the supporters and its main actors, as the charioteers and the pantomimes.

"My thesis topic was Late Antiquity piracy in the western Mediterranean basin and the Atlantic Ocean from the third century till the end of the seventh century. My aim was to study internal (criminal) and external (barbarian) piratical societies and the Roman and Barbarian kingdoms response to this menace into a Centre and Periphery theoretical frame.
To attain this topic, I focused on many different research tools as ancient texts (from ancient history to Roman and barbarian laws and many others as Patristics, ancient fiction, panegyrics, epistles etc), archaeology, epigraphy and numismatics. "

This paper analyzes the historical evolution of the strait of Gibraltar within the framework of the Vandal history from the moment this central-European population settled in the Iberian peninsula and until their African kingdom was destroyed. The aim is to provide an alternative reading to the meaning of this crucial geographical space from both a factual and a geopolitical perspectives during this period. In consequence, it is presented a new historical reinterpretation based on both the sources' testimonies and their silences.

One of the most attested realities in the Late Antique world is its violent nature as such circumstance is perceived into the very social relations but also because of the frequent warlike episodes or the perennial criminality. This paper pretends to analyze the mediating role against violence of the Christian clergy, one of the principal actors of this period, in some of the ways that violence was displayed, mainly the one derived from banditry, piracy and war, and also its use in the bosom of the very Church.

This paper pretends to deal with the identity of the people who sailed the sea –specifically professional sailors– in Antiquity. Although we don’t deny singularities into the different Men of Sea who lived in this period, there are some aspects that are common to every sailor concerning their conditions of life and work regardless of their very different origins. In fact, their life-style clashed directly with the earth based society. These features shaped an identity that is more evident to recognize when we use ancient sources, which writers always came from the highest hierarchies of their societies or acted as speakers of these, that usually scorned the sailors because of the terrible fear that sea aroused on them, the nature of their economic activities, their different customs and the liberty that enjoyed Men of Sea because they could pollute the established order. In fact, we can speak of a mariner identity in opposition to the earthly-based society.

This paper deals with several episodes concerning piracy in the Western Mediterranean basin from the end of the fourth century and mainly on the firts decades of the fifth. The focus is on criminal piracy, that is, the maritime banditry originated inside the later Roman society. Although this is one of the periods with more factual data concerning piracy, this evidence doesn't mean there was a piratical explosion but an increased menace according to the circumstances of the Empire and the interests of the ancient sources.

The Third Century almost implied the end of the Roman Empire according to the extremely significant crisis suffered on every level. Concerning the military level, the imperial borders were shaken because of the increasing danger placed by the barbarians located beyond their limites. The Goths were one of the most active and preponderant peoples as future history showed. This paper is focused on this barbarian people and precisely both on their piratical raids carried out on the Eastern Mediterranean basin and also on the reactions displayed by the provincials from this area.

Through this paper, the author deals with the troubling historical episode known as the Barbarica Conspiratio that, in brief, implied a brutal barbarian attack by sea played by Picts, Scots, Saxons and Franks on the shores of continental Gaul and mainly on Britannia. Dr. Álvarez-Jiménez approaches this subject from a close analysis on Ammianus Marcellinus’ narrative and particularly on the his relationship with the later emperor Theodosius I, who was the son of Theodosius the Elder, the general in charge of recovering the British provinces to the Roman dominance.

An early coin issue of Postumus, first Gallic emperor, serves as the the basis for a new hypothesis about the existence of a naval expedition carried out by this usurper at the beginning of his rule against the Frankish pirates who had been harassing Gaulish and British shores. Nowadays, the perception of the Vandals, an ancient Germanic people who settled in Roman soil during the Late Empire, is conceived alongside with the term «vandalism» that currently means arbitrary violence. The Roman Empire appears as a massive structure provided with the most impressive administration and army known in Antiquity. Unfortunately, Rome could not provide the overall security that provincial population demanded because of its inherent limitations. In consequence, provincials had to provide themselves with their defence. This paper deals with this necessity and the resources used to counter the menaces that the State could not face and the implications arisen from this reality, in particular in the Later Empire.
