The pastoral is possibly the most pervasive and resilient artistic and literary phenomenon in the History of Western Art and Aesthetics. Warmly welcomed in its time, Renaissance bucolic literature unfolded in various forms of representation, in a ripple effect that perpetuated the genre, although its intended artificiality is, to some extent, unsettling and impervious to our contemporary taste. Pointing to some of the fundamental stages of the genre’s constitution and highlighting aspects of its structure, we seek to point to the operative devices that allowed conflicting forces of the social life experienced in that period to be negotiated and elaborated dialectically in the scene of pastoral fiction. Through this viewpoint, the pastoral culture unveils its fascinating and ingenious game of concealment, mirroring and smuggling.

Composers from the beginning of 20th Century found diverse ways to transcend metrical rhythm. These approaches to the temporal dimension of music would recall rhythmic practices from an era before the consolidation of musical meter and tonal harmony. As one goes throughout these moments of music history, different ways in which time and musical thought were intertwined reveal themselves. Musical excerpts from scores reveal different efforts in order to transcend rhythmic and metric phraseology.

ABSTRACT: Just over a century, art historiography, specially with German origin, seems to have redirected its reading of Italian Renaissance, focusing upon anticlassical components noticeable not only on the production of the 500' but also on the 400'. Following the historian Aby Warburg's perspective on pathos in Italian Renaissance art, we present here a parallel with aspects of certain strands of late Renaissance music. We seek to reveal similarities and differences in the process of survival or memory from Antiquity within both fields of expression, proposing a reading hypothesis of certain traces of avant-garde florentine music of this period.

temporalidade.
At the end of the XIIth century, a new process began in the western urban society, which changed the consciousness of time and turned the medieval temporality into a modern one. Related to the awakening of an arithmetic mentality, this process took place within a wide rationalization and speculation context which also affected music. In fact, the transition from non-measurable to measurable music is analogous to the transition from the medieval time to the modern time of mechanical clocks. It thus reveals the movement of ideas and of mental structures of representation, which leads to the transformation of temporality.

The musical collection known as "Madrigali Guerrieri et Amorosi", a mature work of Claudio Monteverdi, the most influential and revolutionary composer of the seicento, represents a musical realization of a poetics of opposites which is emblematic of the Baroque and mannerist literary aesthetics. Indications present in the collection allow us to identify some of the principal landmarks of the genealogyof this poetics of opposites, as well as to present hypotheses about the meaning of this collection within the context of the extensive musical oeuvre of Monteverdi.

There are approximately three decades between the early stages of melodrama and the writing, in c. 1630, of an Italian anonymous manuscript treatise entitled "Corago, ovvero alcune osservazioni per mettere bene in scena le composizioni drammatiche". With this paper we seek to bring to the foreground the musical aspects contained in the
referred treatise, which allow us to glimpse the process through which the new genre – born and raised in scholarly domains and classicizing academic/aristocratic circles – was confronted with its exposure to a larger audience. As a result of this confrontation, Il Corago shows us that the melodrama seems to have matured, surpassing the orthodox
rigors of its early forms, assimilating aesthetic veins differing from its Florentine background and bending to the taste of the audience for varietas and the spectacular.

A phenomenon analogous to the case of painting, the theme of vanity entered the field of music in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, materializing in a large corpus of vocal pieces, which have remained, however, overlooked by critics. Analyzing the representative vanity pieces in the Italian repertoire, this article intends to demonstrate the paradoxes of a speech that, while attempting to assert a code of moral values threatened by modern social practices, ultimately contributes to its abolition.

Rhetoric and musical elaboration in the baroque period: conditions and problems of the use of rhetorical categories in the critical discourse Abstract: Musical theory in the 16th and 17th centuries sought to systematize in several treatises what could be called musical rhetoric, establishing relationships and analogies between literary rhetorical categories and the composition mechanisms inherent to music. These treatises are inevitable tools to understand the depth of the influence of the eloquence's art on the period's musical discourse and practice and cause a certain discomfort when employed as analytical subsidies: addressing classical rhetoric only partially or often superficially, or with significant disagreement among treatises, they force us to question the viability, the difficulties and the possibilities of employing rhetorical theories to approach musical objects, both in the critic sphere and in interpretive praxis.
