The text turns to the notion of canon, in order to problematize the historiographical narrative of art and the theoretical-methodological impasses in face of the existence and consolidation of other histories/stories on the margins or incorporated into this narrative. When
approaching the discussion at an international level, with the West as the articulator of such questioning, its objective is to confront these points with the study of the historiography of Art in Brazil. At first, the term “canon” is
submitted to a review, to then relate it to the “Global Art History” and, finally, to raise some points to be considered in a Brazil perspective.

This article is about Brazilian art from the 1980`s, starting from a particular event called Moto Contínuo, which took place in the city of Curitiba, in 1983, and articulating it with the critic-historiographic speech about Geração 80, which rein- forces the conclusion that the period would be marked by the “return of painting”, in opposition to the previous decade’s art. Criticizing this kind of historic reductionism, we aim to offer parameters in order to discuss some strategies by which the Brazilian art historiography is build.

The relationship between “indigenous” cultural production and what we nominate as Art History in Brazil presents compelling problematics, from the historiographical scope of the issue. If “Art History” and “museum” are devices that feed off each other reinforcing discourses on both legitimate as “art”, it is essential to consider the ways in which artifacts of different indigenous peoples exposed in ethnographic museums or temporary exhibitions in artistic contexts provide the means to question the discursive mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion internalized by these devices.

Initially taken up in this article the debate between the British anthropologist Alfred Gell and the American philosopher Arthur C. Danto about the relationship between art / artifact to, from the questions raised about the notion of “trap”, confront these considerations with comparative analysis between cultural relativism and Amerindian perspectivism developed by the Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro. Then seeks to ascertain the impact of these ideas on the approach of cultural production of indigenous peoples in Brazil, examining a case study in relation to the recent conjuncture of assimilation and circulation of indigenous references in contemporary art system.

This text presents the first movement of a reflection that aims to articulate historiographical revision, documentary research and analysis of different conceptions about indigenous arts in Brazil, having as object of investigation Brazilian exhibitions dedicated to the theme. In order to address the proposed problem, it was decided at this moment (part I) to consider a case study in its uniqueness: the exhibition Alegria de Viver, Alegria de Criar [Joy of Living, Joy of Creating] (1977-1978), idealized by Mario Pedrosa, but not realized. We will call attention to the theoretical-methodological approaches related to the conception and planning of the exhibition, investigating how the conceptual universe of the show allows us to observe the direct relationship between curatorial and/or institutional thinking and the evidence of the persistence of a certain historical view about the cultural production of indigenous peoples in Brazil. This essay also aims to articulate the relationship between “objects” of (research in) art, theories of art and anthropology, based on curatorial
studies.

This study presents a analysis of the Moto Contínuo event, produced in the first half of the eighties, in the city of Curitiba, Brazil. Starting from the hypothesis that the event in Curitiba, for its questioning character and its pluralist approach on the artistic languages, becomes possible the posture and criteria’s review established by part of the Brazilian critic, which dedicated himself to the art produced during the eighties. It is intended, through a case’s study, to point at another approach possibilities of the artistic manifestations in this period. Considering this aspects, it was opted for re-dimensioning the work’s method, itself. Starting from the object’s specificities (since it’s almost unknown in the Brazilian’s Art History), going through a evaluation of the main points at the artistic field in Curitiba at the period (the context from where the event produced itself and the context it relates itself to in a more emphatic way), and through a analysis of the critical repercussion of the Moto Contínuo, to bring it closer to a more wide context, such as, the art produced in Brazil, at the same period, (through the apprehension in theory of itself). This choice allowed to re-signify the Moto Contínuo’s proposals in different levels, trying to understand them formally (and conceptually), socially and through the theory; at last, it was intended to investigate all the nodal points which allowed the constitution of the complex historic network of the event, made by different elements in constant reciprocal relation (like in a web, or in a network). At last, through the Moto Contínuo’s questions, it contributes and stimulates the debate about the historiography review process in art produced during the eighties, such as about the Brazilian art as a whole piece.

ABSTRACT: This essay examines some principles about the practice of curatorship, contextualizing it historically at the same time that addresses aspects of their prac- tice in the contemporary context: its nature as metier, their intermediate condition between profession and function, the different profiles, experiences and task who exercises it. Finally, puts up some questions about teaching and training curator- ship in order to foster debate and trying to limit the action field of that practice.
