This paper discusses digital communication, activism and political system in Spain from a critical-historical perspective. The results of combined empirical and analytical research indicate that a critical digital public sphere emerged in 2004 affecting the evolution of the political sphere to this day. Traditional parties had a slow and instrumental approach to the digital realm. Conversely, cyber-activism unfolded new options of political action, both in the short and long term, transforming the bipartisan system.

How does a new party manage to move from invisibility to occupying a central position in the public debate? How does it gain the attention of the mainstream media and recognition by the public and the institutions linked to sociopolitical and economic power? This article examines the media strategy followed by the Spanish party Podemos in its first year of activity. We apply quantitative and longitudinal methods to analyze the attention paid to Podemos by television channels, newspapers, online press, and digital networks. Results show that the party prioritized antagonistic talk shows, infotainment, and self-produced television programs, which combined to create a viral presence on digital networks and led to its leaders appearing on mainstream TV channels. This hybrid strategy took the party from media invisibility to the central public sphere, though traditional dependence on favorable opinion polls and electoral success were also relevant.

Communication, peaceful social change, and global citizenry synthesize a communication model that combines individual and collective responsibilities that aim to denounce situations of direct, structural, and cultural violence. This model sets goals and criteria grounded in peace, social justice, equality, and human rights to transgress and transform all types of violence and promote social, political, and economic contexts of inclusive diversity that can develop into peace cultures. This approach to communication examines the cultural consequences, responsibilities and potential of narrative processes (the performativity of language) centered on cultural efficacy, and advocacy and accountability parameters to attain peaceful societies.

The paper presents a learning experience with post-graduate students of the Master in
International Studies in Peace, Conflict and Development at the University Jaume I (Castellón,
Spain). It will focus on the course “Intercultural Seminars”, a weekly class that students attend
during the first three out of four terms of the program and that serves as an accompanying
learning environment.
This course was designed to promote students interaction and experiential learning beyond the
regular classes. For that purpose, the subject has a seminar format that combines the
participation of guest speakers and students presentations on general topics related to peace,
conflict and development.
The paper will describe the experience of introducing new active methodologies to enhance
learning practices of social change for students. In order to present the experience, the paper will
be organized in the following sections. First, we will introduce the context of the course within its
post-graduate program and the peculiarities of the international and interdisciplinary students’
profile. Second, we will review the main conceptual and pedagogical approaches that sustain the
new proposal of a structured active learning, particularly focused on group work, critical thinking
and reflexivity. Third, we will describe the structure, activities, and main aspects of the active
learning introduced in this course and its relevance for students’ intercultural and experiential
learning. Fourth, we will discuss the experience assessing both positive outcomes and challenges
encountered, also taking into account students’ feedback and evolution over the three terms.
Finally, we will present the conclusion on this experience offering some guidelines that may be
useful to other programs interested in carrying out similar practices in their educational settings.

Communication is a key element in promoting social change and, currently, social movements, one of the main drivers of socio-political demands aimed at transforming the existing system of injustices and inequalities, are carrying out profuse examples of communicative actions, particularly in the online realm. In this context, this thesis seeks to contribute to advance in the current scholarship on online communication for social change and, specifically, to explore which features of citizens’ online communication promote engagement for global peaceful social change.
For that purpose, the research methodology combines mixed methods including bibliographic review of the literature in the field of online communication for social change, as well as (online) content and discourse analysis applied to an international initiative promoted by social movements. The study focuses on the case of United for Global Change, which is the name of an international day of protest that took place on October 15, 2011 (15O), following the reawakening of social movements from the Spring of that year. This case has been studied along three main axes: 1) analysis of web and social media content; 2) analysis of video activism and 3) analysis of media representations.
Research findings suggest that the actual setting of Web 2.0 enables new forms of constructing knowledge and meaning that are being leveraged by social movements to insert new narratives and communicative strategies into public discourses to promote peaceful social change. Specifically, these online communicative actions embrace the following facets: cross-cutting issues, inclusiveness, justice, hope, peace and nonviolence, video activism, and media-orientation.
