tintoretto and architecture Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-1594) took an interest in architecture right from his formative years in a particularly lively period for Venetian painting, updated by exciting new Mannerist ideas introduced by Central Italian artists and writers who stayed in the city. Promoted by the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, this book has been published to mark the fifth centenary of Tintoretto's Birth (2019). Its purpose is to explore some highly promising histori ographical strands: the relationship between painted space in Tintoretto's paintings and actual physical space; the role of archi tecture in shaping composition and its influence on narrative as pects; and the original relationship between the painting and the viewer in the various contexts in which the works were placed (ecclesiastical and confraternal settings or public buildings). The different kinds of scholars involved and the exchanges be tween the various disciplines were the necessary condition for a systematic investigation into a subject that is inherently interdis ciplinary. The book thus brought together historians of architec ture, art historians and experts in the history of architectural and urban representation. marsel grosso is a research fellow in the Department of Cul tural Heritage at the University of Padua, where he is conducting a project on "Francesco Sansovino and the Arts".
City of the friars, sostenuto da diversi enti e istituzioni, prospetta

This essay describes the results of the Armonie composte project and the transmitted interdisciplinary method for studying monastic landscapes. Armonie composte is a series of seminars on monastic landscapes, that arises from the collaboration between the Abbey of Praglia and the University of Padua. The main purpose of the seminars is to show how the territorial planning and care system, based on the particular purpose of community life indicated by the Rule of St. Benedict, can still contribute to sustainable territorial planning. The project foresees the organization of an extended seminar and a workshop. Each seminar, organized in May at the Abbey of Praglia, alternates lectures and in-depth discussions. This article examines the role of architectural patronage at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and explores the relationship between building and charity. The San Rocco confraternity hall underwent many changes during its design and construction phases, suggesting that confraternity members were uncertain about the role it should play and the message it should send. Specific events point to a conflict during construction phases. One faction of members wanted a simple, sober building in accordance with evangelical austerity, while the other aspired to grandiloquent architecture. This article examines these conflicts in the relationship between architecture, ritual and institutional ideology.

This essay aims to investigate the role that the representation of urban spaces plays in the paintings of Jacopo Tintoretto and the use of perspective adopted by the painter in their configuration. [1] The study conducted by the team made it possible to systematically examine Tintoretto’s work for the first time, with particular focus on his use of space, architecture and perspective. This was also made possible by a research campaign aimed at restoring the perspective of a selection of nine important paintings, using a method never before adopted in such an extensive way for Tintoretto’s works. In this essay, in particular, we shall focus on a specific type of space, i.e. the urban space, which the painter adopts in a few of his paintings, but always in a significant manner, especially regarding the role it plays in the narrative, and the relationship with the model represented by the architectural theory of Sebastiano Serlio.

This paper presents the results of a research conducted at the University of Padua on the occasion of the “Cinquecentenario Tintorettiano” (2018-2019) and promoted by the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice.
The analysis of eleven works has allowed us to reconstruct 1) the relationship between the painted space and the actual physical space where they were originally placed, 2) the role of architecture as a
disciplinary element of the composition and in reference to the narrative dimension of history. It was possible to verify Ridolfi’s account of Tintoretto’s habit of using ‘perspective theaters’ to verify the correctness of his compositions. The case study analysed is ‘Ultima cena’ in the San Trovaso church (Venice): the research has concentrated on the lights in the painting, checking the correspondence between the painted space and the real space. In consideration of this aspect, possible in a virtual field, the deep understanding of the painting is recovered as a ‘place’ that needs not only to be looked at, but also understood and subdivided into its visible components, in the context of dialectic between religious space and the virtual space of the painting

The urban development of Venice, especially in
the XIII and XIV centuries, was strongly influenced
by the presence of the settlements of the Mendicant
Orders. In particular, in the marginal areas of the city,
the construction of churches and convents, often of
large dimensions, influenced the growth of the city,
the definition of its shape and the economic and social
transformations. The case of the convent of the friars
Preacher Santi Giovanni e Paolo is particularly useful
for investigating these dynamics because the northern
side of the city was already on the way toward a process of proto-industrialization in the XIII century. Yet,
the same analysis can be carried out by expanding to
a more systematic approach, also considering the dynamics of residential settlement, which in an area that
has always been characterized by a considerable social
variety can be used as sort of litmus papers to precisely
and clearly identify the real impact of the foundation
of a Dominican convent on a rapidly changing city.
The proposed analysis also makes use of digital technologies and considers transformations up to the XVIII
century, when the island doubled in size and took on
new urban functions, precisely because of the presence
of the convent

agricole habitantes in villis». 1

The essay aims to set up a systematic study on the medieval complex of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, adopting a multidisciplinary approach through the collaboration between the history of architecture, the history of sculpture and digital representation. In the "rst part of the essay we propose a reconstruction of the architecture of the monastery in its situation immediately preceding the transformations of the 16th and 17th centuries. To hypothesize a plausible reconstruction of the medieval architecture we studied sources and used tools that are
further discussed in the second part. Some reliefs and sculpted fragments, which plausibly pertinent to the medieval monastery, are the subject of the third part, with particular attention to their architectural role and their dating

CALL FOR PAPERS

SPECIALIST SESSION: S-URB-1 | Friars in Motion: Mendicant Orders and Urban Development (1200-1500)

The purpose of the session is to study the urban, architectural, social and economic consequences that the arrival of the Mendicant Orders involved in the European cities of the Middle Ages. The development of the city, in fact, is profoundly influenced by the establishment of convents in the suburbs, where the new “borghi” develop. The “crown” of convents around the center of the city forms a “belt” of urban hub from which new neighborhoods develop, but also a place for the exchange of ideas and people. In fact, the friar moves from one city to another, importing ideas, styles of preaching, social issues. For this reason, the convent is an important place of passage. Moreover, the convent is an open space that functions as a place of study, but also as a place of welcome for the masses of the poor who come from their companions and for the pilgrims who use it as a stop on their journey.
The session proposes to explore all these aspects of the role of convents in the Medieval and Early Modern city, considered as a place of interchange between cultures - even artistic- and people, in a multidisciplinary and international perspective. They are invited to present proposals of different historical disciplines (topics on built environment, on artistic and architectural history, on religious, economic, social subjects connect to urban history) aimed at investigating the theme proposed in the session. In particular, we believe it is useful to start a debate regarding some urban phenomena triggered by the convents of the mendicant orders and verify their actual consequences on the urban structure and architectural solutions adopted, starting from some specific cases. In this way, we aim to verify how a phenomenon on a European scale can interact with individual local cases, both in big cities and in small villages.

The convents of the mendicant friars played a central role in the construction of the cities of Late Middle age and Early Modern Europe (1200-1500). The international character of the orders and mobility of the friars meant that new trends, styles and social practices spread rapidly throughout Europe: friars were as much “missionaries” of social practices as they were of architectural or decorative ones. This panel poses the question of how to situate Mendicant architecture as a result of the product of spiritual, social and economic policies negotiated between convents and citizenship, between laity and religious.
This session (born from the international project “The medieval city, the city of the friars”, 2018 AISU Networking Call for Proposal and Medieval Heritage Platform, Politecnico di Torino DIST) focuses on the mendicant construction strategies. Architecture extends into the city and permeates the urban constructions. This strongly determines the conception of the construction of convents as result of the interaction of several factors related to the will to self-representation, the progressive affirmation of order and the utopian ideal of poverty, always conditioned by the search for economic support and by the local conjunctures. Conventual buildings as a result of a long process of becoming, as part of an organic and additive approach to architecture. The architecture of the new orders was by definition work in progress molded to their changing institutional character and the conventualization of their settlements.

The medieval city, the city of the friars: places and spaces for intercultural exchange

In the European city of the thirteenth century, the arrival of the communities of the Mendicant Orders involves a revolution from a social and urban point of view. The development of the city, in fact, is profoundly influenced by the establishment of convents in the suburbs, where the new "borghi" develop. The "crown" of convents around the center of the city forms a "belt" of urban hub from which new neighborhoods develop, but also a place for the exchange of ideas and people. The convent, in fact, is an important place of passage in the medieval city: on the contrary that the monk, the friar does not have the bond of "stabilitas" and moves from one city to another, importing ideas, styles of preaching, social issues. Moreover, the convent is an open space that functions as a place of study, but also as a place of welcome for the masses of the poor who come from their companions and for the pilgrims who use it as a stop on their journey. The session (born from the project "Medieval city, the city of the friars", funded by the 2018 AISU Networking Call for Proposal and the project Medieval Heritage Platform, Politecnico di Torino DIST) proposes to explore all these aspects of the role of convents in the medieval city, considered as a place of interchange between cultures-even artistic-and people, in a multidisciplinary and international perspective. They are invited to present proposals of different historical disciplines (religious, economic, social, artistic and architectural history) aimed at investigating the theme proposed in the session.

The conference aims to shed light on the often-marginalised role of the mendicants within the studia humanitatis. The contribution of religious orders to humanism has been noted in the historical sciences for decades, but in art history it awaits further research and some clarification with regard to the reciprocal relationship between orders and urban elites – in other words, the intertwining of convents and the city.
In the context of the history of ideas and moral philosophy of the 14th and 15th cen-turies, one disputed the best form of state and negotiated cultural values. In their debates, civic cultural identity and construction of history were at stake. It might be assumed that the mendicants helped to shape a political culture that was still being negotiated in the Quattrocento and that they were actively involved in the evocation of a certain image of the city or a community. The ideas, above all from philosophical and theological contexts, developed in the studia of the convents in the context of dis-putations between religious scholars and humanist laymen. Such ideas were able to influence the ‘aesthetics of the city’. In addition to such places of knowledge exchange, sermons should be considered, by means of which ideas generated in the studia were passed on to a broad urban public.
On the one hand the participation of the mendicant orders in humanist discourses in the context of the valori civici should be highlighted. We thus ask how individual mem-bers of the orders acted as opinion makers, communicated and passed on ideas, and in this way shaped—directly or indirectly—the materially conceived and built body of the city. On the other hand, the focus will be on the appropriation of an ‘aesthetics of civitas’ on the part of the orders.
What role did the arts play in this reciprocal relationship between religious scho-lars and lay people? How did the use of certain materials, iconographic features, the conscious reception of antiquity versus local tradition, and even the construction and design of space relate to humanist discourses? And in what way did the same mate-rial aesthetics and semantic formulas in turn find their way into the ‘language’ of the Mendicants?
The hypothesis of the conference is the assumption that the mendicants played a  significant role in the formation of an iconography of the civitas.
