Translating the French argot using the regional Italian lexicon: some examples from the translation of Daniel Pennac’s La petite marchande de prose
Is the regional Italian an interesting solution to translate the French typical ar- got? In the course of time the argot has moved from a diastratic variation to a diaphasic variation. Nowadays, the argot is often used in literature more for drafting a character identity or modulating his expressiveness than for marking his social status. What does this change imply in translation? Through an anal- ysis of the uses of the argot in Daniel Pennac’s novel La petite marchande de prose (Write to Kill, 1999), this paper considers the solutions adopted in its Italian translation La prosivendola by Yasmina Melaouah. The choice of some words and expressions derived from the regional Italian (dialettismi) but which are now part of the national Italian is a possible way for translating the argot: the italiano regionale has a lighter diatopic connotation than Italian dialects have and it is more and more used for expressiveness purposes by Italian speakers. This change puts the italiano regionale in connection with the French argot. The au- thors’ suggestion is that literary translators who have to deal with the transla- tion of argot into Italian can exploit this resource.

The Triumph of Death is both the title of Pieter Bruegel’s painting and DeLillo’s Underworld prologue: what is the connection between the medieval panorama of skeletons and the novel’s opening scene? The description of the painting and the garbage rain during the baseball match at the Polo Grounds point out two important elements: death and waste, both related to the activity of recycling, that has a fundamental meaning in the novel. In this «rococo exercise in coincidences», recycling is the way of pursuing the illusion of immortality: from the beginning, then, DeLillo gives the reader one of the keys opening the doors of his postmodern Hades.
