At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, Ancient Greek tragedy becomes a field for a wide range of new stage practices, thus showing a true modernity. The elements of representation such as set, actor's performance, and chorus offer a particular heterogeneity. This revival of tragedy provokes as well an increasing interest among translators. This book first focuses on how the text is being staged nowadays. The work then provides an analysis of a number of performances which testify a will to go back to the origins of theatrical language. Thirdly, it offers a critical analysis of cross-cultural interactions at work in the representation of tragedy. And finally, this study describes how certain representations favouring the use of visual arts highlight mainly the personal artistic vision of the director.

Transformations of Medea on the contemporary stage
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the myth and character of Medea served as a launching pad for breakthrough theatrical approaches on the international stage. In this paper, I propose a typology of staging of Medea, focusing on a corpus of emblematic theatrical productions from Greece and abroad. I explore performances of Medea where the emphasis is placed on the text and its various aesthetic reflections, as well as those that propose a “tribal reading” by highlighting the rituality and the primordial dimension of the tragedy, along with performances that specifically showcase the element of interculturalism. Lastly, I refer to stage creations that, being in contrast to the logocentric nature of ancient tragedy and drawing inspiration from the visual arts and Tanztheater, express a personal perception of the myth of Medea, thus, reshape a new mythology. Within this framework, I attempt to address questions and reflections regarding the choice of translation, the use of the dramatic text, the creative concept and directorial approach, the acting and performing, the handling of the Chorus, as well as the function of spatial, sonar and visual elements.

Despite the fact that the mask always retained a powerful potential for expression and remains a challenge to be met by many theatre directors, it has become on the contrary one of the main difficulties of the staging of ancient Greek drama. Following this observation, it was therefore deemed necessary to examine not only the reasons for its use, but also the causes of its marginalization.

The chapter discusses large-scale flagship research projects, with special focus on the Time Machine project, which has mobilized European scientific and technological institutes, researchers and companies on an innovative mission at the forefront of computer science and the digital humanities: the reconstruction of the long multicultural history of Europe. This is the largest project ever undertaken in this field at a European level. Supported by ca. 700 institutions, 30 countries and multiple international initiatives, it aspires to offer Europe the technology of preserving and reconstructing its eons-long history and culture. The chapter also presents several possibilities of individual partnerships related to this ambitious project.

The presence of new technologies in contemporary theatre is not limited to the use of video and digital imaging, but also extends to the field of cybernetics and robotics. Mechanical figures and anthropomorphic automatic devices star in the international theatrical avant-garde and dominate the cutting edge of contemporary research, while occupying a special place in our imagination fed by archetypal myths, hopes and eternal fears. Sometimes as remote-controlled machines, sometimes as hybrids-extensions of the human body and sometimes as humanoid simulacra, with movements unlike those of humans, these engines ‘embody’ the most convincing but also disturbing simulation of the human, biological entity by an inanimate object. On the basis of scientific robotic research and stage attempts taking place mostly in the Far East, we will attempt to investigate the paradoxical osmosis between two heterogeneous entities, a performer and a machine.

The achievements in the growing domain of the digital humanities greatly facilitate the documentation and processing of archival material, through the elaboration of models for databases and search tools. Due to the great variety of creative processes involved in the performing arts, genetic research must possess the necessary means for the documentation, collection and management of an enormous amount of information, produced during all the stages of creation, from initial conception up to completion on stage.
This article presents the main hypotheses of the newly launched research project ‘Genesis: Genetic Research and Digital Visualisation in the Performing Arts’, which aims to conduct research in the genetic studies of the performing arts, and more specifically to develop and apply a model of digital narration of the creative process. The project is based on the rich and complex work of two internationally acclaimed stage directors, Romeo Castellucci and Dimitris Papaioannou.

In this chapter, I present the most significant steps in Romeo Castellucci’s career in order to provide insight into his singular way of devising theatre. Starting from the very early beginnings and Castellucci’s first explorations in the world of art in the 1970s, I proceed with a more thematic discussion of his theatre work, singling out the key motifs, ideas and aesthetic features that undergird his artistic poetics. This brief journey through Castellucci’s theatrical universe will lead us from the iconoclasm that defines his and Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio’s relationship to images, the role of language and silence in his dramaturgy, as well as his noted fascination with the expressive power of human bodies, animals and children.
This chapter not only enjoys the benefit of hindsight, but also draws heavily on the archival material that has been collected, catalogued and digitized, as part of three large-scale research projects.

The celebrated Italian stage director Romeo Castellucci comes to Greece for the fourth time, within the framework of the Athens Festival 2016. The performance-dramatic intervention Julius Caesar. Fragments was first staged in Bologna, in March 2014, as part of the tribute to the director entitled “And the Fox said to the Crow: a lesson in general linguistics”. It consists in a condensation of the emblematic performance Julius Caesar, staged in 1997, one of the most ground-breaking and subversive art creations of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio. [...[ The performance is centered on questions concerning rhetoric, the art of acting, the power of persuasion, and the omnipotence of hollow political discourse.

In Go Down, Moses, we will follow man’s descent to the dark cave, his return to the womb, the place where the initial representation of a world in which we are both observer and observed is conceived. Naked and afraid, the man will grope his way out to an unknown and unpredictable world. He will be exposed to the light and the constant threat of the other’s look, as the newborn baby is when wrenched from the protective darkness of the womb. Who will guide him in his painful Exodus? Who will free him from the shackles of false images?

From the Eleusinian Mysteries to classical tragedy, from animal rituals to Platonic philosophy and to the workings of the city-state, the Ancient Greek world is ever present in the theatre of Romeo Castellucci. Words, meanings, and concepts, such as nyx teleia, epopteia, sygē, katabasis, pharmakon, run through his work and thinking, in a constant attempt to connect and —at the same time— break with the past. In his own words: “One must discover the roots to be able to cut them.” In this paper I shall endeavour to descend into the “perfect darkness” of Castellucci’s universe, in search of the traces of Ancient Greek thought in his writings and performances. The problem will thus be to examine the ways in which, through a sequence of continuities and breaks, his theatre redefines its relation to its origins.

Theatre from its very inception was created of voyeuristic material. Aristotle in his Poetics, the first theoretical text written on theatre, refers to the pleasure enjoyed by the viewers «τὰς εἰκόνας ὁρῶντες» (as they watch likenesses, Arist. Po. 1448b). The etymology of the word «θέατρον» (theatre) leads us to the term «θέα» (view), meaning look, contemplation, while theatron is «ὁ τόπος ἐν ᾧ θεάται τις», signifying the place where someone both watches and is being watched. This reference to the origins of the theatre is not coincidental. In ancient Greek drama the role of the spectator and the power of the gaze were of primary importance, in the same manner as in the theatre of Romeo Castellucci and his artistic company Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, on which this article focuses. Posing the question “what is the meaning of watching?”, Romeo Castellucci advocates a dramaturgy of the gaze, attempting to activate the ability of watching, as well as being watched.

In any case, the representation of political actuality through the tragic myths, could lead to a certain impasse: Would such an attempt be applicable, or even effective, in the times when television systematically resorts to the dramatization of political, economical and social events?
Among the numerous stage artists and directors that take the challenge to approach today’s issues through the Greek tragedy, outstanding artistic personalities, such as Wole Soyinka, Rodrigo Garcia and Peter Sellars can be distinguished.

In the turn of the 20th century, numerous theatre directors focus on the representation of mythological figures such as Prometheus. In these performances we no longer receive the text of Aeschylus but mostly the images that the directors allow us watch and interpret. Approaching the unconscious of the spectator, these images are an act of purifying the imagination, a process by which, the artists virtualize their personal mythologies. Distinguished theatre directors such as Robert Wilson, Rodrigo Garcia and Jan Fabre have worked on the ancient Greek myth of Prometheus, attributing a primal substance to elements such as the actor’s body and the visual scenery.

The display of violence on contemporary stages meets a growing perplexity from a public that does not easily accept theatrical practices which he thinks uselessly aggress him and for which he does not find any justification. Opinions are divided however and those who believe theatre can have a concrete social impact don't rebel against such violence directed towards them but rather defend its artistic interest, its accuracy or even its absolute necessity. Thus reconsidered, violence holds—according to them—a mobilising force which is perhaps not to be shun. Generating a tension amongst audiences it is susceptible to awake indignation and to arouse reflection. Does violence have the capability or not to raise awareness, to turn spectators into actors? Or is the public on the contrary forced into a king of voyeurism? Is his taste for sensationalism more flattered than criticised? Contemporary artistic creation is crossed by radical trends and it is around some of their best known avatars—Jan Fabre and Rodrigo García amongst others—that we will discuss these questions.

Πώς μπορεί λοιπόν σήμερα το θέατρο να ανταποκριθεί σε αυτόν τον ανελέητο ανταγωνισμό και πώς θα κατορθώσει να αφυπνίσει το ενδιαφέρον του θεατή;
