PurposeTo combat concerns over the state of the natural environment, energy security and deteriorating air quality, the oil and gas sector needs to implement eco-innovations. Interest in eco-innovation is growing, as its implementation facilitates the transition toward sustainable development and a circular economy, while enabling firms to attain a competitive advantage vis-à-vis capabilities that foster sustainable economic and environmental development. However, literature on eco-innovation capabilities construct development, measurement and validation is scant. This study, therefore, develops an Eco-innovation Capabilities Scale for oil and gas firms.Design/methodology/approachThree dimensions of Eco-innovation Capabilities are identified through an extensive literature review and qualitative interviews. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis is applied to data collected from managers of Malaysian Oil and Gas Services and Equipment (OGSE) companies.FindingsResults reveal a parsimonious three-dimensional structure with nine items. The construct of eco-innovation capabilities is manifested by Product Service Stewardship, Environmental Pollution Prevention and Sustainable Development Commitment dimensions. Reliability analysis confirms the reliability and validity of the scale.Originality/valueThe eco-innovation capabilities scale should be useful to researchers in exploring dimensions, factors and outcomes of eco-innovation capabilities. Oil and gas firms play a key role in the global energy mix; hence managers of oil and gas firms may also find this scale useful in measuring their eco-innovation implementation.

This study develops a comprehensive conceptual framework and propositions that integrate the concept of internal corporate social responsibility (ICSR) belief with employee intention to job continuity for solving the existing problem of employee's job turnover. A careful examination of existing literature on the construct of ICSR facilitates the necessity for the development of a research framework consisting of several research propositions. An integrated conceptual framework of ICSR belief and employee intention to job continuity was constructed based on the existing conceptualization of corporate social responsibility and ICSR. In addition, this paper proposes a quantitative research method to obtain information about ICSR belief and employee intention to job continuity. Questionnaire instrument will be used to collect data from the employee. The paper also proposes partial least square structural equation modeling for the proposed study analysis. Finally, the conceptual fram...

Principal Topic This study focuses on the relationship between corporate governance (board of structure & composition) and corporate entrepreneurship activities in firms. Existing research examines aspects of governance and entrepreneurship without any consideration of the links that may exist between these two drivers. This study seeks to address this gap. Practicing corporate entrepreneurship has become an important element to compete successfully in today’s competitive environment. However, an overemphasis of entrepreneurship could also lead towards negative implications such as high-risk, as the outcome is unknown and involves an element of uncertainty which could have negative implications on the company. On the other hand, organisations are also required to practice robust corporate governance in order to enhance greater transparency and accountability. Although the benefits of corporate governance are well acknowledge, there is the potential for a tension to arise between the...

Purpose: This paper shed light on this diversity at board level topic by conceptualizing the relationships as firm value and diverse board. Design/methodology/approach: Reasonable theoretical arguments drawn from Upper-echelon theory and agency theory suggest that board characteristics (gender diversity) may have either a positive, negative, or a neutral effect on the firm value. Bridging as gender diversity and Bonding has firm performance. To investigate this phenomenon relevant hypotheses are developed to test diversity at board level and its impact on firm value with the use of appropriate variables and measures. For this empirical work, the board of directors attributes and financial data used over the period 2009 to 2013. A total sample of large 60 top Malaysian listed companies is selected on the basis of their market capitalization. This study incorporates econometrics methodology on panel data analysis, which is used rigorously for hypothesis testing. Findings: The study revealed that Gender diversity has no significant impact on firm value. The results indicate that demographic diversity at board level does have a relationship with market value. Originality/value: Many governments seek to impose diversity in the boardroom, but the consequences of doing so are inconsistent and could decrease firm performance and economies. While extensive literature exists on diversity issues, this issue is still under debate and inconsistent results. Furthermore, there is a need to investigate this problem in a more holistic way and with rigorous statistical estimation. The paper attempts to fill the gap in the existing literature, discuss the empirically diverse corporate boards and impact on the firm performance. Introduction One of the vital issues for corporate boards of listed firms are its board composition. Corporate board is considered to be balanced if its board members come from various backgrounds, which benefits it to perform more effectively. Developing societal, political and cultural views at top

Corporate governance in Malaysia has been a relatively new topic with only having established its first code in the year 2000. Efforts were made to improvise the local corporate governance code in 2007 & 2012. However, greater efforts are needed so that the interests of the shareholders are well protected and hence are able to make better investment decisions. Looking towards the western countries and the neighbouring countries, corporate governance has been a vigorously practiced phenomenon and companies have to be very transparent about their operations, especially the on-goings of the Board. Organisations were established to provide data and information to the general public about the above and their efforts of measuring governance practice of corporations has been welcomed by the majority of investors. However, when looking into the Malaysian context, there are hardly any organizations that follow a similar duty. Information can only be found in annual reports and Bursa Malaysia...

Reporting is a means of communication for companies to their respective stakeholders. The literature on non‐financial reporting has mostly focused on operational, Carbon Discloser Project (CDP), and environmental disclosure to firm performance. This reporting and disclosure approach adopted by companies in their sustainability practices appears to be a normative approach. However, there has been a growing demand by stakeholders to incorporate proactive approach in business activities. To meet that, green innovation practices (GIPs) has been integrated as a new element in environmental reporting, thereby reflecting the proactiveness of companies in their adoption of green innovation reporting (GIR). The objective of this study is to advocate for greater disclosure on sustainability reporting by incorporating the GIPs of companies and substantial, sustainable development goal contribution, along with the moderation of the newly upgraded ISO 56002‐2019 innovation management system. The purpose of this study is to investigate why shopper experiences cognitive dissonance in the aftermath of impulsive shopping and what should be the retailer's strategy on that. A qualitative phenomenological research method was undertaken. In-depth interviews were conducted. The analysis revealed five themes that highlight the shopper's impulsive shopping experiences. Themes were divided into textural and structural descriptions of the phenomenon. In textual description one theme emerged that illustrate shopper post impulsive shopping experience. In structural description four themes emerged in which shopper expressed that they forced to do impulsive shopping. Impulse shopping is a blessing for retailer's perspective, however, it has found that shoppers are smart they can track retailer's tactics that persuading to increase impulse shopping. Now it is a challenge for retailers to overcome the situation. In this context, this study also discussed how does retailers can maximize profit by using the insights from game theory to shape a game that is right for their shoppers. An idea of creating value and how to capture value through game changing were elaborated.

ABSTRACT This study seeks to examine the relationship between ethnic diversity among board members and market value of listed firms in Malaysia. Ethnic diversity is defined as the number of non-bumiputra (Chinese, Indian) on the board of directors. The concept of value-in-diversity argues that a diverse workforce is beneficial for business organization. Diverse members of boards enhance the overall performance of the organization. Literature shows that there is ambiguity among previous researches. The results seem to be inconsistent. There is a need to investigate this issue in a more holistic way. This research is unique and first of its kind that consider the relationship between ethnic diversity on boards with market value. The results indicate that ethnic diversity does have an impact on market value, but they are inversely correlated. The results also indicate that the proportion of non-bumiputra on boards tends to increase with the increasing members on board. However, ethnic diversity is negatively associated with market performance. The outcomes of the research help to shareholders, and other stakeholders, including the potential investors and policy makers to understand the significance of ethnic diversity at top level management.

A young researcher who is new to small business research needs to accept that management is a nascent discipline and that the process of advancing knowledge is fraught with difficulties. This paper focuses on the approach utilised by a young new management studies lecturer, specialising in a large company oriented Human Resource Management knowledge-base, wishing to research for the first time on small business and its management training needs. The paper demonstrates how the shortcomings and difficulties of small business management research can be utilised as "signposts" to guide any future small business researcher. Integral to this signposting is the debate on quantitative versus qualitative research methodology. An alternative philosophical foundation is then considered allowing the co-existence of both methodologies. The paper also draws attention to the difficulties and shortcomings inherent in such a research approach and considers the role of "partial framewo...

This study contributes to the development of a green servitization framework to achieve manufacturing firms’ sustainable performance using ISO 14001 as a driving factor in their operational management system. Manufacturing firms are becoming concerned due to the associated problem of physical flow of materials and energy through the ecosystem, which can hinder resource sustainability for future generations as a result of the enormous waste and emission of carbon produced by their operations. This is possible due to a lack of implementation of ISO 14001 in the production process, leading to a waste of resources and negative environmental effects on people and the planet, which requires an urgent green solution. Therefore, the present study investigated the adoption and implementation of ISO 14001 as a catalyst of a green initiative towards achieving sustainable performance. After a review of studies in operational and environmental management, a quantitative methodology was adopted i...

Transportation is critical in contributing to the quality of life development; however, it has also negatively impacted human life and the environment with carbon emissions. Electric Vehicles (EVs) are believed to be the best solution to reduce transport emissions. The EV adoption rate in developed countries is growing annually, but in developing countries very low, especially in Malaysia. Against this background, this study aims to identify the significant factors that can influence consumer motivation toward purchasing EVs. To the best of the author's knowledge, this contribution is the first where the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) was modeled with performance expectancy, effort expectancy, fuel efficiency, technophilia, and advertisement to maximize the consumer motivation toward adoption of EVs. SmartPLS has analyzed independent variables' influence in this study by drawing a conceptual framework. The data has been collected from 150 responde...

The current global economy demands synergy between ecological responsiveness and proactive business models. To analyze these dynamics, the objective of this study is to simultaneously investigate the effects of green innovation practices concerning the sustainable development goals (SDG) and financial performance of firms. This study also advocates for the injection of green innovation reporting into sustainable reporting for greater disclosure. Data from sixty-seven companies from five continents and the top five blue chip firms for each country are collected through content analysis, with the generalized least squares (GLS) approach used to test a causal relationship hypothesis. The results indicate mixed findings, with green product innovation showing positive relationships with returns on equity (ROE) and returns on investments (ROI). At the same time, green process innovation shows negative relationships with returns on assets (ROA) but shows a positive impact on returns on inv...

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SDGs) has been established to alter our world by addressing the challenges faced by humanity in order to promote wellbeing, economic prosperity, and the protection of the environment. The SDGs provide a holistic and multi-dimensional approach to development compared to conventional development plans that focus on a limited range of dimensions. As a result, linkages between the SDGs may result in differing outcomes. This research is the first to investigate the direct relationship of environmental and social SDGs with firms’ financial performance and the moderating role of green innovation. Data from 67 companies from five continents (Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Asia, North America, and Africa) and their top five blue-chip firms were collected through content analysis. Most of the corporate demises evidenced poor quality of financial information reporting. Besides others, this is due to inefficiency of board which couldn't ensure effective monitoring of management. Subsequently, the regulators have focused independence of the board among others. Accordingly, the recently introduced Malaysian Code on corporate governance (MCCG 2012) also recommended independence of the board like many other CG regulations around the world. Therefore, this paper proposes to examine few attributes of the new code regarding independence of the board in relation to quality of financial information reporting. These attributes includes separate leadership, independent chair and proportion of independent directors on board and nomination committee. To find distinct impact of the code, the paper divides study period into 2 years pre (2010-2011) and 2 years post (2013-2014) context of the code. This paper discusses the development of a Corporate Entrepreneurship Index to measure the entrepreneurial activities among the FTSE 100 companies in the U.K. Given the importance of having entrepreneurship skills within an organisation, this study utilized a holistic framework approach in creating entrepreneurial organizations. This is created by using elements that are involved at various levels i.e. individual level, job level and organization level. Therefore, in this study the Corporate Entrepreneurship Index was adapted from the previous measurements developed by Morris (1996), Kuratko et al. (1999) and Moerloose (2000) to measure the level of entrepreneurial activities in the organisations. This study obtained a response rate of 42% whereby the result indicated that half of the 42 companies (50%) possessed lower medium level and below of entrepreneurialism level. This revealed that a large proportion of the companies were low entrepreneurially. On contrary to the general expec...

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are vital for economic growth in the emerging economies. SMEs are the big contributor to the GDP and employment in every country. It is important that the corporate governance practices need to be implemented to monitor and control firms and their majority shareholders. The ownership concentration in Malaysian SMEs has resulted in less protection of the minority shareholders. This is because; most of the companies are family based, where the family members hold the top management positions. Therefore, the majority shareholders are involved in the act of expropriation, which results loss of huge amount of money and trust of the minority shareholders. In Malaysia, the SMEs does not have any documented corporate governance code, this creates the problems like expropriation. This study is focused on medium sized SMEs. Furthermore, this study investigates the extent of expropriation of minority shareholders and the necessity to have a comprehensive cod...

Several previous studies have shown that in the stock market, the stock performance of sharia companies is better to that of non-sharia companies. Then this research increases the qualification of the companies to become companies that have implemented green innovation technology. This qualification is applied to companies listed in the Sri-Kehati index on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. Through bivariate and multivariate analysis, the results showed that the stock performance of non-sharia companies was better than those of sharia companies. Bivariate analysis show that the positive gradient of non-sharia trendline (168.37) is bigger than sharia trendline (11.633). The coefficient of determination between non-sharia stocks and Sri-Kehati index (86.41%) is bigger than between sharia stocks and Sri-Kehati index (26.46%). Multivariate analysis obtained a multiple linear regression eq...

Reporting is a method for businesses to communicate with their various stakeholders. While the factors contributing to sustainability reporting and disclosure have been thoroughly investigated, the findings are inconclusive. Similarly, the non-financial reporting literature is disclosed of operational and non-operational activities related to ecological as well as social disclosure of firm. However, in recent years, stakeholders have increased their demand for green innovation practices (GIPs) to be included as a new component of ecological reporting. Thus, companies' proactivity in adopting green innovation reporting is reflected (GIR). This research propounds enhancing transparency in sustainability reporting by including corporations' GIPs, which will increase the transparency level of firm operations and instil greater stakeholder confidence. To accomplish this study, the legitimacy and signalling theories were used as an environmental solution. Additionally, an exhausti...

The transport sector is the leading source of growing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally. To consider environmental degradation aspects due to transport, electric vehicles (EVs) have the prospect to lead road transport to electric mobility from conventional petroleum vehicles. Despite various eco-friendly benefits, the EV market penetration ratio is very low, especially in developing countries. The primary reason for low penetration is consumer limited motivation and knowledge about the EVs features. This paper uses a unified theory of acceptance and technology (UTAUT) model to assess consumer motivation and environmental knowledge towards EVs. This research used convenience random sampling to collect data and analyzed the results using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method on the example of 199 respondents from Malaysia. The study results revealed that factors identified in the motivational context significantly influence consumer intentions to purchase EVs. Perceived environ...

Eco-innovation has gained considerable attention in academia as well as in industry due to its potential in mitigating environmental challenges and its positive correlation with firm performance. However, there are limited studies which have investigated the moderating relation of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001:2015 between eco-innovation and firm sustainability in their contribution to societal development. This research is supported by a resource-based theory which explores the core-competencies of firms and challenges the resources creating the competitive advantage of the firm without compromising on the social responsibility aspect of the firm. This study proposes a fishbone eco-innovation business model, which includes production (product, process, and technology) and non-production (organization and marketing) business activities mapped with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for societal development. This fishbone eco-innovation business ...

Eco-innovation has gained considerable attention in the academic and corporate world due to its potential in mitigating a firm’s sustainability issues. Most previous studies focused on the reactive approaches of eco-innovation using primary data. This study mitigates the existing research gap by highlighting proactive eco-innovation and using a secondary panel dataset. The prime objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between proactive eco-innovation and firms’ financial performance. Hence, the study will introduce the proactive eco-innovation index with the help of secondary panel data. In addition to that, the paper will also explore how proactive eco-innovation relates to circular economy. The theory of Resource-Based View (RBV) was used to explain the relationship among the variables. This study was conducted on 31 Malaysian public listed energy companies from 2015 to 2019. A proactive eco-innovation index was inferred by adapting three dimensions of eco-innov...

Small and medium enterprises are vital components for economic growth globally. Similarly, the Malaysian manufacturing SMEs has contributed greatly in developing Malaysia’s economy. However, higher failure rate of the Malaysian SMEs is a great concern among researchers and government bodies. Currently, the industry 4.0 has changed the business environment globally. Therefore, this study attempts to investigate the relationship of ownership structures on firm performance with a mediating role of innovation. Baron and Kenny approach of mediation analysis was used on the sample of the Malaysian manufacturing SMEs. The results revealed that, majority SMEs prefer traditional business methods, which causes the higher failure rate in the industry.
