Carlo Maratti

The article analyzes the loss of interest in the study of human anatomy through dissection of cadavers that characterizes the Baroque period, and that distinguishes the Baroque from the Renaissance and from Neoclassicism. It is a change that can be a key to understanding the aesthetics of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, when the almost obsessive study of the draperies replaced that of the anatomy. The contest between Carlo Maratti and Carlo Cesi within the Academy of St. Luke was an important turning point in this process.

Il testo rilegge l’evoluzione dell’iconografia di S . Rosalia, patrona di Palermo a partire dal primo ritratto ufficiale voluto dal Senato di Palermo nel 1624.
Riprendendo una nota querelle innescata apparentemente dalle monache dell’ordine di S. Basilio, che affermavano che la Patrona avesse parte delle loro fila.
In realtà, come spiegato nel saggio, la contesa era sostenuta dai Gesuiti, insieme ai Benedettini, in funzione anti francescana, considerando che le prime immagini della Santuzza la ritraevano con il saio marrone legato con una corda, manifestando di conseguenza il valore eremitico nel percorso della sua santità e inevitabilmente richiamando l’abito di S. Francesco.
Il contributo ripercorre, dunque, la rassegna delle prime immagini di S. Rosalia, anche tramite fonti dirette e indirette, avanzando per la prima volta l’ipotesi che in realtà la causa scatenante il conflitto iconografico fosse dovuta ai Domenicani che utilizzarono la celeberrima pala con la Madonna del Rosario in S. Domenico di Antoon van Dyck, fino ad oggi non considerata nell’ambito della questione che vide coinvolti rinomati pittori, frutto di acute committenze, tra cui Carlo Maratti e Paolo De Matteis, un secolo dopo l’immagine vandyckiana.

Nel 2013, in occasione delle celebrazioni del terzo centenario dalla morte di Carlo Maratti, l’Accademia di San Luca ha promosso la mostra "I ritratti dei santi artisti. Una regia di Maratti per l’Accademia di San Luca", curata da Marica Marzinotto, Valeria Rotili e Stefania Ventra. La mostra documentava, attraverso l’esposizione dei dodici ritratti di Santi Artisti donati da Maratti, insieme ad altri due dispersi, al momento del suo insediamento come Principe perpetuo dell’Accademia nell’anno 1700, un episodio significativo dell’impegno di Maratti nell’istituzione romana. 
Questo volume raccoglie i risultati delle ricerche che hanno accompagnato l’ideazione della mostra e le prime riflessioni critiche sulla serie dei Santi Artisti, realizzata dai «giovani» di Maratti sotto la direzione del maestro.

The name of the little-known Italian poet Giorgio Maria Rapparini functions surprisingly like a hypertext for the history of European art and culture between the late 17th and early 18th century. Born in Bologna, Rapparini spent most of his life at the Palatine court in Germany as secretary to Prince Johann Wilhelm II. Taking into account three of his literary works (the dramma per musica Il fabbro pittore, the treatise Le portrait du vrai mérite and the heroi-comic poem L’Arlichino), the article deals with the multiple connections between this figure and the contemporary art scene. Rapparini, indeed, played all the possible roles of a courtier virtuoso. He was not only an enthusiastic supporter of the agreeable and culturally rich climate in Düsseldorf and a sincere and trusted friend of artists like Rosalba Carriera and Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini, but also worked as a scenographer, illustrator and theatrical performer.

Entre las piezas de la colección Maratti adquiridas por Felipe V se cuenta una "Toilette de Venus" (Patrimonio Nacional, inv. 10040132) tradicionalmente considerada obra de la artista boloñesa Elisabetta Sirani, hija del también pintor Giovanni Andrea Sirani. En este artículo se exponen pruebas documentales y paralelos formales que permiten atribuir el lienzo a Sirani padre, cuyas pinturas fueron desde muy temprano atribuidas a la hija que le superó en fama.

Among the paintings from Maratta’s collection bought by Philip V there is a Toilette of Venus traditionally attributed to Elisabetta Sirani, the famous daughter of the Bolognese painter Giovanni Andrea Sirani. In this paper we bring to light documentary evidences and compositional parallelisms between this piece and paintings produced at Reni’s workshop which allows us to ascribe the Toilette of Venus to Elisabetta’s father.

Pittore versatile e abile disegnatore, Luigi Garzi (1638-1721) fu celebrato dalla storiografia settecentesca per la sua lunga e operosa attività artistica all’insegna della grazia, dell’eleganza formale, dell’originalità creativa e della fine elaborazione cromatica.
Si formò giovanissimo a Roma presso «Salomon Boccali pittor di paesi» e completò la propria educazione nella bottega di Andrea Sacchi, dove diede prova di possedere uno spiccato talento artistico che in breve tempo gli permise di conseguire una certa autonomia professionale.
Garzi visse e operò per quasi tutta la sua vita a Roma: nel 1670 divenne accademico di San Luca (di cui fu Principe nel 1682) e successivamente, nel 1680 e nel 1702, Reggente della Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon. La sua produzione pittorica – pienamente debitrice della lezione sacchiana e orientata a un classicismo sia emiliano sia marattesco con evidenti suggestioni poussiniane – è documentata nella capitale pontificia a partire dagli anni Settanta del Seicento con la realizzazione delle prime opere di destinazione pubblica (San Marcello al Corso, Santa Caterina a Magnanapoli, Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Santi Ambrogio e Carlo al Corso) e privata (Palazzo Borghese); imprese che contribuirono a consolidare la sua fama di impaginatore di pale d’altare e di decoratore a fresco, aprendogli la strada a nuovi incarichi non esclusivamente limitati all’ambito romano, tra cui le prestigiose commissioni napoletane della seconda metà degli anni Novanta del Seicento (Santa Caterina a Formiello, Galleria del principe di Cellamare, Palazzo Reale e San Carlo all’Arena).
La figura di Garzi è rimasta a lungo relegata ai margini degli interessi critici con rare eccezioni rappresentate da isolati contributi apparsi negli ultimi decenni.
Il presente volume unisce saggi di autorevoli studiosi che, con metodologie diverse, affrontano la carriera del pittore, offrendo un imprescindibile contributo alla comprensione della sua vicenda artistica e biografica e uno strumento scientifico di riferimento in vista di un catalogo ragionato delle sue opere.

During the last two decades of the 17th century the painter Luigi Garzi produced for his patron cardinal Alderano
Cybo several works; among them we find some of the best examples of Garzi’s art. Along with some
lost canvases for Cybo’s collection and the fresco of the dome in the Cybo Chapel in the Roman basilica
of Santa Maria del Popolo, he painted four altarpieces for churches in Massa, Jesi, Ostia. The attention is
focused on these four main works, which show similarities and differences between them

The "Disputation of the Immaculate Conception" by Carlo Maratta in the Cybo Chapel (Rome, Santa Maria del Popolo) is not the only work on this subject commissioned by Cardinal Alderano Cybo in the 1680s. The cardinal had Luigi Garzi do another Disputation for the church of San Francesco in Massa. The use of this ‘militant’ iconography is symptomatic of his profound devotion to the theme of the 'sine macula' conception of the Virgin and his desire for a rapid definition of the dogma. Unlike Garzi’s Disputation, whose dynamism and dramatic quality make it fully ‘baroque’, Maratta’s altarpiece is closely tied to Raphael’s Disputa, the theological disputation par excellence. Indeed, it can be described as a reenactment of the same.

The painting representing The Trinity and the Virgin appearing to Saint Philip Neri (1680) is one of the most important works of the late baroque painter Giovanni Maria Morandi (1622-1717), born in Florence but mainly active in Rome during the second half of 17th century. Morandi enjoyed a long career during which produced a large number of paintings, many of which are unfortunately lost. During his activity he portrayed five Popes and a great number of cardinals and roman aristocrats. His gift as portraitist led him to Vienna where he worked on the Habsburg family’s commissions. Through the Chigi patronage Morandi worked for Siena too, being engaged for two altarpieces: an Annunciation (1676) for the Spedale Santa Maria della Scala and the above-mentioned Trinity and the Virgin appearing to Saint Philip Neri for Siena Cathedral. The present research adds to this last painting’s knowledge its modello, firstly mentioned in Sforza Cesarini collection, and a compositional drawing related to it. The first one is in the Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge), incorrectly attributed to the Morandi’s contemporary Giuseppe Passeri by museum’s catalogues. These two paintings, varied in dimensions, share same composition and same classicizing definition of figures. The sienese altarpiece also relates to a compositional drawing in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum (Cologne) representing the Apparition of the Trinity to four Saints. There are strong compositional similarities between the altarpiece and the present drawing: the pose of Christ, God and angels are partially the same. The unpublished modello of the sienese Trinity and the Virgin appearing to Saint Philip Neri is, at the present state of our knowledge, an important addition to the oeuvre of the Florentine painter Giovanni Maria Morandi who met with great success only among his contemporaries.

Il settimo fascicolo (IV, 2014, 1) di Horti Hesperidum, curato da Francesco Grisolia e intitolato Disegnare a Roma dall'età del Manierismo al Neoclassicismo, ospita una raccolta di studi sul disegno di ‘scuola romana’, che con i suoi sviluppi e le sue variegate testimonianze si dipana attraverso il Manierismo cinquecentesco (dagli esiti della ricerca di Michelangelo nei suoi disegni per Tommaso de’ Cavalieri, ai pittori Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta e Nicolò Martinelli detto il Trometta), passando per i disegni di vari protagonisti e comprimari del Seicento (il genovese Giovanni Andrea Podestà; i cortoneschi romani Ciro Ferri e Pietro Lucatelli; gli aquilani Francesco Bedeschini, Cesare Fantetti e l’ascolano Ludovico Trasi; un pittore del calibro di Giacinto Brandi) e del Settecento romano (il marattesco Andrea Procaccini e l’architetto spagnolo a Roma Domingo Antonio Lois Monteagudo), fino all’attività grafica di esponenti del XX secolo (il faentino e accademico di San Luca Tommaso Minardi, il bergamasco Francesco Coghetti, il dalmata Francesco Salghetti-Drioli), a sancire il persistente ruolo dell’Urbe nelle arti del disegno.

The fragment of the correspondence between Sebastiano Resta and the Bolognese antiquarian Giuseppe Magnavacca, here analysed, provides new evidence on the famous graphic collection of Giovan Pietro Bellori and allows a better reconstruction of some of its aspects.
The letter here examined shows that at Bellori’s death many drawings passed into Resta’s hands thanks to the advice of Carlo Maratti. In addition, the letter testifies their common interest towards Correggio's activities. From different points of view, they both recognized his key role in the development of art history in modern times.

Tra il 1661 e il 1663 una seconda campagna decorativa, voluta da Rodrigo de Sylva, investì la cappella nel transetto destro della chiesa di Sant’Isidoro agricola a capo le case.
Ad un lustro dalla morte del grande teologo francescano irlandese, Luke Wadding (†1657), Francis Harold, nipote ed erede del titolo di cronografo dell’ordine e Giovan Pietro Bellori, l’antiquario romano autore delle Vite degli artisti del Seicento e sindaco apostolico del collegio irlandese a partire dal 1653, supervisionarono i lavori e stilarono il complesso programma iconografico.
La cappella de Sylva, dedicata all’Immacolata Concezione e l’ultima in ordine di tempo ad essere decorata, si mostra, per le fonti utilizzate e per gli artisti coinvolti di cui renderemo conto nell’intervento, in continuità con lo svolgimento della restante decorazione avvenuta interamente sotto il magistero di Wadding e con la politica del pontificato chigiano.
Questa continuità restituisce, dal punto di vista iconografico, un’unità dell’edificio – qui raccontata per la prima volta - che trova un corrispettivo rilevante nella biografia del frate irlandese e che trova in essa le proprie coordinate culturali.

This paper re-examines the Disputation on the Immaculate Conception by Carlo Maratti (1686) and its reception in hitherto understudied poems which were first published in 1686 and 1687. Although the poems are chiefly celebratory and refer to the tradition of encomiastic pictorial description, this essay demonstrates how they help us understand the beholder’s engagement with Baroque art. It first analyzes the poems as both encomiastic speech and ekphrastic poetry to explain how epideictic description persuasively moves readers to venerate the Virgin, thus rekindling the cult of the Immaculate Conception. Subsequently, a comparative reading of the poems and the painting demonstrates how art and literature mutually informed each other to create new aesthetic and intellectual values. A detailed comparison between visual and verbal languages will therefore offer a new interpretative framework to reassess the painting, the poems, and their public.

Negli studi dedicati a Faustina Maratti (Roma 1679 ca.-1745), l'attenzione si è concentrata sulle vicende della sua travagliata vita e sulle sue poesie di tema intimo ed autobiografico. Il presente saggio intende invece analizzare dieci sonetti della poetessa dedicati a mulieres illustres dell'antica Roma, dei quali solo quello su Lucrezia ed in parte quello su Tuzia sono stati oggetto di studi approfonditi: il primo per via del legame con l'episodio del tentato rapimento di Faustina, il secondo perché composto come ἔκφρασις del quadro del padre Carlo Maratti; agli altri sonetti sono stati dedicati solo veloci e generici cenni. Sebbene siano stati scritti da Faustina in un lungo arco di tempo, questi dieci sonetti furono da lei concepiti come un ciclo unitario, lo studio nasce pertanto dalla necessità di voler restituire a tale gruppo la loro coerenza d'insieme, trattandoli come una serie unitaria. Ciò ha permesso di comprendere come Faustina abbia voluto creare un ciclo letterario ad imitazione di quello dipinto dal padre, instaurando un rapporto di imitatio-aemulatio con il suo stesso padre, mentre l'analisi dei singoli sonetti ha evidenziato l'ampiezza e la profondità degli insegnamenti che attraverso di essi Faustina volle impartire, nonché la sua padronanza del pensiero di Bellori sui rapporti tra arte e letteratura. Questo ciclo poetico, pertanto, si è rivelato assai interessante per approfondire l'indicazione di Romano Cervone sull'importanza che la cultura classicista dell'ambiente paterno ebbe nella formazione antiquaria di Faustina.

In 1888, Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer stayed in Rome and on that occasion he obtained a gift  from Prince Balthazar III Odescalchi for the gallery of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts. From his rich collection, the Prince, at his own expense, sent to Zagreb art pieces of large dimensions (4.47 x 7.94 m), which were immediately recognized as copies of two frescoes from the Raphael’s Rooms in Vatican: Th e Meeting of Leo the Great and Attila and Th e Parnassus. Th e paintings are attributed to the Italian Baroque painter Carlo Maratti. Th e preserved correspondence Rački-Strossmayer, as well as the letters of Balthazar III Odescalchi, testify that the works of art were donated to the Croatian nation, especially the City of Zagreb. Th e paintings were immediately exhibited in the Academy Palace as part of the permanent exhibition, but from 1956 they have been deposited in storage and were not available to the public. Th ese works of art are now part of the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and are currently being restored at the Croatian Conservation Institute in Zagreb. Biskup Josip Juraj Strossmayer boravio je 1888. godine u Rimu i tom prigodom ishodio poklon od Baltazar III. kneza Odescalchi za galeriju Jugoslavenske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti. Knez je o svome trošku  iz svoje bogate zbirke, poslao u Zagreb umjetnine velikih dimenzija (4,47 x 7,94 m), koje su odmah prepoznate kao kopije dviju Rafaelovih fresaka iz vatikanskih Stanzi: Papa Lav I. Veliki i Atila te Parnas. Slike su pripisane talijanskom baroknom slikaru Carlu Maratti. Sačuvana korespondencija Rački-Strossmayer, kao i pisma Baltazara III. Odescalchija, svjedoče da su umjetnine poklonjene hrvatskoj naciji, ponajprije gradu Zagrebu. Slike su od dolaska bile izložene u Akademijinoj palači kao dio stalnoga galerijskog postava, no od 1956. su deponirane u spremištu i nisu bile dostupne javnosti. Ove su umjetnine danas dio fundusa Strossmayerove galerije starih majstora Hrvatske akademije znanosti i umjetnosti, a trenutno se nalaze na restauraciju u Hrvatskom restauratorskom zavodu u Zagrebu.

During his sojourn in Rome Antonio Primo used a notebook in which he drew everything that would capture his attention and interest (1761-1764). The identification of what we find in his notebook is of great relevance, in order to understand how young artists used to train in Rome during the first stage of their careers; this also allows to make the acquaintance of some important figures who let artists enter non-public spaces, where they had the opportunity to study and copy works of art.

Ercole Ferrata (Pellio di Sotto, Como, 1610 - Rome, 1686) was an important sculptor in Seventeenth-century Rome, following two protagonists such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Alessandro Algardi. The eight wooden sculptures from Ferrata’s studio, deposited by his heirs in the parish church of San Michele in Pellio di Sotto and now displayed in the Museum of Scaria Intelvi since 1966, testify to the strong and lasting bond with the native valley. In his will, drawn up in 1685, the sculptor ordered the materials of his studio to be intended for the public benefit and, above all, of his homeland. To these eight small wooden sculptures, we can now add an ivory Crucifix, mentioned in pastoral visits in the Nineteenth century, then forgotten and considered missing, which is proposed here to be recognized in the one mentioned in the inventory of the sculptor’s house, particularly in his bedroom, where Ferrata died in 1686. Therefore, the Crucifix and the eight models are testimonies of an exceptional human and artistic experience; they offer the opportunity not only to reconsider the history of the dispersion of Ferrata’s studio, but also to better understand its organization, then to measure Ferrata’s long legacy in Lombard sculpture between Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries.

Nel mare magnum della produzione grafica e dei dipinti degli allievi di Maratti si prendono in esame alcuni esempi particolarmente emblematici per qualità e che manifestano la poca attenzione degli studi per tutto un settore della produzione a Roma sul crinale del '600.

My Ph.D. thesis (2014) examines the artist’s concern with identity, mortality and a posthumous reputation in Rome between the late sixteenth and early eighteenth centuries. These issues have been placed within the religious and socio-cultural context of the period.

Delyen est né et formé à Gand, où il devient Maître en 1705. Il entre dans l'atelier de Nicolas de Largillierre autour de 1710, séjourne à l'Académie de France à Rome de 1719 à 1723. Il est agréé par l’Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture le 26 août 1724 et reçu le 24 novembre 1725. Il décède en 1761.
Cette thèse reconstitue sa vie, le catalogue de son œuvre et le milieu des 130 peintres belges actifs à Paris au XVIIIe siècle. Ces recherches démontrent que l’on peut espérer mieux connaître les 732 peintres belges du XVIIIe siècle, tant sous-estimés, par un retour aux sources ainsi qu’une analyse approfondie de la bibliographie et des œuvres. Cinq domaines connexes ont également profité d’apports nouveaux : Carlo Maratti, les Status animarum romains, proposition d'un protocole d'étude d'une peinture de chevalet, Saint-Julien-des-Flamands à Rome et les biographies d'artistes.

This fascinating book provides a fresh perspective on the understanding of sacred imagery and its use through selected studies related to seventeenth-century Roman visual culture. Patronage and Devotion: A Focus on Six Roman Baroque Paintings will accompany an exhibition of works by prominent Baroque artists, at the Villa Mondragone, a Renaissance Papal Villa in the countryside of Rome.



The highlight of catalogue and exhibition is a group of masterpieces by seven prominent artists of the seventeenth century: five altarpieces by Carlo Saraceni, Valentin de Boulogne, Andrea Sacchi, Andrea Camassei and Carlo Maratti, and one easel painting by Guido Reni commissioned for private devotion. Most of the paintings will be on public view for the first time.



The publication offers new approaches to the study of the complex processes involved in the making of a work of art. By reconstructing the religious and social dynamics of artistic patronage and the context of worship and devotion in which these paintings – fully documented by primary sources – were executed, the volume explores the visual impact of these works on the viewers.


This beautifully illustrated book will feature new research, remarkable photographs and details of diagnostic analyses of the altarpieces.
