This book is an anthropology book, not a social and cultural anthropology book, but an existential anthropology book. It presents a critique of the theories and methods of the social sciences, which Albert Piette reproaches for side-stepping human beings, their modes of being and more generally the fact of existing. The book also offers an original combination of methods for exploring the details of existence: the particularities of each person in a group, the succession of situations in a day, and the subtlety of moments of presence. It gives rise to new theoretical propositions on what constitutes the specificity of human existence and social life.

This book is a theoretical essay that lays foundations on which to build an anthropology directly focusing on human units. In the first chapter, the author attempts to show that the evolutionary specificity of humans constitutes an argument in favour of this perspective. the consciousness of existing in time and nuanced modalities of presence call for a detailed observation of humans. the second chapter is a critique of the abundant use of the notion of relations in social anthropology. this critique is necessary because of the extent to which the various theoretical and methodological uses of relations absorb and lose existences and their details. the third chapter concerns non-humans, another major theme of contemporary anthropology. Albert Piette sees a certain debasement of the notion of existence and proposes a realist ontology, considering what does and does not exist, from the examples of divinities, animals and collective institutions. It is not a matter of being satisfied with an analysis of ontologies or local meta-physics, but also showing what really is in a situation, and not just from the point of view of people and their discourse. this analysis leads to a classification of beings and to a consideration of the importance of minimality in human existence.

These proceedings are the result of the 4th research topic with which MIMESIS, a transveral program of the research unit UMR 7044  dealt (2009-2012). Our aim was to bring together historians, art historians, archaeologists, philologists and philosophers. While mostly based on visual cultures from Antiquity, our approach of the idea of detail was also enhanced by papers from external speakers on the Renaissance and contemporary eras.

The volume includes contributions addressing the concept of detail in ancient literature and arts, the issue of chrono-cultural idiomatization, and the status of the detail as an epistemological paradigm. No less than 21 articles try to bring a fresh look on this "little thing" with "such an uncertain outline".

Que capte l’oeil du sociologue ou de l’anthropologue quand il observe ? En réalité, le regard fait le partage entre ce qui est pertinent et ce qui ne l’est pas ou l’est moins, entre le nécessaire et l’accessoire. Toute observation comporte ainsi un reste, qui mérite cependant que l’on s’y arrête.

Dans ce livre publié pour la première fois en 1996 et devenu un classique, Albert Piette interroge les différentes traditions sociologiques ou ethnologiques afin de dégager le principe de pertinence que chacune d’elles met en oeuvre pour séparer l’essentiel du détail. Développant une approche originale, il défend l’idée selon laquelle la réalité sociale se construit dans la tension, variable selon chaque situation et chaque acteur, entre le primordial et le superflu. Ce sont ces écarts, ces restes, qui contribuent à définir les individus dans ce qu’ils ont de proprement humain.

This paper invites not to reflect on festivals as a celebration or a transgression but to observe them as "a play with" meaning and communication. The author considers the folklore as a genuine laboratory of observation of everyday life. He illustrates his analysis with the examples of the Binche Carnival (Belgium) and of Labour Day (1st of May) and gives an interpretation with Bateson's concept of "play" as the American anthropologist has used to describe the play of animals at fighting. This leads the author to strongly insist on the small details of behaviours always imprinted with a "not" characteristic of ritual contexts

Digital speech signal is one of the most important types of data used due to the large number of computerized applications that are needed for mankind. Some computerized applications that use digital signals need a high level of security to protect the signal, and to turn it into a vague and incomprehensible signal to any third party, and that is why we have to seek a secure method of cryptography to protect the speech signal. In this research paper we will introduce a method based wavelet packet tree decomposition and reconstruction to generate an encrypted speech, the method will reorder the original speech using a secret number of decomposition levels, the obtained wavelet decomposition sizes will be used to form a speech segments, which must be rearranged in a secret order to get the encrypted speech, the introduced method will be implemented and evaluated to prove the security issues.

This chapter starts with observations of monkeys and apes conducted by renowned primatologists. Their emphasis on nonhuman primates' interactional density raises the question of how human beings, by contrast, are present in everyday life situations. I will be emphasizing how the interactions of nonhuman primates differs from the presence-absence that can be constantly observed among humans. In what follows, this point, which may highlight a major difference of humans from nonhuman primates, will trigger a reflection on anthropology. Armed with this element of human specificity, I will then connect anthropology as a science of human beings to a set of principles that make it a specific discipline, different from the social sciences. From this perspective, I will conclude by describing the place that animals occupy in such an anthropological science.
