How do these 3 movies ("The Matrix", "Cube","eXistenZ") philosophically distinguish what is real and what's not?

Michel Foucault's early writing on dreams and imagination is one of the often neglected aspects of his work. In this paper, I give an overview of his "Dreams, Imagination and Existence" essay, accompanied by a discussion of his writings on art and its role as a technique of existence.

Este livre-escrito se pretende uma aproximação estética ao texto "Água Viva", de Clarice Lispector. Em tal aproximação busca-se uma experiência imediata, explicitante do princípio, já presente nas teorizações das psicoterapias de fundamentação fenomenológico-existencial, segundo o qual não encontram-se no cultivo das capacidades humanas de reflexão as possibilidades de atualização das potencialidades humanas de auto-construção e auto-superação.

Kann man Bewusstsein, Realität, Gewahrsein und freien Willen auf ein einziges Grundmuster zurückführen? Ohne etwas von ihnen aufzugeben? Kann das Universum sowohl real als auch individuell existieren, ohne sich aus beidem zusammenzusetzen? Dieser Dialog begründet Bewusstsein und Entscheidungsfreiheit auf der Basis eines neuen Realitätskonzepts, das auch das Unendliche einbezieht, soweit wir es verstehen. Bereits die einfachste Unterscheidung beinhaltet Bewusstsein. Sie ist nicht statisch, sondern ein ständiger Perspektivenwechsel. Aus ihrer Ganzheit und Bewegung aber entsteht Wahlfreiheit, die mehr ist als umgedeutete Notwendigkeit und Unvorhersagbarkeit. Obwohl Entscheidungen letztlich das ganze Universum einbeziehen, sind sie in unterschiedlichem Maß auch hier und jetzt frei. Die Einheit und Offenheit des Unendlichen ermöglicht dem Individuum eine Kreativität, die mittelbar und unmittelbar in alle anderen Individuen eingeht, ohne sie zu behindern. Ein gegenteiliger Eindruck entsteht nur in einem verengten Gewahrsein. Aber sogar das bewussteste und freieste Gewahrsein kann weder alle Entscheidungen vorwegnehmen noch eine Individualität auslöschen. Deren Kreativität ist gesichert.

Kierkegaard's existential analysis frames the problem of suffering as a dialectical moment of human experience: it spans from the various forms of despair to the essential struggle of grasping truth, morality and meaning. Kierkegaard directs our gaze away from a purely external or objectified view on suffering to the world of inner suffering that is built into the paradoxical structure of existence itself. Grasping one’s suffering is therefore an example of the inner process of appropriation, in which the human being “suffers through” one's very being, e.g. one's experiences, emotions, knowing and believing and thereby transmutes them and makes them one's own. This study attempts a new reading of Kierkegaard’s concept of suffering as a relational process, which incorporates psychological, philosophical and spiritual aspects, and is essential to all human understanding: of oneself, of the world, and of God.

The article deals with Conrad-Martius’ conception of being and existence and explores it by contrasting it with the conceptions of Aristotle, Aquinas and Husserl within the framework of their respective ontologies and metaphysics. The article delves into the problems of both the hypostatization and the origin of being in particular. I claim that the hypostatization of being does not concern the Sachverhalt, as Jean Wahl claims, but the noema itself insofar as inten-tionality transcends what is constituted by consciousness and grasps the essence of the sub-stance itself, whose existence is not absolutely but hypothetically posited. I will further show that even though Conrad-Martius rejects the transcendental reduction, she accepts the eidetic reduction and the positing of a sphere of original and given facts, which are not only absolutely given to consciousness, but also self-grounded and self-sustained. Conrad-Martius’ research traces the origin of these back to a transphysical realm, thus revealing the grounds for the Husserlian sphere of primal facts, which itself remains beyond the reach of phenomenological re-flection. Hence Conrad-Martius’ and Husserl’s investigations encounter and complement each other at the point where the real bursts into reality and becomes available to consciousness. These reflections are organized as follows: The first part presents Conrad-Martius’ conception of a real-ontological phenomenology in order to examine her criticism of Husserl’s transcen-dental reduction. The second part deals with her real-ontological conception of the essence of reality or the “real-reality” and its hypothetically posed existence. The third part concerns the conceptions of being, analogia essendi and categorial being with recourse to Aristotle, Aquinas and Husserl and sets these in relation to Conrad-Martius’ own conception. The fourth part deals with her own understanding of the analogia essendi and of real being in order to shed light on the claim concerning the hypostatization of being. The fifth part explores Husserl’s positing of a sphere of primal facticity, Conrad-Martius’ conception of a real entity and its origin in a transphysical realm. The article finally summarizes the main results of these reflections.

Das Hauptargument dieses Buches ist die unleugbare Offenheit jedes Systems zum Unbekannten hin. Und die Grundfrage lautet: Was ergibt sich aus dieser Offenheit? Wir sind ein Teil des unendlichen Universums und eine Verkör­perung seiner Ganzheit. Beides bedeutet für uns eine individuali­sierte Wirklichkeit, durch die sich das Universum ausdrückt und durch die es andererseits mit gebildet wird. Es bedeutet ebenfalls unsere Notwendigkeit, Wichtigkeit und Unzerstörbarkeit für die Gesamtheit seiner Verkörperungen. Die meisten Verbindungen un­tereinander sind uns kaum bewusst. Indessen gewährleistet die In­finitesimalstruktur allen Bewusstseins nicht nur die logische Wi­derspruchsfreiheit dieser Verbindungen, sondern auch die unauf­hebbare Wahlfreiheit jedes einzelnen Individuums. Unser Ziel kann jedoch keineswegs darin liegen, vollkommen bewusst zu entscheiden. Verantwortung schließt Spontanität bezie­hungsweise das Vertrauen auf ein sinnvolles Zusammenwirken der Kräfte ein. Wir werden unserer Rolle im Gesamtzusammenhang zunehmend gewahr und lernen, einen optimalen Beitrag zur Wert­erfüllung aller Individuen, einschließlich uns selbst, zu leisten. Jen­seits der vermeintlichen Unterschiede zwischen objektiver und subjektiver Wirklichkeit begreifen wir, dass wir unsere Realität aus unserem tiefsten Innern heraus erschaffen.

Das Buch, das Ihnen hier in stark gekürzter Fassung vorliegt, entstand aus dem Bedürfnis heraus, unser Wirklichkeitsgefüge unvoreingenommen von etablierten Lehren zu untersuchen, seien diese nun akademisch-wissenschaftlich, populär-esoterisch oder religiös. Wir werden mit scheinbar einfachen Wechselwirkungen in unserem täglichen Leben beginnen, ihr Zustandekommen auf tieferem Niveau untersuchen, Bewusstsein in seinen Grundzügen verstehen und schließlich erkennen, dass wir unsere Realität vollständig selbst erschaffen. Währenddessen öffnen sich wenig beachtete Zugänge zu unserem Unterbewusstsein, anderen Individuen und dem, was man unter "Gott" verstehen kann. Den alles verbindenden Kern bildet die Lösung des klassischen Problems der Willensfreiheit.

Durante los años noventa el género de ciencia ficción experimenta un notable incremento de películas que versan sobre la realidad virtual. La ambientación de estos filmes, que siguen el influyente modelo de distopía nocturna instituido por Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982), presenta hasta el final de la década grandes semejanzas entre sí. Sin embargo David Cronenberg romperá en eXistenZ (1999) con las premisas visuales anteriores. Este artículo analiza sus escenarios señalando la principal novedad introducida por eXistenZ: la recreación de la estética de los videojuegos como elemento esencial del film.

Inheriting the nineteenth century division between the natural- and human-historical sciences, Karl Jaspers emphasizes the psychological understanding of mental disorders as narrative-based, holistic and contextual. However, he also affirms the value of explanatory physiological and neurobiological approaches. Nassir Ghaemi nonetheless interprets Jaspers person-centered, methodologically based pluralism as contradicting George Engel's biopsychosocial project. In our view, Jaspers advances this project. Emphatically, Engel proposed a project and not a product. We have tried to develop a narrative somewhat different than Ghaemi's, with a synergistic consequence, a biopsychosocial model for medicine and psychiatry indebted to both Jaspers and Engel. It is our conclusion that Jaspers' person-centered, methodological pluralism does not contradict biopsychosocial medicine and psychiatry but in fact complements and advances the broader medical model that Engel sought but never ...

The Creating-Our-Reality motif is one of the most central in contemporary Western popular spiritual discourse. The article presents and demonstrates three different versions of it – magical, secularized and metaphysical. Nevertheless, despite the clear differentiation between the spiritualization (or re-enchantment) and secularization (or dis-enchantment) trends, there is an obvious tendency not to leave the motif in its " pure " state, but rather to blend the versions together. Apparently, spiritual practitioners in the West do not wish to abandon Modern-scientific discourse, and yet continue to cling to magic. The melding of secular and spiritual/magical discourses is used as a catalyst for their likening, and for the readiness of those who perceive themselves as secular to buy into the legitimacy of magic. Thus, the attractiveness of spiritual discourse keeps growing, as its legitimization is established within the mainstream.
The article presents the characteristics of the Creating-Our-Reality motif in contemporary spiritual popular culture, while also discussing the theological-ethical-cultural implications embedded in its various designs (including the deification of the individual; the built-in paradoxes of individual and society, passiveness and proactivity; and optimism ethics).

Der Wunsch, sich zu verständigen, Klarheit zu schaffen, Phänomena treffend zu charakterisieren, Gesetzmäßigkeiten dingfest zu machen, Ereignisse und Entwicklungen vorauszusagen etc., kurz: das Bedürfnis, zu verstehen wie, was oder warum etwas ist, ist leitend in vielen Lebensbereichen. In Philosophie nehmen sie derart unterschiedliche Formen an, dass Kommunikation teils ausbleiben muss. Richtig verstanden, ergibt vieles Sinn, was widersprüchlich erschien - und so führe ich in meiner Arbeit drei der wichtigsten Autorinnen und Autoren der Philosophie anhand einer Fragestellung zusammen: was ist eine existenzielle Krise? Im Gespräch der Logizistiker Wittgenstein, der Sprachphilosoph Ryle und Hannah Arendt, die sich wohl einer der existenziellsten Fragen der Philosophie stellte: wann ist Ethik?

Este artigo examina como Marshall McLuhan, ainda na década de 1960, não se restringe à estrutura midiática, mas aborda os meios de comunicação em relação à sociedade em que se inscrevem – indiciando a existência de processos midiáticos –, e aponta a massagem exercida por estes meios como responsável pela alteração nos processos de percepção e cognição – antecipando o que hoje entendemos por sociedade em vias de midiatização.  Para tanto, revisitamos três momentos da comunicação: 1. A invenção do telégrafo e sua relação com a imprensa já estabelecida; 2. A televisão e a mudança de percepção nos
telespectadores; e 3. O Twitter em suas ferramentas como complexificação da massagem. Revisitamos os dois primeiros momentos, que são largamente refletidos pelo próprio McLuhan, em e, por fim, trabalhamos o Twitter relacionando apontamentos de McLuhan a conceitos contemporâneos que envolvem a midiatização.

He subtitulado este artículo como existencialismo “desde” Karl Jaspers y no “con” Karl Jaspers pues este psiquiatra y filósofo que nació en 1883 y falleció en 1969 lógicamente no está ahora con nosotros para poderle preguntar sobre su extensa filosofía y que nos aclarase algunos de sus profundas ideas existenciales. No obstante en sus más de 1000 páginas en dos tomos (en la edición española, en otras ediciones extranjeras se hizo en tres tomos) ya se explica él profusamente . Desde luego vivenció momentos existenciales muy profundos pues siendo alemán y casado con una mujer judía fue desposeído durante la época nazi de su cátedra de filosofía y con grandes esfuerzos consiguió que no se le deportase a un campo de concentración, lo cual casi seguro hubiera ocurrido si la Segunda Guerra Mundial hubiese durando algo más; en esto Albert Einstein no ayudó nada pues estando, este último, en Estados Unidos y habiendo hecho una petición Jaspers para ir a la misma universidad americana en la que Einstein estaba, dio un informe desfavorable diciendo algo así como que no se entendía lo que Jaspers escribía.
También he subtitulado este artículo “a propósito de 7 descarríos”. Jaspers dice que todo el que filosofa se descarría constantemente, y de sus ideas saldrían, seguro, no 7 sino cientos de derivadas e ideas y “descarríos”, pero quiero poner un límite acorde a lo que pretendemos en este artículo y creo que 7 es un número adecuado.

Wie ist es möglich, daß der 1951 verstorbene österreichische Philosoph Ludwig Wittgenstein in so kurzer Zeit zu solcher Weltberühmtheit gelangen konnte, daß er in einem Atemzug mit den ganz großen Philosophen genannt wird ? Wollen wir dieses Geheimnis ergründen, so müssen wir den Zeitgeist zu verstehen versuchen, der Ludwig Wittgensteins Denken diese Geltung verschafft hat. Es sind Defizite der Moderne, auf die Wittgenstein den Finger gelegt hat.

David Cronenberg, este artigo desenvolve uma reflexão sobre a relação entre o ser humano e os novos meios tecnológicos no mundo contemporâneo, nomeadamente a realidade virtual.

Esse artigo explora elementos oferecidos pelo filme eXistenZ de David Cronenberg para tensionar noções que comumente fundam nossa experiência da realidade. O enevoamento de fronteiras (entre o real e o virtual, o orgânico e o tecnológico) realizado pelo filme pode nos oferecer inquietantes questionamentos, seja em relação às ficções que nos rodeiam, seja em relação às realidades múltiplas da nossa própria vida cotidiana.

In The Origin and Goal of History Karl Jaspers describes the rise of civilizations by using the phrase "Axial Age" to refer to a phenomenon that is not reducible to direct causal relations between different cultures. This essay addresses the question of how the new level of self-consciousness of mankind that has been achieved during the Axial Age can best be explained. Three possible explanations are being discussed, which comprise firstly, seeing the parallel cultural developments of the axial age as a pure temporal coincidence; secondly, identifying the simultaneity of the axial civilizations as a sign of destiny or as the work of God; and thirdly, identifying concrete cultural and anthropological patterns that have shaped the axial cultures. While the third explanation does not exactly correspond with Jaspers' original philosophical intentions, it is arguably the most defensible one.

URL: Resumen Aunque Roberto Prudencio cuenta como uno de los principales propulsores de la filosofía académica en Bolivia, su obra ha quedado ciertamente descuidada, sino olvidada por los investigadores actuales. Ante tal situación, el presente artículo ofrece un abordaje a su obra, considerando tres términos: existencia, nación y mestizaje. Después de la introducción, la segunda parte del texto ensaya una reconstrucción de la biografía del autor, atendiendo a algunos aspectos del ambiente académico en el que trabajó, en especial, en su etapa chilena y su relación con la fenomenología y el existencialismo. La tercera parte se concentra en los términos de existencia, mestizaje y nación, proponiendo la idea de que la construcción de la nación boliviana, según Prudencio, debía lograrse mediante una transformación de la existencia ambigua humana, mediante la relación dinámica con el entorno telúrico y con la herencia indígena. Así, este estudio preliminar busca ofrecer un primer intento de organización de la obra de este interesante filósofo boliviano. Palabras clave: existencia, existencialismo, nación, mestizaje.

Psychiatry as a discipline oscillates between the language of emotions and that of biology; ranging from the immersion into the subjective experience of another person to the objective approach of biomedical science. The tension between these different approaches may seem irreconcilable and confusing to some. This was not the case for Karl Jaspers who pioneered a systematic reflection on the concepts underlying psychiatric theory and practice. In this essay, we engage with Jaspers' thinking and create a dialogue with contemporary psychiatric research and philosophy of mind. Jaspers' conception of erklären and verstehen and his position on research in the neuroscience of mental disorders is brought together with the thought of Thomas Nagel and John Searle. We argue for the compatibility of Jaspers' ideas with Nagel's and Searle's views on the mind/body problem. Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset and German philosopher Karl Jaspers were both born in 1883, and they both maintained the position that humans are principally historical beings. Therefore, as attested by this notion itself, there are points in which their philosophy coincides. Ortega argued that human beings have no nature, only history. His argument is that history as such is human nature; what is most natural about being human is the fact of being historical and thus always having historicity. Jaspers maintained the same position that in contemplating historicity, one's focus should not be on human nature in the strictly hereditary sense, because it is one's traditions, not the genetic makeup, that most make one to be human. Jaspers emphasizes the conversion of an existential historic consciousness into a consciousness of historicity that is similar to what can be understood in Ortega as historical perspectivism imbued with pragmatism.
